OF THE MEETING.

UH, IT

[Municipal Library Board Meeting on September 26, 2023.]

IS FOUR OH TWO AND WE WILL CALL THIS MEETING TO ORDER.

THINK TRISTAN IS COMING.

OH, NO, SHE'S ONLINE.

SHE WAS GONNA COME IN.

OKAY.

ALRIGHT THEN.

UM, PUBLIC SPEAKER.

I GUESS WE DON'T HAVE ONE TODAY.

I THOUGHT WE MIGHT GET ONE.

I, UM, SPOKE WITH A GENTLEMAN WHO MAY BE JOINING THE BOARD FOR DISTRICT 11.

WE JUST DID A LITTLE ORIENTATION.

INVITED HIM TO JOIN US TODAY.

SEE WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT, BUT I DON'T SEE IT.

OKAY.

.

OKAY, THEN WE WILL MOVE RIGHT OUT TO THE APPROVAL MINUTES.

THANK YOU.

UM, MINUTES WERE SENT OUT.

ARE THERE ANY, UH, APPLICATIONS, CORRECTIONS TO THE MINUTES? THE, THE MINUTES WILL BE FROM AUGUST THE 29TH.

2023.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? ? I THINK.

ANY CORRECTION? NO MOVE APPROVAL.

ALRIGHT.

IT'S BEEN MOVED AND I GUESS SECONDED.

DID I HEAR SOMEBODY SAY IT? NO, THAT WAS AT HATTIE.

THAT MOVED SECOND AND SECOND.

UH, FOR THE APPROVAL OF OUR MINUTES FOR AUGUST 29TH, 2023, ARE THERE ANY OPPOSITIONS FOR THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES? THERE ARE NO OPPOSITIONS.

THEN THE MOVE, UH, THE MINUTES WILL BE APPROVED FOR APRIL 29TH.

2023.

WE WILL MOVE INTO THE REPORTS OF OFFICER BOARDS AND STANDING COMMITTEE.

UM, I DON'T HAVE A REPORT, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO ASK, UM, THE DIRECTOR, WHERE ARE WE OR HOW ARE WE GOING TO MEET FOR OUR BOARDS? UM, WHAT TYPE OF DISCUSSION WILL WE BRING TO THE FLOOR FOR, FOR OUR BOARDS OR OUR COMMITTEE? UM, WE DON'T HAVE, WE DON'T HAVE ANY COMMITTEES, SO ANYTHING GOES, ANY NEW BUSINESS THINGS LIKE THAT THEY CAN JUST BRING IN.

RIGHT.

OKAY.

GREAT.

ALRIGHT THEN.

SO, UM, TALKING ABOUT THERE WAS, WELL I DO HAVE ONE THING TO BRING UP.

I WANTED TO BRING UP, UH, THE FACT THAT YOU ALL NEED TO KNOW THAT OUR DIRECTOR DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB WITH PRESENTING TO THE, UH, BOND FOR THE, UH, CRITICAL FACILITIES.

AND SHE SPOKE ON OUR LIBRARY AND, UM, UH, WANNA MAKE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THAT.

'CAUSE SHE DID A GREAT JOB.

WELL, THANK YOU.

I APPRECIATE THAT.

WE'RE, WE'RE GONNA, I'M GONNA HAVE SOME UPDATES ON THAT IN MY, MY REPORT SO WE CAN COVER IT THEN.

OKAY.

SO I DID WANNA GIVE YOU KUDOS FOR THAT.

THANK YOU.

BECAUSE YOU DID A GREAT JOB.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, EVERYBODY THERE WHO PRESENTED DID A GREAT JOB.

UM, WE'RE GONNA MOVE ON INTO THE STAFF RECORD.

ALL RIGHT.

TO JOINING US TODAY, UM, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, UM, OUR PROCESS.

UM, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT BAND BOOKS WEEK, WHICH IS THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER.

UM, WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT WHAT WE'RE PLANNING TO DO AS WELL AS OUR REVIEW PROCESS FOR BAND BOOKS.

AND JOINING US ON THE SCREEN ARE MELISSA D KRISTEN CALVERT, AND JESSE.

SO ROYAL, AND THEY CAN TELL YOU, TELL YOU MORE ABOUT, SO MELISSA IS COMMUNICATIONS, KRISTEN IS PROGRAMMING, AND JESS ME IS OUR ACQUISITIONS TEAM LEADER.

SO TAKE IT AWAY LADIES.

WHO HEARS FIRST? ? WHOS FIRST, WHO'S GOT THE POWERPOINT? WHO'S TALKING? WELL, , UM, WELL JUST ME.

YOU PROBABLY HAVE, UH, THE MOST NEW INFORMATION.

UM, SO KRISTA AND I CAN SUM UP WHAT WE ARE DOING FOR BAND BOOKS WEEK.

UM, SO I THINK FIRST OF ALL, IT'S PROBABLY WORTH MENTIONING THAT AT DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY WE DON'T SEE THE, UM, THE BOOK CHALLENGES THAT YOU HEAR ABOUT IN THE NEWS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE.

UM, AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY, UM, FOR, FORTUNATELY FOR US.

UM, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT, UM, THE GENERAL CLIMATE DOESN'T MAKE ALL OF US LIBRARIANS FEEL A LITTLE, A LITTLE NERVOUS.

UM, AND, YOU KNOW, WE DO FEEL, FEEL SOME OF THE PRESSURE THAT OTHER LIBRARIES ARE FACING.

SO, UH, FOR, UM, IN TIME WITH BAND BOOKS WEEK, WE DECIDED THIS WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA TO, UH, YOU KNOW, KIND OF REAFFIRM OUR

[00:05:01]

SUPPORT OF THE, THE FREEDOM TO READ AND, UM, AND OUR DEFENSE OF, UH, EVERYONE'S RIGHT TO READ WHAT THEY WANNA READ.

SO WE WILL HAVE A FREEDOM TO READ STATEMENT THAT WILL GO UP ON OUR WEBSITE NEXT WEEK.

UM, AND WE WILL SHARE IT OUT THROUGH, UH, SOCIAL MEDIA AND, UM, EMAIL, UH, NEXT WEEK AS WELL.

UM, WE DO, OR AT LEAST I EXPECT THAT WE'LL PROBABLY GET SOME ATTENTION FROM THE MEDIA, NOT BECAUSE OF THAT STATEMENT NECESSARILY, BUT THAT PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, REPORTERS LOOKING TO DO A STORY WILL REACH OUT TO US AS THE LOCAL LIBRARY, UM, AND ASK US ABOUT BAND BOOKS.

UM, AND A LOT OF TIMES IT'S BECAUSE THEY ASSUME THAT WE ARE GETTING THE CHALLENGES THAT OTHER LIBRARIES ARE GETTING.

UM, SO WE ARE, UM, WE ARE PREPARED FOR THAT.

UM, BUT THEN BESIDES THAT, UM, A LOT OF, UM, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO, UH, KRISTEN TO TALK ABOUT WHAT KIND OF PROGRAMMING THAT WE I HAVE PLANNED FOR NEXT WEEK.

I THINK YOU ON MUTE, YOU'RE MUTED.

STILL MUTED.

I THINK YOU'RE STILL MUTED.

OKAY, GOOD.

SO ONE THING THAT WE ARE DOING, UM, IS OUR BIG READ DOWN IS HAPPENING NEXT MONTH.

THAT IS THE, UM, YOU KNOW, THAT IS THE FEE FORGIVENESS PERIOD THAT WE DO EVERY, UH, YOU KNOW, TWICE A YEAR.

AND THERE IS AN ACTIVITY AS PART OF THE BIG READ DOWN, UH, TO READ BAND BOOKS.

SO PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO READ OFF THEIR, READ OFF THEIR FEES, UM, CAN DO SO BY READING BAND BOOKS.

UM, AND YEAH, I DON'T EVEN SEE KRISTEN .

I TOLD HER TO COME IN.

THAT'S WHY THE TECHNOLOGY, YOU'RE JUST ACROSS THE HALL WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS.

GET UP .

WHAT A CRAZY IDEA.

WHAT A CRAZY IDEA.

COME ON IN.

YOU CAN MOVE YOUR POCKET, BUT YOU CAN SIT RIGHT THERE THEN EVERYBODY CAN SEE YOU.

EVERYBODY.

THIS IS KRISTEN.

LIVE IN PERSON.

WORKS IN HERE.

OKAY, WELL, UM, TALK TO YOU GUYS ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING THAT WE HAVE COMING UP.

FIRST OF ALL, NOT REALLY PROGRAM, BUT WE DID ASK ALL OF OUR LIBRARY LOCATIONS TO DO DISPLAYS IN RELATION TO BAND BOOK SUITE.

SO EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE SOME KIND OF CREATIVE AND LIKE TAILORED TO THEIR LOCATION DISPLAY THAT TALKS ABOUT BOOKS THAT HAVE BEEN BANNED IN THE PAST AND THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING THAT FREEDOM TO READ.

AND THEN WE DID TRY TO PLAN PROGRAMS LIKE AT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS ALL OVER THE LIBRARY SYSTEM SO THEY'RE JUST NOT IN ONE AREA OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

UM, MY PARK LOCATION IS HAVING A SCAVENGER HUNT, SO THEY'LL BE ABLE TO LEARN ABOUT BIG BAND BOOKS AND PICK UP CLUES AND, AND GO THROUGH THE LIBRARY THAT WAY, WHICH IS A REALLY FUN WAY FOR PEOPLE TO ENGAGE.

AND IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE PASSIVE SO PEOPLE CAN COME DO IT AT ANY TIME DURING BAND BOOKS WEEK.

