UM, AS WE CAME BACK UP WITH, UM, POLAR AS OUR, UM, ONLINE SYSTEM, POLARIS CAME BACK UP LAST FRIDAY, WE PUT OUT A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS AND THE LAST EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM KIMBERLY WAS THAT WE HAVE HAD 480 PEOPLE SUBMIT VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS, WHICH IS A LITTLE OVERWHELMING FOR US ON TOP OF EVERYTHING.

SO, UM, KIMBERLY'S FAST WORKING ON IT, BUT SHE'S GOING TO GIVE YOU AN OVERVIEW.

UM, AND PICTURED HERE IS ONE OF OUR REGULAR VOLUNTEERS WHO ACTUALLY USED TO WORK FOR THE LIBRARY, UM, ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO AT HAMPTON, ILLINOIS.

HER NAME IS CARLA AND HERE SHE IS AT THE HAMPTON, ILLINOIS BRANCH AT THE SMART SUMMER KICKOFF PARTY THAT WERE HELD EARLIER THIS JUNE.

SO WHAT SOMETHING I WANTED DISCOVER FIRST IS WHY VOLUNTEERING? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO THE LIBRARY AND WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT IT? SO THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IS GROWING AS .

KIRSTEN JUST MENTIONED EVEN BEFORE WE SENT OUT THAT EMAIL AND GOT SO MANY VOLUNTEERS.

UM, COMPARED TO LAST YEAR, FROM JANUARY THROUGH APRIL, WE'VE GROWN IN HOURS RECORDED AND APPLICATIONS RECEIVED ABOUT 30% EACH.

SO IT'S NOT JUST WE'RE GETTING MORE APPLICATIONS, THOSE PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY FOLLOWING THROUGH AND COMING TO OUR LIBRARIES.

UM, ADDITIONALLY THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF, UH, THE VALUE OF THE VOLUNTEERING COMING FOR ONE HOUR IS $30.

ABOUT $30.

UM, AND THAT IS FROM THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR AND DUGOOD INSTITUTE.

SO WHILE OF COURSE WE KNOW INHERENTLY WHY WE WANT VOLUNTEERS, UM, THAT'S A HUGE BENEFIT TO THE ORGANIZATION IN TERMS OF PREVENTING STAFF BURNOUT AND HELPING KINDA KEEP EVERYBODY ENERGIZED AND PREVENTING FATIGUE.

SO VOLUNTEERS ARE IMPORTANT IN THE HELP THAT THEY DO FOR US AND IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT FOR THEM AS A FORM OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.

SO AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESS FOR THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

SO WE CAN ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS 14 AND OLDER AND THEN VOLUNTEERS 18 AND OLDER REQUIRE A BACKGROUND CHECK EVERY THREE YEARS THAT'S BEEN WAIVED PARTIALLY, UH, JUST TO HELP GET US CAUGHT UP.

BUT THAT'S THE GENERAL PROCEDURE.

WE GET VOLUNTEERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE.

A LOT OF TIMES WE HAVE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO NEED HOURS, RETIREES WHO'RE LOOKING FOR AN ENGAGING WAY TO JOIN THEIR COMMUNITY AND GET OUT OF THE HOUSE.

WE DO SUPPORT COURT ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE AND THEN OF COURSE PASSIONATE LIBRARY PATRONS WHO JUST WANNA SPEND MORE TIME WITH US.

THE PROCESS INCLUDED AN APPLICATION, AN INTERVIEW WITH STAFF, AND A BACKGROUND CHECK ON AVERAGE, SOME OF OUR LARGEST PROGRAMS FOR VOLUNTEERING THAT ARE HELD YEARLY.

UM, THERE'S A BACKPACK CHALLENGE.

VOLUNTEERS HELP PROCESS DONATIONS, PACK UP BACKPACKS, AND THEN DISTRIBUTE THE BACKPACKS FOR, UM, PEOPLE IN NEED.

IT CONTAINS GENERAL HYGIENE AND AS WE GO INTO THE INTER WINTER MONTHS, IT CAN CONTAIN BLANKETS AND OTHER THINGS THAT ARE ALL RECEIVED BY DONATIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

THERE'S A LARGE PROGRAM TOWARD, UH, IN MARCH, APRIL, THE FAIRYTALE CLOSET.

