UM,

[Municipal Library Board Meeting on November 14, 2023.]

IT'S NOVEMBER 14TH, 2023.

WE WERE GOING TO BEGIN OUR MEETING WITH INTRODUCTIONS, AND WE HAVE A NEW MEMBER, DAN TATUM, APPOINTED BY KAREN MENDELSON IN DISTRICT 12.

YES.

AND I WANTED EVERYBODY TO HAVE A CHANCE TO HEAR A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DAN.

SO DAN, IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND JUST SHARING A LITTLE BIT, WE'LL DO JUST A QUICK AROUND THE HORN SO YOU GET TO .

I'LL START TALKING.

YOU MAY HAVE TO TELL ME TO SHUT UP.

.

I AM, UH, AN ATTORNEY.

I'VE BEEN IN PRACTICE FOR 34 YEARS.

UM, I, MOST OF MY LIFE LIVED IN FORT WORTH, BORN AND RAISED IN FORT WORTH, AND LIVED THERE UNTIL 12 YEARS AGO.

I CAME OVER TO DALLAS FOR A JOB IN, UH, 2010 OR, AND THE JOB WENT AWAY, BUT I STAYED FOR LOVE.

I, I, I TOOK UP WITH THAT, ACTUALLY AN OLD HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATE OF MINE.

SO WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 12 YEARS NOW.

UH, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I DID WHEN I CAME TO DALLAS WAS I STARTED DOING, UH, VOLUNTEER ADULT LITERACY TEACHERS WITH AN ORGANIZATION CALLED LIFT LITERACY INSTRUCTION FOR TEXAS.

AND I'VE BEEN DOING THAT EVER SINCE.

LEADING AND WRITING GIVES ME MY LIVELIHOOD.

SO I, AND IT'S ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT TO ME.

I HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO, UH, GROW UP IN A FAMILY THAT VALUED LEARNING AND A, AND A HOUSE FULL OF BOOKS.

UH, AND I, I STILL AM ADDICTED TO BOOKS, UM, DRIVES MARTHA CRAZY, BUT, YOU KNOW, THAT'S HOW IT IS.

UH, AND I, I FELT LIKE GIVING BACK THAT, UH, ABILITY TO READ AND WRITE WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST WAYS I COULD HELP A COMMUNITY, AND I'M STILL DOING IT.

UH, LYFT RECENTLY MERGED WITH THE A BIRD CENTER FOR LITERACY AND ASPIRE, ASPIRE TO LEARN.

AND, UH, SINCE COVID WE'RE MOSTLY ONLINE, I MISS THOSE OLD DAYS IN THE CLASSROOM.

UM, I GOT TO KNOW KARA MENDELSON THROUGH SOME OF MY OWN SORT OF PERSONAL PROBLEMS WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THINGS GOING ON, AS PEOPLE OFTEN DO.

AND SHE AND I HAVE BEEN, BEEN CLOSE AND, AND IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE, UH, I, I PRACTICE BY MYSELF, SO MY SCHEDULE'S VERY FLEXIBLE.

I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT TO DO, AND KARA WOULD CALL EITHER MARTHA OR I TO HELP HER WITH CERTAIN THINGS THAT SHE MAYBE COULDN'T DO HERSELF.

AND WE WERE AT MEETING THE OTHER, UH, A FEW MONTHS AGO, AND SHE MENTIONED THAT THIS WAS VACANT CRIES.

IT'S NOT LIKE THE THING FOR ME, SO I TOLD HER I'D DO IT, AND IT TOOK A LITTLE WHILE, BUT HERE I AM AND I'M DELIGHTED TO BE HERE.

WHAT'S, WHAT'S A FAVORITE BOOK OF, OH, GOSH.

UM, WELL, THE LOADED QUESTION.

FAVORITE.

A FAVORITE? WELL, I, I READ A LOT.

I, I'VE USUALLY GOT ABOUT THREE OR FOUR GOING AT ONCE, ONCE, BUT I, I READ A LOT OF NON-FICTION, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO FICTION, I, I LIKE HISTORICAL FICTION.

LIKE, UM, WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE AND THE, AND THE YEARS AFTER THAT, I, I SPENT A LOT OF TIME READING THE FLASHING BOOKS BY GEORGE MCDONALD FRAZIER.

UM, AND THEN AFTER THAT, I GOT TURNED ONTO THE AUBREY AND, UH, AUBREY MA SERIES BY PATRICK O'BRIEN.

AND, UH, I, THAT'S A, A SERIES OF 20 BOOKS.

I HAVE TO ADMIT.

I'VE BEEN THROUGH THE SERIES PROBABLY THREE TIMES NOW, .

UM, BUT THAT'S, THOSE ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITES.

AND THEN, UH, POETRY, I, I LIKE POETRY A LOT.

I, ROBERT FROST IS A BIG FAVORITE OF MINE, AND OFTENTIMES I'LL TURN TO HIS POEMS FOR, UH, SOLACE.

UM, SEE, I DON'T KNOW.

I BETTER SHUT IT.

THAT'S GREAT.

.

THAT'S, THANK YOU.

WELL, WHY DON'T WE DO A QUICK AROUND THE HORN.

IF YOU JUST INTRODUCE YOURSELF, WHICH DISTRICT YOU'RE IN, UM, THE TABLE, TABLE FIRST AND MAYBE A FAVOR.

DONNA DENNISON, DISTRICT 14, AND GREW UP IN DALLAS LIBRARY'S ALWAYS BEEN PART OF MY, MY CHILDREN AND NOW MY GRANDCHILDREN.

.

I SERVE ON THE BOARD OF THE FRIENDS OF THE NORTH OAK CLIFF LIBRARY.

AND I TOO, LIKE HISTORICAL FICTION.

UH, MY FAVORITE, UH,

[00:05:01]

ALL TIME BOOK IS SEVENTH TIME.

NOW.

I, I READ THAT A COUPLE TIMES MYSELF, FIND SEVEN AS I DID ON TIME.

SAM STAGGS, UH, FROM DISTRICT EIGHT.

AND WHAT I'M READING RIGHT NOW IS A MEMOIR BY THE LATE ZOE CALDWELL, AN INCREDIBLY WONDERFUL ACTRESS.

THE MEMOIR IS CALLED I WILL BE CLEOPATRA, AND SHE WAS .

NICE.

AND YOU'RE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR? YEAH.

.

HUMBLE.

YES.

HUMBLE.

JOE.

JOE , LIBRARY DIRECTOR.

OH, AND I NEVER HAVE A FAVORITE BOOK.

YEAH.

ONE I'M READING TODAY, BUT I WILL FESS UP THAT I KNOW DAN, UM, HIS HUSBAND.

MY HUSBAND IS IN ROTARY WITH HIM, SO I'M REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE A FRIEND ON BOARD TOO.

NOT THAT Y'ALL AREN'T FRIENDS.

.

ALRIGHT.

SO YOU'LL HAVE TO CALL ON PATTY.

YOU WANNA JUMP? YEAH.

PATTY.

KI REPRESENT DISTRICT 10.