AND THEN WE'RE DOING A COUPLE THINGS AT, UM, AT BOOKS, UM, AT COFFEE SHOPS AS WELL AS IN LIBRARIES BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO AT THOSE DIFFERENT HOURS OUTSIDE OF LIKE SOME OF OUR NORMAL LIBRARY HOURS, GET A GOOD AUDIENCE THAT WAY AND PARTNER.

AND ONE OF THOSE IS HAPPENING AT THE SPIN IN NORTH DALLAS AND THEY'RE GONNA HAVE A TALK ABOUT FAN BOOKS AS WELL AS DOING, THEY DO A SILENT BOOK CLUB, SO EVERYBODY, SO EVERYBODY READS AND THEN THEY SOCIALIZE .

SO, UM, PEOPLE REALLY LIKE THAT WHOLE, THEY DO WHOLE THING, LIKE FOR INTROVERT, I GUESS CLUB, DEFINITELY SCHOOL.

AND THEN THEY TALK ABOUT THE BOOKS WITH EACH OTHER AND THEN THEY, UM, AND THEY JUST SPECIALIZED A LITTLE, YOU KNOW, AS MUCH WHAT THEY WANT.

SO, BUT THEY'RE GONNA HAVE AN ACTUAL, I THINK THE BOOKSTORE OWNER IS GIVING A LITTLE BIT OF TALK TOO, WHICH IT WILL BE A GOOD TIE IN AS WELL.

AT HAMPTON, ILLINOIS, THEY'RE DOING HARRY POTTER TRIVIA BECAUSE LAST YEAR THEY JUST DID VAN BOOK TRIVIA AND IT WASN'T AS POPULAR AS HARRY POTTER SPECIFIC, WHICH IS, UM, MOST OF THOSE BOOKS, IF NOT ALL OF 'EM, HAVE BEEN BANNED BY, I'M SURE THEY CALLED THEM THERE, BUT SOMEWHERE.

YES.

YEAH.

AND, UH, PERRY CREEK IS DOING A BAND BOOK ESCAPE ROOM, SO YOU HAVE TO SOLVE THE CLUES ABOUT HANDBOOKS TO ESCAPE FROM THE ROOM.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE, AT WILD DETECTIVES, WE'RE DOING BAND BOOK TRIVIA, WHICH WE DID LAST YEAR TOO, AND WAS EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL.

SO REALLY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO, TO HAVE THAT CELEBRATION AGAIN.

AND THEN

[00:10:01]

SOME BLACKOUT POETRY THAT'S RELATED.

UH, SOME OTHER BAND BOOK TRIVIA TYPE EVENTS.

DAN BOOK TILE POSTERS.

SO YOU REALLY CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT SURROUNDED BY THE BAND BOOK DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

MY FAVORITE THING THAT WE'RE DOING THOUGH IS, UM, THE GENEALOGY AND HISTORY DIVISION RECENTLY GOT WITH IT A MEMORY STATION.

AND THIS IS SOMETHING WHERE TRADITIONALLY YOU BRING A PHOTOGRAPH IN AND THE PHO, OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE A OH PHOTOGRAPH LIKE YOUR, YOU KNOW, YOUR PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS OR SOMETHING.

IT MAKES YOU THINK OF A MEMORY AND YOU SHARE THE MEMORY.

AND WHEN YOU, IF WAS A STATION, WHEN YOU PUT YOUR PHOTO UNDER THE SCANNER, IT SCANS A PICTURE AND IT ALSO RECORDS YOU TALKING ABOUT THE MEMORY AND THEN IT LIKE WRITES IT OUT, IT TRANSCRIBES IT FOR YOU.

SO WE WERE TRYING TO THINK OF OTHER WAYS TO INCORPORATE THIS INTO WHAT WE'RE DOING.

AND WE DECIDED TO MAKE IT A PART OF OUR BAND BOOKS PROGRAMMING TOO.

BECAUSE WHEN JOE AND I WERE AT, UH, AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE THIS YEAR, THEY HAD THIS GIANT CHAIR THAT YOU COULD FIT IN AND YOU GOT TO PICK A BAND BOOK AND YOU SAT AND READ FROM THE BAND BOOK.

AND I REMEMBER LOOKING THROUGH THE BOOKS AND TRYING TO DECIDE WHICH ONE I WANTED TO READ FROM.

'CAUSE THEY ALL KIND OF GIVE YOU DIFFERENT MEMORY IF YOU THINK ABOUT DIFFERENT THINGS WHEN YOU, YOU KNOW, DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU READ THEM OR WHO YOU READ THEM WITH.

SO WE'RE GONNA DO THAT AS A OF OUR PROGRAMS FOR NEXT WEEK, WHERE YOU CAN PICK OUT A BOOK AND IT'LL THIS SCAN A PICTURE OF THE BOOK AND ALSO YOU CAN SHARE YOUR MEMORY ABOUT IT.

AND I'LL TIE IN THAT WAY.

THAT'S ANOTHER WAY TO SHARE AND GET INVOLVED AND USE SOME OF OUR REALLY COOL.

THAT'S WHAT I GOT.

ALRIGHT.

SHARE ME.

OKAY.

WELL, UH, THANK YOU.

I'M, THAT ALL SOUNDS REALLY EXCITING.

UM, UH, TO FOLLOW UP WITH WHAT MELISSA SAID, WE ACTUALLY DON'T RECEIVE AN ABUNDANCE OF, UM, REQUEST FOR CONSIDERATION.

AND I BELIEVE PART OF THAT IS BECAUSE WE HAVE SOME VERY GOOD POLICIES, UM, WHICH YOU CAN FIND ON THE WEBSITE, UM, UNDER THE, ABOUT US, UM, THAT SERVE TO, UM, INFORM CUSTOMERS OF WHAT IT IS OUR, OUR POLICIES, OUR GOALS, UM, WHAT WE DO AND DO NOT HAVE IN THE COLLECTION.

AND, UM, I THINK IT STAVES OFF A LOT OF, UM, THINGS, YOU KNOW, UM, FOR INSTANCE THE, UH, REQUEST FOR CONSIDERATION POLICY.

UM, IT REQUIRES YOU TO BE A DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY RESIDENT CARD HOLDER THAT, UM, YOU KNOW, DISCOURAGES SOME OF THE, YOU KNOW, OUTSIDE ACTIVISM THAT WE SEE, YOU KNOW, YOU HEAR ABOUT IN OTHER PLACES WHERE PEOPLE WHO AREN'T PART OF THE COMMUNITY COME IN AND TRY TO, YOU KNOW, IMPOSE THEIR MORALS ON A COMMUNITY, UM, THE FORM THAT THEY HAVE TO FILL OUT.

UM, ASK QUESTIONS LIKE, HAVE YOU READ THIS? UM, READ REDDER WATCHED THIS, UH, MATERIAL IN ITS ENTIRETY AND IT ASKS YOU TO, YOU KNOW, GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF, UM, PAGES AND, UM, CHAPTERS THAT ARE PROBLEMATIC AND GIVE A REALLY GOOD EXPLANATION.

IT ALSO, UM, OF WHAT IT IS THAT YOU FIND OFFENSIVE ABOUT, UM, A CHALLENGED MATERIAL.

IT ALSO, UM, ENCOURAGES YOU ASK, IS THERE ANYTHING GOOD? IS THERE ANYTHING REDEEMING ABOUT THIS MATERIAL? AND SO I THINK ALL OF THAT KIND OF, YOU, IT MAKES PEOPLE SIT BACK AND THINK AND IT KIND OF, UM, DISCOURAGES FRIVOLOUS, UM, REQUESTS.

HOWEVER, SOMETIMES THEY STILL, YOU KNOW, WE GET THEM AND, UM, WE HAVE A, UM, PROCESS IN PLACE.

UM, IF WE GET A REQUEST, THEY FILL OUT THE, UM, FORM.

AND THEN, UH, KIRSTEN, UM, USUALLY CONTACTS ME.

I SET UP A COMMITTEE OF A COUPLE OF, UM, YOU KNOW, THREE TO FIVE LIBRARIANS.

WE ALL READ OR WATCH THE MATERIAL.

UM, AND THEN WE, YOU KNOW, COMPARE IT TO OUR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY AND WE MAKE A RECOMMENDATION.

AND THE BACKBONE FOR ALL OF THAT IS OUR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY.

UM, WHICH IS A LONG DOCUMENT THAT, UM, EXPLAINS, YOU KNOW, UM, THE PRINCIPLES THAT WE FOLLOW LIKE THE A L A FREEDOM TO READ, FREEDOM TO VIEW.

UM, THERE'S, UM, POLICIES ABOUT NOT PREJUDICE, PALLY LABELING MATERIAL.

UM, IT MAKES CLEAR THAT, YOU KNOW, UM, IT IS A PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MONITOR AND, YOU KNOW, IF THEY CHOOSE, UM, WHAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE READING, IT'S NOT THE LIBRARY'S RESPONSIBILITY TO, UH, REMOVE ITEMS FROM THE COLLECTION BECAUSE YOUR CHILD MIGHT READ THEM.

UM, THE COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY ALSO MAKES IT CLEAR THAT WE CAN'T ADD EVERYTHING, BUT THAT WE DO, UM, TRY TO GET AS DIVERSE VIEWPOINTS.

AND THERE ARE ALSO, UM, ESCAPE VALVES AS I CALL 'EM, UM, LIKE THE, UH, CUSTOMER, UH, RECOMMENDATION PROGRAM WHERE, UM, IF IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S AVAILABLE AND IT DOESN'T OUTRIGHT VIOLATE OUR

[00:15:01]

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY, IF SOMEBODY ASKS FOR IT, WE'RE WILLING TO BUY A COPY AND YOU GET THEIR POINT OF VIEW INTO THE LIBRARY.

