23 MEETING SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
[Senior Affairs Commission on September 18, 2023.]
WORK.AND WE, UH, NEED TO DO A QUICK CHECK TO SEE IF WE HAVE ANY, UH, FORUM.
UH, DISTRICT THREE AND FOUR ARE BOTH VACANT.
AND UH, MARY IS HERE, RIGHT? YES.
UM, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? THIS IS CARMEN.
SHOULD I NOT BE HERE? COULD YOU NOT BE THERE? SHOULD I NOT BE HERE? OH, I'M LOOKING AT, I'M LOOKING AT AN OLD FORM THAT SAID THAT THAT WAS A VACANT.
UM, IS LISA ON TODAY? LISA'S ON HERE.
SO, UH, WE HAVE A COURT I LEFT PROCEEDING.
UH, FIRST UP ON THE AGENDA IS, UH, PUBLIC SPEAKERS, AND WE HAVE TONY BRYANT HERE.
YOU'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND SAY HELLO.
YOU NEED TO BE ON CAMERA, THOUGH.
I DIDN'T HEAR MY NAME CALLED I, I SAW YOU AND BROUGHT YOU DOWN.
KYLE'S GOT THE FULL LISTENING IN.
WE WELCOME, UH, PODIUM THAT AGAIN.
THE PODIUM OR OVER HERE? E OH, CHAIR ON E OH, CHAIR ON THE END.
I AM, UH, THE DISTRICT DIRECTOR FOR HOUSE DISTRICT 100, UH, WHICH, UH, REPRESENTS, UH, FENTON JONES.
UM, AND I AM, CAN YOU HEAR ME OKAY? AND, UH, OUR OFFICE IS HERE TODAY, UH, IN SUPPORT OF SEVERAL DISTRICTS THAT ACTUALLY, UM, OVERLAP, UM, IN WITHIN HOUSE DISTRICT 100, WHICH IS, UH, DISTRICTS 2, 4, 5, AND SEVEN.
UM, BUT WE ARE HERE, UH, JUST TO LEARN MORE ABOUT, UM, WHAT, UH, WE CAN DO FROM THE STATE SIDE, UM, IN TERMS OF SUPPORTING ANY OF THE SENIOR ACTIVITIES THAT, UH, ARE TAKING PLACE, UH, WITHIN THE CITY OF DALLAS.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER, UH, MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC THAT'D LIKE TO SPEAK IS HERE AS WELL? OKAY.
UH, COUNCIL MEMBER GRACIE HERE, AND JUST WANTING TO, UH, ONE, UH, PUBLICLY SAY THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND PUBLICLY THANK, UH, MY APPOINTEE, UH, BERNARD MITCHELL FOR ALL OF HER WORK, UH, AND CONTINUED SUPPORT, UH, AS WE MOVE FORWARD, UH, UNDER THIS.
I'M A LITTLE BIT TARDY GETTING ALL OF MY ASSIGNMENTS TOGETHER, BUT PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE, UH, REASSIGNED IF, IF YOU SO WILL.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO DO IS TO, TO, TO COME AND JUST SAY WE WERE BRIEF THIS MORNING IN QUALITY OF LIFE, AND I'M JUST SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THE COLLECTIVE EFFORTS THAT, UH, OUR OFFICE OF COMMUNITY CARE PARKS AND, UH, OUR, EVEN OUR DATA ANALYTICS TEAM HAVE BEEN DOING, UH, TO ONE, ASSESS THE NEEDS, BUT ALSO PUT PROGRAMMING AROUND IT.
UH, MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THIS, UM, UH, SERIES ON NETFLIX ABOUT THESE CENTURION COMMUNITIES THAT ARE LIVING WELL BEYOND, UH, A HUNDRED YEARS OR MORE.
AND WE'RE SEEING THAT THE COMMON THEME SEEMS TO BE COMMUNITY CULTURE AND ACTIVITY, AND WHAT THE TEAM HAS PUT TOGETHER AND WITHIN BRIEF US ON THIS MORNING GIVES ME A LOT OF EXCITEMENT.
AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO CONTINUED WORK, UH, THAT YOU ALL ARE DOING AND HOW I CAN FURTHER SUPPORT ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS.
[00:05:01]
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.AND MS. VERNON, PUBLICLY, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU.
I, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR COMING IN THE FOUR YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN ON THE COMMISSION.
IT'S THE FIRST TIME THE CITY COUNCIL PERSON HAS EVER BEEN PRESIDENT AT ONE OF OUR MEETINGS.
BUT DAVE, I I APPRECIATE YOU BRINGING THAT UP.
BUT IT'S, IT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED BECAUSE I THINK AT TIMES THIS COMMISSION HAS FELT AS THOUGH WE TALK ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS AND WE MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL AND NOTHING HAPPENS.
AND, UH, IT'S BEEN THAT WAY FOR MANY YEARS, IN MY OPINION.
UH, THIS YEAR WAS QUITE DIFFERENT THAN ANY YEAR IN THE PAST.
AND WE APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THAT YOU PROVIDED, UH, FOR THE THINGS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO.
AND ALL THE OTHER COUNCILS OF PEOPLE THAT BOARD IT, IT'S AN IMPORTANT THING THAT HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED TOO LONG.
SO, JUST SO YOU KNOW, JESSICA SHAW MADE THAT VERY CLEAR TO US THIS MORNING, UH, IN THE MOST PROFESSIONAL WAYS, BUT SHE MADE THAT VERY CLEAR.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.
WE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO ON THE PANEL.
THEY KEEP AN EYE ON THEM GUYS.
UH, NEXT ITEM ON THE AGENDA IS APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE, UH, AUGUST MEETING.
EVERYONE GOT A COPY? IF ANYBODY HAVE ANY COMMENTS, ORIONS TO THE MINUTES.
IF NOT, I WOULD TAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES.
UM, THE CHAIR'S REPORT, I HAD, UH, A COUPLE THINGS THAT I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT.
UH, EVERYBODY KNOWS THE
UH, THE, UM, THE OTHER THINGS I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT A LITTLE BIT IS I THINK EVERYBODY, UH, EVERYBODY HAD A PART IN COMING UP WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS GROUP OR THIS BODY FOR BUDGET, UH, PRIORITY RECOMMENDATIONS.
AND AS I WAS SAYING, THIS IS REALLY THE FIRST TIME SINCE I'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN IT OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS THAT SOMETHING ACTUALLY CAME OF IT.
AND, UH, I THINK WE, UH, I, I THINK THE REPORT ITSELF WAS GOOD, BUT THE, THE, THE WORK THAT WE DID WITH THE DATA ANALYTICS GROUP OF ACTUALLY HAVING FACTUAL INFORMATION TO SUPPORT WHAT WE WERE SAYING IN THE PAST, IT'S ALL BEEN ANECDOTAL.
AND, YOU KNOW, ANECDOTAL INFORMATION IS GREAT AND IT MAY GET SOMEBODY'S ATTENTION, BUT IF YOU WANT SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, YOU BETTER BE ABLE TO HAVE FACTS TO DO THAT.
AND, AND WE'VE GOT SIGNIFICANT ISSUES IN THE SENIOR COMMUNITY THAT NO ONE HAS REALIZED JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE THAT WERE AFFECTED.
AND IT'S, UH, AT 140,000 SENIORS AND PROBABLY A THIRD OF 'EM HAVE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES THAT, UH, NEED TO BE ADDRESSED.
AND IN SOME CASES, IT'S NOT THE CITY'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SOLVE THE, ALL OF THOSE PROBLEMS, BUT I DO THINK IT'S THE CITY'S RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE AND TO HELP ORGANIZE GROUPS TO MAKE SURE THAT WHATEVER ENTITIES SHOULD BE DOING IT ARE DOING IT.
UH, SO ANYWAY, THAT'S, I, I WAS REALLY PROUD OF, OF HOW ALL THAT TRANSPIRED.
AND THEN I WAS EVEN MORE PROUD WHEN IT LOOKED LIKE ONE OF THE COUNCIL MEMBERS WANTED TO, UH, REMOVE VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING THAT GOT INCLUDED IN THE SAME MANAGER'S BUDGET FOR SENIORS.
UH, AND, UH, ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT, SENDING OUT AN EMAIL, UM, ALMOST EVERYBODY ON THE COMMISSION, UH, SAID THAT THEY WOULD TALK TO THEIR COUNCILPERSON.
AND, UH, LO AND BEHOLD, IT WORKED.
AND, AND WE, THOSE, THOSE WERE ALL PRESERVED AND WE'RE, IT APPEARS THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT 'EM BEING IN THE CHOPPING BLOCK THIS YEAR ANYWAY.
UH, AND SO I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERYBODY WHO STEPPED UP, UH, AMONG THE, ON THE COMMISSION AND, UH, THANK THE COUNCIL MEMBERS WHO LISTENED TO THEIR COMMISSIONERS, UH, BECAUSE IT REALLY, REALLY DID MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.
AND I THINK THE NEXT YEAR IS WE MOVED INTO THE NEXT, UH, THIS NEXT TERM.
UH, I THINK THERE'S SOME EXCITING THINGS THAT ARE GONNA HAPPEN, AND THERE'S SOME GREAT OPPORTUNITIES.