I RETIRED AFTER 25 YEARS WITH THE DALLAS LIBRARY, WITH THE DALLAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

UM, I'M ON THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOARD AND HAVE BEEN ON THIS BOARD SEVERAL.

UH, MY, THE BOOK I JUST FINISHED READING WAS SQUEEZE ME BY CARL HYON, AND I READ THAT FOR MY BOOK CLUB.

AND I ALSO AM ON THE BOARDS FOR HAMPTON, ILLINOIS AND OAKLAWN LIBRARY FRANCE.

THANK YOU, HEATHER.

WHOOP, YOU'RE, YOU'RE MUTED.

WE'RE STILL NOT HEARING IT.

ALRIGHT.

NO.

SOUND FROM MUTE TODAY.

OH, HEATHER, WE'RE NOT GETTING YOU.

UH, WHOOP.

WHY DON'T WE TRY? YOU, LET'S, LET'S RUN THROUGH OUR OTHER FRIENDS UP THERE.

KIRSTEN.

HI, KIRSTEN NIELSEN.

I'M THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE FOR THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

AND IF YOU ASK ME MY FAVORITE BOOK, IT'S PROBABLY FROM THE MIXUP FILES OF MRS. BALY, FRANK WEILER.

I READ IT MANY, MANY YEARS AGO.

STILL REREAD IT EVERY COUPLE YEARS.

JUST LOVE IT.

UM, SO YEAH, MELISSA.

HI.

I AM MELISSA D I'M THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE LIBRARY.

UM, MY FAVORITE BOOK IS THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE BY LAURIE KING.

GONNA HAVE SOME GOOD LIST TO ANSWER.

, UH, HEATHER THE OTHER.

HEATHER THE HEATHER, THE OTHER HEATHER.

UH, I AM, HI, I AM HEATHER LOWE.

I'M ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR, UH, TECHNOLOGY AND STRATEGIC DIRECTION.

THIS IS ACTUALLY AN IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION.

MM-HMM, .

UM, THANK YOU.

THE LAST, HMM.

I JUST FINISHED FIGHT NIGHT, UH, AND I AM, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE AUTHOR'S NAME, UH, BUT I THOUGHT IT'S A KIND OF LIKE STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS FROM MY KIDS' PERSPECTIVE THAT IS REALLY DELIGHTFUL.

AND A QUICK READ.

MARY.

HI, UH, I'M MARY LANSKY.

I'M EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR FRIENDS OF THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

I SERVED ON THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD AS WELL A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO, AND I AM, UH, HAPPY TO BE HERE AS A GUEST OF THE BOARD.

[00:10:01]

AND CAN'T THINK OF A FAVORITE BOOK TO BE HONEST.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.

ALRIGHT.

ASK THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION.

THAT'S RIGHT.

OR VALERIE, EITHER ONE OF YOU ALL WANNA WEIGH IN.

I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'RE LISTENING AT ALL.

NO, THANK YOU ALL.

NO PROBLEM.

ALRIGHT, WELL, DAN, YOU'RE, YOU'RE WITH AUGUST COMPANY HERE, SO WONDERFUL.

WE'RE THRILLED TO HAVE YOU WITH US.

AND IT MIGHT BE, FELICIA HAS INFORMED ME THAT WE HAVE NO PUBLIC SPEAKERS JOINING US TODAY.

SO WE CAN START BY APPROVING THE MINUTES FROM OUR OCTOBER 31ST MEETING.

THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT WE ACTUALLY NEED A, UH, CALL TO, TO A MOTION TO APPROVE.

YOU NEED TO APPROVE.

ALRIGHT, WE HAVE A, A MOTION AND A SECOND.

ANY OBJECTIONS? ANYONE VOTE TO APPROVE? APPROVE WITH A HAND OR A VOICE? ALRIGHT.

OCTOBER 31ST MINUTES ARE VOTED TO APPROVE, VOTED APPROVED.

SO THEN THE, THE CHAIR'S REPORT.

I HAVE NOTHING TO REPORT.

I'M GONNA COME BACK AND, AND PROPOSE THAT WE TRY, UM, THE IDEA OF ROTATING AROUND TO DIFFERENT BRANCHES AT SOME POINT.

BUT, UH, I'M GONNA WAIT UNTIL WE'VE GOT CRITICAL MASS OF FOLKS WHO ARE PHYSICALLY HERE.

UM, SO THAT'LL, THAT'LL COME AROUND AGAIN AT SOME POINT.

SO LET'S JUMP INTO OUR STAFF REPORTS.

JOE, YOU WANNA INTRODUCE US TO? YEAH.

UM, SO TODAY'S EDUCATIONAL, UM, THE PROGRAM IS ABOUT PROGRAMS AND EVENTS AT THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

AND MELISSA DEESE WILL BE PRESENTING THAT.

AND I BELIEVE KRISTEN, BUT I DON'T SEE HER ON SCREEN.

MELISSA, WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THIS WAS ABOUT HOW TO FIND OUT ABOUT PROGRAMS AND EVENTS.

.

WELL, THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE.

SO WE ABSOLVED KRISTEN WILL BE LEAVING IT.

TAKE IT AWAY, MELISSA.

IT'S ALL YOU.

SURE.

SO THE QUESTION CAME UP THAT, UM, HOW, HOW WOULD ONE FIND OUT WHAT IS HAPPENING AT YOUR BRANCH IN PARTICULAR? AND, UM, THE, THE FIRST, THE EASIEST THING, UM, WOULD BE TO VISIT THE BRANCH AND ASK THEM IF THEY HAVE A CALENDAR.

PROBABLY EVERY BRANCH PRINTS OUT A MONTHLY CALENDAR OF EVENTS THAT THEY'VE CREATED.

UM, IF NOT, THEY PROBABLY HAVE A BULLETIN BOARD WITH, UM, LINES AND FLYERS AND SIGNS THAT ADVERTISE WHAT IS COMING UP IN THE BUILDING.

BUT IF YOU WANNA KNOW BEFORE YOU GO, THEN I WOULD SUGGEST VISITING OUR, OUR ONLINE CALENDAR.

AND I'M GONNA TRY TO SHARE MY SCREEN TO SHOW YOU HOW IT WORKS, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE MOST USER-FRIENDLY ONLINE CALENDAR.

YEAH.

, .

WE ALL AGREE.

OKAY.

SO , SO WHEN YOU VISIT, WHEN YOU VISIT OUR WEBSITE, UM, YOU'LL SEE HERE UP ALONG THE TOP, UM, THE TOP RIBBON, THERE'S A LINK FOR EVENTS AND THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO AN EXTERNAL SITE THAT IS THE LIBRARY CALENDAR.

UM, WHEN YOU CLICK ON IT, SINCE I USE IT ALL THE TIME, I'M KIND OF ALREADY LOGGED INTO IT.

WHEN YOU LOG INTO IT, YOU'LL PROBABLY GET THIS SCREEN THAT WILL POP UP AND, UM, YOU KNOW, AND IT WILL ASK YOU TO CHOOSE WHICH BRANCH YOU, WHICH BRANCH YOU WANT.