SO IT'S EASIER TO GET SOMETHING IN THAN I THINK IT IS TO GET OUT.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, UM, OUR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLI POLICY SETS, UM, GUIDELINES FOR GETTING RID OF OUTDATED AND UM, UM, UNTRUE , UM, MATERIAL, UM, THINGS THAT ARE NO LONGER RELEVANT.

IT ALSO PLACES A LOT OF DEMAND, UH, A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON CUSTOMER DEMAND AND, UM, POPULARITY AND REVIEWS SO THAT WE'RE NOT HOLDING ON.

WE CAN'T KEEP EVERYTHING, WE'RE NOT HOLDING ONTO STUFF THAT NOBODY WANTS TO READ .

AND SO I THINK, YOU KNOW, THOSE POLICIES, YOU KNOW, IN GENERAL JUST REALLY HELP US, YOU KNOW, UM, SET THE TONE AND, UM, EXPECTATIONS FOR WHAT WE WILL AND WILL NOT ADD AND WILL NOT TAKE OUT OF THE, UH, COLLECTION .

ALRIGHT, ANY QUESTIONS FOR I HAVE QUESTION OR TEAMS? GO AHEAD, STAN.

WHAT, WHAT SORT OF MATERIAL MIGHT VIOLATE THE, UH, THE, THE POLICY, THE LIBRARY'S, UH, COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY? JASMINE, HAVE YOU GOTTEN ANYTHING THAT ACTUALLY VIOLATES OUR POLICY THAT WE'VE REMOVED? I THINK WE, THE LAST ONE I REMEMBER, AND YOU MIGHT REMEMBER MORE, BUT THE LAST TIME THAT WE REVIEWED SOMETHING, IT WAS A D V D WAS A NON-RATED D V D MM-HMM.

, UM, THAT WAS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION.

WE DON'T NON-RATED MATERIALS.

THIS ONE SLIPPED THROUGH AND SOMEONE BROUGHT IT TO OUR ATTENTION AND WHEN I LOOKED AT IT, I WAS LIKE, MM-HMM.

, NO, WE SHOULDN'T BE CIRCULATING THAT ITEM.

I WAS LIKE, I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO UNSEE WHAT I JUST SAW .

UM, SO THAT ONE WAS CLEARLY A MISTAKE, RIGHT? IT IT HOWEVER IT GOT THROUGH, UM, THE PURCHASE AND, UM, SO WE REMOVED IT FROM THE COLLECTION.

THERE WAS ONLY ONE, BUT I WILL TELL YOU THAT THING CHECKED OUT LIKE 40 TIMES BEFORE OUR ATTENTION COPIES.

NO, I WAS LIKE, THAT ONE TOOK A WHILE TO COME UP.

AS FAR AS BOOKS.

HAVE YOU? YEAH, I HAVEN'T HAD AN EXPERIENCE.

JESS, I'LL LET YOU ANSWER.

NO.

UM, PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY THINGS THAT OUTRIGHT VIOLATE THE COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY ARE THINGS LIKE, UM, POPUP BOOKS, YOU KNOW, THAT WON'T WITHSTAND CIRCULATION AND, UM, YOU KNOW, EXTREMELY OUTDATED.

YOU KNOW, LIKE I WOULD, I WOULDN'T, I WOULD, I WOULD NOT, I WOULD NOT KEEP A UKRAINIAN TRAVEL BOOK FROM 2017 IF SOMEBODY WERE TO MAKE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THAT, WHICH THEY HAVEN'T .

BUT THOSE ARE THE TYPES OF THINGS THAT WOULD ACTUALLY VIOLATE OUR POLICY.

UM, YEAH.

YEAH, SOMETIMES THERE'S NOT A VERY GOOD ARGUMENT TO KEEP SOMETHING IN THE COLLECTION, BUT THERE'S RARELY A COMPELLING REASON TO REMOVE IT FROM THE COLLECTION UNLESS IT IS JUST NOT BEING USED, IT'S OUTDATED.

UM, OR IT'S, YOU KNOW, NO LONGER, YOU KNOW, CURRENT.

AND OUR, OUR COLLECTION POLICY IS VERY, VERY BROAD BECAUSE WE SERVE A DIVERSE BASE, YOU KNOW, THE ENTIRE CITY OF DALLAS.

I SEE PATRICK'S HAND WAS UP AND THEN HEATHER NEXT.

SO, UM, PATRICK WE CAN'T HEAR YOU.

SORRY.

HOW OFTEN DO ONE OF THOSE FORMS GET FILLED OUT? IS IT LIKE MONTHLY OR WEEKLY OR IN THE LAST, IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, WE'VE HAD TWO, ONE A YEAR BASICALLY ONE A YEAR BASICALLY.

AND BEFORE THE YEAR BEFORE THAT, NONE .

RIGHT.

AND, AND THERE'S, I'M THIS HEATHER LOWE, I'M, I'M JUST JUMPING IN, YOU KNOW, AND IT'S, IT'S NOT ALWAYS A DECISION BETWEEN REMOVING THE ITEM AND KEEPING THE ITEM.

SOMETIMES WE MIGHT MOVE IT FROM, YOU KNOW, LIKE JUVENILE READERS TO JUVENILE NONFICTION OR, OR MAKE A MORE NUANCED DETERMINATION ABOUT, ABOUT THE BOOK.

UM, SO I MEAN, THEY ARE, THEY ARE HELPFUL TO US IN SOME WAYS AND HELPING MATCH THE BOOK TO THE RIGHT PLACE IN THE COLLECTION AS WELL.

THAT, THAT IS VERY TRUE.

THE, THE MOST RECENT REQUEST WE HAD, UM, THE RECOMMENDATION WAS TO MOVE IT, JUST CHANGE THE CALL NUMBER.

IT'S JUST MOVING IT A COUPLE OF FEET DOWN THE SHELF, BUT IT'S PUTTING IT AMONGST SIMILAR MATERIAL THAT WE HOPED WOULD PUT IT BEFORE THE AUDIENCE IT WAS REALLY INTENDED FOR.

OKAY.

WHICH WAS NOT WHAT THE CUSTOMER REQUESTED, BUT .

ALL RIGHT.

THE OTHER HEATHER .

HEY EVERYBODY.

I JUST HAVE A QUICK QUESTION.

SO I KNOW THAT, UM, SOME LIBRARIES ARE DOING, UTILIZING THE GRAPHICS FROM A L A, WHICH THIS YEAR AT SELECT FREEDOM RATE, ARE YOU ALL USING THOSE OR ARE YOU USING YOUR OWN? AND THE ONLY REASON WHY I'M ASKING IS I KNOW, UH, I WAS THINKING FROM THE SCHOOL LIBRARY PERSPECTIVE, UM, SEEING THOSE FAMIL THAT FAMILIARITY

[00:20:01]

BETWEEN THE TEAMS AND THE STUDENTS YOU ALL SERVE, AND THE SCHOOLS OR DISTRICTS THAT MAY BE USING THOSE GRAPHICS ALSO.

LET MELISSA ANSWER THAT ONE.

UH, YES, WE ARE, WE'RE GOING TO, UH, CUSTOMIZE THEM BY SLAPPING OUR OWN LOGO ON THERE AND, UM, YOU KNOW, PUTTING A QR CODE TO, UH, TO CONNECT TO OUR CATALOG.

SO IF PEOPLE WANT TO CHECK OUT ONE OF THE 13 TOP CHALLENGED BOOKS OF LAST YEAR, THEY CAN EASILY DO THAT.

UM, BUT YEAH, WE ARE USING THOSE MATERIALS.

SO ARE YOU STILL CALLING IT BAND BOOKS WEEK OR DID YOU CHANGE IT TO LET FREEDOM READ? I'M JUST, I'M JUST CURIOUS.

OH, WELL, I MEAN, BAND BOOKS WEEK IS KIND OF THE, I KIND OF THINK OF IT AS THE GENERIC PHRASE FOR WHAT THE WEEK IS, WHATEVER, WHATEVER WE CALL IT.

SO, WELL THAT'S WHAT THEY USED TO CALL IT FOR DECADES.

YEAH.

AND THEN THIS YEAR THEY CAME OUT WITH A NEW TAGLINE.

SO I WAS JUST WONDERING, UM, TO PASS ALONG TO, UH, THE CONSTITUENTS THAT I HELP REPRESENT.

YEAH.

BECAUSE I KNOW THAT ONE, I KNOW A COUPLE OF THE, OF THE LIBRARIES I, I REPRESENT IN D SEVEN BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, THEY ARE DIRECTLY WORKING WITH THOSE SCHOOLS, PARTICULARLY, UH, IN THE SKYLINE AREA.

SO THAT'S, THAT, THAT LIBRARY THERE, THE, THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IS DOING SOME OUTREACH WITH THE BUCKNER, UH, HOME ASSOCIATION FOR BUCKNER TERRACE.

SO THAT'S WHY I WAS ASKING.

YEAH, YEAH.

THANK YOU.

YEAH, WE'RE USING THE SAME MATERIAL FROM A L A.

THANK YOU MELISSA.

APPRECIATE IT.

OKAY.

STAN, WE CAN'T HEAR YOU STAN.

NOPE.

HAPPENS.

I KNOW.

GET THAT SAME QUIN FACE WHEN I'M LOOKING FOR .

OH, OKAY.

THERE WE GO.

