WELCOME EVERYONE.

[00:00:01]

UM,

[Municipal Library Board Meeting on April 30, 2024.]

SO AS WE GET STARTED, WE'D LIKE TO WELCOME ALICIA, WELCOME ALICIA FROM PLACE FIVE.

YES.

GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH US.

AND UM, I THINK THAT'S ALL OF OUR NEWNESS.

WE'VE GOT APPROVE THE MARCH MINUTES.

SO I'LL, BEFORE YOU DO THAT, YOU HAVE A GUEST.

MY NAME IS KATIE AND WE HAVE A GUEST.

.

HI KATIE.

I'M KATE.

KATE, SORRY.

HOW ARE YOU KATE? GOOD.

HAPPY TO BE HERE.

AND KATE IS HOPING TO BECOME A BOARD MEMBER FOR DISTRICT SIX, BUT THAT'S IN THE WORKS, SO .

ALRIGHT, CALL SOMEONE.

YEAH, WELL WE ALMOST HAVE A FULL SLATE THAT'S HAVE ONE VACANCY AFTER THAT KATE COMES BOARD.

ALRIGHT.

KATE, WE'RE WITH YOU.

YEAH, RIGHT.

WE'RE THROWING THE FULL WEIGHT OF THE MLB BEHIND YOU.

YEAH.

SUCH AS WHAT IS, I FINALLY MADE IT TO A MEETING.

HI, I'M JERRY BAKER.

NICE.

AND I REPRESENT DT N AND I THOUGHT THAT I WAS MISSING OUT ON SOMETHING VERY REMOTE, SO I FOUND OH, SHE WAS.

WELL YOU WERE AND NOW YOU LOT GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH US.

SO WE HAVE NO PUBLIC SPEAKERS, SO WE NEED TO APPROVE THE MARCH 26TH MINUTES.

I HAVE A MOTION TO MOVE.

SECOND.

SECOND.

ALL IN FAVOR? THE MINUTES ARE APPROVED.

SO BEFORE I TURN IT OVER TO, UH, JOE FOR OUR STAFF REPORTS AND DIRECTOR REPORTS, I DID WANNA REMIND EVERYONE THAT WE'VE GOT VERY BIG ELECTION, UH, ON SATURDAY.

ACTUALLY I THINK WE CAN STILL VOTE EARLY THIS EVENING TILL SEVEN.

I VOTED THIS AFTERNOON, SO, ALRIGHT, YOU HAVEN'T VOTED.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GET OUT THERE OPEN UNTIL SEVEN, I BELIEVE THIS EVENING, AND THEN AGAIN ON SATURDAY.

SO THE SIGNS ARE SPROUTING EVEN AS WE SPEAK ALL OVER , UH, THIS FAIR BERG.

UM, AND WE ALSO HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS THAT WE HAVE A NEW BULLET LAUREATE GABERT, SENIOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND A NEW YOUTH POET AT LARGE FRESHMAN HACKDAY ISHA R DO.

SO JOE AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT A POSSIBLE IDEA FOR DOWN THE LINE.

SO WITHOUT FURTHER BUSINESS, I'M GONNA PUT THE BALL IN JOE'S HANDS.

UM, I'M ACTUALLY GONNA THROW IT BACK TO YOU BECAUSE YOU REMINDED ME WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU MIGHT BE DELAYED TODAY, THAT WE PROBABLY SHOULD GET A VICE CHAIR.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING YOU COULD TAKE CARE OF TODAY ON CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS.

IT IS, IT IS APPOINTED BY YOU, SO, OH, NOT BY THE YOU HAVE POWER .

WE HAVE IN THE PAST VOLUNTEERS AND THE, SO THERE IS POWER THAT GOES ALONG WITH CHAIR WITH A LITTLE I AND PARADE INTERIM.

SO ARE THERE ANY VOLUNTEERS FOR VICE CHAIR POSITION? DO WE HAVE ANN VICE CHAIR INTERESTED FOLKS? IT'S LET THE RECORD SHOW ANN HARDING IS NOW THE VICE CHAIR OF THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD.

LOVE WINNING ELECTIONS.

.

THAT'S A QUICK ONE.

ALL RIGHT, WELL WE DO HAVE AN EDUCATIONAL, UH, SEGMENT, UM, GOING OVER OUR SMART SUMMER PROGRAM AND, UM, TARI PRADER IS OUR EMPLOYEE MANAGER OF YOUTH SERVICES AND SHE IS GOING TO JOIN US ONLINE AND TALK ABOUT SMART SUMMER 2024.

SO, WE'LL, WE'LL KICK IT OFF IN TARI AND WE'LL PUT THE SHOW ON YOU.

ALL RIGHT.

HELLO EVERYONE.

AS JOE SAID, MY NAME IS TARI PRATER, I'M OVER THE YOUTH SERVICES.

I STARTED IN THIS POSITION IN OCTOBER AND I HAVE A SHORT PRESENTATION TO SHOW YOU OVER MARCH SUMMER.

LEMME SEE IF I CAN SHARE MY SCREEN.

MAYORS YEAH, NO, WHILE SHE'S BRINGING UP IT IS WE CHANGED THE NAME TO SMART SUMMER, WHAT, FOUR YEARS AGO? FOUR YEARS AGO.

YEAH.

DR.

MAYOR JOHNSON.

IT'S SMART SUMMER WITH MAYOR JOHNSON, WHICH SMART AS YOU CAN SEE, STANDS FOR SCIENCE, MATH, ART, READING, AND TECHNOLOGY.

AND WE GOT OUR NEW LITTLE AEROBIC GUY.