AND, UH, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO LEADING THE
[00:10:01]
COMMISSION FOR TWO MORE YEARS.I FOUND OUT THIS MORNING THAT THE MAYOR IS GOING TO REAPPOINT ME AS CHAIR.
UH, SO WE'RE, UH, WE'RE GONNA BE WORKING ON ALL THAT.
AND THAT'S GREAT, AND I, I APPRECIATE EVERYBODY'S SUPPORT.
CAN I, CAN I JUST, I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY INVALUABLE TO THIS WHOLE PROCESS WAS THE DATA ANALYSIS.
AND AS YOU KNOW, I USE THAT IN SOME OF MY EMAILS AND MM-HMM.
WELL, I THINK THERE'S MORE TO BE LEARNED YES.
ABOUT WHAT THE REAL NEEDS ARE.
AND, UH, BUT THAT'S WHAT THIS NEXT COUPLE YEARS IS GONNA BE YES.
AND, UH, I HAD A, I I HAD A CONVERSATION LAST NIGHT WITH DEBBIE AUSTIN THAT, THAT, UH, AND, AND CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, DEBBIE, BUT IN A NUTSHELL, UH, SHE TOLD ME SHE THOUGHT ALL I CARED ABOUT WERE NUMBERS AND, AND THAT, UH, THEN SHE LISTENED TO THE INTERVIEW THAT I DID FOR, UH, CHANNEL FIVE.
AND, UH, HE MIGHT REALLY CARE ABOUT PEOPLE TOO,
AND, UH, I, I THINK WE ARE, WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS, AND I THINK IT'S AN EXCITING TIME TO BE PART OF THIS, OF THIS ORGANIZATION.
HOPEFULLY WE CAN, UH, CONTINUE MAKING MORE PROGRESS.
BECAUSE YOU HAVE, YOU HAVE ME, YOU HAVE WORKED HARD MAKING DECISION.
WELL, IT'S SOMEWHAT OF A LABOR LOVE.
LET'S MOVE ON AND, UH, QUICKLY GO THROUGH DISTRICT UPDATE.
UM, WE'D START WITH WHOEVER WOULD LIKE TO START, WE'D START ONLINE.
LISA, HAVE YOU GOT ANYTHING FROM YOUR DISTRICT? I DO NOT HAVE ANY UPDATES.
DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING FROM YOUR DISTRICT? NO, NOTHING NEW.
CARMEN, I CAN'T SEE CARMEN'S IN YOUR CORNER.
DO YOU HAVE AU DO YOU STILL HAVE AWESOME.
DO YOU DO, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? NOW I CAN.
UM, I, I DON'T KNOW IF I'M SPEAKING OUTTA TURN OR, OR IS IT MY TURN TO SAY SOMETHING? GO, GO AHEAD.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IS THAT, UM, WHAT THE COUNCILMAN MENTIONED ABOUT COMMUNITY CULTURE, THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
I HAVE FOUND THAT TO BE IN, WORKING AT, AT THIS COMMISSION.
AND ACTUALLY, I DO HAVE A FULL-TIME JOB THAT I WORK WITH SENIORS.
IT IS SO DISTINCTLY NECESSARY.
UH, THE CITY OF DALLAS DOES HAVE RESOURCES THAT WE CAN USE.
LIKE WHEN I THROW A PARTY, THERE'S NO WAY, UM, I COULD DO WHAT I DO IF THE CITY OF DALLAS THROUGH THEIR CULTURAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT WASN'T THERE TO, TO SUPPORT US AND THEN FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IT.
WELL, I'M LOOKING AT MY CALENDAR HERE.
THERE'S A GRAND OPENING FOR A PROPERTY THAT I'VE BEEN TOLD WILL BE DEDICATED FOR SENIORS.
AND, UH, IT'S GONNA BE ON NOVEMBER 9TH.
THAT'S NOT WHEN WE MEET, BUT SO PEOPLE COULD BE AWARE OF IT, IS THAT I'M BRINGING IT UP.
IT'S A BRAND NEW CONSTRUCTION.
IT'LL BE ON A THURSDAY ON THE NINTH AT, UM, 2:00 PM CARMEN, WHERE IS THAT? UH, LET ME GIVE YOU THE, THE EXACT ADDRESS IS 63 6 30 SOUTH LUAN AVENUE AVENUE HERE IN DALLAS, OF COURSE, HERE IN OAK CLIFF BY CHAIR.
AND IT, AND IT, YES, THAT'S WHAT IT, IT SAYS, UH, IT'S CALLED THE OAKS, THE OAKS GRAND OPENING THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH.
THAT'S AT 2:00 PM AT 2:00 PM IT'S A VERY BEAUTIFUL BUILDING, AND IT'S TAKEN A LOT OF THE MAKINGS,
[00:15:01]
BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.UM, CARMEN, IS THAT A PRIVATELY OWNED PROPERTY, DO YOU KNOW? NO, NO.
TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THEY ARE NOT.
IT HAS TO DO SOMETHING WITH, UH, THE HOUSING DEPARTMENT THAT'S ON HAMPTON.
SO MAYBE IT'S WITH THE D H A OR SOMETHING.
NOW, AS FAR AS FINANCING AND ALL THAT, I DON'T HAVE IT, BUT I WILL HAVE IT BEFORE THEN BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT FAR FROM WHERE I AM ON A DAILY BASIS.
SO, YES, I'VE HEARD OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING, BUT I'VE ALSO KNOWN OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN OAK CLIFF FOR A ONE BEDROOM, 1200, $1,500.
WELL, MOST OF THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH COULD NEVER MOVE IN THERE, BUT, UM, IF IT'S A REASONABLE, A MORE REALISTIC, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, I'LL GLADLY SHARE IT WITH YOU.
VERNON, DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING? GOOD AFTERNOON.
JUST LIKE TO SHARE THAT ON SATURDAY, EXCUSE ME.
UH, SEVERAL DISTRICTS CAME TOGETHER AT, UM, UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS FOR A REVIEW AND UPDATE OF THE PAST, UH, LEGIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION, THE 88TH LEGISLATIVE SESSION, AND THE PROPOSITIONS THAT WILL NOT ONLY AFFECT SENIORS, BUT AFFECT EVERYONE.
AND, UH, SENATOR WEST HAD PREPARED A BOOKLET THAT HAS A SUMMARY OF ALL OF THE PROPOSITIONS, AND I JUST WISH I WAS ABLE TO GET ENOUGH OF THOSE TO SHARE.
AND I'M, I'M STILL GOING TO TRY, UH, TO GET SOME, BECAUSE IT, IT'S, IT'S VERY VALUABLE.
UH, IN DISTRICT THREE, UH, YOU JUST MET OUR, UH, COUNCILMAN, UH, ZARIN, UH, GRACIE THAT IS CURRENTLY, UH, COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENTS FOR, UM, BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.
AND AFTER THAT, HE WILL BE DOING A 100 DAYS OF MEETING WITH, UH, HIS CONSTITUENTS AND PUTTING FORTH PLANS FOR THE DISTRICT.
I THINK, I GUESS JUST ASK IF THERE'S ANYBODY ELSE.
I THINK YOU COVERED, DID ANYBODY ELSE WHO'S ONLINE HAVE ANYTHING THAT I CAN'T READ THE, UH, SCREEN FROM HERE? UH, THIS IS, UH, COMMISSIONER AUSTIN, DISTRICT EIGHT.
WE HAD OUR FIRST FORWARD DALLAS MEETING, AND, UM, THEY TOLD US THAT WE WERE, THE TEST MEETING, IT DIDN'T GO VERY WELL.
UM, SOME OF THE RESIDENTS THAT ATTENDED, UM, A MISCONCEPTION OF WHAT THE, UM, THEY PROMISED TO COME BACK AND THEY ARE COMING BACK TOMORROW NIGHT.
UM, AND THEY'LL START ALL OVER.
HOPEFULLY THEY WILL, UH, ALLOW THE PRESENTERS TO PRESENT, UH, THE INFORMATION AND THEY WILL LISTEN WITH A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING AND AN OPEN MIND.
BUT, UM, WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY BECAUSE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WE'RE FINDING OUT THAT ACROSS FROM CARTER HIGH SCHOOL, SOME, UH, COMPANY IS OPENING A DISTRIBUTION CENTER.
WE'LL BE BUILDING A DISTRIBUTION CENTER RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HIGH SCHOOL AND NEXT TO, UH, FRIENDSHIP WEST BAPTIST CHURCH, WHICH IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.
WE KNOW THAT OUR AREA THAT SOUTH, SOUTH OF THE T TRINITY RIVER WAS ZONED INDUSTRIAL IN THE BEGINNING WHEN THE FOREFATHERS OF DALLAS DECIDED TO ZONE DALLAS.
AND SO WHAT WE'RE WORKING WITH IN FORWARD DALLAS IS TO GET THE ZONINGS CHANGED OR RESTRICTED SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE ALL THIS INDUSTRIAL STUFF GOING UP OVER HERE.