AND SO YOU CAN SELECT ALL, WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE.

UM, BUT THEN IF YOU ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN, I, YOU KNOW, YOU ONLY WANNA KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE CENTRAL LIBRARY, YOU CAN JUST, YOU CAN CHOOSE THAT.

OR IF YOU ONLY WANTED TO KNOW, UM, WHAT ONLINE PROGRAMS WERE HAPPENING, WHICH, YOU KNOW, ONCE UPON A TIME, THAT WAS ALL OF 'EM, OF COURSE, BUT NOW THERE'S NOT MANY, UM, YOU KNOW, YOU COULD CHOOSE THAT.

AND SO THEN THAT, UM, AUTOMATICALLY LIMITS WHAT, WHAT YOU'LL SEE ON THE CALENDAR.

AND YOU REALLY DO WANT TO LIMIT IT IF YOU CAN, BECAUSE WE HAVE A BAJILLION THINGS HAPPENING.

AND, UM, AND LIMITING THE CALENDAR WILL HELP.

UM, SO I ALWAYS LOOK AT IT AT THE MONTH VIEW, BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT YOU CAN, YOU CAN CHOOSE BY WEEK OR BY DAY.

UM, WE TRY TO FEATURE SOME OF

[00:15:01]

OUR BIGGER EVENTS UP HERE ON THE TOP.

UM, SO THAT, YOU KNOW, THINGS THAT WE'RE HIGHLIGHTING.

UM, ANOTHER THING I WANT TO SHOW YOU.

AND SO, SO LET'S SAY THAT WE DO HAVE, WE DID SELECT ALL, AND OF COURSE IT WILL TAKE FOREVER FOR IT TO LOAD ALL OF OUR EVENTS.

UM, BUT THEN IT, BUT THEN IT GIVES YOU FILTERS HERE ON THE LEFT.

AND SO IF YOU, YOU KNOW, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO TAKE YOUR KIDS TO OR TAKE YOUR GRANDKIDS TO, UM, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT'S SPECIFICALLY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS, UM, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN LIMIT THAT THERE.

UM, YOU CAN ALSO LIMIT BY, YOU KNOW, YOU ONLY WANT PROGRAMS THAT ARE IN SPANISH, OR YOU WANT TO SEE WHERE ALL OF THE GED CLASSES ARE.

UM, AND THEN IT GIVES YOU ANOTHER OPTION TO LIMIT BY BRANCH AGAIN.

SO, UM, THE KEYWORD SEARCH WORKS OKAY, , ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A REALLY GOOD KEYWORD, LIKE STORY TIME, FOR EXAMPLE, THAT IT WILL, IT WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD FILTER OF, OF JUST THE STORY TIME.

UM, YOU KNOW, IF YOU LOOKED UP, YOU KNOW, NEXT MONTH IF YOU LOOKED UP SOMETHING LIKE HOLIDAY OR SANTA, YOU KNOW, YOU WOULD GET SOME PRETTY GOOD RESULTS.

UM, BUT IF YOU DON'T, IF YOU'RE NOT SURE OF EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR, THE OTHER FILTERS BY FILTERING BY BRANCH, UM, WILL ACTUALLY, WILL ACTUALLY WORK A BIT BETTER FOR YOU.

UM, SO THE, THE, UM, THE OTHER THING THAT'S WORTH MENTIONING, UM, IS NEXTDOOR, IF YOU ARE, UM, IF YOU ARE NOT SIGNED UP ON THE NEXTDOOR APP, EVERY, EVERY LIBRARY BRANCH POSTS AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK ON NEXTDOOR ABOUT UPCOMING EVENTS.

AND, UM, WE REALLY FOCUS ON, WE REALLY FOCUS ON NEXTDOOR AND, UM, AND CALENDARS BECAUSE THAT IS SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, EACH BRANCH CAN, CAN MANAGE ON THEIR OWN AND THEY CAN KEEP THAT INFORMATION GOING OUT.

AND, UM, THOSE ARE THE, THOSE ARE THE BEST WAYS TO, THOSE ARE THE BEST WAYS TO FOLLOW, TO FOLLOW WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, NEXT DOOR, IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR IS, YOU KNOW, IT, IT ONLY SHOWS YOU WHAT IS IT HAPPENING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

SO IT WILL ONLY SHOW YOU WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE, AT THAT BRANCH THAT IS, THAT IS SERVING THAT NEIGHBORHOOD.

UM, SO, UH, THE OTHER THING THAT WE'VE REALLY FOUND SINCE C-O-V-I-D IS THAT E-BLASTS AND EMAIL NEWSLETTERS ARE, ARE VERY EFFECTIVE.

'CAUSE WE DO KNOW THAT WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE MAILING LISTS OF KNOWN LIBRARY USERS.

SO, UM, WE HAVE OUR, OUR, UH, DPL NOW IS OUR BIWEEKLY E-BLAST THAT GOES TO EVERYBODY WHOSE EMAIL ADDRESS THAT WE HAVE.

UM, AND THEN WE HAVE A SMART KIDS E-BLAST THAT GOES OUT EVERY OTHER WEEK, UM, SPECIFICALLY TO A LIST THAT IS, UM, TEACHERS, UM, PROBABLY SOME KIDS THEMSELVES IF THEY'VE SIGNED UP FOR SUMMER READING WITH THEIR OWN PERSONAL EMAIL.

UM, BUT THEN, UM, BUT THEN WE HAVE SOME OTHER LIKE, SPECIFIC INTEREST EMAILS THAT GO OUT.

THERE'S LIKE, THERE'S A MONTHLY ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT EMAIL THAT GOES OUT THAT IS ALL LIKE, YOU KNOW, ARTS RELATED PROGRAMMING HAPPENING AT THE LIBRARY.

UM, THERE'S, WE'RE ABOUT TO RESTART OUR, OUR GARDENING AND NATURE E-BLAST THAT GOES OUT.

UM, THAT'LL GO OUT ONCE A MONTH.

UM, BUT THEN BEYOND THAT, THE BRANCHES, SOME OF THE BRANCHES HAVE THEIR OWN MAILING LIST AND THEY WILL DO THEIR OWN E-BLAST ONCE A MONTH.

UM, I SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT A LIST OF WHICH ONES THOSE ARE.

UM, BUT YOU CAN DEFINITELY GO ONTO, UH, THE WEBSITE AND SIGN UP FOR THE NEWSLETTERS THAT YOU WANT TO, THAT YOU WANT TO RECEIVE.

UM, AND SO I DON'T, I'M NOT SURE IF

[00:20:01]

THAT ANSWERS THE QUESTION THAT I WAS BROUGHT IN TO, TO, UH, YOU GOT, YOU GOT A COUPLE QUESTIONS COMING YOUR WAY ANYWAY.

GREAT.

GREAT.

HEATHER, HEATHER HAD HER HAND UP FIRST.

AND THEN ANN, SORRY, TOM, I TOOK OVER.

OH, AND SORRY I WASN'T AVAILABLE EARLIER.

I WAS TRYING REALLY HARD TO GET OFF OF MY OTHER VIRTUAL MEETING THAT WENT LATE.