SORRY.

UM, COMPUTERS, HOW, HOW IS THIS CHALLENGING IMPACTING OUR SCHOOLS THAT ARE ALSO PUBLIC LIBRARIES LIKE HAMPTON AND ARCADIA PARK? SO WE HAVE NOT HAD A CHALLENGE THAT IS, UM, FOCUSED ON ANY OF OUR SCHOOL LIBRARIES.

AND THE RECENT HOUSE BILL 900 THAT WAS CALLING FOR VENDORS TO RATE BOOKS IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY A TEXAS JUDGE.

UM, SO WE'RE NOT ADDRESSING THAT RIGHT NOW.

IT'S NOT AN ISSUE FOR US.

HEY, JOE, ACTUALLY THERE WAS A STAY THAT WAS ISSUED LATE LAST NIGHT BY THE FIFTH CIRCUIT.

OKAY.

.

YOU KNOW, IT'S CHANGING ALL THE TIME.

, THANK YOU FOR THAT UPDATE.

HEATHER WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THAT .

OH, WE ARE TOO.

YEP.

YEP.

SO WE ARE BASICALLY FOLLOWING, UH, DSDS LEAD WHEN IT COMES TO THAT SINCE WE ARE, UM, IN COLLABORATION WITH THEM.

SO.

ALRIGHT.

ANY MORE QUESTIONS ON BAND BOOKS WEEK, JOE? YES.

JUST A COMMENT.

UM, I THINK IT'S REALLY GOOD TO HAVE A DIFFERENT BYLINE INSTEAD OF BAND BOOKS OR HOW TO FREEDOM TO READ.

YEAH.

BUT I THINK, UM, WHEN YOU SAY BAND BOOKS, PEOPLE THINK OH SO HORRIBLE BOOKS.

YES.

AND THEN YOU SEE THE LIST OF THE BAND BOOKS YEAH.

TO KILL MOCKINGBIRD AND HARRY POTTER.

AND I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO SEE.

THESE WERE THE BOOKS OF A BANNED IN THE PAST.

RIGHT.

MAYBE THE PROCESS IS SO AND SO.

I HATE FOR US TO NOT USE THE WORD DAN BOOKS AND, AND EDUCATE THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU SAID, MAYBE HAVE A CONTENT.

HOW MANY DAN BOOKS HAVE YOU READ? YES.

YOU KNOW, AND SOMEBODY TRIES TO, AND I ENCOURAGE 'CAUSE THEY'RE, I MEAN, AND I DO THINK WHEN WE DO IT AT THE, THE DISPLAYS, IT'S UP TO EACH UNIT TO DECIDE.

UM, WE WILL BE GIVING THEM, BUT MOST OF THEM ARE USING WORDS, BAND BOOKS, BOTH.

THIS IS THE GRAPHIC ON OUR CALENDAR POST'S, BAND BOOKS.

WE CAN READ THE A, A GRAPHIC FREEDOM READ, BUT TO SHOW SOME OF THE PAST BOOKS THAT WERE BANNED, LIKE MM-HMM.

WELL THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT ALL OUR DISPLAY THAT OKAY.

THAT'S, THAT'S WHY MEANT YEAH, WE PULL OUT ALL THE BOOKS AND THAT'S A RELIABLE SAMPLE.

HOW COMPREHENSIVE, UH, IS THE LIST? DOES IT GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO MARK TWAIN AND YOU KNOW, PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN BANNED FOR DECADES? OH YEAH.

GOOD, GOOD, GOOD.

YEAH.

THAT WAS THE BAD ONE.

YEAH.

ANYWAY,

[00:25:01]

THAT WAS MY POINT.

OKAY.

ANYTHING ELSE FOR THIS GROUP? ALRIGHT, THANKS MELISSA.

JESS, KRISTEN, THANK YOU FOR COMING ON ALL MY TURN.

I'LL RECOGNIZE THAT WE HAVE SOME GUESTS WITH US TODAY.

UM, WE'VE PROVIDED THEM WITH AN AGENDA, SO WELCOME GUESTS.

THOSE WHO CAN'T SEE IN THE BACK, THEY'RE HERE IN THE CORNER.

, CAN WE INTRODUCE THEM? SURE.

YOU WOULD LIKE YOU TO INTRODUCE YOURSELVES? STAND SO THEY CAN SEE YOU ON, WE'RE BOTH JOURNALISM STUDENTS AT SMU.

I'M MORGAN BERRY, I'M DAVIS AL BON JOURNALIST.

WOO.

I WAS A JOURNALISM BUT NOT AT SMU.

UM, ALL RIGHT, GREAT.

SO FOR YOU, I'M THE DIRECTOR OF JOE GOODE.

UM, RIGHT NOW MY UPDATE FOR YOU ALL, I'M GONNA START WITH THE BOARD'S RESPONSIBILITY, MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD.

MOVING FORWARD, SINCE WE'VE HAD OUR NEW, UM, CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS ELECTED AND INSTALLED IN JUNE, THERE'S SOME QUESTION.

UM, MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN REAPPOINTED, SOME ARE NOT BEING REAPPOINTED.

WE WERE, WE, FELICIA CHECKED WITH THE CITY'S SECRETARY'S OFFICE ON THE RULING.

AND THE RULING IS YOU ARE HELD OVER IN YOUR APPOINTMENT, UM, UNTIL A NEW APPOINTEE IS MADE OR UNTIL YOU RESIGN.

SO THAT'S WHERE WE ARE FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN APPOINTED OR THOSE WHO MAY THINK ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WILL BE COMING, COMING OR IF YOUR COUNCIL MEMBER CHANGED.

UM, FOR OUR CHAIR, THE MAYOR IS WORKING HIS WAY THROUGH CHAIR ASSIGNMENTS, SO THEY WILL HAPPEN WHEN HE MAKES THE ASSIGNMENT.

WE DON'T HAVE ANY TIMELINE ON THAT, SO.

ALL RIGHT.

SO I JUST WANTED TO GET THAT CLEAR 'CAUSE WE HAD SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT THE LAST MEETING.

UM, SO YOU ALL ARE CALLED HOLDOVERS , EVEN IF YOU'VE BEEN REAPPOINTMENT.

IF YOU'VE BEEN REAPPOINTED NO, YOU'RE YOU'RE AN APPOINTED AGAIN, .

YEAH.

YOU'RE IN A SEAT.

YEAH.

AND MANY OF 'EM HAVE ALREADY TAKEN CARE OF IT, SO THERE'S JUST A FEW WHO HAVE NOT.

UM, OKAY.

THEN WE DID HAVE AN UPDATE FROM OUR STRATEGIC PLAN FOLKS WHO WERE VISITING HERE ON THE 14TH AND 15TH OF SEPTEMBER.

UM, AND SO WE REALLY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE NEXT ROUND OF COMMUNITY LISTENING SESSIONS BECAUSE WE'RE REALLY TARGETING COMMUNITIES THAT DON'T USE THE LIBRARY TO GET THEIR FEEDBACK ON THE FUTURE OF THE LIBRARY.

UM, AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT, UM, WE HAVE NOT ENGAGED WITH IN THE PAST.

SO WE'RE, WE ARE TRAINING STAFF TO GO OUT AND DO SMALL FOCUS GROUPS.

SO WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THAT TRAINING.

SO DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF WILL ACTUALLY BE GOING OUT, HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION MEETINGS, UM, LOTS OF OTHER MEETINGS IN EACH MANAGER WILL GO TO TWO IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD.

SO WE'RE GOING TO GET A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF FEEDBACK OVER THE NEXT MONTH.

SO WE FEEL LIKE SOME OF THE FOCUS AREAS, SOME OF OUR FOCUS MIGHT EVOLVE AS THAT'S HAPPENING.

SO WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO, INSTEAD OF HAVING FIVE BIGGER MEETINGS, WE DECIDED TO HAVE TWO, UH, LISTENING SESSIONS.

WE'RE CALLING THEM.

SO THESE WILL BE AVAILABLE TO ANYONE.

WE'RE GOING TO DO ONE IN SPANISH AND ONE IN ENGLISH.

AND YOU CAN'T COME IN PERSON AND LISTEN AT A LIBRARY IN CASE YOU DON'T HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY AT HOME.

OTHERWISE IT IS A CALL IN DIAL IN.

WE'LL BE USING THE CITY, CITY HALLS PROCESS.

UM, AND THE, THEY'LL THEN BE PRESENTING WHERE WE ARE AT THIS POINT IN TIME WITH OUR GOALS WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN, AND THEN GETTING FEEDBACK FROM, UH, THOSE FOLKS LISTENING.

THAT WILL HAPPEN ON NOVEMBER 7TH IN SPANISH AND NOVEMBER 9TH IN ENGLISH.

AND WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS WE'LL BE HAVING A LOT OF PROMOTION ON THAT.

AND WE'LL NAME THE LIBRARY LOCATIONS WHERE YOU CAN GO IN PERSON IF YOU WANT TO.

THAT BRINGS ME INTO WHEN THE CONSULTANTS WILL PRESENT TO YOU ALL PRIOR TO US TAKING IT TO CITY COUNCIL FOR APPROVAL.

SO SINCE OUR COMMUNITY LISTENING DATES HAD TO GET MOVED BACK TO NOVEMBER BECAUSE OF THE BOND COMMUNITY MEETINGS, DARN IT, WE HAD PICKED THE SAME DATES, , SO WE GOT PUSHED BACK A LITTLE BIT.

SO OUR TIMELINE HAS GOTTEN PUSHED BACK SLIGHTLY.