OUR COUNCILMAN AND COUNCIL, BASIL DOOR, BASEL DOZA FROM SOUTH DALLAS HAVE WRITTEN A LETTER TO THE TEXAS AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION BECAUSE THE SE A NEW BRAND NEW CEMENT PLANT HAS BEEN OPENED OVER ON THE TRINITY BASIN, THE TRINITY, I THINK IT'S CALLED, UM, SOME KIND OF, UH, CONS CONSERVATORY OR CONSERVATION PLACE, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO GO AND WALK THROUGH THERE.
AND I THINK THEY HAVE CLASSES THERE FOR SOME OF THE STUDENTS IN D I S D.
BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON, A CEMENT PLANT OPENED THERE, IT WAS SHUT DOWN, SOLD, AND THEN ANOTHER COMPANY OPENED IT BACK UP, AND THEY'RE OPERATING THERE, AND IT IS OPERATING IN VIOLATION OF, UH, ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY.
SO, UM, WE'RE TRYING TO GET SOME ZONING CHANGES DONE, IN OTHER WORDS.
[00:20:01]
IS SUPPOSED TO HELP US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT AND OUR COMMUNITY.ALSO, I ATTENDED, UM, THE SYNERGY EVENT.
I THINK I TOLD YOU ALL ABOUT IT.
THAT TOOK PLACE IN TARRANT COUNTY, WHICH IS AN AWESOME EVENT.
IT BRINGS IN ALL KINDS OF VENDORS.
I WOULD SAY THAT THERE WERE POSSIBLY 200, 300 VENDORS THERE.
UH, THERE WAS EVEN FACEBOOK THERE, IT'S CALLED, UH, META NOW.
UH, I GOT TONS OF INFORMATION THAT I CAN SHARE WITH, UH, ANYBODY THAT'S INTERESTED.
UM, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.
AND TIM O'HARE, WHO IS THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER, I BELIEVE, I THINK COUNTY JUDGE PUT THIS ON THIS YEAR BECAUSE HE, UH, TOOK THE PLACE OF THE GUY THAT RETIRED LAST YEAR.
BUT IT, IT WAS REALLY AWESOME.
AND I'VE BEEN ATTENDING FOR A WHILE.
ALSO, I WANTED TO SAY THAT I SENT AN EMAIL TO MACKAY AND TO JAMES BECAUSE DS, WHICH IS A DALLAS AREA GERONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY, HAS A SUMMIT COMING UP THAT'S GONNA BE EQUALLY INFORMATIVE.
IT IS GONNA COME UP IN OCTOBER.
AND I TALKED TO COMMISSIONER KLEIN ABOUT IT LAST NIGHT, AND I SENT HIM A, A PICTURE OF THE FLYER.
AND, UM, IF MIAH AND, UH, JAMES GET A CHANCE TO LOOK AT IT, HOPEFULLY THEY WILL SHARE IT WITH YOU.
AND THERE IS A SENIOR EVENT COMING UP, UH, AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER AT THE ARBORETUM.
AND YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO, UM, JUST GOOGLE, UM, DALLAS ARBORETUM SENIOR EXPO, AND YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO, UH, REGISTER FOR IT, BUT IT'S FREE AND IT SHOULD BE SIMILAR WITH LOTS OF INFORMATION AND RESOURCES FOR SENIORS.
THERE WAS A MAN AT OUR COMMUNITY COALITION MEETING FROM 3 1 1 DEPARTMENT DALLAS 3 1 1, AND HE TOLD US ABOUT SOMETHING CALLED BRANCH OUT DALLAS.
AND HE SAID, IF YOU CALL 3 1 1 THAT YOU CAN, UH, REGISTER FOR NO, NO CALL GOOGLE BRANCH OUT DALLAS, AND YOU CAN GET TREES FOR FREE.
HE SAID THEY HAVE FRUIT TREES, OTHER KIND OF TREES FOR FREE.
YOU REGISTER NOW, PICK UP LATER, BUT YOU HAVE TO REGISTER WITH BRANCH OUT DALLAS.
BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY NEAT THAT THE TREES WERE FREE AND USUALLY THEY'RE JUST REGULAR TREES, BUT THEY DO HAVE FRUIT TREES NOW.
MARILYN, DID YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS? WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO TO YOU? DID YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS FROM YOUR DISTRICT? YEAH, WE HAD OUR, UH, FASCINATION, UH, FOR THE COVID AND THE NEW, UH, VIRUSES COMING ON.
AND WE ALSO WENT TO THE SS A S TO THE SENIOR, UH, THING FOR, UH, RALEIGH TO ENJOY TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT THE EPIDEMIC IS COMING BACK AND HOW IT'S GOING BE.
AND WE, UH, AT MAD NASH, WE HAD A, A THING FOR THE KIDS AND WE BUILT A PARK OVER OMAR MADE SURE THEY PUT A BASKETBALL.
SO EVERYTHING IS DOING PRETTY WELL IN MY DISTRICT EXCEPT WE HAVING PROBLEMS ABOUT THE HOUSES BEING REMODELED AND REBUILT.
AND THEY NOT, THEY NOT GETTING ON IT.
THEY HAVEN'T, THEY DIDN'T DO IT BEFORE AND THEY HAVEN'T STARTED YET.
IT GOING THROUGH A LOT OF CHANGES, BUT THEY STILL COMING UP TO THE CENTER, BUT THE PURPOSE CENTER, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAVE THEY DID WRONG AND THEY REQUESTED MORE PAPERS FROM, BUT SOME OF 'EM SUBMITTED THEY PAPER BEFORE THE EPIDEMIC STARTED AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T HEARD NOTHING.
SO YEAH, THAT'S A PROBLEM IN MY, UH, DISTRICT.
BUT OMAR SAID HE'S GONNA CHECK INTO IT AND MAKE SURE IT GETS RIGHT, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, WE OKAY.
COMMISSIONER DANIELS, IS THAT, IS THERE REPAIR WORK? YES, MA'AM.
AND SOME OF THE WOMEN BEFORE THEN HAD FOR THEY HOUSE TO BE DID ALL OVER AGAIN, THEY PACKED THEIR STUFF AND MOVED IT OUT RIGHT BEFORE THE EPIDEMIC.
AFTER THE EPIDEMIC CAME, THEY DIDN'T DO IT.
SO AFTER THE EPIDEMIC, THEY STILL TRYING TO GET IN AND GET THEIR PLACE, AND THEY TOLD 'EM THEY DIDN'T HAVE NO MONEY.
BUT NOW I'M UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY DO HAVE SOME MONEY, BUT THEY TOLD THEM THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY, SO NO, THEY NOT GETTING THEIR HOUSES DEAD OVER THERE.
WELL, HE CAME AND SPOKE TO US, REMEMBER LAST MONTH? YES, HE DID.
AND THOSE PEOPLE ARE STILL WAITING.
[00:25:01]
WE'RE GONNA HAVE SOMEBODY, UH, FROM HOUSING SPEAK TO US TODAY AND PROBABLY ADDRESS THAT QUESTION.I APPRECIATE VERY MUCH BECAUSE THAT'S MIND BOTHERING TO ME BECAUSE THEY KEEP SAYING, WHAT IS THE CITY DOING? WE DONE BEEN AND TOOK CARE OF EVERYTHING THEY SAY.
EVERY TIME WE GO BACK, THEY WANT ANOTHER PIECE OF PAPER AND THEY SENT IT TO 'EM AND THEY STILL WAITING.
AND THAT WAS BEFORE THE EPIDEMIC.
DO YOU HAVE ANY, UH, THANK GOD FOR YOUR, I CAN JUST SEND DISTRICT FOUR MAYOR PRO TEAM, UH, CAROLYN KING ONLY HOSTING, UM, HOSTING BOND MEETING ON THE 10TH OF OCTOBER AT HAPA WILLIAMS, OR EITHER BECKLEY, ONE OF THE TWO.
SO IN THAT BOND MEETING, THERE'S WHERE I'M GONNA BE LISTENING TO SEE WHERE WE CAN INTERJECT OUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE CENTER WE TRYING TO DO, AND I'M ELOISE LUNDY IN THE BOTTOM DISTRICT, AND I WANT MY CENTER UPDATED AND UM, REMODELED TOO.
SO WE GONNA GET READY TO START HAVING OUR BOND MEETING, BUT DISTRICT FOUR.
UM, I HAVE SOME TREES THAT I KILLED.
SO
AND I WANT TO SEND A SHOUT OUT TO MY, UH, COUNCIL PERSON,
AND WHEN WE TALK, WHEN WE, IT'S A WHOLE ONE WHEN, UH, WE MEET, I MEET WITH HIM.
UM, HE DID MENTION SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT, THAT WE HAD.
AND IT WAS GOOD JUST TO SEE THE, ALL THE COMMISSIONERS REALLY ENGAGED AND PAYING ATTENTION, NOT ON THEIR PHONES, NOT, BUT REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS GOING ON AND REALLY HAD A HEART FOR, UH, THE SENIORS.
AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE, UM, THEM PAYING ATTENTION, YOU KNOW, IF YOU CAN LOOK LIKE THIS, BUT YOU DOING SOMETHING ELSE.
SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE
JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS YOU MAY HAVE KNOWN, KNOWN ALREADY ABOUT THIS.