UM, HEATHER HORNER, DISTRICT SEVEN, UM, I DIDN'T HAVE A QUESTION, BUT THE ONE THING I DID LIKE ABOUT NEXTDOOR, UM, IS THAT YOU CAN NOT ONLY POST TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT THERE IS A SELECTION THAT YOU CAN SELECT SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS.

SO GIVEN, GIVEN THAT OUR PUBLIC LIBRARIES OFTEN SERVE MULTIPLE NEIGHBORHOODS, I DID LIKE THAT FEATURE.

SO WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING IS KIND OF REPOSTING AND RESHARING FROM MY LIBRARIES AS I COME ACROSS THEM SO I CAN SHARE THEM TO A WIDER AUDIENCE JUST BECAUSE, UM, LIKE MY SPECIFIC LIBRARY, UM, SERVES SEVERAL NEIGHBORHOODS IN A, IN A PRETTY LARGE, UH, NEIGHBORHOOD, UH, SORRY AREA.

SO THAT'S, ANYWAY, I JUST WANNA SAY I LIKE THAT FEATURE OF NEXTDOOR AND THAT'S WHAT I TRY TO DO ALSO, IS TO TRY TO MAKE SURE TO SHARE IT WITH OTHER LIBRARIES TOO.

ESPECIALLY THE EVENTS, YOU KNOW, WHAT MAY BE HAPPENING AT ONE D SEVEN LIBRARY, UM, MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO SOME OF MY OTHER, UH, SOME OF THE OTHER COMMUNITIES THAT I ALSO SERVE.

WE CAN, UM, WE AS IN LIKE MY, MY STAFF THAT ARE CENTRALLY LOCATED CAN POST TO NEXTDOOR ACROSS THE CITY.

SO ANYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING SYSTEM-WIDE, UH, WE PUSH OUT OURSELVES WHILE THE BRANCHES WILL PUSH OUT THEIR, THEIR SPECIFIC, THEIR SPECIFIC EVENTS AND NEWS.

ANN, YOU HAD A QUESTION? UH, SO FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD REALLY LIKE A T-SHIRT THAT SAYS KNOWN LIBRARY USER .

UH, SECOND, UM, I FOLLOW, UH, THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES, INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK.

AND VERY OFTEN YOU WILL POST REALLY INTERESTING EVENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, BUT WHEN I CLICK THE LINK, INSTEAD OF TAKING ME TO A PAGE THAT TALKS ABOUT THE EVENT, IT GOES TO THAT GENERIC PAGE OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT BRANCHES.

HMM.

AND I, I DON'T AL ALWAYS KNOW FROM THE, I MEAN, YOU HAVE THIS CUTE GRAPHIC THAT SAYS THIS WEEK AT THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY THAT IT DOESN'T SAY WHAT BRANCH.

AND SO WHEN I GET TO THAT PAGE, IT SAYS WHAT BRANCH YOU WANNA LOOK AT? I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO.

HMM.

SO I DON'T KNOW IF WE COULD INCLUDE THE BRANCHES ON THE, THIS WEEK AT THE LIBRARY, OR THERE'S SOME WAY TO LIKE ACTUALLY LINK TO THE EVENTS, OR I ASSUME I'M NOT DOING THIS WRONG, BUT NO, YOU'RE NOT.

I GET REALLY INTERESTED IN AN EVENT, BUT THEN I, I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE.

SO I GET A LITTLE FRUSTRATED AND I'M LIKE, WELL, THAT SOUNDED FUN, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIND IT IN 30 BRANCHES.

SO I GUESS I WON'T GO.

THAT'S A REALLY, THAT'S A REALLY GOOD TIP.

UM, AND I'M NOT SURE, I'LL SEE IF THERE'S A WORKAROUND AROUND FOR IT.

I'M, I'M AFRAID IT MIGHT BE A FEATURE OF OUR CATALOG, BUT LET ME SEE WHAT I CAN DO.

WELL, I MEAN, I THINK IT WOULD, EVEN IF YOU JUST IN THE GRAPHIC THAT SAID, YOU KNOW, THIS, WE, AT THE LIBRARY, THERE'S FOUR OR FIVE DIFFERENT EVENTS IF YOU JUST PUT REALLY SMALL MAHJONG IS AT PRESTON ROYAL OR WHEREVER.

YEAH.

OKAY.

OR MAYBE THEY'RE AT MULTIPLE LIBRARIES AND I JUST DON'T KNOW, STAN, YOU HAVE A QUESTION? YES.

UM, SO WE'VE GOT A DESIGNATED PERSON AT EACH BRANCH THAT HANDLES NEXT DOOR MANAGER DOES.

OKAY.

UM, THE OTHER THING IS, CAN WE MEASURE EFFECTIVENESS ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS? UM, WELL THAT'S A, THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.

UM, OUR, OUR SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER ACTUALLY JUST FINISHED AN AUDIT OF OUR, UH, OF OUR SOCIAL MEDIA OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS.

UM, YOU KNOW, LOOKING AT ENGAGEMENT RATE, UM, AND WHERE WE COULD, WHERE WE COULD IMPROVE, UM, OR WE GET THE, IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, WE GET THE BEST ENGAGEMENT RATE ON INSTAGRAM OF ALL OF THE CHANNELS THAT WE'RE ON.

UM, AND, YOU KNOW, SHE DUG INTO IT FURTHER TO SEE, YOU KNOW, WHAT KINDS OF POSTS GOT, WHAT LEVELS

[00:25:01]

OF ENGAGEMENT.

UM, BUT, YOU KNOW, BUT, AND SO THAT'S ONE, YOU KNOW, THAT'S REALLY KIND OF ALL WE HAVE WHEN IT COMES TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO LOOK AT WHAT'S EFFECTIVE.

UM, ONE THING I WISH I WAS ABLE TO MEASURE THAT, OH, WE POSTED ABOUT USING, UM, YOU KNOW, HOMEWORK HELP NOW, AND THERE WAS A 10% INCREASE IN USERS ON HOMEWORK HELP NOW.

AND, UH, YOU KNOW, WE JUST DON'T HAVE, WE JUST DON'T HAVE THE BANDWIDTH TO TRY TO MEASURE THAT KIND OF, UH, THAT KIND OF EFFECTIVENESS.

UM, BUT ONE THING THAT, ONE THING THAT I DO KNOW IS FROM, YOU KNOW, I MENTIONED OUR E-BLASTS AND WE ABSOLUTELY NOTICE WHEN WE FEATURE AN EVENT IN OUR E-BLAST, THAT REGISTRATION IMMEDIATELY INCREASES WITHIN THE NEXT, YOU KNOW, DAY OR TWO OF THE E-BLAST GOING OUT.

AND SO, UM, SO THAT'S, THAT IS ANOTHER REASON WHY WE PUT A LOT OF FOCUS ON THOSE E-BLASTS AND OUR, UH, YOU KNOW, KLS KNOWN LIBRARY USERS.

.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FROM MELISSA? OH, WE'VE GOT ONE HERE.