UM, I AM GOING TO PROPOSE IF YOU ALL AGREE TO CALL A SPECIAL MEETING AT THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD ON

[00:30:01]

DECEMBER 12TH.

IT'S ALSO A TUESDAY.

IT WILL BE ALL VIRTUAL.

IT WON'T HAVE TO COME DOWN UNLESS YOU WANT TO.

YOU'LL LET ME KNOW, BUT I FIGURED IT'D BE EASIER.

WE JUST DID IT ALL VIRTUALLY WHERE THE CONSULTANTS WILL REPORT WHAT OUR GOALS ARE AND GET YOUR FEEDBACK AND TALK IT THROUGH BEFORE WE TAKE THE FINAL DRAFT.

IS THAT AMENABLE TO EVERYONE? A SPECIAL CALL MEETING JUST TO DO THE STRATEGIC PLAN? THUMBS UP FROM AAN.

STAN PATRICK, THANK YOU.

PERFECT.

BECAUSE WE DO WANNA GET YOUR INPUT BEFORE WE TAKE IT FORTH.

AND THEN WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER THAT IS WE WILL BE DOING A BRIEFING AT THE QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE.

AND I DON'T HAVE THE DATE ON THAT YET, BUT IT WILL LIKELY BE THE FIRST MEETING THEY HAVE IN JANUARY.

AND IF THEY KEEP TO THE SAME SCHEDULE THEY HAVE NOW, IT WILL BE THE THIRD MONDAY IN JANUARY, WHICH MEANS WE WON'T BE ABLE TO BRIEF CITY COUNCIL UNTIL THE NEXT BRIEFING MEETING.

SO IT WILL LIKELY BE FEBRUARY BEFORE WE FINALIZE WHAT WAS THE DATE? THE 12TH OF DECEMBER.

12TH OF DECEMBER WILL BE THE SPECIAL CALL MEETING AND WE WILL DO IT AT FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON JUST TO KEEP THE SAME TIME AS WE ALWAYS DO.

UM, AND SO THAT'S WHAT'S COMING UP.

THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING VERY HARD TOWARDS.

SO SURE.

WE'VE HAD FOCUS GROUP MEETINGS WITH A GREAT NUMBER OF LIBRARY STAFF ON TECHNOLOGY NEEDS, THE NEEDS AND OUR FACILITIES AND WHAT THEY'RE HEARING FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS COMING INTO THEIR BUILDINGS, AS WELL AS WE HAVE A FOCUS GROUP JUST ON THIS BUILDING ON THE CENTRAL LIBRARY AND ITS FUNCTIONALITY FOR US AS A MOTHERSHIP .

SO THERE'S SO MUCH INFORMATION COMING IN.

SO WE'RE VERY EXCITED TO SHARE ALL OF THAT AND I THINK WE'RE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

EVERYTHING I'VE SEEN SO FAR IS, IS PRETTY AMAZING.

GREAT.

AND WE'RE HAPPY TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.

THE NEXT THING, UM, ON MY AGENDA IS TO SHARE THE BOND TOWN HALL.

UH, THEY STARTED TODAY.

THEY HAD THE DISTRICT ONE HAD THEIR MEETING AT NOON TODAY.

AND UM, SO I DID BRING A LIST OF TOWN HALL MEETINGS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO, BUT THEY'RE NOT EASY TO FIND ON THE WEBSITE, SO I CAN CHECK ONE DOWN, PASS IT AROUND.

IF I DON'T HAVE MORE, I CAN MAKE MORE COPIES.

KEEP THAT ONE THING.

I MIGHT PASS THE WHOLE LIST.

SANDY, YOU KEEP IT.

OKAY.

SO ALL THE MEETINGS, THIS IS THE LIST OF PUBLIC MEETINGS FOR THE BOND.

SO WE ARE NOW, UM, HOPEFULLY, UH, UP FOR GETTING THREE NEW LIBRARIES IN THE 2024 BOND AND POTENTIALLY SOME A D A, UM, AMERICANS WITH DISABILITY, UM, RENOVATIONS IN SOME OF OUR BRANCHES.

SO THE SUBCOMMITTEE OVER CRITICAL FACILITIES, WHICH LIBRARY FALLS UNDER CRITICAL FACILITIES.

THAT SUBCOMMITTEE, UM, MADE TWO RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOND COMMITTEE.

ONE WAS THE HIGHER NUMBER AND ONE'S A LOWER NUMBER.

AND RIGHT NOW THE HIGHER NUMBER INCLUDES ALL THREE OF OUR LOCATIONS THAT WE HAD SET AS PRIORITIES, WHICH IS THE REMODELING AND EXPANSION OF THE PRESTON ROYAL BRANCH, THE, UH, REPLACEMENT OF THE PARK FOREST BRANCH AND THE REPLACEMENT OF THE NORTH OAK CLIFF BRANCH, ALL OF WHICH WE OWN PROPERTY FOR.

SO WE'D JUST BE GOING OUT TO BUILD, TO ACTUALLY BUILD THOSE BUILDINGS.

WOULD YOU NAME THOSE THREE? I'LL YES.

PRESTON, ROYAL PARK FOREST AND NORTH OAK CLIFF.

THOSE ARE THE THREE LOCATIONS.

AND WE'VE ALSO ASKED FOR A LITTLE OVER $2 MILLION FOR, UM, A D A UPDATES, WHICH WOULD GIVE US AUTOMATIC DOORS AND UPDATES, SOME RESTROOMS IN SOME OF OUR OLDER BUILDINGS TO BE A D A COMPLIANT.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT DISTRICTS THESE THREE ARE IN? MM-HMM.

TWO ARE IN DISTRICT 13 AND ONE IS IN DISTRICT ONE.

PARK FOREST IS SIX.

OH, DID IT CHANGE THE SIX? PARK FOREST IS 13.

OH, IT'S IN 13.

I'M FAIRLY SURE IS IN 13 DATA NOW.

WILLIS', UM, DISTRICT GOT EXPANDED IN THE LAST REDISTRICTING, RIGHT? MAY IT JUST CHANGED IN MAY.

SO THERE ARE TWO IN DISTRICT TWO AND 13 FOR COUNCILWOMAN WILLIS AND ONE IN DISTRICT ONE FOR COUNCIL MEMBER WEST.

AND THOSE, UH, LIKE PRESTON AND ROYAL, IT'S NOT MOVING IT, IT'S JUST NO, IT'S A RENOVATION AND EXPANSION.

SO WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT BUILDING ANY NEW LIBRARY.

IT'S JUST RENOVATING WHAT WE RENOVATING THE EXISTING BUILDING, THOSE THREE.

OKAY, GOT IT.

MM-HMM.

AND THEN REPLACING THE, THE AND AND PARK FOREST'S PROPERTY IS

[00:35:01]

LESS THAN A MILE AWAY FROM WHERE IT IS NOW.

AND OF COURSE THE NORTH OAK CLIFF LAND IS LITERALLY NEXT DOOR.

, WE OWN A LOT NEXT DOOR, SO IT'LL ALLOW US TO EXPAND.

IS IS IT WHERE THE PARKING LOT NOW IS IN THAT GRASSY SPACE THAT GOES ALL THE WAY UP TO BISHOP.

OH, OKAY.

WE OWN THAT WHOLE STRIP.

OH, OKAY.

YEAH, IT'S TWO THIRDS OF THE LOT.

OH.

UP TO THE, UM, ALLEY.

WHEN DO YOU THINK THAT'LL START? WELL, WE HAVE TO GET IT APPROVED ON THE BOND FIRST STEP ONE SEVEN YEARS OUT.

NO, NO.

LIKELY.

IT DEPENDS.

WELL, IT REALLY DEPENDS.

IT DEPENDS ON, UM, WHEN THEY DO THE ELECTION.

SO THEY HAVEN'T DECIDED WHETHER ELECTION WILL BE IN MAY IN 2024 OR NOVEMBER.

THAT HAS NOT BEEN SAID YET.

IF IT'S MAY WITHIN SIX OR SEVEN MONTHS AFTERWARDS, WE COULD BE WORKING TOWARDS IT.

WHICH ELECTION? EITHER MAY 20, 24 OR NOVEMBER.

NO, BUT, BUT WHAT ELECTION? THE BOND ELECTION OF THE BOND ELECTION, YES.

YOU THE PUBLIC GET TO VOTE ON THE BOND.

OH, GOOD.

THAT IS PRESENTED.

BUT WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW, AND THIS IS WHERE YOUR VOICE CAN BE HEARD, THIS IS WHERE THE BOND COMMITTEE THAT THE MAYOR HAS APPOINTED, SO IT'S ALL PUBLIC PEOPLE, THEY'RE, THEY ARE SETTING FORTH THEIR PROPOSAL, WHICH WILL THEN GO TO COUNCIL OF WHAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE PUT ON THE BOND.

SO MM-HMM.

, THERE'S A BILLION DOLLARS, THEY'RE PLAYING $1 BILLION, BUT YOU KEEP IT IN, IN PERSPECTIVE.

THE, UM, THE PARKS DEPARTMENT, YOU KNOW, THEIR INITIAL ASK WAS 700 MILLION, WHICH MEANS, YOU KNOW, THAT'S THREE QUARTERS OF MILE ALREADY.

UM, SO THAT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN .

BUT THE LIBRARY, UH, REALLY I THINK OUR ASK WAS AROUND 50 MILLION, UM, AND THEY SHIPPED IT DOWN TO ABOUT 35 MILLION.

SO WE'RE, WE'RE A SMALL PART OF THE PIE, UH, COMPARED TO A LOT OF OTHER DEPARTMENTS.