THIS IS, UH, WAY TO SAVE WATER, ALL ASSIGNED TO CONCERNED ABOUT THE WATER AND ENVIRONMENT AND, UH, HOW TO GET FREE, UH, IRRIGATION CHECKS FROM THE CITY AND ALSO THE NEW THRONE FOR YOUR HOME PLACEMENT.
THE PROGRAM, UH, TO GET AT LEAST TWO AUDITS IN YOUR, HOW YOU CAN LET YOUR, UH, CONSTITUENTS KNOW THAT THOSE OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE.
WOULD YOU GIVE A COPY OF WHAT YOU JUST PASSED OUT HERE TO
JUST, UH, WHAT I PICKED UP AT MY DISTRICT MEETING.
UH, CAN YOU GET A COPY OF THE BUDGET BRIEF TO SEND TO EVERYBODY MY RECORDS HERE? OKAY.
SHE, YES, I, I, UH, WELL, I DID GO TO THE BUDGET HEARING THAT WAS ACTUALLY HELD, UH, BY COUNCILMAN RIDLEY IN 14 IN COUNCILMAN MORENO FOR DISTRICT TWO.
AND I DID SPEAK TO THE ISSUES THAT THAT, BUT SOME OF THE BUDGET ITEMS, THE NEW THINGS THAT WE HAVE BEEN PROPOSED, UH, STAFF HAD PRESENTED IT AND I TOLD 'EM THEY STOLE MY SPEECH, BUT I DID ADDRESS THAT AND, UM, I'M REALLY GLAD TO HEAR THAT THOSE THINGS HAVE BEEN DR YOU KNOW, THEY'RE NO LONGER ON THAT KILL LIST.
UM, I'VE BEEN MEETING WITH THE
AND, UM, HE AND I WENT TO, UH, A PRESENTATION MR. HART MADE IN PARK THE OTHER DAY TO TRY TO SEE IF THOSE THINGS WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR THE SENIORS AT, UH, XAL PARK.
AND THEN HE ALSO REALLY WANTS TO, I'LL BE GOING TO THE BOND MEETING AND I'LL BE DOING SOME EMAILS ABOUT THE BOND ISSUE BECAUSE THAT CENTER DOES ALSO WANT TO BE PART OF THE FUND, UH, UH, PROGRAM AND IN PART TO INCREASE THE CAPACITY FOR SERVING SENIORS.
I DID GO TO THE, UH, WILLIE B. JOHNSON CENTER TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT HAD BEEN DONE OUT THERE.
I, I THINK, I DON'T REMEMBER WHICH DI THAT'S MR. THAT WAS MR. MAGUS,
[00:30:01]
I GUESS MS. STEWART'S DISTRICT.I DON'T KNOW WHO THE REP THAT IS A FANTASTIC PROGRAM.
AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE DIRECTOR THAT'S RUNNING IT AND SHE'S RUNNING IT ON A SHOES STRING, BUT IT WAS FABULOUS AND IT WAS WELL ATTENDED.
SO, UH, ANYWAY, THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT I'VE BEEN DOING AND OKAY, MOVING FORWARD.
NOBODY MENTIONED THE GOLDEN GAMES.
I DID ATTEND THE KICKOFF CEREMONY AND, AND, UH, IT A GOOD TIME.
WAS THAT BY ALL, AND UH, ACTUALLY MY CITY COUNCIL PERSON WAS THE COUNCIL PERSON WHO, UH, SPOKE AT THE EVENT.
HAVE HER SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND SHE HAD A LOT OF GOOD COMMENTS ABOUT SENIORS.
SO WE'RE, WE'RE, UH, WE, I THINK WE'RE DOING WELL ON THAT.
UH, WITH THAT, LET'S MOVE ON WITH THE AGENDA AND OUR FIRST, UH, BRIEFING FROM STAFF RELATED PEOPLE, UH, IS BRIEFING FOR THE ASAP PROGRAM AND THERE EVERYBODY, OR MOST EVERYBODY, UH, NEW
AND HE RETIRED AND IS MORE THAN, UM, MORE THAN CONFIDENT REPLACEMENT IS HERE TO TELL US WHAT HER FIRST FEW WEEKS HAVE BEEN LIKE AND, UH, KEEP US ON WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE PROGRAM.
SORRY, IT'S NOT MORNING ANYMORE.
I DID TAKE THE BIG SHOES OF DAR PEARLS, THE FILL NOW THAT HE IS NICE AND RETIRED, BUT I AM NOW THIS THE NEW SERVICE AREA MANAGER FOR THE SENIOR PROGRAM DIVISION AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE CITY QUITE A WHILE, BEEN WITH THEM SINCE I WAS 16 YEARS OLD.
THAT WAS JUST A FEW YEARS AGO THOUGH.
UM, AND I'VE JUST WORKED MY WAY UP THROUGH THE PARK DEPARTMENT, SO I'VE BEEN A REC REP FOR YEARS.
MY AUNT WORKED FOR THE CITY AS WELL, SO I GUESS IT'S IN THE BLOOD.
UM, SO I STARTED OFF AS A SEASONAL EMPLOYEE AND BECAME THE COORDINATOR OF RECREATION, UH, AT THE PROGRAMS AT LAKE HIGHLANDS NORTH RECREATION CENTER.
I WAS THERE FOR ABOUT SEVEN YEARS, BECAME THE MANAGER.
I LEFT THE CITY FOR THIS AMOUNT OF TIME,
BUT I QUICKLY RAN BACK HOME TO DALLAS WHERE, WHERE I BELONG.
UM, LOUISVILLE WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE.
I DEFINITELY GOT A LOT FROM THERE FROM THERE, BUT DALLAS IS DEFINITELY HOME FOR ME.
AND I CAME BACK AS THE COMMUNITY PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR THE RECREATION SERVICES DIVISION AND SUPPORTED SERVICE AREA TOO, WHICH IS, UM, EAST DALLAS ALL THE WAY DOWN TO PLEASANT GROVE AND DOWN TO CLEAVER RILEY, WHICH IS A VERY FAR SOUTHERN POINT OF THE CITY.
I GUESS IT'S NECK AND NECK WITH TOMMY ALLEN.
UM, BUT UM, SO I HELPED SUPPORT THAT SIDE OF THE RENER OF THAT SIDE OF TOWN.
UM, AND NOW I'VE BEEN UP HERE AT CITY HALL BEING THE FINANCIAL SERVICES MANAGER FOR THE LAST YEAR, BUT QUICKLY FOUND OUT THAT, UM, I DON'T BELONG AT CITY HALL.
I BELONG OUT IN THE FIELD SERVING THE CITIZENS OF DALLAS, WHICH IS WHERE MY HEART IS.
SO I'M EXCITED TO BE FILLING THIS NEW POSITION AS DARRYL FLORALS AND I HOPE THAT I CAN DO ALL THE FUN, EXCITING THINGS THAT DARRYL DID AS WELL.
UM, A COUPLE OF THINGS I'M GONNA DO WITH THE SENIOR PROGRAM DIVISION AS I'M THREE WEEKS IN AND STILL LEARNING.
I MEAN, I, OF COURSE I'VE BEEN WITH THE CITY FOREVER IT SEEMS LIKE, BUT TAKING ON A WHOLE NEW ROLE, A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE OVER EVERYTHING.
SO, UM, I'M LOOKING TO REVAMP THE PROGRAM IN A POSITIVE WAY, NOT IN A BAD WAY, BUT WE'RE GONNA ADD SOME MORE POSITIONS IN THERE, SOME NEW RESTRUCTURING.
UM, I'M LOOKING TO GROW THE PROGRAM, OF COURSE DARRYL DID SOME PHENOMENAL THINGS, BUT I WANNA TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER.
UM, SO I KNOW THAT WILL BE GREAT.
OF COURSE, I'M GONNA CONTINUE THE COMMUNICATION WITH THE SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION AND BUILDING OUR RELATIONSHIP AND WHATEVER WE CAN DO TO HELP YOU GUYS.
AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE HERE FOR.
AND THEN WE'RE GONNA, CURRENTLY, WE'RE ALSO GONNA STRENGTHEN AND GROW OUR CURRENT PARTNERSHIPS.
SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW CHAPTER AT THE SENIOR PROGRAM DIVISION, AND IT'S GONNA BE FUN AND EXCITING.
ANYBODY HAVE ANY WELL, WELCOME.
WHEN YOU SAY CURRENT PARTNERSHIP, CAN YOU ELABORATE JUST A LITTLE BIT? YOU MEAN WITH US OR WITH OTHERS? WITH YOU GUYS.
AND WE ALSO HAVE OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH WELLMED, UM, UNITED HEALTHCARE, ALL OF THE, I THINK CRYSTAL BRIEF ON IT THIS MORNING AT THE COUNCIL BRIEFING, BUT WE HAVE QUITE A FEW PARTNERSHIPS.
THAT WE'RE GONNA CONTINUE ON WITH, WE'RE NOT MIXING ANYBODY, WE'RE KEEPING EVERYBODY.
WE'RE JUST GONNA TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER.
SO DO ALL, I VISITED SOME OF THE CENTERS TO LOOK AT THEIR SCHEDULES.