OH, SO, SO EVERYONE WHO HAS A LIBRARY CARD, I ASSUME HAS AN EMAIL ADDRESS CONNECTED WITH IT, SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR DPL NOW.

IT JUST, IT JUST COMES TO EVERYONE WHO HAS A LIBRARY CARD.

UM, NOT NECESSARILY, UM, DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU SIGNED UP AND WHEN YOU GAVE US YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, WE MAY OR MAY NOT.

YEAH.

WE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE IT.

UM, SO IF, IF YOU AREN'T GETTING IT, YOU KNOW, IT DOESN'T HURT TO THEN GO IN AND SIGN UP AGAIN, THE SYSTEM WE DO TRY, YEAH, WE DO TRY AND UPDATE THAT INFORMATION AT RENEWAL, BUT RENEWALS ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS.

SO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS.

YEAH.

SO, SO WHAT WAS, WHAT WAS THE DATE WHEN YOU, THAT YOU STARTED THAT YOU STARTED PEOPLE WHO SIGNED UP IN THE, THE EIGHTIES OR ? OH GOSH.

IN 2010.

I, YEAH, I DON'T, 2000, I DON'T KNOW.

I WOULD SAY, I WOULD SAY SIGN UP, YOU KNOW, DON'T ASSUME THAT YOU'RE SIGNED UP.

SO GO TO THE, FOR THE E-BLAST.

YEAH.

YOU CAN GO TO THE WEBSITE AND SIGN UP.

GO TO THE WEBSITE, ALSO OPT OUT.

YES, IT DOES HAVE THE OPTION TO OPT OUT.

WE, WE DO ERR ON THE SIDE OF IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO OPT OUT.

WHEN WE DO, WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR A LIBRARY CARD, WE DO SIGN YOU UP, BUT YOU, YOU, YOU HAVE TO TELL US TO STOP.

YOU DON'T WANT IT ANYMORE.

SECOND, ANY OTHER QUESTION? THANKS MELISSA.

THAT WAS AWESOME.

VERY HELPFUL, JOE.

I DID ASK MELISSA TO STAY ON JUST IN CASE TODAY, NOT TO GO AWAY, .

UM, OKAY.

SO BEST NEWS IS OUR JOB FAIR ON NOVEMBER TWO AND THREE OF LAST WEEK WITH A RAGING SUCCESS.

WE HAD 312 APPLICANTS FOR A LITTLE OVER, WELL, A LITTLE OVER 70 PLUS POSITIONS.

WE ACTUALLY DID, UM, OPEN IT UP FOR INTERNAL PROMOTIONS AND LATERAL TRANSFERS AS WELL.

AND SO AT THE END OF THE DAY WE'RE, WE'RE MOVING AROUND ABOUT 125 PEOPLE .

SO WHETHER IT'S A PROMOTION FILLING AND, AND SO IT'S A, IT'S A BIG OLD SPIDER WEB.

I DON'T KNOW HOW KIRSTEN AND VALERIE KEEP IT STRAIGHT, BUT IT'S KIRSTEN AND VALERIE KEEPING IT ALL STRAIGHT , NOT ME.

SO THAT WAS WONDERFUL.

SO, SO DO WE CHIP AWAY AT THE 70 OPENINGS? OH, 125 FOLKS MORE THAN ENOUGH TO FILL OUR NEEDS.

SO, UM, YEAH, IT ALWAYS WORKS OUT THAT WAY.

WE ACTUALLY WERE REFERRING PEOPLE TO THE CITY OF DALLAS JOB FAIR THAT WAS HAPPENING AFTER HOURS FOR FOLKS THAT WEREN'T A GOOD FIT FOR THE LIBRARY.

OR MAYBE WE DIDN'T, UM, NO, THAT'S THE, THAT'S THE BIG NUMBER AND I JUST MENTIONED THAT BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, OVER 70 VACANCIES TO FILL NUMBER ONE IS A BIG NUMBER.

SURE.

AND WE DID THAT LAST YEAR, SO WE THOUGHT WE HAD IT DOWN PRETTY WELL, BUT THEN TO DO THE INTERNAL STUFF AS WELL, AND IT'S JUST THE NUMBER JUST KEEPS GOING UP.

I, I

[00:30:01]

UNDERSTAND.

SO THE DOMINO EFFECT.

YES.

YEAH.

BUT WE LOVE FROM PROMOTING FROM WITHIN, OF COURSE.

UM, ALSO ON NOVEMBER 2ND I DID INTERVIEWS WITH A PANEL OF OTHER LIBRARY, OTHER CITY OF DEPARTMENT DIRECTORS AND ASSISTANT DIRECTORS FOR OUR VACANT ASSISTANT DIRECTOR POSITION, WHICH IS OPERATIONS AND FACILITIES.

UM, SO WE HAD FIVE INTERNAL CANDIDATES FROM THE CITY OF DALLAS, NOT BY, BY ABSOLUTE CHANCE, THOSE WERE THE TOP APPLICANTS BECAUSE WE DID HAVE APPLICANTS FROM OUTSIDE THE CITY.

THOSE JUST HAPPENED TO BE THE ONES THAT WERE BEST QUALIFIED.

UM, WE NARROWED THAT DOWN TO THE TOP TWO.

AND THEN THE TOP TWO CANDIDATES DID AN INFORMAL Q AND A SESSION WITH ALL OF THE DIRECT AND INDIRECT REPORTS THAT REPORT TO THAT POSITION THIS PAST TUESDAY.

SO THE FOLKS REPORTING TO THAT POSITION HAD A VOICE IN THE NEXT HIRE.

IT WORKED OUT TO MY ADVANTAGE.

I WAS GOING INTO IT WITH A PARTICULAR WISH, ONE THAT I LIKED BETTER, BUT DIDN'T LET ANYBODY KNOW.

AND, BUT THE STAFF ENDED UP CHOOSING THE SAME PERSON.

SO YAY .

AND THAT'S IN THE PROCESS.

SO IT HAS GONE TO DO THE CITY MANAGER, UH, FOR APPROVAL.

HE HAS APPROVED THE HIRE.

UM, IT'S NOW WITH HR.

UM, SO THE OFFER HASN'T GONE OUT TO THE INDIVIDUAL YET, SO I CAN'T MENTION ANY NAMES, BUT WE'RE HOPING THAT THAT PERSON WILL, UM, STEP INTO THAT POSITION MAYBE SHORTLY AFTER THANKSGIVING, FINGERS CROSSED.

UM, AND THAT LEADS ME TO, YOU KNOW, WITH THE BUDGET THIS YEAR, WITH THESE ADDITIONAL NEW POSITIONS, WE WILL BE OPENING THOSE 15 LOCATIONS SIX DAYS A WEEK TO MATCH THE LOCATIONS THAT ARE ALREADY OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK AND, AND WE DON'T.

SO IN JANUARY, WELL, AND THAT'S WHERE I WAS GOING WITH THIS IS YES, IT WILL HAPPEN IN JANUARY.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT DATE IN JANUARY BECAUSE IT'S ALL CONTINGENT ON THIS ONBOARDING PROCESS BECAUSE WE CAN'T OPEN UNLESS WE HAVE THE PEOPLE IN PLACE IN.