SO THIS PROGRAM OF COURSE, HELPS STUDENTS PICK OUT THE PERFECT PROM OUTFIT WHO OTHERWISE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD THINGS.

UH, SO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS ON THE BACK END TO HELP ORGANIZE ALL OF THE DRESSES AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS ON THE RIGHT SIZE TRACK AND THEN AT THE EVENT THEMSELVES TO BE THE FAIRY GODMOTHER FOR THE TEENS TO HELP THEM FIND THE MOST PERFECT OUTFIT FOR THEM.

OF COURSE, THIS SUMMER'S VERY BUSY AS PROGRAMS INCREASE BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE OUT.

SO SMART SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE ALWAYS A BIG DRAW FOR VOLUNTEERS.

AND WE HAVE OUR TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL, THEY MEET EVERY OTHER WEEK HERE AT CENTRAL.

UM, AND IT'S, THEIR FOCUS IS TO CREATE CONTENT FOR TEENS BY TEENS IN ADDITION TO HELPING WITH THE REGULAR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SHELVING AND HELP ASSISTING WITH PROGRAMS AS NEEDED.

SO WE GET VOLUNTEERS, ALTHOUGH THEY JUST COME TO US NATURALLY , UM, WE DO RECRUIT THEM.

UM, AND SOME OF THE WAYS THAT WE DO THAT ARE THROUGH POSTINGS ON VOLUNTEER WEBSITES LIKE VOLUNTEER MATCH.

WE CAN TARGET SPECIFIC GROUPS BASED ON INTEREST AND STUDENT GROUPS.

AND THEN SOMETIMES ON OCCASION A CORPORATE SERVICE GROUP WILL REACH OUT FOR A GROUP OPPORTUNITY.

WE DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE THEM.

UM, I THINK ONE CORPORATE GROUP ASKS US FOR 50 VOLUNTEERS AT A TIME, WHICH IS QUITE LARGE.

UM, SO WE DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE CORPORATE GROUP.

THEY HELP GENERALLY WITH, UM, LARGER PROGRAMS AND THEN ONGOING PROGRAMS LIKE THE BACKPACK CHALLENGE, THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A FUN RECRUITMENT BLAST THAT WOULD GO OUT TO VOLUNTEERS THAT HOPEFULLY WOULD ENCOURAGE THEM TO SIGN UP.

WE HAVE SOME NEW PROGRAMS THAT WE JUST LAUNCHED.

ONE OF THESE IS THE AMBASSADOR INITIATIVE, WHICH TAKES PLACE HERE AT CENTRAL.

SO THIS WOULD BE ONE VOLUNTEER AT A TIME WHO SITS DOWN ON THE FIRST FLOOR.

AND THEIR DUTIES INCLUDE GREETING PATRONS, ANSWERING GENERAL LIBRARY QUESTIONS.

THEY DO HELP PATRONS FIND THEIR WAY TO A SPECIFIC PROGRAM OR A MEETING ROOM.

THEY CAN GIVE TOURS WHEN NEEDED.

UH, AND THEY INFORM PATRONS AND UPCOMING PROGRAMS AND THEN AVAILABLE SERVICES.

SO A LOT OF PEOPLE COME IN AND SAY, WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW THE LIBRARY OFFERED THAT.

SO HOPEFULLY THIS, UH, AMBASSADOR VOLUNTEER CAN HELP SPREAD THAT WORD, UM, AND GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH ALL OF THE SERVICES THAT WE OFFER RIGHT NOW.

UH, THIS PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN APRIL AND WE HAVE SOMEONE HERE ON WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY FOR AT LEAST A FEW HOURS, WHICH IS HELPING GREATLY IN THE SUMMER AND WE HAVE LOTS OF PROGRAMS HAPPENING ALL OVER.

IN ADDITION, THEY ALSO HELP DISTRIBUTE WATER WHEN AS RIGHT NOW AS THE TEMPERATURE IS VERY HIGH, WE UM, ARE A COOLING CENTER.

ANOTHER PROGRAM THAT WE'D LIKE TO TELL YOU ABOUT IS OUR HOMELESS ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE.

UM, SO THERE'S TWO ASPECTS TO THIS.