OKAY, TARI, I, YOU OKAY? ALRIGHT, SO LET'S GO AHEAD AND START.

SO, WHAT

[00:05:01]

IS SMART SUMMER? IT'S A 10 WEEK SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE THAT INCORPORATE SCIENCE, MATH, ART, READING, AND TECHNOLOGY.

IT'S A CHALLENGE AIMED AT ENCOURAGE KIDS TO CONTINUE LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

AND THIS YEAR, THE SMART SUMMER CHALLENGE WILL START JUNE THE FIRST AND LASTED TO AUGUST THE 10TH.

SO FOR 2024, THE THEME FOR SMART SUMMER, IT'S READ, DISCOVER, AND CREATE, WHICH MEANS KIDS WILL HAVE MORE WAYS TO LEARN AND MORE WAYS TO EARN PRIZES.

SO LET'S BREAK DOWN EACH ONE.

FIRST IS READ.

IF A KID WANTS TO READ, THEY JUST GOTTA READ 20 MINUTES A DAY.

AND ALL READING COUNTS.

THEY CAN READ BOOKS, MAGAZINES, COMICS, EBOOKS, AUDIO BOOKS THEY CAN LISTEN TO SOMEONE READ.

SO EVERYTHING COUNTS WHEN IT COMES TO READING.

WHAT'S NEW THIS YEAR IS THAT KIDS CAN DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW OR CREATE SOMETHING NEW.

AND THIS IS FUN FOR ALL ANGELS.

SO FOR EXAMPLE, FOR TODDLERS, IF THEY WANT TO DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW, THEY CAN ATTEND A STORY TIME, A LIBRARY PROGRAM.

THEY CAN COME TO A PLAY SPACE AT THE LIBRARY OR THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT A NEW LETTER, COLOR, SHAPE, OR AN ANIMAL.

AND TO CREATE, THEY CAN DRAW A COLOR, THEY CAN FINGER PLATE, THEY CAN PLAY WITH BOX, THEY CAN CREATE WITH PLAY-DOH, THEY CAN TRACE LETTERS FOR SCHOOL AGE.

THEY CAN ALSO ATTEND A LIBRARY PROGRAM.

THEY CAN GO TO THE ZOO OF THE AQUARIUM, EXPLORE A NEW PARK, DISCOVER A NEW AUTHOR.

AND TO CREATE, THEY CAN DRAW, MAKE ART.

THEY CAN WRITE A STORY OR A POEM.

DESIGN A BOOK COVER OR GAME OR PLAY.

AND FOR TEENS TO DISCOVER THEY CAN SEND A LIBRARY PROGRAM.

THEY CAN COME HERE TO THE CENTRAL LIBRARY TO SEE OUR CREATIVE SPACES.

THEY CAN EXPLORE CAREERS AND COLLEGES.

THEY CAN LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE AND THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT THE TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL WE HAVE AT THE LIBRARY.

NOW, THESE ARE ALL SOME SUGGESTIONS.

SO THEY'RE NOT REQUIREMENTS.

AND TO CREATE, THEY CAN DRAW, MAKE ART.

THEY CAN WRITE A STORY, A POEM.

THEY CAN DESIGN CLOTHES, THEY CAN START A PODCAST OR WRITE A SONG ON MUSIC.

SO HOW IT'LL WORK THIS SUMMER IS THAT EACH DAY KIDS CAN CHOOSE TO READ, DISCOVER, OR CREATE.

AFTER LOGGING.

10 DAYS OF READING ARE 10 ACTIVITIES.

THEY CAN EARN A FREE BOOK OF THEIR CHOICE.

AND EACH TIME A CHILD LOG IN ANOTHER 10 DAYS OF READING ARE ACTIVITIES.

THEY CAN PICK UP ANOTHER PRIZE UP TO FIVE TIMES OVER THE SUMMER.

AND KIDS WHO COMPLETE A COMBINATION OF 50 DAYS OF READING AND OR ACTIVITIES BY AUGUST THE 10TH WOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN A GRAND PRIZE.

SO WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? FIRST, IT ADDRESSES THE SUMMER SLIDE BY ENCOURAGING KIDS TO KEEP LEARNING THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

IT ALSO ADDRESSES READING TRAUMA AMONG CHILDREN.

NOW THIS HAPPENS WHEN A CHILD HAS A POOR EXPERIENCE WITH READING DUE TO TEST TAKING OR BEING ASHAMED ABOUT THEIR READING CHOICES.

BUT THIS CHALLENGE IS ENCOURAGE KIDS THAT ALL READING COUNTS.

THIS CHALLENGE ALSO SUPPORTS ALL LEARNING STYLES, ALL AGES, AND IT TEACHES KIDS DECISION MAKING SKILLS.

'CAUSE EACH DAY A CHILD CAN CHOOSE TO REDISCOVER OR CREATE.

AND ALSO REMEMBER THAT ADULTS CAN JOIN SMART SUMMER TWO AND THEY CAN ALSO READ, DISCOVER, OR CREATE.

SO FOR ADULTS, IF THEY WANNA READ, YOU CAN READ UP TO 40 MINUTES A DAY.

AND JUST LIKE THE KIDS ALL READING COUNTS, THEY CAN READ BOOKS, MAGAZINE, COMICS, AND THEY CAN ALSO READ TO THEIR CHILDREN TO DISCOVER FOR ADULTS THEY CAN ATTEND A LIBRARY PROGRAM, TAKE A TOUR AT ESSENTIAL LIBRARY, LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE, LEARN ABOUT OUR DATABASES, OR LEARN ABOUT THEIR FAMILY HISTORY.

AND TO CREATE, THEY CAN DRAW, MAKE ART, WRITE POETRY, LEARN HOW TO SEW.