SO WE'RE FEVERISHLY WORKING TO GET EVERYONE ONBOARDED AND TRAINED SO THAT WE HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO BE OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK.

SO THAT, THAT'S IT.

THIS PAST YEAR OR THIS YEAR? THIS PAST FISCAL YEAR.

THIS YEAR IT HAPPENED RIGHT AFTER THE MLK HOLIDAY AND WE ARE VERY MUCH GEARING UP FOR THAT AGAIN, BUT NOT A GUARANTEE YET UNTIL WE GET EVERYBODY ON BOARD.

SO, BUT I WOULD SAY THAT MID-JANUARY TIME IS WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN.

UH, WE ALSO HAD, IT WAS A BUSY WEEK LAST WEEK AND WE HAD OUR LISTENING SESSIONS AS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC ONGOING STRATEGIC PLAN CONSULTANT, UM, AND FACILITIES PLAN STUDY THAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

AND, UM, SAD TO SAY THAT OUR SPANISH ONLY LISTENING SESSION, UM, HAD ZERO PEOPLE LOG IN FOR IT.

AND OUR LISTENING SESSION FOR IN ENGLISH HAD 10 PEOPLE LOG ON FOR IT.

SO IT WASN'T A BIG NUMBERS WE WERE HOPING FOR, I FEEL LIKE WITH ALL OF THE CITY MEETINGS THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING RECENTLY AND THE BUDGET AND NOW THE BOND THAT EVERYBODY HAS JUST FRIED, BUT WE'RE MOVING FORWARD AGAIN, WE'RE, WE'RE, THE INFORMATION THAT WAS SHARED IN THE LISTENING SESSION IS VERY MUCH STILL A DRAFT UNTIL IT IS REVIEWED BY THE CITY MANAGER IN EARLY DECEMBER.

AND THEN YOU ALL REVIEW IT IN DECEM ON DECEMBER 12TH.

SO AGAIN, REMINDERS SPECIALLY CALLED MEETING ON DECEMBER 12TH, MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD AND THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY TOGETHER TO SEE THE FIRST DRAFT OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN, STRATEGIC AND FACILITIES PLAN, UH, RESULTS FROM THE CONSULTANT BEFORE WE TAKE IT TO QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE AND IN JANUARY, AND ULTIMATELY COUNSEL FOR APPROVAL IN FEBRUARY.

THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING.

JOE, IS THAT A SPECIALLY CALLED MEETING? IS IT AT FOUR O'CLOCK ALSO? IT IS FOUR O'CLOCK.

IT IS A TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND IT IS ALL ONLINE.

WE WILL NOT BE HERE IN PERSON.

WELL, WE'LL BE, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE .

BUT YEAH, WE, WE'VE TRANSITIONED THAT ONE TO ALL VIRTUAL JUST BECAUSE WE'RE INCLUDING THE FRIENDS AND THE MULTIPLE MEMBERS AND EVERY, WE'LL GIVE EVERYBODY AN OPPORTUNITY TO TUNE IN AND PLUS OUR CONSULTANTS ARE IN CALIFORNIA.

UM, THE LAST THING ON MY LIST IS THE BOND, THE CITY'S

[00:35:01]

BOND, UM, PROCESS.

SO THEY HAVE HAD, THEY HAVE COMPLETED, I BELIEVE ALL OF THEIR PUBLIC MEETINGS ABOUT THE BOND ELECTION THAT'S UPCOMING, THE $1.1 BILLION BOND.

UM, OUR PART OF IT WAS UNDER THE CRITICAL FACILITY SUBCOMMITTEE AND THIS PAST SATURDAY THE SUBCOMMITTEES RECOMMENDED TO THE COMMITTEE, CITIZENS COMMITTEE WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE, WHAT THEY'RE SUGGESTING MOVES FORWARD.

AND WHAT THE SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTED ON THE LIBRARIES WAS, UM, NOT ALL OF OUR PROJECTS.

SO WHERE WE LANDED THE, UH, IS WITH OUR NORTH OAK CLIFF REPLACEMENT, THE PRESTON RURAL RENOVATION AND SOME ADA UPGRADES.

SO RESTROOM UPGRADES AND A FEW LOCATIONS.

THE ONE, THE LAST PROJECT WE WANTED THAT HAS NOW NOT BEEN RECOMMENDED IS THE PARK FOREST REPLACEMENT.

SO AS THESE THINGS GO, IT IS VERY MUCH STILL A MALLEABLE PROCESS.

IT WILL THEN GO TO THE COUNCIL AND THE COUNCIL WILL MAKE CHANGES AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

AND I KNOW THAT COUNCIL MEMBER WILLIS IS VERY, VERY EAGER TO TALK TO HER COLLEAGUES, UM, AND IS WILL BE WORKING TO GET PART FORTH, ADDED BACK TO THE LIST.

SO JOE, WHEN YOU SAY REPLACEMENT, REPLACEMENT, ENTIRE BUILDING.

YEAH.

AND SO FOR DAN AND FOR THOSE, JUST A REMINDER, THE, UM, THE NORTH, WE ALREADY OWN THE LAND WE HAVE SINCE THE 2008 BOND.

SO GOING INTO THIS, WE TOLD WE WERE, WE WERE USING THE ARGUMENT THAT THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN WAITING OVER 20 YEARS.

WE BOUGHT THE LAND, WE NEED TO GIVE THEM WHAT WE PROMISED THEM.

SO ALL THREE OF THOSE, HOWEVER, PRESTON ROYAL, THE COMMUNITY UNDER COUNCILWOMAN GATES HAD, UM, OPTED TO SELL THEIR PIECE OF LAND AND USED THAT FUNDING TOWARDS A RENOVATION INSTEAD OF A REPLACEMENT.

SO THEY HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY IN THE BANK ALREADY WITH THE BOND OFFICE, 3.8 MILLION.

SO WE'RE ASKING FOR MONEY TO SUPPLEMENT THAT TO DO A, A COMPLETE RENOVATION OF THAT BILL.

BUT THEN IF, IF I RECALL CORRECTLY, YOU SAID THAT WHEN A BOND IS PASSED MM-HMM, WITH THAT MONEY THEN IS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE, ULTIMATELY WHATEVER PROJECTS ARE VOTED ON HAVE TO HAPPEN FIRST.

SO WHATEVER PROJECTS ARE VOTED ON.

SO WE WILL SAY, LET'S JUST SAY THESE ARE THE THREE PROJECTS THAT GET VOTED ON.

ONCE THOSE PROJECTS ARE COMPLETED, IF THERE'S ANY MONEY LEFT THAT WAS DESIGNATED FOR THE LIBRARY, IT CAN ONLY BE USED TOWARDS A LIBRARY PROJECT UNLESS CITY COUNCIL GOES IN AND REBOS AND REALLOCATES THE MONEY.

UH, WE WERE ABLE TO BUILD A BRANCH THIS WAY IN IN THE PAST.