SO, UM, THE SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTED TO THE COMMITTEE ABOUT LAST WEEK, SOMETIME MAY, I'M LOSING MY TIME.

IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN LAST WEEK, MIGHT'VE BEEN THE WEEK BEFORE.

UM, WHEN THEY REPORTED TO THE BOND COMMITTEE THAT THE MAYOR HAS APPOINTED, THEY RECOMMENDED TWO THINGS.

THEIR HIGH BID WAS TO DO THE THREE LOCATIONS.

NO, A D A BELOW BID WAS TO DO PRESS AND ROYAL NORTH OAK CLIFF AND A D A IN PARK FOREST FELL OUT OF THE BID OF THEIR RECOMMENDATION.

SO MOVING FORWARD, THEY'LL PRESENT THIS TO THE PUBLIC AND THAT'S WHAT THESE TOWN HALLS ARE ABOUT.

AND THIS IS WHERE YOU ALL HAVE A CHANCE TO ADVOCATE FOR THE LIBRARY.

LIBRARY STAFF CANNOT ADVOCATE FOR THIS.

JUST LIKE THE BUDGET.

WE CAN REPORT FACTS AND STATISTICS WE CANNOT ADVOCATE.

SO THAT'S WHERE THIS COMES IN FOR OUR FOLKS AT FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY AND OUR MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD TO GO OUT AND SPEAK ON BEHALF OF LIBRARY.

WOULD YOU EXPLAIN THE A D A AMERICANS WITH DISABILITY ACT? SO THE WHAT'S NOT KNOW SOMETHING THAT'S NOT IN CLIENTS NOW.

WE HAVE SIX LO I THINK SIX FIVE OR SIX LOCATIONS WHERE THEY DON'T HAVE THE AUTOMATIC OPENING DOORS.

AND THE BATHROOMS OF THE BUILDINGS ARE JUST SO OLD BECAUSE THE BUILDINGS WERE BUILT IN THE EIGHTIES THAT THEY'RE NOT QUITE WIDE ENOUGH.

THE STALLS TO MEET THE A D A NEW A D A REQUIREMENTS.

SO A D A WAS UPDATED AND WE DON'T, WE NO LONGER MEET SOME OF THE, UM, MINIMUM STANDARDS.

I WOULD THINK THAT WAS ALMOST A, IT'S ONE OF MY PRIORITIES.

YEAH.

RED FLAGS.

OTHERWISE YOU'RE GONNA SOTHE SOMEBODY LIKE THAT.

I MEAN, MAYBE, I MEAN, I WOULD BE WORRIED MORE ABOUT THAT THAN A BAND BOOK IS WHAT I'M SAYING.

SO DO KNOW THAT THAT IS ON OUR NEEDS INVENTORY ANYWAY.

AND WE'RE WORKING WITH THAT, WORKING ON THAT WITH OUR BUILDING SERVICES DEPARTMENT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE.

BUT THERE'S A HUGE BUILDING NEEDS LIST.

I MEAN THERE'S A HUGE INVENTORY NEEDS LIST AND, AND WE HAVE, JUST WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT, I'VE GOT FOUR LOCATIONS RIGHT NOW WITH TEMPORARY COOLING UNITS IN THEIR PARKING LOTS THAT WERE HAVING HVAC PROBLEMS, THEN YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEM IF THAT'S A .

SO, I MEAN, THERE'S A LOT OF, THERE'S A LOT OF NEED.

WINTER'S COMING.

WINTER'S COMING.

.

IS THERE A ONE PAGE THAT HAS THE SIX A D LIKE THE AADA A INFORMATION? I CAN GET THAT FOR YOU.

IT'S NOT A ONE PAGE BECAUSE IT'S A HUGE BOOKLET.

IT IS, IT IT IS CONTAINED WITHIN ALL OF OUR MAJOR MAINTENANCE NEEDS.

SO IT'S ABOUT 10 PAGES, BUT I CAN PULL IT OUT FOR YOU.

JOE, DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU KNOW THE SPECIFIC DOLLAR AMOUNTS THAT HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED BY THE BOND COMMITTEE FOR THE DIFFERENT LIBRARIES? I DO.

UM, I DON'T HAVE MY BOOK IN FRONT OF ME, BUT FROM MEMORY 13 MILLION OR NO, NO,

[00:40:01]

I'VE TAKEN THAT BACK.

I THINK IT'S 15 MILLION FOR EACH OF THE NEW BUILDS.

AND I DON'T, I DON'T WANNA QUOTE YOU ON PRESTON BECAUSE I DON'T REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS.

IT WAS EITHER 6.8 OR 8.8, I'M NOT SURE.

UM, IT WAS A SMALLER AMOUNT BECAUSE PRESTON ALREADY HAD, WE ALREADY HAD 3.8 MILLION READY TO GO FOR PRESTON.

SO WE WERE ASKING FOR MORE TO BRING US UP TO THE, I THINK EITHER 10 OR $11 MILLION MARK FOR THAT RENOVATION.

AND THEN YOU SAID FOR THE NEW BILLS, 15 AND THAT WOULD BE WHAT LOCATIONS FOR THAT? UH, NORTH OAK CLIFF AND PARK FOREST, THEY'RE ALL PRICED OUT.

THEY'RE ALL RENOVATIONS.

WE ARE ACTUALLY A NEW BUILDING.

RIGHT, RIGHT.

GOT IT.

OKAY.

SORRY, PRESTON, FOR PRESTON ROYAL IS THE NEW IS A RENOVATION, THE OTHER TWO ARE NEW BUILDINGS.

RIGHT.

IT'S A REPLACEMENT BUILDING.

OKAY, GOT IT.

YOU SAY REPLACEMENT NOT NEW, EVEN THOUGH IT'S A NEW BUILDING LIBRARY DOESN'T TEAR DOWN C PRESTON ROYAL AND BUILD A NEW PRESTON ROYAL? NO, NO.

PRESTON ROYAL WILL GET RENOVATED THE EXISTING BUILDING.

OKAY.

ALRIGHT.

IT'LL NOT BE A DEMOLISHED REBUILD, IT'LL BE REMODEL.

POSSIBLE EXPANSION.

THAT NEIGHBORHOOD IS VERY, VERY, VERY ADAMANT ABOUT KEEPING THAT MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILDING, WHICH WE LOVE IS BEAUTIFUL.

AND WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS AND GET THEM A LITTLE MORE SPACE.

IT'S PRETTY HEMMED IN BY CHURCH AND OKAY, THERE'S SOME CHALLENGES.

DO WE EVER GO UP, DO WE EVER DO THE SECOND FLOOR? IT'S CURRENTLY NOT ZONED FOR A SECOND LEVEL.

OH.

BUT IT'S SOMETHING, AND THAT WOULD COST A LOT MORE MONEY, SO PROBABLY NOT WOULD BE MY FIRST GUESS.

PROBABLY COULDN'T AFFORD IT.

OKAY.

THANK YOU.

YOU'RE WELCOME.

IF WE'RE GONNA BE TALKING YES, WE NEED TO YES, YOU NEED TO BE TALKING.

NEED TO KNOW WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AND THANK YOU MARY.

THAT WOULD BE GOOD TO GET ALL THAT.

YEAH.

THEBA STUFF, THE ADVOCACY.

AND I'LL PUT, I'VE GOT A, A ONE PAGER I'VE PUT TOGETHER FOR STAFF, BUT REALLY THE ADVOCACY POINTS ON THIS IS INCLUDE THE LIBRARY AND THE BOND.

THAT'S REALLY ALL YOU NEED TO SAY.

IF WE WANT THE LIBRARY, ALL OF THE LIBRARIES INCLUDED IN THE BOND, BECAUSE RIGHT NOW IT'S GETTING SPLIT UP.

RIGHT.

SO THAT'S REALLY THE MESSAGE BECAUSE WHILE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ONLY RECOMMENDED THESE THINGS, THAT'S IT NOW IS UP TO THE COMMITTEE.

AND THEN ULTIMATELY WE'LL GO TO COUNCIL WHERE IT COULD ALL CHANGE.

AGAIN, AS YOU ALL KNOW, , DOES THAT MEAN THAT THE LIBRARIES, THE, THE, THE THREE UH, BUILDINGS MM-HMM.

AND ALL THAT COULD BE TOTALLY EXCLUDED? OR ARE THEY ABSOLUTELY.

YEAH.

YEAH.

OKAY.

THEY COULD ALL BE INCLUDED.

THEY CAN CHOOSE, THEY CAN BE EXCLUDED OR YEAH, GO AHEAD STAN.

IT'S HAPPENED BEFORE.

AND NORTH OAK CLIFF IS ACTUALLY A TEMPORARY BUILDING THAT WAS OPENED IN THE MID EIGHTIES.

SO I MEAN IT'S, YOU KNOW, 30 SOME YEARS OLD AS A TEMPORARY BUILDING.

VERY HABIT .

WELL THOSE ARE THE IMPORTANT PIECES TO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT.

UM, YOU GET DOWN TO SPECIFICS AND SAY THE BATHROOM AT THIS , YOU CAN'T GET A WHEELCHAIR THROUGH THE DOOR.

THE BATHROOM OF THIS, THE MESSAGE TEMPORARY, THE MESSAGE THAT I'M TELLING THE WE REALLY WANNA KEEP THE FACTS.

AND THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS, IS THE CITY INVESTED IN THESE PROPERTIES ALREADY IN THE 2008 BOND? SO WE BOUGHT LAND FOR ALL OF THESE.

SO WE'VE ALREADY, THE CITY HAS ALREADY INVESTED IN THESE AND PROMISED THE COMMUNITY THEIR NEW LIBRARIES.