THEY CAN START A PODCAST OR DESIGN THEIR FAMILY TREE AND HOW ADULT SUMMER WILL WORK.

AND EACH DAY THEY CAN CHOOSE TO READ, DISCOVER, OR CREATE.

THEY COMPLETE A TOTAL OF 15 DAYS OF READING OR UP TO FIVE ACTIVITIES TO EARN A FREE BOOK OVER, TO EARN A, EARN A FREE BOOK UP TO TWO TIMES OVER THE SUMMER AND, AND AFTER, SORRY.

AND AFTER AND AFTER ADULT COMPLETE 15 DAYS OF EMAIL OR ACTIVITIES AGAIN, THEY CAN PICK UP ANOTHER PRIZE FROM THE PRIZE BAG.

AND ADULTS WHO COMPLETE UP TO 50 DAYS OF READING OR ACTIVITIES BY THE END OF THE SUMMER WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN A

[00:10:01]

GRAND PRIZE.

SO FOR SMART SUMMER, IF YOU WANNA SIGN UP, IT OPENS UP TOMORROW.

SO I EXPECT EVERYONE IN THE ROOM ON TOMORROW TO SIGN UP FOR SMART SUMMER AND SHOW ALL THE KIDS HOW Y'ALL READ, DISCOVER, AND CREATE.

THANKS.

ANY QUESTIONS FOR TARI? I HAVE A QUESTION.

YEAH, GO AHEAD.

UH, SO IN THE PAST WE HAVE ASKED OUR CITY COUNCIL PEOPLE TO BE AMBASSADOR READING AMBASSADORS.

IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE WANT TO DO AGAIN THIS YEAR? YES.

YES WE ARE.

OKAY.

WE JUST HAVE TO GET THEM TO SAY YES.

OKAY.

WELL ACTUALLY THE ASK IS COMING FROM, UH, THE FRIENDS.

FRIENDS.

OH YEAH.

AND IT'S PROBABLY ALREADY HAPPENING, BUT YOU CAN CHECK IN WITH YOUR COUNCIL MEMBER AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE HEARD FROM US AND THAT THEY ARE GOING TO BE A READING AMBASSADOR AGAIN THIS YEAR.

AND LIKE WHAT? I'LL HAVE TO ASK MARY, BUT I CAN SEND IT BACK TO YOU.

I'LL MAKE SURE WHEN THAT FIND OUT WHEN THAT'S GOING ON.

IT JUST MEANS THEIR NAME GOES ON WITH THE THING SAYING THEY, THEY'RE ENDORSING THE PROGRAM.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING.

THEY DON'T REALLY HAVE TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN TALK ABOUT IT.

ALL THIS STUFF WE WANT THEM TO DO ANYWAY.

BUT IT KIND OF GIVES THEM A LITTLE LEADERSHIP TITLE.

PROMOTE IT, PROMOTE IT TO EVERYONE IN THEIR DISTRICT BECAUSE IT IS OPEN TO ALL AGENTS, LIKE ALL THE MARKETING MATERIAL.

AND IF WE WANNA PUT IT IN OUR NEWSLETTERS, SEE A FLYER THAT READY TO GO CAN REACH.

YEP.

YEP.

PERFECT.

I'LL ADD THAT AMBASSADORS AND SEND MEDIA MATERIAL.

KNOW WHEN THE FRIENDS ASK BILL, I'M GONNA ASKARI.

DO YOU KNOW, DO YOU KNOW IF MARY'S DONE THAT? I DO NOT.

I DO NOT.

I'LL FIND OUT.

OKAY.

SO, SO THIS POWERPOINT PROGRAM CAN, YEAH.

ARI, WILL YOU SHARE THE POWERPOINT WITH ME SO I CAN SHARE WITH EVERYBODY? MM-HMM.

.

I DO THAT TODAY.

ALL RIGHT.

WHERE DO WE SIGN UP ON THE LIBRARY? WE SIGN UP AT DALLAS LIBRARY DOT BEANS, DO.ORG AND YOU CAN START TO SIGN UP TOMORROW.

IT WILL BE ON THE FRONT OF OUR WEBSITE TOMORROW AS WELL.

YEAH.

SO IN THE BANNER, IF, IF WE'RE ALREADY ON THE BEANSTALK THE PAST YEARS LOG ON, YOU SAYING LOG ON, LOG IN AND THEN LOG CHALLENGE.

YEAH.

I GUESS YOU CAN DO DOUBLE A CHALLENGE WITH KIDS UNDER FIVE WITH THE THOUSAND WHAT WORKING? YEAH.

YES YOU CAN.

YES.

MM-HMM.

WE SURE CAN IT ALL MY SON IS ON THAT ONE.

YEAH.

DOUBLE THE PRIZES.

.

I'LL PARTICIPATE, BUT I DON'T NEED ANY MORE PEOPLE.

THE NUMBER.

READ JOIN AROUND HERE.

YOU CAN JOIN EVERYTHING.

WHAT ARE THE FREE BOOKS FOR ADULTS? WE, UM, YOU'LL HAVE TO LOOK AT WHICH LIBRARY LOCATION YOU GO TO.

IT'LL ALL BE DIFFERENT.

OH, IT'S A SURPRISE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE FOR US TO GIVE AWAY.

WE'LL TAKE IN THOSE AS WELL.

WHAT KIND OF BOOKS WILL WE DONATE? ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT.

THAT NEW BOOK WE LIKE 'EM TO BE WITHIN THE LAST THREE TO FIVE YEARS.

I MEAN, NOT USED BOOKS.

OH YEAH.

GENTLY.