DO ALL OF THE CENTRIS NOW HAVE THE ASAP PROGRAM? ARE YOU AWARE OF WHETHER THEY DO OR NOT? UM, I KNOW THAT CURRENTLY WE ARE IN OVER 20 RECREATION CENTERS, INCLUDING WILLIE B. JOHNSON,
[00:35:02]
UM, WHICH WAS JUST MENTIONED, UM, SINGING HILLS HAS THEIR OWN RE PARK DOES FRE PARK.I WATCHED SOME STUFF THIS MORNING.
AND THEN WE ARE ALSO PROGRAMMING ALL OF OUR, AFTER OUR ASAP PROGRAM TO, WE'VE ADDED FRIDAYS IN, SO THE PROGRAMMING'S MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NOW INSTEAD OF MONDAY.
SO THURSDAY, WHICH IS THE ONLY SCHEDULE I HAVE.
KYLE IS TRYING TO CATCH SOMEONE.
I SHOULD, UH, JARVIS HAS I SOMEONE HAS THEIR HAND UP.
I JUST, I STILL HAVE MY HAND UP.
UM, LINDSAY, THANK YOU FOR COMING AND, UH, GOOD LUCK IN YOUR, UH, IN NEWEST ENDEAVOR.
UH, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PETE AND WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER IN THE MEETING WAS MEASUREMENTS AND HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE SENIORS AND WHAT THEIR DEMOGRAPHICS LOOK LIKE.
UH, I KNOW ONE OF THE WISHES THAT I HAVE IN LOOKING AT OUR REC CENTERS IS SOME KIND OF MEASUREMENT OF HOW WELL THOSE PROGRAMS ARE ATTENDED OR NOT ATTENDED.
SO AS YOU GO THROUGH YOUR EVALUATIONS, UH, IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED IF YOU CAN BE THINKING ABOUT HOW DO WE MEASURE THIS? HOW DO WE, UH, FIND OUT WHETHER PEOPLE LIKE THESE PROGRAMS OR USING THESE PROGRAMS, UM, IN SOME, YOU KNOW, EVEN IN A GOING FORWARD BASIS.
UM, BUT THAT'S JUST A COMMENT THAT I HAVE OF PART OF MY WISHLIST FOR YOU.
AND THAT'S ON MY LIST OF THINGS TO DO.
I PLAN ON GETTING OUT TO ALL OF THE RECREATION CENTERS AND DOING A SURVEY WITH ALL THE PARTICIPANTS TO SEE WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE AND WHAT, WHAT IT IS THAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR FROM US.
SO THAT WAY WE CAN HEAD IN THAT DIRECTION AS WELL.
BUT YES, DEFINITELY SOME MEASUREMENTS WILL BE IN PLACE.
SO YOU, IS THIS A FORMAL SURVEY OR AN INFORMAL SURVEY THAT YOU'RE GONNA BE DOING AT THE VARIOUS SITES? WE CAN DO, WE CAN DO MAKE IT A FORMAL SURVEY IF NEEDED.
UM, I WAS GONNA MAKE IT VERY INFORMAL AND JUST GIVE THEM A LINK TO TAKE THE, THE, THE SURVEY, GIMME THEIR FEEDBACK ON WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR SO THAT WAY WE KNOW HOW TO TAKE THEIR PROGRAM.
SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE, UH, HELPFUL TO US IS IF, IF YOU'RE GONNA BE SURVEYING THEM ANYWAY, IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO, UH, ASK WHOEVER YOU'RE SURVEYING, WHAT DO THEY VIEW AS THE THREE BIGGEST ISSUES CONFRONTING SENIORS? OKAY.
WHERE THEY LIVE, WHERE THAT TYPE OF THING.
AND I, I KNOW THAT TRANSPORTATION IS FREQUENTLY CITED, RIGHT? IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS OF GETTING TO THESE PROGRAMS, UH, SOMETHING.
BUT IF WE COULD GET A LITTLE, LITTLE BIT MORE, PARTICULARLY IF WE'RE GONNA BE GOING ALL OVER THE STUDY DOING THIS, IT WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL TO HAVE SOME KIND OF A SUMMARY OF HOW DID THEY RESPOND TO THAT? THAT KIND OF A QUESTION.
UM, UH, MOST OF THE CENTERS HAVE A BILLBOARD, I THINK.
IS THAT WHAT THEY'RE CALLED? POLICE? ARE THEY STILL CALLED LIKE OUTSIDE? WHAT ARE THEY CALLED? OH, OH, THE OUTSIDE.
UM, AND, UM, IT WOULD BE GREAT SINCE COMMUNICATION IS ROUGH, SO IF THEY, IF SOME WAY EITHER THE MARQUEE CAN HAVE SOME TEASERS ON IT OR A WAY TO CONNECT WITH THEM, UM, I THINK THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
SO EVEN SOMETHING LIKE MOST OF 'EM HAVE SENIOR PROGRAMS, BUT NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS IT.
SO IF THEY CAN SAY SENIOR PROGRAMS, UM, EMAIL COULD OR COULD NOT HELP.
BUT, UH, AND THE WEBSITE IS CUMBERSOME BECAUSE I'VE TRIED THAT.
BUT DID YOU TRY, I MEAN, I WAS LIKE, I GAVE UP AND I'M FAIRLY OKAY AND I WAS LIKE, I CAN'T FIGURE THIS WEBSITE OUT.
UM, BUT IF WE COULD SAY, CALL A NUMBER FOR INFORMATION OR IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN COME INSIDE PROGRAMMING SENIORS COME INSIDE SENIORS COMING.
YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA ACTUALLY.
I, OH, WAS IT ON ME? I LIKE THAT IDEA.
YOU SAID WE DON'T HAVE A, A MARQUE IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD.
SO WOULD THAT BE, WE CAN HAVE, SO WE COULD GET THE WORD OUT WITH MORE PEOPLE, BECAUSE I AM IN THE BOTTOM DISTRICT AND
THEY TRYING TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS WITH THE RIGHT.
I'M NOT IN CHARGE OF MARQUEES.
I COULD SEND THE MESSAGE TO BE PUT ON THE MARQUEE, BUT AS FAR AS THE INSTALLATION OF THE MARQUEE, THAT WOULD BE THE CENTER MANAGER.
THERE'S ALSO A FACEBOOK PAGE PORTIA'S BEEN TRYING TO SPEAK FOR AROUND THE, DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO REACH OUT TO
[00:40:01]
SENIORS IN THE L G B T Q COMMUNITY? OH, ABSOLUTELY.COULD YOU DIVULGE SOME OF THEM? I MEAN, WE'RE GONNA CONNECT WITH THEM JUST AS WE WOULD ANYBODY ELSE? I MEAN, IF WE NEED TO, IF RIVER SEAN, I KNOW YOU'VE BEEN AT RIVER SEAN QUITE A BIT.
IF WE NEED TO GO TO RIVERON AND TAP INTO ONE OF THEIR EVENTS INSTEAD OF THE BOOTH TO TAKE A SURVEY, THEN WE'LL TAP INTO THAT THAT WAY.
OR ANYBODY ELSE IN THE COMMUNITY THAT'S GOT, UM, EVENTS GOING ON, WE'LL GO INTO THE SENIOR PROGRAM AND, AND TAKE THE SURVEY THERE.
SO WHATEVER WE'VE GOTTA DO TO, TO BE OUT THERE TO PUT OUR FACES OUT THERE AND GET
NO, I MEAN, DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO REACH OUT TO MEMBERS OF THE L G B T Q COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY ARE WELCOME IN THE FACILITIES AS WELL AS ANY PLANS TO BRING THEM INTO THE REC CENTERS? BECAUSE THAT'S A MAJOR PROBLEM.
SO WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING ABOUT THAT? WELL, IT'S DEFINITELY WE NEED TO START WITH OUR STAFF AND MAKE OUR STAFF TRAIN OUR STAFF PROPERLY TO ALLOW CITIZENS OF THE L G B T L G B T Q COMMUNITY TO FEEL WELCOME AT OUR REC CENTERS.
I MEAN, ANYBODY THAT COMES INTO OUR REC CENTERS PERIOD SHOULD FEEL WELCOME.
THAT NEEDS TO BE A CONVERSATION THAT NEEDS TO BE HAD WITH OUR UPPER MANAGEMENT, BUT I'M HAPPY TO ADDRESS IT WITH MY STAFF AS WELL.
I I KNOW THAT CRYSTAL IS, IS VERY L G B T LGBTQ FRIENDLY.
SO, UM, BUT IN YOUR NEW POSITION, WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE THAT THE NEEDS OF SENIORS IN MY COMMUNITY ARE MADE TO FEEL WELCOME? I'M GONNA GIVE THEM THE SURVEY JUST AS I WOULD ANYBODY ELSE.
AND I THINK THAT YOU'D BE A GREAT PERSON TO HELP ME GET THAT, THAT SURVEY OUT TO THE COMMUNITY, IT SOUNDS LIKE.
SO, UM, CAN WE CONNECT? ABSOLUTELY.
WE'VE WORKED WITH TOGETHER BEFORE.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE, BUT YES, ABSOLUTELY.
WE DEFINITELY WANT EVERYBODY TO COME AND JOIN.
SO, I, I JUST, AND I'M BEING RHETORICAL, BUT I REALLY DO WANNA EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR COMMUNICATION.