WE COBBLED ALL OF THE FUNDS TOGETHER AND MADE IT HAPPEN.

OF COURSE, THINGS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE NOW, BUT, UM, WE HAVE A LOT OF, UH, THOUGHTS AND IDEAS OF HOW WE CAN COLLABORATE, DO PARTNERSHIPS, UM, MIXED USE DEVELOPMENTS, ALL KINDS OF FUN THINGS.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A STANDALONE LIBRARY WHERE WE COULD COST SAVINGS, HAVE SOME COST SAVINGS FOR THE CITY AND HOPEFULLY SAVE SOME MONEY, GET MORE OUT OF THE BOND THAN IS JUST BEING DESCRIBED RIGHT NOW.

SO NOT ALL IS LOST.

NOT ALL IS LOST.

IT'S ALL NEVER, NEVER LOST.

.

YOU KNOW HOW WE LIKE TO PINCH A PENNY AROUND HERE AND IT BEHOOVES YOU TO PINCH A PENNY.

YES.

YEAH, IT DOES.

SO YOU KNOW, WE'RE GONNA, THAT THAT ARGUMENT HAS BEEN MADE TO, UM, WHEN I TALKED WITH COUNCILWOMAN WILLIS AND, AND COUNCIL MEMBER, UM, WEST AT NORTH OAK CLIFFS BRANCH.

AND UM, WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THAT, BUT THERE'S SO MUCH INTEREST IN THE BISHOP ARTS AREA.

IT'S HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT WE WOULD BUILD A STANDALONE LIBRARY.

WE WILL PUT IT OUT FOR MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT, SEE WHAT ELSE WE CAN GET OUT.

THERE'S PROPERTY NEXT DOOR THAT'S BEEN VACANT FOR SOME TIME AND THEY'RE HAVING SOME CODE ISSUES.

SO WE'RE TALKING TO THE PARKS DEPARTMENT MAYBE TO PURCHASE THAT LAND.

AND WE DO SOMETHING REALLY BEAUTIFUL AND NICE IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT IT'S GONNA BE A BIGGER COLLABORATION.

YEAH.

, THE WICKED WEB, WE WEAVE LIBRARY WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A RENOVATION OF ITS HBC SYSTEM.

YEAH.

WILL THAT HAPPENS.

THAT IS STILL HAPPEN.

OKAY, GOOD.

THAT'S UNDER MAJOR MAINTENANCE, WHICH IS A WHOLE NOTHER, IT'S NOT OUR DEPARTMENT,

[00:40:01]

IT'S BUILDING SERVICES.

SO THEY'RE, THEY'RE GETTING MONEY FOR THINGS AS WELL.

AND AS A MATTER OF FACT, WE PROBABLY HAVE LIKE SEVEN THAT NEED HVAC AND THAT'S ACTUALLY ALREADY HAPPENING.

THAT'S PART OF IT.

ALREADY DONE.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE.

FINGERS CROSSED.

FINGERS CROSSED.

WE PUT OUR FAITH IN JOE AND HER CREW.

.

MARY, YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU WANNA SHARE FOR FROM THE FRIENDS? I THINK THERE'S STILL A QUESTION LEFT.

OH YEAH, ACTUALLY NO, I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO REPORT, BUT I WAS GONNA DEFER 'CAUSE THERE IS A QUESTION, PATRICK.

OH, I'M SORRY PATRICK.

OH, UM, WELL WE CAN SKIP IT IF WE MOVED ON.

I WAS, I THE IDEA OF MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT AT A LIBRARY IS SUPER INTERESTING AND I JUST KIND OF WANTED TO, YOU KNOW, IS THERE ANY, HAVE WE DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE OR WOULD THAT BE A TOTALLY NEW SO IT WOULD BE NEW FOR US.

IT'S NOT, UM, IT'S NOT UNCOMMON.

THERE ARE A LOT OF LIBRARIES ALREADY IN EXISTENCE THAT HAVE DONE THIS AND WE'VE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH ON IT.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, WE'VE ALREADY GONE, WE HAD ALREADY GONE OUT FOR, UM, REQUESTS FOR BIDS FOR NORTH OAK CLIFF.

'CAUSE WE WERE HOPING TO BUILD THAT LIBRARY SOONER RATHER THAN LATER BY SOMEONE TAKING THE BULK OF THE, THE COST.

SO WE ALREADY HAVE SOME IDEAS ON THAT ONE AND WE WANNA BE SENSITIVE TO THE COMMUNITY, UH, ESPECIALLY NORTH OAK CLIFF BECAUSE WE DID A LOT OF INTERACTION WITH THE COMMUNITY ALREADY.

AND WE WILL DO SO AGAIN BECAUSE IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS SINCE WE HAD, UM, THEIR, THE COMMUNITY INPUT.

BUT ONE THING WE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR, TWO THINGS WAS THEY WANTED A BIGGER MEETING SPACE.

THEIR MEETING ROOM ACCOMMODATES ABOUT 40 RIGHT NOW, SO THEY WANT A BIGGER MEETING ROOM, UH, FOR THE PUBLIC.

AND THEN THEY ALSO WANT A GREEN SPACE.

THEY WANT A PLAYGROUND, SPECIFICALLY A PLAYGROUND.

AND WE'VE HAD GREAT SUCCESS WITH THAT.

WE HAVE A TOP PLAY AREA NEAR THE ELIA ROAD BRANCH.

IT WORKS WELL.

UM, SO THERE'S LOTS OF THOUGHTS ABOUT HOW, HOW CAN WE DO THIS WITH A PARTNER, WHICH IS WHY I WAS BRINGING UP THE PARKS DEPARTMENT.

'CAUSE WE COULD ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT LARGER IF PARKS WAS INVOLVED.

AND IF YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE BOND AT ALL, PARKS IS GETTING A HECK OF A LOT MORE MONEY THEN WE ARE.

UM, SO WE WANT TO BE STAY NICE AND, AND GET SOME OF THOSE FUNDS MAYBE IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

RIGHT.

UM, BUT YES, THERE'S, THERE'S LOTS.

AND I CAN SEND YOU PATRICK, AN OLD, UM, PRESENTATION THAT CLINTON AND I DID TOGETHER ABOUT MIXED USE DEVELOPMENTS AND IT GIVES SOME REALLY GREAT OTHER LIBRARY EXAMPLES.

MAINLY THEY ARE, UM, WHERE THE LIBRARY'S ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND THERE'S HOUSING ABOVE.

THERE IS SOME RETAIL ONES AS WELL WHERE IT'S A LIBRARY, RETAIL AND HOUSING BUILT ABOVE.

AND, AND TYPICALLY THAT'S THE MOST POPULAR WAY TO GO AND THE MOST SUCCESSFUL.

COOL.

YEAH, I I THINK THERE'D BE A NUMBER OF LIBRARIES WHERE THERE MIGHT BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT IF DEPEND WE ARE WITH THE REAL ESTATE.

YEAH.

AND THAT'S WHERE, UM, WE ACTUALLY ASKED OUR STRATEGIC PLANNING FOLKS TO LOOK AT AS WELL AND GIVE US SOME MORE IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES OF WHAT WOULD FIT IN SOME OF THE OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS THAT WE MIGHT NEED EXPANSION OR HELP IN.