AS LONG AS THEY'RE IN GOOD CONDITION.

YOU WANT OURS? WE DO TO GIVE OUT.

WE DO.

WE GET, WE ABOUT THE ONES THAT WE GATHER.

UM, WE JUST MAKE SURE READER COPY OUR KIDS.

SO THOSE ARE THE ADVANCED READER COPIES THE PUBLISHER SENDS US AND WE GET A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF STUFF, BUT WE DO GIVE THOSE OUT AS WELL.

YEAH.

WE JUST MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW THAT.

DO THEY EVEN TAKE THEM? THEY DOWN, THEY REJECT.

OKAY.

I WAS JUST SAYING .

MY LUCKY DOG DOES.

YEAH.

OH THEY DO.

WE COULD DONATE BOOKS TO ANY BRANCH, ANY LOCATION.

SURE CAN.

ALL RIGHT.

ANY MORE QUESTIONS FOR ARI? THANKS LAT.

APPRECIATE YOU'RE WELCOME.

THANK YOU.

NICE TO MEET Y'ALL.

OKAY.

SO AS YOU PROBABLY ARE, ARE YOU AWARE THE STRATEGIC PLAN WAS PRESENTED TO COUNCIL ON APRIL 17TH, WAY EARLIER THAN WE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE.

AND IT KIND OF JUST WORKED OUT THAT WAY AFTER WE PRESENTED QUALITY OF LIFE.

UM, THE

[00:15:01]

MANY COUNCIL AGENDA WAS REALLY STACKED WITH OTHER THINGS, AND WE WERE GONNA GET BOOTED OFF OF THE AGENDA ANYWAY.

SO THEY SUGGESTED WE SPEED IT UP AND DO IT TWO DAYS AFTER THE PRESENTATION, WHICH WAS A LOT OF ANXIETY FROM A TEAM FOR HEATHER, KIRSTEN, AND SEAN BECAUSE I WAS OUT OF COCKPIT WITH THE DEATH IN MY FAMILY.

SO WONDERFUL ASSISTANT DIRECTORS THAT I HAD CARRIED THE LOAD AND DID AN AMAZING, AMAZING JOB OF PRESENTING COUNCIL.

SO I WANNA, THEY DID WONDERFULLY.

AND SO THE STRATEGIC PLAN WAS ADOPTED AS WELL AS THE FACILITY PLAN WITH ONE ITEM PULLED OUT OF IT.

SO OUR TECHNOLOGY POLICY HAD, UM, THERE WERE A LOT OF QUESTIONS FROM THE IT DIRECTOR AND THE IT DEPARTMENT THAT WE COULDN'T RESOLVE IN TWO DAYS.

UM, SO WE DECIDED TO NOT DELAY THE ENTIRE PLAN AND JUST PULL OUT THE TECHNOLOGY PLAN, MOVE FORWARD WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN BECAUSE IT WAS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE GET THAT GOING.

UM, SO WE'VE PULLED THE TECHNOLOGY POLICY AND WE WILL REVISIT IT RIGHT NOW.

IT'S SORT OF IN A POP OVER HERE ON HOLD BECAUSE WE REALLY WANNA FOCUS ON THE NEXT STEPS WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN, WHICH IS, UM, COMING UP WITH OBJECTIVES, MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES TO GO UNDERNEATH EVERY ONE OF THE EIGHT GOALS WE AGREED TO.

SO FIRST STEPS ON THAT IS I HAVE ENGAGED WITH LIBRARY STAFF ASKING FOR VOLUNTEERS WHO WANT TO BE ON, UM, A COMMITTEE TEAM TO HELP CREATE THOSE.

BECAUSE THE BEST WAY TO CREATE THOSE IS TO HAVE BUY-IN FROM THE STAFF WHO ARE GOING TO IMPLEMENT THEM.

RIGHT.

UM, WE HAVE A LOT OF FEEDBACK TO SHARE WITH THE SURVEYS FROM THE COMMUNITY.

AND SO WE'LL BE LOOKING AT THAT.

UM, AND THEN I WOULD LIKE TO ENGAGE YOU ALL ON YOUR THOUGHTS FOR THE OBJECTIVES.

I WANNA GET STAFF GOING AND THEN I'LL PROBABLY ASK YOU ALL TO DO SOME REVIEWING AS WELL, UM, AND GET YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS.

UM, AND THEN WE WILL BE TASKED WITH IN JUNE DOING A MEMO TO COUNCIL WITH AN UPDATE WITH, UM, THE FIRST PASS AT OUR OBJECTIVES FOR OUR GOALS.

SO THAT IS WHERE WE'RE ON THE PLAN.

THE WORK NEVER ENDS.

SO FOR MAY OR MAY, MEETING AN IDEAL WORLD, WE'VE GOT A DRAFT OF STAFF GENERATED RIGHT.

OBJECTIVES THAT THEN WE CAN LOOK AT AND FEEDBACK TALK ABOUT.

MM-HMM.

AND I'LL SHARE 'EM WITH YOU PRIOR TO THE MEETING SO YOU CAN LOOK THEM OVER.

BUT YEAH, THAT WOULD IDEALLY BE WHAT WE'D BE AFTER.

AND IF YOU HAVE ANY, DON'T HESITATE TO SHARE THOUGHTS IN ADVANCE, UM, ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY, NOT ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY, ABOUT THE, UM, OBJECTIVES FOR THE GOALS.

YEAH.

TECHNOLOGY.

WE'RE GOING TO ATTACK PROBABLY IN JUNE OR JULY.

UM, YOU MAY NOT BE AWARE, BUT OUR IT DIRECTOR HAS NOW RESIGNED AND HIS LAST DAY WAS TODAY.