AND HERE WE ARE 20 PLUS YEARS LATER.

YES.

AND WE HAVEN'T, WE HAVE NOT FULFILLED OUR PROMISE.

THE CITY HAS NOT FULFILLED THEIR PROMISE.

THE CITY NEEDS TO FULFILL THEM.

SO I THINK THAT FOR ME, THAT'S THE STRONGEST MESSAGE IS WE'VE ALREADY INVESTED, THE CITY HAS ALREADY INVESTED IN, THERE'S ALREADY MONEY IN THESE PROJECTS.

DRAWINGS, IN SOME CASES THEY HAVE BEEN ABANDONED, SO I WOULDN'T OH YEAH, YEAH.

BUT INVESTMENT WISE.

BUT THERE'S MONEY HAS BEEN INVESTED FROM THE 2008, SO IT KIND OF GET THE JOB DONE.

YES.

SO PLEASE GET INFORMATION ABOUT WHICH LIBRARY RISK.

I CAN SEND YOU THAT SURE, SURE, SURE, SURE.

SEND ADA I'LL HAVE TO LOOK IT UP, BUT I CAN DEFINITELY SEND IT TO YOU.

YEAH, YEAH, FOR SURE.

BUT JOE, JUST TO BE CLEAR, THERE ARE, THERE'S MORE THAN, THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR FULFILLING THESE A D A REQUIREMENTS.

I MEAN, IF IT COMES DOWN TO PUTTING THE A D A THING IN THE BOND OR GETTING A NEW PARK FOREST LIBRARY, THAT SEEMS LIKE AN EASY DECISION FOR ME ANYWAY, IS TO BUILD A NEW PARK FOREST LIBRARY AND GET THE A D A MONEY FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

WELL, AND PARK FOREST FALLS UNDER

[00:45:01]

BOTH OF THEM.

'CAUSE PARK FOREST OR, UM, PARK FOREST AND PRESTON ROYAL ARE PROBABLY TWO LOCATIONS THAT DON'T HAVE A D A COMPLIANT BATHROOMS .

I KNOW PRESTON ROYAL DOES NOT, AND I KNOW SKYLINE DOESN'T, HEATHER , BUT JUST, YOU KNOW, OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, THE ONES THAT I DO KNOW.

SO THEY'RE, YOU KNOW, AND WHEN I WAS TALKING TO THE BOND COMMITTEE, I POINTED OUT TO THEM BECAUSE, AND I'LL SEND YOU THE SLIDES, THE EACH OF THE LOCATIONS THAT ARE SLATED FOR EITHER REBUILD OR RENOVATION, UM, EACH OF THEM HAVE OVER A MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF MAJOR MAINTENANCE.

I NEED TO BE DONE.

SO I KEPT SAYING, WELL, I'M SAVING YOU A MILLION DOLLARS , WE CAN TAKE THAT OFF.

MAJOR MAINTENANCE .

ANYWAY, I MADE THEM LAUGH, WHICH I ALWAYS THINK IS A GOOD IDEA WHEN YOU'RE, YOU KNOW, IN FRONT OF THOSE COMMITTEES.

AND IT'S LATE AT NIGHT.

IT WAS LIKE EIGHT O'CLOCK AT NIGHT, IT WAS LATE FOR ME.

YEAH.

ANYWAY, THAT'S IT FOR ME.

.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? OKAY.

SO LET'S MOVE INTO OUR NEW BUSINESS.

GARY, YOU'RE ALWAYS THE NEW BUSINESS.

A NEW BUSINESS.

YOU'RE ALWAYS, WE'RE ALWAYS GOOD BUSINESS FOR ANYONE I'VE YET, I'M MARY LANSKY, I'M THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR FRIENDS OF THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

AND ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL FOR ALLOWING ME TO SIT IN UNDER MEETINGS AS A GUEST.

UM, MY INFORMA, SO I DON'T KNOW IF YOU ALL TALKED, BUT THERE'S A NEW CITY BUDGET.

LET'S MOVE OFF THE BOND TO THE BUDGET AND THANK YOU ALL FOR SHOWING UP, SPEAKING UP, UH, HANGING OUT FOR 12 HOURS OR MORE TO TALK AT SET CITY COUNCIL, WHATEVER HAPPENED, EVERYONE'S HELP, UM, HAS NOW, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS, BUT YOU'LL BE RAMPING UP FOR MORE HOURS AND MORE STUFF LIKE LAST MEETING THE MACHINE BACK UP AGAIN FROM 60 SOME ODD NEWS, WONDERFUL STAFF MEMBERS AND MORE HOURS COMING, UM, WHEN JOE SAYS IT'S READY TO GO .

SO , STAY TUNED FOR THE THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR ALL OF THAT WORK.

UM, WE WILL BE, YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM US ABOUT THE BOND.

UM, WE'RE KIND OF REGROUPING, MAKE SURE WE HAVE THIS LIST OF MEETINGS AND GET THE TALKING POINTS TOGETHER.

UM, SOMEONE ON OUR BOARD MEETING TODAY MENTIONED IT'S LIKE WE MAY HAVE SOME ADVOCACY FATIGUE, BUT I THINK WE'RE GONNA NEED EVERYBODY'S HELP AGAIN TO TRY TO STAY THE COURSE ON THIS UPCOMING BOND, WHICH IS, IT'S A, IT'S A BIT OF REGRET, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T KNOW WHEN IT'S GONNA HAPPEN, THE ELECTION, BUT THESE MEETINGS ARE MOVING FORWARD AND WE WANT TO DO WHAT WE CAN TO, UM, MAKE SURE THE LIBRARY IS NOT OVERLOOKED IN THIS UPCOMING BOND.

I THINK WE ALL HAVE TOWN HALL MEETING FATIGUE TOO.

.

YEAH.

SO STAY TUNED.

LIKE IF YOU ALL ARE NOT SEEING EMAILS FROM FRIENDS OF THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

BUT WE'RE, AND HOPEFULLY EVERYONE SHOULD BE ON OUR, OUR E-BLAST SYSTEM.

UM, JUST REALLY QUICK.

SO, UH, THE FRIENDS HAVE FOUR MAJOR GOALS, UM, WHICH ARE INCREASING AND ENHANCING OUR ADVOCACY WORK.

UM, INCREASING OUR FUNDRAISING OR ENHANCING OUR, UH, FUNDRAISING CAPACITY, MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND DIVERSIFICATION AND BUILDING, HELPING TO BUILD OUR BRAND IN PARTS OF THE CITY WHERE WE MAY NOT BE KNOWN VERY WELL.

SO THOSE ARE, UM, OUR FOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR.

THEY'RE REALLY BIG ONES.

WE ANTICIPATE WITH THE DALLAS, THE LIBRARY STRATEGIC PLAN THAT WE MAY NEED TO MODIFY HOW WE OPERATE, UM, TO BE ABLE TO RAISE A LOT MORE MONEY, UH, FOR LIBRARY PROGRAMS AND FOR FUTURE ADVOCACY WORK.

SO WE'RE TRYING TO LAY IN THOSE PLANS NOW.

UM, OUR STAFF, WE'VE INCREASED STAFF.

WE HAVE FOUR FRIENDS OF THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS NOW.

UM, THREE FULL-TIME, ONE PART-TIME.

UM, WE ACTUALLY HAVE A FEW MORE CONTRACTORS WORKING IN THE BACKGROUND DOING MARKETING, PR AND AN ARCHIVIST.

'CAUSE WE'RE PREPARING FOR OUR 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN, IN A YEAR AND A HALF.

THOSE ARE MY GENERAL, I GUESS JOE, JOE COVERED THE BOND FOR SURE.

AND I KNOW WE WERE TRYING, WE HAVE A DINNER WITH ALL THOSE THINGS HAPPENING.

WE STILL HAVE A DINNER COMING UP AT THE END OF OCTOBER.

UM, TICKETS AND TABLES ARE AVAILABLE AND WE'D LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE.

I KNOW SANDY'S WORKING ON A TABLE AND THINK TOM IS PLANNING TO JOIN US AND HAPPY TO SAVE A TABLE FOR THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD.

, WE HAVE ONE.

ANYONE ELSE PLANNING ? ANYONE INTERESTED IN GOING? IT'S THURSDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 26.

[00:50:01]

OUR SPECIAL AUTHOR IS LINDA RUTLEDGE WHO WROTE WEST WITH GIRAFFES AND WE'RE REALLY PLEASED TO HONOR, UM, DAVID MUNSON SENIOR FOR SOME, UM, INCREDIBLE GIFTS AND WORK THAT JOE AND I DID WITH HIM BEFORE HE PASSED, UH, MID-JULY.

SO IT'S, IT'S, IT'S A BITTERSWEET EVENING, BUT IT'S GONNA BE A NICE EVENT.

UM, DAVE IS A WONDERFUL PARTNER AND UM, AND A LOT OF AMAZING THINGS ALL OVER TOWN, INCLUDING FOR THE LIBRARY.

UM, I HAVE A QUESTION.

YOU, YOU MENTIONED THE GOALS GOING FORWARD.

IS THERE ANY TALK WITH YOUR EXECUTIVE BOARD ABOUT REACHING OUT TO THE VARIOUS BRANCH, BRENDA WITH OUR BOARD NOW? NOT CURRENTLY.

WE'VE DONE THAT.

I'LL ADD IF I CAN.

I DID MARY, THANKS FOR THE REMINDER.

WITH EVERYTHING THAT'S HAPPENING WITH BOND, UM, THE BUDGET DID PASS , UM, AND, AND WE DO HAVE OUR JOB FAIR DATE SET.