SO HOPEFULLY WE'LL GET SOME OF THAT FEEDBACK FROM THE CONSULTANTS AS WELL.

COOL.

THANK YOU.

SO, SO THE, THE NIGHT, THE EIGHTH WHEN YOU HAD THE ONLINE STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO SOMEONE CONTACTED ME AT FOUR 30 AND SAID, WELL HOW CAN, I SAID, WELL, YOU CAN GO ONLINE.

MM-HMM, , BUT IF I DON'T WANNA GO ON NO, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE LIBRARY.

YOU CAN GO ONLINE.

WELL, I, IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY? AND I SAID, I DON'T BELIEVE THERE'S ANY OTHER WAY FOR YOU TO VIEW IT.

OR THERE WAS A PHONE NUMBER LISTED AS WELL.

BUT, BUT I MEAN, BUT GOING FORWARD, GOING FORWARD, UM, JUST NO, THE ONLY OTHER WAY FOR FEEDBACK IS STILL THE COMMUNITY SURVEY IS STILL LIVE.

SO THEY COULD GO ONLINE AND FILL OUT COMMUNITY.

OKAY.

THAT'S STILL LIVE.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? MARY? I I DIDN'T QUITE CATCH WHAT YOU SAID EARLIER.

I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU DIDN'T HAVE A REPORT, BUT DID, WAS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANTED TO ADD? NO, NO THANK YOU.

NO, I, UM, I THINK, UM, BECAUSE WE DID MEET SINCE OUR, THE DINNER AND THAT WAS MY LAST REPORT, SO I THINK I HAVE TO LOOK BACK AT MY CALENDAR.

SO I THINK I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NEW TO REPORT.

I'M HAPPY TO WRITE IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS.

BUT ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME? NEW BUSINESS, I'LL, I'LL REMIND EVERYBODY THAT TU UH, TUESDAY DECEMBER 12TH, FOUR O'CLOCK ONLINE WE'LL HAVE

[00:45:01]

OUR JOINT MEETING WITH THE FRIENDS, UH, THE BOARD AND THE FRIENDS.

AND WE'LL BE HEARING FROM THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND STRATEGIC AND FACILITIES PLAN CONSULTANTS GROUP CORE CONSULTANTS.

YEAH.

UM, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT WE'VE GOT FULL REPRESENTATION THAT DAY.

AND THEN OUR NEXT UH, BOARD MEETING WILL BE OUR ANNUAL PLANNING MEETING ON JANUARY THE 16TH.

SO PUT THAT ON YOUR, ON YOUR SCHEDULE.

ANY OTHER NEW BUSINESS, PATRICK, YOU HAD ASKED A YEAH, WELL, UM, I HAD JUST BROUGHT UP THAT, UM, WANTING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ENGAGEMENT AT THE LIBRARY OR YOU KNOW, WHATEVER, UH, LINGO WE USE TO DESCRIBE IT.

BUT JUST, YOU KNOW, WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHO USES THE LIBRARY FOR WHAT, AND ESPECIALLY KIND OF BUY LIBRARY TO GET A LITTLE SMARTER WHEN I TALK TO MY COUNCIL MEMBER.

UM, SO I DON'T, I DON'T HAVE ANY PROPOSALS OR ANYTHING, BUT I, YEAH, I TOLD JOE I'D BRING IT UP TO GET THE BALL ROLLING AND UM, MAYBE PROPOSE THAT AT A, A FUTURE MEETING WE COULD HAVE A, HAVE KIND OF A BRIEFING ON IT AND THEN MAYBE A DISCUSSION ABOUT, YOU KNOW, IF THERE'S ANY, ANY DATA WE COULD GET KIND OF ON AN ONGOING BASIS THAT DOESN'T CREATE NEW WORK FOR JOE'S TEAMS. UM, WHAT WOULD BE PERFECT TIMING IN YOUR ASK TOO, PATRICK, I WILL SAY PERFECT TIMING BECAUSE I FORGOT ABOUT THE ANNUAL PLANNING MEETING.

SO MAYBE WE CAN JUST TABLE THE WHOLE THING AND TALK ABOUT IT IN JANUARY.

WELL, AND I WILL SAY THAT WE'RE ALREADY WORKING ON IT, SO THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT UP.

BUT MELISSA AND I HAD OUR REGULAR WEEKLY MEETING TODAY AND THEN, UH, WE, I WAS ASKING HER ABOUT THIS UPDATE SHE SENDS OUT TO STAFF, WHICH I SENT TO JUST THE TWO JUST TO YOU GUYS TODAY JUST TO SEE IF THAT'S, IF I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK.

AND THEN SHE AND I STARTED TALKING 'CAUSE IT'S SOMETHING SHE ALREADY PUTS OUT , BUT WE SHARE IT WITH THE STAFF SO WHY NOT SHARE IT? IT MAY NEED TO BE, YOU KNOW, MASSAGE JUST A LITTLE BIT.

UM, SO I THINK IT'S A GREAT START.

UM, AND WE ALSO SHARE TONS OF PROGRAMMING INFORMATION WITH THE FRIENDS.

SO IT'S LIKE, SO TO MELISSA IS LIKE, NOW IT'S ON HER TO-DO LIST.

IT'S LIKE WHO'S SHARING WHAT WITH, YOU KNOW, WHO'S ON FIRST, WHAT ARE WE SHARING WITH WHO, WHEN, AND HOW CAN WE PULL IT ALL TOGETHER? 'CAUSE THE WORK'S ALREADY BEING DONE.

THANK YOU, PATRICK, FOR NOT MAKING US DO MORE, BUT THE WORK IS ALREADY THERE.

HOW DO WE KIND OF PUT IT TOGETHER NICELY SO THAT IT'S USEFUL FOR YOU ALL AS YOU GO OUT AND ADVOCATE FOR A DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

SO WE'LL HAVE MORE FOR YOU IN JANUARY AND DEFINITELY THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA TO TALK ABOUT THAT AT THE PLANNING MEETING.

I, I THINK THAT WOULD BE A GREAT GOAL.

MM-HMM.

.

UM, WHEN WE LOOK AT THE GOALS THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, UM, I THINK THIS ONE RISES ABOVE THE LEVEL OF SOME OF THE ONES THAT COME UP WITH .

I, I THINK THIS WOULD PAY REAL DIVIDENDS AND, AND WOULD, UH, WOULD GET A LOT OF , RIGHT? BECAUSE REALLY YOUR, YOU ARE MY BIGGEST ASSET MOVING WITH INFORMATION TO THE COUNCIL AS WELL AS IN YOUR COMMUNITY AND EVERYONE ELSE YOU'RE CONNECTED TO.

ALL RIGHT, WELL, ANY OTHER NEW BUSINESS.

IF NOT, THAT'S ADJOURNED AT 4 48.

DONE AND DONE.

THANKS EVERYBODY.

WE'LL SEE YOU ON THE SCREEN ON.