AND SO WE HAVE AN INTERIM IT DIRECTOR.

AND SO HEATHER, AND I'LL BE GETTING WITH HIM.

WE'LL GO OVER THE PLAN, UM, AND WE'LL FIND OUT WHERE THE PAIN POINTS ARE AND TRY TO ADDRESS THOSE.

IT'LL TAKE SOME TIME, YOU KNOW HOW IT, IT FIND THE CURRENT GOALS THAT I'LL SHARE IT IF YOU HAVE IT.

IT IS ON THE WEBSITE.

OKAY.

UM, IF YOU GO TO THE DALLAS LIBRARY.ORG AND THEN UNDER ABOUT US, YOU'LL SEE THE STRATEGIC PLAN.

IT'S ALL THERE.

UM, IT'S QUITE LONG.

BUT IN THE BEGINNING, IF YOU LOOK AT THE SHORTENED VERSION, THE SUMMARY OF GOALS, THE EIGHT GOALS ARE PRETTY PROMINENT.

SO I WANNA ADD TO, UH, JUST THE COMMENTS ABOUT THAT MEETING.

I THOUGHT YOU GUYS DID A GREAT JOB, BUT I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THERE WERE A LOT OF QUESTIONS FROM CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS ABOUT, OH, I DIDN'T KNOW LIBRARIES WERE OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK NOW.

I DIDN'T KNOW CERTAIN VARIATIONS WERE OPEN AT NIGHT.

AND I FEEL A LOT OF THAT IS ON THE PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM.

PART OF OUR JOB AS MUNICIPAL LIBRARY BOARD IS TO CONTINUALLY EDUCATE OUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS ABOUT THE LIBRARY AND EVEN ABOUT SMALL CHANGES.

LIKE, HEY, REMEMBER WHEN YOU APPROVE SIX DAYS A WEEK? LAST SUMMER THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

.

AND NOW THAT'S A REALITY IN THE, SO I WAS A LITTLE DISHEARTENED WHEN ASKED THAT QUESTION.

I LIKE PAYING ATTENTION.

THEY DON'T VISIT THEIR LIBRARY SO CLEARLY HAVE NEVER BEEN, I THINK

[00:20:01]

INVITING YOUR COUNCIL MEMBER TO GO VISIT THE LIBRARY WITH YOU WOULD BE WONDERFUL.

GET THEM THERE.

YOU CAN GET THEM.

OH LOOK, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BRANCHES.

YEAH.

SIX DAYS A WEEK.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

EVEN THOUGH I KNOW WHO THE STAFF HATES IT, BUT WE LOVE IT.

SIX DAYS, I'M PROBABLY GUILTY OF ADVOCATING FOR THE SUNDAY HOURS, BUT AS SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW, BUT I WENT SUNDAY TO VICKERY PARK BRANCH WITH MY CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE STUFF, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE A PLAYER, IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

OBVIOUSLY IT'S A NEWS BRANCH.

AND THERE WERE OTHER FAMILIES THERE WITH SMALL CHILDREN TOO.

AND THEY WERE LIKE, OH, WE DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS ALL THIS STUFF AND WE JUST DECIDED TO TRY IT OUT AND IT'S OPEN SUNDAY.

WOW.

SO IT WAS LIKE VERY POSITIVE AND THEY LIKED THAT IT WAS A SEPARATE LIKE SOUNDPROOF TYPE ROOM FROM , LIKE THE REST OF THE LIBRARY.

I DON'T KNOW IF THE NEW BRANCHES WILL HAVE THAT, BUT THAT WAS APPARENTLY THE PARENTS WERE LIKE, THIS IS GOOD.

YOU KNOW? YEAH.

LITTLE THAT'S A UNIQUE ELEMENT FOR THAT LOCATION.

UHHUH, OF COURSE IT IS A NEWER BRANCH.

MM-HMM.

.

BUT, UM, YEAH, THAT'S UNIQUE TO THAT BUILDING.

MM-HMM.

.

SO, UM, YEAH, SO THERE PEOPLE ARE KIND OF DISCOVERING, I'VE TRIED TO POST ABOUT IT TOO, BUT, UM, I WAS GONNA ASK ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY.

IF YOU CAN ELABORATE A LITTLE MORE WHAT YOU'RE GONNA TRY TO DIVE BACK INTO.

SO I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THAT TO YOU WHEN I KNOW MORE.

MM-HMM.

, BECAUSE I WAS SORT OF OUT OF POCKET DURING ALL OF THIS TOO.

UM, I GOT AN EMAIL REALLY LIKE TWO DAYS BEFORE WE WERE PRESENTING WOW.

FROM THE IT DIRECTOR WHO, I MEAN THIS IS PUBLIC, BUT I WILL SAY HAD THE PLAN FOR OVER FIVE WEEKS, TWO DAYS, BUT THEN TWO DAYS BEFORE HAD PARKER OVER SOME ELEMENTS THAT, UM, AND, AND NOW HE IS ACTUALLY NOT THE DIRECTOR.

MM-HMM.

SO WE'RE, WE'RE ACTUALLY STARTING FROM A SCRATCH WITH THE INTERIM DIRECTOR NOW.

SO I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF THOSE SAME CONCERNS ARE A CONCERN OF THIS PERSON.

SO WE'LL BE STARTING OVER A HUNDRED PERCENT.

WHAT MAYBE POINTS TO WELL, AND REALLY IT, UM, I, I CAN'T TELL YOU RIGHT NOW.

UM, IT'S RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST A WORK IN PROGRESS.

MM-HMM.

.

SO I'LL GIVE YOU MORE DETAILS AFTER WE DIG.