IT WILL BE, UH, NOVEMBER TWO AND THREE HERE AT THE LIBRARY.

AND WE DO HAVE 65 POSITIONS TO FILL.

SO THE POSITIONS DON'T GET POSTED UNTIL OCTOBER 1ST WHEN THE NEW YEAR STARTS.

AND WE'RE DILIGENT.

WE'RE LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE RIGHT NOW WORKING ON THAT.

'CAUSE WE HAVE TO PUT EACH OF THEM IN INDIVIDUALLY.

UM, YES.

AND, AND IN DOING SO, WE FOUND A LITTLE ERROR FROM LAST YEAR.

SO WE'RE, WE'RE FIXING A FEW THINGS TOO.

SOME JOB DESCRIPTIONS AREN'T QUITE MATCHING UP WHAT WE SENT IN.

OH, .

YEAH.

YOU KNOW, ONE OF THOSE ROUND STUFF, YOU KNOW, IT'S OKAY.

BUT WE LIKE EVERYTHING TO MATCH NOW.

WE'RE, WE'RE, WE'RE CRAZY LIKE THAT.

BUT ANYWAY, SO, UM, VALERIE HERE, YOU, YOU KNOW, ALL KNOW VALERIE SENDS YOU THE EMAIL.

SHE IS DILIGENTLY WORKING ON THAT FOR US.

UM, SHE'LL BE READY TO HIRE THIS, THIS JOB FAIR.

WE WILL BE DOING INTERVIEWING ON THE SPOT.

WE'RE REAL SUCCESSFUL WITH IT.

LAST YEAR WE FELT REPOSITIONED LAST YEAR AND WE HAD 80 SOME BUILT LAST YEAR.

SO WE FEEL LIKE WE'RE EXPERTS AT IT NOW.

I WAS GONNA SAY, I PRETTY MUCH GOT THIS DOWN.

DON'T WE HAVE A JOB DOWN? WE DID IT IN 2018.

YEAH, LIKE, THEN WE REDO IT ALL AGAIN.

IT'S CRAZY.

IT IS CRAZY.

COUPLE DAYS, BUT IT'S, IT'S DEFINITELY, I MET SOME PEOPLE THAT YOU GOT FROM THAT AND THEY WERE REALLY GREAT.

SO, JOE, THIS QUESTION, HOW MANY OF THOSE JOBS REQUIRE A DEGREE IN LIBRARY SCIENCE? UM, NOT A LOT.

OKAY.

I, I ACTUALLY DON'T.

AND I CAN SEND YOU THE BREAKDOWN.

I CAN LOOK OR HEATHER LOWE IF YOU'RE STILL ON, IF YOU WANNA LOOK AT THE SPREADSHEET REAL QUICK AND SEE HOW MANY ARE ACTUAL LIBRARIANS PULLING IT UP NOW.

THANK YOU.

JUMP IN WHENEVER.

'CAUSE SHE'S ON HER COMPUTER.

UM, MOST OF THEM DO NOT REQUIRE, UM, BUT THEY'RE, THE GREAT MAJORITY OF THEM ARE CIRCULATION SPECIALISTS AND PUBLIC SERVICE SPECIALISTS.

SO CIRCULATION SPECIALISTS, THE MINIMAL REQUIREMENT IS A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND SOME CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE.

SO THOSE ARE OUR FRONTLINE, YOU KNOW, THE CLERKS CHECKING OUT BOOKS AND WHATNOT.

UM, AND THEN OUR PUBLIC SERVICE SPECIALISTS, THEN THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT QUALIFICATIONS.

A BACHELOR'S DEGREE OR IT CAN BE AN AA WITH A, YOU KNOW, CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS OF EXPERIENCE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE, WHETHER IT'S RETAIL OR SOMEWHERE ELSE.

SO WE'RE PRETTY FLEXIBLE.

UM, THAT'S HOW WE GET REALLY THE DIVERSITY OF SKILLS THAT OUR STAFF HAVE.

AND WE REALLY ARE LOOKING FOR A DIVERSITY OF SKILLS.

I MEAN, THAT'S HOW WE GET OUR MUSIC INSTRUCTORS, OUR ART INSTRUCTORS, YOU KNOW, SOMEBODY THAT'S TEACHING SEWING UPSTAIRS.

YOU KNOW, ALL OF THOSE SKILLS THAT ARE BEYOND LIBRARIES.

'CAUSE WE CAN TEACH YOU HOW TO WORK IN A LIBRARY, BUT WE'RE REALLY LOOKING FOR THOSE SPECIAL SKILLS THAT YOU CAN BRING TO US AND THEN WE CAN TURN INTO A PROGRAM FOR THE PUBLIC.

I THOUGHT IT WAS SO INTERESTING TO LEARN ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO, WHICH I, ANYWAY, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT EVERY LIBRARY IS NOT RUN BY A LIBRARIAN IN HERE.

IN DALLAS.

IN DALLAS, NO.

AND OUR BRANCHES, EVERY BUILDING DOESN'T HAVE A LIBRARIAN AS THE MANAGER.

RIGHT.

IT'S, THERE IS A LIBRARIAN IN EVERY BUILDING.

THAT PERSON'S NOT RUNNING THE BUILDING.

RIGHT, RIGHT.

WE HIRED SOMEBODY ELSE WITH BUSINESS SKILLS AND ALL THAT.

RIGHT.

THAT'S MANAGING THAT PARTICULAR, WE GET QUITE A FEW PEOPLE THAT HAVE SOCIAL WORK BACKGROUNDS.

IT'S VERY INTERESTING.

THAT IS INTERESTING.

I CAN SEE THAT.

BUT IT'S A, IT'S A GREAT MATCH FOR US, RIGHT.

WE GET A LOT OF, A LOT OF THAT.

AND IT, IT GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY.

WE HAD MANY STAFF WHO HAVE MASTER'S DEGREES IN OTHER FIELDS WHO HAD BEEN WORKING FOR THE LIBRARY FOR MANY, MANY YEARS.

THEY HAD NO OPPORTUNITY TO PROMOTE BECAUSE WE REQUIRED THAT LIBRARY SCIENCE DEGREE.

EXACTLY.

WE CHANGED IT.

THAT'S, WE WERE ABLE TO PROMOTE LIKE OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, I HAVE THREE PEOPLE RIGHT AWAY YEAH.

THAT

[00:55:01]

ARE DOING GREAT.

AND STILL IN THEIR POSITIONS.

HEATHER? UH, THERE ARE FOUR LIBRARIANS.

HOW MANY? FOUR.

FOUR.

AND AND ACTUALLY THREE OF THEM WOULD BE IN OUR ACQUISITIONS AND CATALOGING STAFF.

SO IT'S JUST ONE PUBLIC SERVICE LIBRARIAN.

THANK YOU.

IT GOES BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE JUST SAYING, RIGHT? PEOPLE WITH OTHER SKILLS, OTHER SKILLS NOT MARRYING THE LIBRARIAN.

THAT'S RIGHT.

SHE DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE.

WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE SHUSHING PEOPLE .

WE WANT THE LIBRARY OUT LOUD.

SO THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME JUMP BACK IN.

.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? MAYOR? SO, SO THE, THE BOND ELECTION WILL BE IN MAY OF 2024.

WE DON'T KNOW YET, BUT OKAY.

WHO DECIDES AND WHICH ONE WOULD BE BETTER? THE CITY COUNCIL DECIDES, UM, AND THEY'RE TOSS UPS FOR EITHER DATES.

OKAY.

UM, SO MAY OF COURSE IS SOONER, BUT IT COSTS US TO DO AN ELECTION AND IT'S, IT'S, AND IN NOVEMBER IT'S ALREADY AN ELECTION CYCLE AND MORE PEOPLE WILL LIKELY MORE PEOPLE WILL COME OUT TO VOTE IF THERE'S MORE ON THE BALLOT THAN JUST THE BOND.

SO THEY GET PEOPLE WHO ARE EXTREMELY PASSIONATE FOR OR AGAINST.

RIGHT, EXACTLY.

NOVEMBER, RIGHT? A CIRCUS.

YEAH.

SO, AND THAT WILL BE DESIGNED BY .

THAT'S RIGHT.

SO WE'RE, WE'RE STAYING OUT OF THAT.

THEY'VE TALKED ABOUT IT A LOT ALREADY, BUT I DON'T THINK THEY'RE, THEY HAVE NOT MADE A DECISION TO MY KNOWLEDGE.

.

YEAH, BUT IT'S COSTLY.

IT'S COSTLY.

IF, IF YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE ON THE BALLOT AND YOU USUALLY GET SUCH A LOW PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE.

WELL, IN THE LAST ELECTION THEY ONLY HAD 6% TURNOUT.

AND THAT WAS THE COUNCIL MEMBER AND MAYOR ORAL ELECTION.

YES.

IT'S P WE GOTTA GET PEOPLE OUT TO VOTE 6%.

PRETTY SAD.

ALRIGHTY.

OKAY.

WELL WE'RE RIGHT AT 4 59.

WE'RE RIGHT, WE'RE RIGHT ON SCHEDULE AT US .

WE DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS.

UH, COULD I GET UM, A MOTION TO ADJOURN? ADJOURN.

I, I MAKE A MOTION TO ADJOURN THE VERDICT.

MOVED IN SECOND TO ADJOURN.

ARE THERE ANY OPPOSITIONS TO ADJOURNING THE MEETING BOARD TODAY, THEN THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD FOR SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2020 4, 4 59 AS AJOUR.

THANK YOU ALL.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.