AND I KNOW WE FEEL SO STRONGLY THAT THAT IS ONE OF THE POSITIONS WE'VE ASKED FOR, JUST NOT JUST FOR PARKS, BUT, UH, I LIVE NEAR SAL PARK IS IN MY DISTRICT, BUT I LIVE MUCH CLOSER TO ANOTHER REC CENTER THAT THE ONLY THING I'VE EVER SEEN ON NEXT DOOR IS WHEN IT'S GONNA BE CLOSED.
AND, UM, IS THAT HELPFUL? I, AND YET I KNOW THEY HAVE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS. I'VE BEEN TO LIKE ONE, THERE WAS A, IT'S BEEN A WHILE, BUT, YOU KNOW, A BIG PROGRAM FOR SENIORS.
THERE WERE LIKE THREE OF US THERE, AND IT'S A WONDERFUL CENTER AND THEY HAVE REALLY GOOD PROGRAMS, BUT I DON'T THINK THE WORD IS OUT AND I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING YOU DO.
AND I LIKE, UH, RENEE, I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TIME TO GO TO THE REC THE PRESENTATION AT KEITH PARK.
I FINALLY, I HAD TO MAKE TWO PHONE CALLS.
WELL, I MADE MY OTHER CALLS, BUT I FINALLY HAD TO CALL THE CENTER TWICE TO GET THAT INFORMATION.
AND WHEN I GO TO THE WEBSITE, YOU END UP ON THE, AND I'M NOT FAULTING YOU, I'M JUST INFORMING YOU APPRECIATE YEAH.
I MEAN, WE'LL, WE'LL GIVE YOU TILL NEXT MONTH, BUT
I I KNOW YOU ALL STRUGGLED TO JUST, AND I MEAN, JUST WHEN I WAS AT WILLIE B. JOHNSON, HER, I MEAN, IT'S HER AND ONE OTHER STAFF.
AND THEY WERE DOING AMAZING THINGS.
BUT YOU KNOW, THE COMMUNICATE, WHEN YOU GO TO THE WEBSITE, YOU JUST STAND UP ON PARKS AND REC AND YOU CAN'T FIND IN INDIVIDUAL INFORMATION ABOUT EACH REC CENTER.
AND THAT MAY BE PART OF THAT WOULD BE A, NOT THAT ALL SENIORS ARE USING THE INTERNET, BUT ANYWAY, THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
SO HERE'S THE COMMUNICATION ISSUE, UM, BECAUSE THE, THIS PROGRAM ADDRESSES WHAT YOU DO, ADDRESSES SO MANY OF THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMITTEES, THE ISOLATION, RIGHT? MM-HMM.
AND I MEAN, YOU, YOU'VE SERVED SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN COMMUNITIES.
MY NEIGHBORS ARE GOING TO THE RICHARDSON REC CENTER, A SENIOR CENTER.
AND WHY ARE THEY DOING THAT? BECAUSE THERE'S CHERRY YOGA THERE.
SO IF YOU GO TO FRED'S PARK, YOU SEE THAT THEY HAVE MULTIPLE OFFERINGS, BUT NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT IT.
SO, UM, SO I NEXTDOOR IS A GREAT IDEA ACTUALLY, KAREN, AND DO YOU KNOW WHAT NEXTDOOR IS? ARE YOU RIGHT? WHAT A FABULOUS IDEA TO PUBLICIZE PROGRAMS THERE.
[00:45:01]
WE HAVE A MAP TEAM THAT'S RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF OUR MARKETING, UM, THE STUFF IN THE PARK DEPARTMENT, AND THEY DO TAP IN THE NEXT DOOR FOR US.BUT I'LL MAKE SURE THAT CHAIRMAN KLEIN JUST SECOND MAKE SURE THAT'S AUSTIN.
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SPEAK WAIT, WAIT JUST A SECOND.
WHAT WERE YOU SAYING? MS. UH, OUR MAC TEAM DOES, DOES DO ALL OF OUR PUBLICIZING ON NEXTDOOR BE MAKE SURE THAT THEY CONTINUE TO DO THAT, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR SENIOR PROGRAMS. THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, DEBBIE? UM, I WAS, I'VE BEEN TRYING TO ADD THAT THERE IS A DALLAS PARK SENIOR PROGRAMS FACEBOOK PAGE.
IT'S CHANGED AND THERE'S A LINK ON THE OLD ONE THAT WILL LET YOU JOIN THE NEW ONE.
YOU CAN CLICK ON EVENTS YOU CAN CLICK ON, YOU CAN SEE PHOTOS OF EVENTS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE AT THE DIFFERENT SITES.
YOU CAN FIND OUT INFORMATION ABOUT THE DIFFERENT SITES AND ABOUT THE PARKS DEPARTMENT.
SO BOTH THE PARKS DEPARTMENT AND THE SENIOR PROGRAMS DEPARTMENT ARE ON FACEBOOK FOR IT.
AND SO THAT'S EASILY ACCESSIBLE.
AND OUR STAFF UPDATES THAT AND KEEPS IT UPDATED.
YEAH, THEY UPDATE IT CONSTANTLY.
AND IF YOU CALL THEIR OFFICE AT, AT THE SENIOR PROGRAMS TO OFFICE, THEY WILL TELL YOU HOW TO GET ON OR HOW TO SET UP YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.
THEY'LL ACTUALLY SEND YOU A LINK AND YOU JUST CLICK ON THE LINK AND JOIN.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE.
NEXT UP IS, UH, KEVIN MUND TO TALK TO US ABOUT THE KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM IN THE DEPARTMENT OF
THANK YOU ALL FOR HAVING ME THIS MORNING.
I'M A MANAGER WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE, AND I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT OUR MARKETING COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DIVISION THAT WE HAVE WITHIN A DEPARTMENT THAT WILL ALSO COVER OUR KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM.
SO, JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS PRESENTATION OVERVIEW, WE'LL TALK ABOUT OUR, THE DIVISION, UH, WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE, OUR OPERATIONS, OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN POPUPS, OUR COMMUNITY HAND TOOL PROGRAM, OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN TRASH OFF PROGRAM, AND AS I SAID PREVIOUSLY, OUR KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM.
SO JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR DIVISION AND WHAT WE DO AS A PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE, WE ARE CHARGED WITH THE TASK OF MARKETING OUR, UM, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DIVISION AS WE STRATEGICALLY PROMOTE AND COMMUNICATE THE ORGANIZATION'S BRAND PROGRAMS AND SERVICES TO ALL OF OUR CITY OF DALLAS RESIDENTS.
WE ALSO AIM TO FOSTER PROACTIVE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THROUGH INNOVATIVE MARKETING STRATEGY, EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION CHANNELS AND PROACTIVE COMMUNITY INITIATIVES.
AND OUR MISSION WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT IS SAFEGUARDING AND SUPPORTING A STRONG, HEALTHY COMMUNITY.
AND OUR DIRECTOR, MR. CHRISTOPHER CHRISTIAN, WE HAVE A BODACIOUS GOAL OF BEING THE BEST CODE COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION.
SO WHAT ARE SOME OPERATIONS, UH, THAT FALL UP UNDER OUR COMMUNITY, UH, MARKETING AND ENGAGEMENT DIVISION? WE HAVE OUR, AGAIN, MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION, WHICH INCLUDES OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS ON FACEBOOK, TWITTER, AND INSTAGRAM.
OUR VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT, OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN TRASH OFF PROGRAM, OUR COMMUNITY HAND TOOL PROGRAM, OUR KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM, OUR WASTE AND PLACE TRAINING PROGRAM THAT WE DO AT THE AREA SCHOOLS.
OUR REIMAGINED VACANCY PROGRAM, OR WE CALL IT VACANT LOT BEAUTIFICATION, OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT POPUPS AND OUR MURALS ON THE MOVE.
SO I'M JUST GONNA TALK ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
SO THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF DALLAS, OUR CODE COMPLIANCE, UH, NEIGHBORHOOD CODE REPS, ALONG WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR TEAM VISIT REC CENTERS, LIBRARIES, AND SENIOR PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
UH, RESPECTIVE YOU, IF YOU JUST SCROLL UP JUST A LITTLE BIT ON THAT SLIDE, YOU COULD SEE OUR NUMBERS AS IT RELATES TO OUR ENGAGEMENT FOCUS.
SO THIS YEAR FOR F PHYSICAL YEAR 23, WE VISITED 178 LOCATIONS.
AGAIN, THAT'S A COMBINATION OF RECREATION CENTERS, SENIOR PROGRAMS, AND LIBRARIES.
WE'VE GAVE ENGAGED WITH OVER 9,000 RESIDENTS AND FACILITATED AND DISTRIBUTED OVER 13,000 EDUCATION MATERIALS.
[00:50:01]
AND THAT'S UP, UH, SINCE FY 2022.SO OUR DEPARTMENT, WE'VE TAKEN A VERY STRONG PROACTIVE APPROACH IN ENSURING THAT ALL OUR PROGRAMS AND EDUCATION MATERIALS ARE MORE FRONT FACING WITH THE CITY OF DALLAS RESIDENTS.
SO, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS, ONE OF THE THINGS WE WEIGH HEAVY ON IS VOLUNTEERISM, UH, IN OUR DEPARTMENT.