CAN WE SEE THAT? YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.

SHARE IT WITH YOU.

GREAT.

IT WILL HAVE DRAFT WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.

THE MAIN SORT OF POINTS, AND THESE ARE NOT THE THINGS THAT WE WOULD NECESSARILY CONTESTING, BUT THE MAIN POINTS ARE SORT OF HOW CAN WE AS A LIBRARY TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY FURTHER SEPARATE OURSELVES FROM CITY ITS RESPONSIBILITY.

LIKE WE WENT THROUGH THIS E-RATE PROJECT, WHICH PUT, PUT A REAL SEPARATION BETWEEN OUR PUBLIC WIFI AND THE CITY'S NETWORK, WHICH IS SAFER FOR THE CITY, BETTER FOR US, GIVES US MORE BANDWIDTH.

AND SO HOW CAN WE CONTINUE DOING THOSE TYPES OF PROJECTS AND TO TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY FOR, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO PUBLIC, WE'LL WORK THROUGH IT.

WE'LL BRING IT TO YOU.

IT'LL ALL WORK OUT.

IT'LL WORK OUT.

YEAH.

DO DOES EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT E-RATE IS? OH, I'M SORRY.

I SHOULD, I SHOULD EXPLAIN.

E-RATE IS A FEDERAL PROGRAM THAT HELPS SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES SPECIFICALLY, UM, IMPROVE LARGELY TO IMPROVE THEIR, UM, NETWORK CAPABILITIES.

UM, AND THE DISCOUNTS ARE INCREDIBLY DEEP.

SO IT'S 85% DISCOUNTS ON, UM, AND I'M GONNA FORGET THE, IT'S LIKE EQUIPMENT AND SERVICES AND ONE OF THEM IS 85% DISCOUNT AND THE OTHER IS 90% DISCOUNT.

HUGE COST SAVINGS FOR US TO APPLY FOR THESE PROGRAMS. BUT THERE, BUT THERE IS A, YOU KNOW, IT IS A LOT OF WORK FOR THE ITS DEPARTMENT, UM, TO APPLY.

YEAH.

.

WELL, NO, I MEAN, THEY'RE DOING A LOT OF WORK.

I HAVE DONE IT.

WE'RE DOING IT NOW.

WE HAVE, WE, YOU KNOW, IT WOULD BE FISCALLY IRRESPONSIBLE NOT TO DO IT AND SAVE THE CITY SO MUCH MONEY.

SO IT'S HAPPENING.

MM-HMM.

.

YEAH.

, YOU KNOW, IT'S HAPPENING.

IS IT PAINFUL? YES.

, BUT IT'S HAPPENING.

YOU SET THE BUDGET FOR OTHER THINGS.

YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.

YEAH.

BUT YOU KNOW, AND, AND THEN I DON'T KNOW IF YOU RECALL, BUT YOU KNOW, AFTER THE RANSOMWARE ATTACK, WE WERE ONE OF THE LAST DEPARTMENTS THAT WAS, UM, BROUGHT BACK TO CAPACITY AND WE ARE THE MOST PUBLIC FACING DEPARTMENT.

IT, WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A

[00:25:01]

HIGHER PRIORITY.

AND THAT'S KIND OF PART OF IT, RIGHT? LIKE YES, WE WOULD LIKE TO BE A HIGHER PRIORITY BECAUSE WE ARE SERVING, WE WERE DOWN THE LONGEST SIGNING BOOKS ON THESE CHECK THE .

YEAH.

WELL WE WERE DOING IT MANUALLY.

I MEAN, YOU DID, BUT WE WERE, WE COULDN'T CHECK ANYTHING BACK IN .

RIGHT.

SO I CHECKED OUT AT BIN AND THAT DIDN'T HELP US.

IT REALLY THREW, I MEAN OUR STATS ARE ALL OFF.

IT'S JUST, I HAVE A QUESTION.

I GET WIFI INTERNET NEXT UP, BUT IF I GO TO THE LIBRARY AND I WANNA SIGN IN MY, WITH MY OWN COMPUTER, IT'S, IT'S UNSECURED.

RIGHT.

BUT DO THE, ARE THE STAFF ABLE TO DO HAVE ON DIFFERENT SYSTEMS SO THEY SECURE? YES.

OKAY.

YEAH.

ABSOLUTELY.

AND, AND I WOULDN'T SAY IT'S UNSECURED.

THERE'S SO SECURITY PROTOCOLS ON THE OH, OKAY.

I GET THE THING IN MY, YOU JUST, YOU DON'T, UM, YOU DON'T TO SIGN IT.

SO THAT'S HEATHER LOVE.

SHE'S THE ASSISTANT .

WOW.

A LOT WISH.

SO YOU MET HEATHER GOTTEN HER TITLE .

WE PROBABLY FIGURED THAT OUT.

YES.

SHE REALLY KNOWS A LOT.

THEY FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD INTRODUCE OURSELVES, UH, WITH THE NEW FACES AROUND THE TABLE TOO.

SO, UM, AND THAT IS REALLY, UM, TOM AND I TALKED ABOUT HAVING THE POET LAUREATE COME AND VISIT AS WELL.

SO WE'LL GET IN TOUCH WITH DR.

GABBERT AND UM, TRY AND GET HER ON OUR SCHEDULE AS WELL.

SHE'S VERY INTERESTING.

SHE'S ALREADY MOVED IN.

YES, SHE IS IN RESIDENCE.

I WOULD NOT OBJECT TO SOME PROGRAMS THAT WERE ACTUALLY LEAVING THE ROOM AND WALKING AROUND THE BUILDING.

YEAH, WE CAN DO THAT.