THERE'S A HELP DESK ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE LIBRARY AND WE HAVE ONE VOLUNTEER WHO HAS WAS REALLY EXCITED TO JOIN AND THEY WILL HELP, UM, PATRONS COME IN WHO NEED HELP NAVIGATING RESOURCES CENTERED AROUND HOMELESSNESS IN DALLAS, BUT CAN ALSO BE HELP FIGURING OUT THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY AND JUST WHERE

TO GO NEXT IS KIND OF WHAT THAT IS.

UM, THERE WE ARE ALSO STARTING AN UNHOUSED VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.

SO THE STAFF MEMBERS FOR THE HOMELESS ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE GOT FEEDBACK FROM SOME OF OUR UNHOUSED PATRONS AT BRIG WHO ATTEND PROGRAMS REGULARLY AND THEY SAID THEY WANNA HELP VOLUNTEER.

SO WE'VE CREATED A PROGRAM THAT HELPS THEM DEVELOP SKILLS AND THROUGH CONSISTENT VOLUNTEERING WE CAN PROVIDE, UM, A LETTER OF SKILLS GAINED AND SORT OF, UH, IF THEY VOLUNTEER FOR SIX MONTHS, THEN WE CAN PROVIDE A LEVER LETTER THAT WILL SAY, HEY, THEY COME EVERY DAY FOR SIX MONTHS.

AND WE CAN KIND OF VOUCH FOR THEM IN THAT WAY SO THAT IF THEY ARE LOOKING TO REENTER THE JOB FORCE, UM, THERE IS SOMEONE IN THEIR CORNER HELPING SUPPORT THEM BUT ALSO WHO HAS EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH THEM SO THAT IF THEY DON'T HAVE RECENT JOB HISTORY, WE CAN HELP THEM FIGURE THAT OUT.

AS WELL AS SAYING, WE'VE SEEN THIS PERSON EVERY DAY FOR SIX MONTHS, HERE ARE THE SKILLS THAT THEY'VE DEVELOPED.

IN ADDITION FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT LOOKING TO REENTER THE WORKFORCE, OF COURSE THIS IS ENRICHMENT AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT.

A LOT OF PATRONS ARE HERE AT THE LIBRARY ALMOST EVERY DAY AND THEY WANNA HELP.

UM, SO THAT'S GREAT.

SOME OF THE TASKS INCLUDE, UH, HELPING ON THE, THE HOMELESS INITIATIVE PODCAST ON THE BLOCK.

THEY WANT TO TELL THEIR STORIES AND ALSO GIVE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO DON'T NORMALLY HAVE IT IN DALLAS.

THEY CAN HELP GENERAL LIBRARY TASK LIKE SHELVING AND ALSO WITHIN ANY OTHER HOMELESS INITIATIVE PROGRAMS THAT THEY HAVE, SUCH AS COUGHING CONVERSATIONS, WHAT'S HAPPENED EVERY THURSDAY.

SO WE'RE GROWING ALL THE TIME.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT GROWING AND HOW WE'RE DOING THAT IS VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION.

WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO SHOW APPRECIATION TO OUR VOLUNTEERS AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE CAN FOCUS ON MORE IN THE FUTURE.

WHETHER THAT'S, UH, THEY GET A LITTLE PIN IF THEY'VE BEEN HERE FOR 10 YEARS OR UH, THEY HAVE DONUTS EVERY FRIDAY AT CERTAIN BRANCHES THAT HAVE A HEAVY VOLUNTEER ATTENDANCE, THOSE SORTS OF THINGS.

UM, WE ALSO HAVE MORE PROGRAMS COMING UP AS WE HAD PROGRAMS TO THE DOCKET.

WE HAVE TO ADD VOLUNTEERS AS WELL.

UM, CORPORATE GROUPS ARE, ARE ONE WAY THAT WE'RE APPROACHING NEW VOLUNTEERS.

AS I SAID EARLIER, WE'RE FINDING NEW WAYS TO USE THEM, UM, AND HOPEFULLY HAVE THEM ALL HERE AT ONCE.

ALTHOUGH 50 IS PROBABLY TOO MANY TO HAVE AT ONCE.

AND THEN STAFF SUPPORT.