AND THOSE COULD BE THINGS SUCH AS VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY CLEANUPS WITH NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS, AS WELL AS HELPING US GET SOME OF THE INFORMATION WE'RE TRYING TO GET OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY.
SO THIS YEAR, WE'RE PROUD TO SAY OUR VOLUNTEERISM IS UP, UH, WITH RESIDENTS, COMMUNITY GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE CITY OF DALLAS.
SO WE'VE ENGAGED WITH OVER 2,700 VOLUNTEERS DONATING OVER 9,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS TO THE CITY OF DALLAS, UH, WITH THE VALUE OF OVER $271,000 OF VOLUNTEER TIME AS IT EQUATES TO DOLLARS BACK TO THE CITY OF DALLAS.
AND AGAIN, THAT IS UP SINCE FY 2022.
SO WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENT, WE ORGANIZED A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY CLEANUPS, UH, WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS, VOLUNTEER GROUPS, COMPANIES AND CORPORATIONS, SCHOOLS, OR JUST EVERYDAY CITIZENS.
UM, AND THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE.
WE LIKE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, IT'S GONNA, IT TAKES ALL OF US IN AN EFFORT IN, IN ORDER FOR US TO SEE A LITTER FREE CITY AND KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS CLEAN.
SO IF, IF ANY ONE OF YOU ALL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO, UH, ORGANIZE OR, OR GET ASSISTANCE WITH THE COMMUNITY OR NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP, PLEASE CONTACT US AT, AT THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE, AND MY CONTACT INFORMATION WILL BE AT THE END OF THIS PRESENTATION.
WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENT, WE ALSO FACILITATE THE COMMUNITY HAND TOOL PROGRAM.
THIS PROGRAM IS FREE, UH, TO ALL RESIDENTS WHO LIVE WITHIN THE CITY OF DALLAS.
THIS PROGRAM ALSO SUPPORTS OUR VOLUNTEER CLEANUPS BY PROVIDING TRASH BAGS, GLOVES, RAKES, UH, LITTER GRABBERS.
WE HAVE LAWNMOWERS, WE HAVE WEEDED EATERS, ALL PROVIDED FREE TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS WHO WANT TO PERFORM A COMMUNITY CLEANUP OR A BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT WITHIN THE CITY.
AND HERE, THIS IS JUST A, A NUMBER OF AVAILABLE TOOLS AND RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE, AGAIN, WITHIN THE COMMUNITY TOOL, UH, PROGRAM HAND TO THE PROGRAM.
UH, AGAIN, LAWNMOWERS, WEEDED EATERS, HAND POLE, PRUNERS, HEDGE TRIMMERS, HEDGE CLIPPERS, HAND FALLS, RAKES, BROOM SHOVELS.
UM, WE EVEN PROVIDE THE GAS FOR, FOR THE BATTERY, I MEAN FOR THE GAS POWERED EQUIPMENT, AS WELL AS TRASH BAGS AND GLOVES TO ACCESS THE TOOLS OUT OF THE COMMUNITY HAND TOOL, UH, PROGRAM.
UM, A GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL MUST SIGN A TOOL LOAN AGREEMENT, SIGN A RELEASE OF LIABILITY, UM, AND WE ASK THAT THEY SHARE THEIR COMMUNITY, UH, CLEAN UP DATA BACK WITH US SO WE CAN, UH, DO PROPER TRACKING OF HOW THE TOOLS AND WHERE THE TOOLS ARE BEING UTILIZED.
AND ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST ATTEND A MANDATORY EQUIPMENT TRAINING, UH, WHEN PICKING UP THE TOOLS OR IF WE ARE DELIVERING THE TOOLS ON SITE AT A VOLUNTEER CLEANUP EVENT.
SO THIS IS JUST A SNAPSHOT OF OUR COMMUNITY, UH, CLEANUP ON THE GO PROGRAM.
THIS IS A TRAILER THAT WE CAN DEPLOY OUT ON SITE, UH, TO A GROUP OR TO AN ORGANIZATION WHO IS PERFORMING A COMMUNITY CLEANUP.
THE UNIQUENESS OF THIS TRAILER IS THAT THIS TRAILER IS ALSO OUTFITTED WITH BATTERY POWERED TOOLS IN LIEU OF GAS POWERED TOOLS AS WELL.
SO WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO BRING OUT BATTERY POWERED OR GAS POWERED TOOLS TO GET THE JOB DONE.
ONE OF OUR PREMIER PROGRAMS IS OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN TRASH OFF OUR COMMUNITY, CLEAN TRASH OFF PROGRAM.
SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH THIS PROGRAM.
SO ON A MONTHLY BASIS, WE HAVE WHAT IS CALLED THE COMMUNITY CLEAN TRASH OFF.
THIS PROGRAM GIVES RESIDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME DISCARD OF HAZARDOUS WASTE.
SO YOU MAY HAVE KNOWN OF IT AS BOPA BATTERY OIL PAINT AND ANTIFREEZE, RECEIVE DOCUMENT SHREDDING AND ALSO TO RELIEVE, UH, RESIDENTS OF ADDITIONAL BULK TRASH.
UH, THAT MAY BE OVER THE LIMIT OF THE SANITATION SET OUT GUIDELINES.
UH, TYPICALLY WE'LL PERFORM THESE TRASH OFFS AT SCHOOLS, UH, RECREATION CENTERS OR COMMUNITY PARKS.
UH, YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND A SCHEDULE ON OUR WEBSITE, BUT WE ALSO PARTNER WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF SANITATION AND THEY, UH, ANNOUNCE IT THROUGH THEIR TWITTER,
[00:55:01]
UH, FEED AND SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS.OR IF YOU NEED A CALENDAR OR WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE NEXT, JUST PLEASE GIVE US A CALL AND WE'LL LET YOU KNOW.
IN TERMS OF HOW THIS PROGRAM IS PERFORMING, UH, YOU CAN SEE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEARS THE DATA, UH, IT'S COLLECTED OF HOW MANY EDUCATION LETTERS THAT WE MAIL OUT TO RESIDENTS.
SO IF YOU ARE LIVING NEAR OR AROUND A CENSUS TRACK WHERE TRASH OFF IS GOING TO BE HELD, WE PLACE LETTERS IN THE MAIL TO ENSURE THAT THE AREAS THAT ARE MOST IMPACTED RECEIVE THAT INFORMATION VIA MAIL.
SO YOU CAN SEE RESPECTFULLY OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS HOW WE'RE DOING AND PARTICIPATION, HOW WE'RE DOING, AND REACHING OUT THROUGH EDUCATION DISSEMINATION AND HOW WE ARE DOING WITH ADDITIONAL BULK TRASH AND TIRES AND HAZARDOUS WASTE, UH, ELEMENTS THAT WE'RE COLLECTING THROUGHOUT THE CITY THROUGH THIS PROGRAM.
AND I THINK IF YOU JUST SCROLL DOWN JUST A BIT, YOU'LL SEE KIND OF WHERE WE ARE IN 20, UH, 23.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'VE, WE'VE, UH, EXCEEDED IN SOME AREAS WITH THE COLLECTION OF TIRES OR HAZARDOUS WASTE MATERIALS, AS WELL AS RESIDENT PARTICIPATION.
SO WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THIS PROGRAM, UH, WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE.
BUT MOST OF ALL, THIS PROGRAM IS A HUGE BENEFIT, UH, TO THE CITY OF DALLAS RESIDENTS.
SO JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM, UH, THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE.
UH, WE ACQUIRED THE KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM AS AN AFFILIATE WITH KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL AND KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL.
UM, THIS ACQUISITION HAPPENED AROUND 2018, WAS WHEN THE CONVERSATION STARTED.
USED TO BE FACILITATED BY A SMALL NONPROFIT, UH, HERE IN THE CITY OF DALLAS.
UH, AFTER CONVERSATIONS AND PARTNERING WITH THE ENTITY, THEY FELT THAT THE CITY OF DALLAS ITSELF HAD A MUCH GREATER CAPACITY TO, TO, TO TAKE THE PROGRAM, UH, TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
SO WE HAD SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH THE, UH, NATIONAL AFFILIATE KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL, AND THE STATEWIDE AFFILIATE KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL TO SEE WHAT THAT TRANSITION WOULD LOOK LIKE WITH THE CITY OF DALLAS ACQUIRING THAT PROGRAM INTO THE DEPARTMENT OF CODE COMPLIANCE, UM, OPERATION.
SO THIS JUST GIVES US A, A TIMELINE OF, OF HOW, HOW THAT TRANSITION, UH, TOOK PLACE.
A KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM OR KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM OR ANY KEEP AUSTIN BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM, UH, IS REQUIRED FOR, UH, THE FOCUS IS ON LITTER, BEAUTIFICATION, AND RECYCLING.
SO WE, WE ALL, WE HAD THOSE THREE COMPONENTS OF PROGRAMMING THAT WE WERE ALREADY DOING WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENT, OR AS WE WERE PARTNERING WITH OTHER, UH, INTERDEPARTMENTAL, UH, DEPARTMENTS TO, TO FACILITATE THIS.
SO IT MADE SENSE FOR US TO GO AHEAD AND TO MAKE THIS ACQUISITION.