LIKE IF YOU WANNA SHOW ME THE REAR BOOK VAULT, I WOULD BE ALL ON TOP OF THAT.

.

WE CAN DO THAT FOR EXAMPLE.

SURE.

WE'LL TAKE YOU INTO THE VAULT.

YEAH.

I TOOK THAT TOUR A FEW WEEKS.

IT WAS PRETTY COOL.

YEAH.

WHERE THEY PULLED THEM THERE.

MM-HMM.

.

WE HAVE LOTS OF TREASURES.

AS A MATTER OF FACT, I WAS IN HOUSTON THIS WEEKEND.

I PICKED UP A DONATION FROM, SO CITY JOE JOHNSON WAS THE FIRST CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN IN THE CITY OF DALLAS.

AND WE HAVE A ROOM NAMED AFTER YOU WALKED PAST IT ON YOUR WAY IN.

AND THIS WAS A WOODEN BENCH MADE BY HER FATHER OR HER THAT SHE THEN GAVE TO HER BEST FRIEND SUSAN LEE MAY.

AND IT'S BEEN IN THE MAY FAMILY ALL THESE YEARS.

AND THE FATHER RECENTLY PASSED AWAY AND THE SON'S CONTACTED ME AND SAID, WOULD YOU LIKE IT? AND I SAID, YES.

AND THEN HE IS LIKE, WELL, YOU HAVE TO COME GET IT.

AND IT WAS A NEW TEXAS, LIKE ABOUT AN HOUR SOUTH OF HOUSTON.

YEAH, YOU TURNED THAT BENCH.

WE, WE PICKED IT UP SUNDAY AND BROUGHT IT BACK.

SO I MEAN IT'S, WELL IT WILL LIVE IN THAT ROOM.

AND, AND FOUR SIGNED FIRST EDITION COPIES OF HER BOOKS AS WELL THAT SHE SIGNED TO HER.

NO PIECE OF HISTORY.

THEY'RE ALL ABOUT THE HISTORY, SO YOU JUST HAVE TO GO GET IT.

THOSE FINE PRINT OTHER DUTIES, , LUKE OCCASION.

YES.

YEAH, THEY WERE LOVELY.

WELL, I THOUGHT WE COULD KICK OFF OUR NEW BUSINESS WITH JUST A, A BIG HAND FOR OUR LIBRARIANS DURING THE NATIONAL LIBRARY MONTH.

THE VERY LAST DAYS.

THE LAST HOUR.

YES.

I KEPT WISHING HAPPY LIBRARY DAY EARLY.

YEAH.

.

BUT WE, WE DO HAVE AN AMAZING GROUP AND, UH, HEATHER AND KIRSTEN AND SEAN, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NEW WHO HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO MEET THEM, WE ARE ABLELY STAFFED AND, AND JOE IS A SUPERSTAR.

SO WE, WE END OUR MEETINGS, OUR CLASSES AT SCHOOL WITH OPTIMISTIC CLOSURE.

AND I THOUGHT I WOULD ASK IF ANYBODY WHO'S HAD A FANTASTIC DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY EXPERIENCE IN LAST MONTH THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE.

I CERTAINLY HAVE, BUT I, I'LL LET SOME ALWAYS HAVE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.

, ANY, ANYTHING THAT WAS JUST MEMORABLE? WELL, I ALREADY SORT OF SPOKE ABOUT IT, BUT TAKING MY CHILDREN TO THE VICTORY PARK SUNDAY, THEY REALLY, THOSE, YOU KNOW, IT'S A BEAUTIFUL LIBRARY AND I HOPE THAT THE NEW ONES ARE APPROVED.

THEY WOULD, YOU KNOW, AND THERE'S SIX OTHER LOCATIONS OPEN, SO YEAH.

SO THEY,

[00:30:01]

YEAH, IT WAS WONDERFUL TO SEE THEM HAVING FUN.

IT WAS WONDERFUL TO HEAR THE OTHER PARENTS THAT WERE THERE COMMENTING ABOUT THE, THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT, WELL, I DON'T KNOW, MY LIBRARY WHERE I GREW UP HAD ALL THESE LIKE, PLAY LEARNING SPACES AND I DON'T REMEMBER THAT, BUT I LIKE THIS.

AND MY BRANCH IS AT OPEN SUNDAY, SO I CAME OVER HERE.

SO THAT WAS, SOME OF THOSE WERE SOME OF THAT.

SO CATHERINE IS REFERENCING OUR READING READY PLAY SPACES THAT WERE IMPLEMENTED THROUGH, UM, FUNDING FROM A PRIVATE DONOR THROUGH THE FRIENDS, UM, WHERE WE HAD THE PLAY KITCHENS, THE BLOCKS, ALL THE STUFF THAT TARI WAS MENTIONING TO STIMULATE THE ZERO TO THREE, GETTING THEM READY TO LEARN AND ENGAGING THE PARENTS BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THOSE THINGS AT HOME.

MM-HMM.

JUST A PLAY AREA.

TODDLER.

WONDERFUL.

MY FAVORITE.

AND THEY WERE EXCITED FOR THE MAIN BOOK AREA TOO, SO IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL.

I'LL SHARE, I AM A MEMBER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND OUR DAR CHAPTER OWNS THE CONTINENTAL DAR HOUSE AT FAIR PARK.

SO IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN TO THE FAIR, YOU MAY HAVE GONE TO THE DAR BOUGHT BOTTLE OF WATER FROM US .

UH, BUT THE CHAPTER ALSO OWNS ABOUT ALMOST 3000 GENEALOGY REFERENCE BOOKS THAT WE HAVE IN A PRIVATE LIBRARY IN THE HOUSE.