WE MADE THE INQUIRY IN 2019, UH, IN 2020, OUR DIRECTOR AT THAT TIME, MR. CARL SIMPSON, WE ALL MET WITH KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL AND THE REGIONAL PROGRAM DIRECTORSHIP WITH THEM.
AND THEY ESSENTIALLY GAVE US THE GREEN LIGHT TO GO AHEAD AND TO ACCEPT, UH, THE KEEP DALLAS BEAUTIFUL BRAND UP UNDER THE CITY OF DALLAS, UH, CODE COMPLIANCE PROGRAM.
AND MOST RECENTLY THIS YEAR, UM, WE RECEIVED SILVER STAR STATUS, UH, THROUGH KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING THROUGHOUT THE CITY UP UNDER THIS UMBRELLA.
SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT AND HOW WE ACCOMPLISHED IT WITHIN TWO YEARS.
SO OUR NEXT ACCOMPLISHMENT IS REACHING GOLD STATUS, AND WE'RE WORKING ON THAT RIGHT NOW.
OUR, OUR TEAM AND STAFF AND OUR DIRECTOR IS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THE EFFORTS THAT WE'RE DOING, AND WE WANNA BRING EVERYBODY ALONG FOR THIS, THIS AWESOME JOURNEY NEXT CLIENT.
SO, SO THIS IS HOW I CAN BE REACHED WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT.
UM, AND MY NUMBER IS SHOWN BELOW AT 2 1 4 6 7 1 9 6 0 6 OR BY EMAIL AT KEVIN DOT MONDAY@DALLAS.GOV.
WE ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO WORK WITH YOU, UM, IN ANY CAPACITY.
AS I STATED EARLIER, WE ARE OUT AT REC CENTERS AND SENIOR PROGRAMS WITH STAFF BEING FRONT FACING, ANSWERING QUESTIONS OR CODE COMPLIANCE RELATED, UM, PROGRAMS THAT WE, WE MAY HAVE IN-HOUSE OR TO LEARN BETTER HOW WE CAN BETTER WORK WITH, UH, ANY POPULATION, UH, WITHIN THE CITY OF DALLAS AS IT RELATES TO, TO OUR PROGRAM OPERATIONS.
AND AT THIS TIME, I'LL TAKE ANY QUESTIONS.
[01:00:02]
I'VE GOT A QUICK QUESTION IS, AS IT GETS TO THE SENIOR POPULATION ARE, WHAT, WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR TOTAL VOLUNTEERS FOR THESE PROGRAMS ARE, ARE SENIORS? SO CURRENTLY WE, WE DON'T TRACK, UM, VOLUNTEERISM BY AGE.UM, BUT THAT'S SOMETHING WE CAN DEFINITELY, UH, TAKE A LOOK AT.
I WILL TELL YOU, UH, WE DO RECEIVE, UH, A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS THROUGH OUR RESIDENT, OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION, UH, THAT ARE SENIORS WHO ARE OUT PERFORMING, UH, COMMUNITY CLEANUPS, AND WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THAT.
UH, I CAN THINK OF SEVERAL NEIGHBORHOODS OR NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS THAT WE WORK WITH THAT HAVE A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF SENIORS, UH, PARTICIPATING IN THOSE VOLUNTEER CLEANUPS.
AND ONE OTHER QUESTION THEN WE'LL SEE IF ANYBODY ELSE HAS ANYTHING.
UH, IF, IF A SENIOR LIVING IN ANY PART OF TOWN THINKS THERE'S A PROBLEM IN THEIR, IN THEIR COMMUNITY OR THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD, HOW DO THEY, HOW DO THEY GO ABOUT FINDING OUT ABOUT YOU AND, AND ACTUALLY GETTING SOMETHING ORGANIZED TO DEAL WITH THAT ISSUE? YEAH, SO IF IT, IF IT'S RELATED TO A COMMUNITY CLEANUP OR THEY WANT TO ORGANIZE AN EFFORT, THEY CAN JUST CALL ME DIRECT, UH, AT THE NUMBER THAT'S LISTED, UH, THAT I LISTED ON THE SLIDE.
HOWEVER, IF IT'S A, IF IT'S A CODE VIOLATION OR SOMETHING THEY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT'S, UM, IN THEIR AREA, WE WANNA MAKE SURE THEIR FIRST PLUGGED IN WITH THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD CODE DISTRICT.
SO WE WOULD MAKE SURE THAT WE GET THEM CONNECTED TO THAT, UH, NEIGHBORHOOD CODE MANAGER AND EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD CODE DISTRICT HAS WHAT IS CALLED A NEIGHBORHOOD CODE REPRESENTATIVE THAT ALSO, UH, GOES OUT AND EDUCATES RESIDENTS AND ATTEND, UH, MEETINGS GOING ON IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD, OUR COMMUNITY.
SO HOW MANY OF THOSE REPRESENTATIVES ARE THERE? SO EACH CODE DISTRICT HAS A, UH, NEIGHBORHOOD CODE REP, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU'RE LIVING IN THE CITY.
SO WE HAVE OUR CENTRAL CODE DISTRICT, OUR SOUTH CENTRAL CODE DISTRICT, OUR SOUTHWEST CODE DISTRICT, OUR NORTHWEST CODE DISTRICT, OUR SOUTHEAST CODE DISTRICT, AND OUR NORTHEAST CODE DISTRICT.
SO WE HAVE A TOTAL OF EIGHT, AND WE ALSO HAVE OUR NUISANCE ABATEMENT DIVISION AS WELL.
WE HAVE, WHAT, WHAT'S THE NEW ONE? NUISANCE NUISANCE, NUISANCE NUISANCE ABATEMENT DIVISION.
SO OUR NUISANCE ABATEMENT DIVISION WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GOING OUT AND DOING WHAT WE CALL SOME OF OUR HEAVY LIFTING.
SO THEY ARE CLEANING UP ILLEGAL DUMP SITES, THEY ARE DOING ABATEMENTS OF, OF PROPERTIES.
THEY, WE ALSO MOW AND CLEAN, UM, UH, VACANT LOTS.
SO THEY, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF OUR HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY AS IT RELATES TO OUR DEPARTMENT.
COULD YOU SHARE WITH MAC, KYLE, UH, LIKE A MAP OF WHAT THOSE DISTRICTS LOOK LIKE AND WHO, WHO, WHO THE, THE REPRESENTATIVE IS AND HOW TO CONTACT THEM? YES.
SO WE CAN ACTUALLY, IF I'M NOT SURE WHO'S CONTROLLING WE WANT, WE CAN GO TO OUR, UH, WEBSITE.
WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION LISTED ON THAT WEBSITE, BUT I CAN ALSO EMAIL THAT BACK OUT TO, UH, THE LIAISON HERE TO ENSURE THAT EVERYONE ON THE CALL GETS A COPY OF OUR, OUR DISTRICT SERVICE MAPS.
ANY, ANYBODY ELSE HAVE QUESTIONS? UM, THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO LOOK INTO, UH, AND I DON'T KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS, WITH CODE COMPLIANCE AND CODE VIOLATIONS AND THE USE OF CODE WITH SENIORS AND I'M, I'M FINDING WE, THERE'S, LIKE YOU SAID, THERE'S NO DATA AND I REALIZED WHEN I GOT A CITATION ABOUT THE WICKER CHAIR ON MY FRONT PORCH, NOBODY ASKED MY AGE, THANK GOODNESS.
BUT, UM, YOU, DO YOU KNOW OF ANY PLACE IN, IN THE DEPARTMENT WHERE THERE IS THAT KIND OF DATA ABOUT SENIORS AND CODE VIOLATIONS OR CODE COMPLIANCE ISSUES? NOT RIGHT OFF.
I DON'T, BUT IF YOU, IF YOU GIVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY, LET ME RESEARCH THAT INFORMATION.
UM, TYPICALLY, YOU KNOW, WE, WE DON'T KNOW THE AGE OF A PERSON WHO'S LIVING IN THE HOUSE IF, UM, IF THERE IS A VIOLATION.
UM, SO, BUT LET ME RESEARCH THAT INFORMATION TO SEE IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO EVEN GATHER THAT TYPE OF INFORMATION.
THEN ALSO, YOU DON'T WORK WITH COMMUNITY COURTS THAT THOSE ARE BASICALLY FOCUSED ON INDIVIDUALS, WHEREAS YOURS IS ON COMMUNITY VIOLATIONS.
IS THAT CORRECT? SO WE DO WORK, WE DO COLLABORATE WITH COMMUNITY COURTS, UH, IN A NUMBER OF WAYS.
[01:05:01]
UH, COMMUNITY COURTS FOR VOLUNTEER, UH, CLEANUP PROJECT TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY NEED, UH, COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS.SO WE DO WORK WITH THEM IN THAT CAPACITY, UH, AS WELL AS DOING EDUCATION EFFORTS, UH, IN THE COMMUNITY COURTS COURT.
WELL THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR BEING HERE.
ANYTHING ELSE? THOUGHT I GOT A HANDOUT? YEAH, ONE HANDOUT.
I JUST WANTED TO SAY OVER IN DISTRICT NINE, MY NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION HAS WORKED WITH Y'ALL FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP PROGRAM AND THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE THAT GO OUT WITH US THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD TWO TIMES A YEAR ARE,