AND I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH STEPHANIE THAT ON THE, UH, EIGHTH FLOOR IN THE GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT ON WAYS THAT WE CAN, UM, BETTER SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THAT COLLECTION, MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE.

IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT WE COULD EVER DONATE TO THE LIBRARY BECAUSE A LOT OF COMPLICATED THINGS.

BUT, UM, IT IS A RESOURCE THAT IS EXTREMELY UNDERUTILIZED.

AND SHE HAS BEEN WORKING WITH ME ON IDEAS TO SORT OF CONNECT IT TO THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY.

UM, HELP GOT, HELPED ME GET CONNECTED TO THE DALLAS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY AND THEY'RE GONNA, UM, WORK WITH US ON, UM, NOTING THAT AND SHE'S JUST BEEN A TREMENDOUS HELP.

GOOD.

YEAH.

SHE'S OUR WONDROUS MANAGER OF THE .

UM, I JUST A SHOUT OUT TO WHITE ROCK HILL SKYLINE AND MLK, EVERY TIME I GO BY, THEY, ALL THE STAFF IS JUST ALWAYS LOVELY, WELCOMING, YOU KNOW, ME BY NAME, BY NOW, BY NOW.

SO THAT'S GOOD.

AND, UM, IT'S JUST REALLY, REALLY GREAT TO GO TO THOSE.

I TRY TO STOP BY DURING A NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK, DROP OFF THE SNACK BASKET, ASK HOW MANY EMPLOYEES THEY HAVE.

JUST SOMETHING SIMPLE YOU CAN DO ONCE A YEAR.

SO IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE THAT, IT IS APPRECIATED.

BUT I, I THINK THEY ACCEPT SNACKS.

YOUR RIGHT.

.

I STILL TOLD HER THAT SNACKS, SO I SAVED HER NATIONAL.

YEAH.

IT'S JUST A COMPLIMENT TO THEM BECAUSE OUR COFFEE IS JUST REALLY LOVELY AND WARM AND, UM, I LOVE GOING, UM, DOING THEIR THING.

YEAH.

AND THEY REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

AFTER SEVERAL RAVEN.

YES.

SUMMER IS A BUSY TIME FOR US.

YES.

YES.

AND WE ACTUALLY TAKE, WELL, WE TRY TO TAKE AUGUST OFF AFTER SUMMER READING ENDS AND DO NO PROGRAMMING FOR THREE, THREE AND A HALF WEEKS OR SO.

BUT WE HAVE SUCH DEDICATED STAFF, THEY WANNA CONTINUE DOING THE PROGRAMMING.

THEY DON'T WANNA STOP.

WE WANT TO TAKE A BREAK.

LIKE NO, YOU KNOW, RECHARGE YOUR BATTERY, SAVE THEM THEMSELVES.

CAN'T, I MEAN, KIRSTEN WILL TELL YOU WE, WE MANDATED IT.

LIKE THEY'RE LIKE, WE STILL, BUT WE'RE STILL DO OUR STORY TIME.

YEAH.

BATTERY IS CHARGED FROM .

YES.

SO PEOPLE LIKE THAT.

YEAH.

IT'S, UM, YEAH, I WOULD DO THE SAME THING.

SO I CAN'T FAULT THEM.

I TOOK A GROUP OF SENIORS TO THE SEVENTH FLOOR ON LAST TUESDAY FOR A RESEARCH PROJECT.

MISTY MAYBERRY, HER CREW HAD SPENT HOURS DIGGING THROUGH AND, AND CURATING SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

YOU HAVEN'T SPENT ANY TIME IN THE DALLAS ARCHIVES UP THERE.

IT'S, IT'S FANTASTIC.

THOSE LIBRARIANS REALLY, THEY SET GOOD, KNOW THE COLLECTION REALLY WELL.

YEAH.

THEY DO KNOW THEIR COS WELL.

I LEARNED THE OTHER DAY, UH, THIS WAS A FEW MONTHS AGO, BUT THE TIMBERLAND BRANCH PUT ON A, UH, SORT OF A POPUP CAT CAFE.

OH, WOW.

, THEY, YOU KNOW, THEY, THEY WORKED WITH A, A LOCAL CAT RESCUE .

UM, AND THE, THE BEST PART WAS, I, I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY CATS THEY STARTED WITH, BUT THEY WERE GONE WITHIN THE FIRST HOUR.

OH, OH GOOD.

THEY, THEY

[00:35:01]

HAD TO CALL 'EM TO BRING MORE CATS.

THE GREAT SUCCESS AND, YOU KNOW, TIMBERLAND'S RIGHT ON THE PLANO CITY LIMIT.

SO THEY DID A, THEY BROUGHT IN A LOT OF FOLKS FROM THE PLANO AND A LOT OF FOLKS WHO MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN TO THE LIBRARY.

UH, I'M, I WORK WITH A DIFFERENT CAT RESCUE ORGANIZATION, SO I'M TRYING TO SEE IF WE CAN FOLLOW CONNECTION.

THAT WAS A GOOD DEAL.

THAT'S FUN.

I ASKED.

THAT'S GREAT.

SAM.

THE WORD RESEARCH LEADS ME TO, UH, SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO REVISIT FROM LAST MONTH.

UH, JILL, HES OF THE GROUP FOUR, UH, SAID, UH, CENTRAL LIBRARY WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT 40 YEARS AGO AS A RESEARCH LIBRARY.

THE VISION WAS THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE THIS BIG BUILDING WHERE WE'RE GOING TO KEEP COLLECTING PAPER AND PAPER AND PAPER.

THAT'S NOT ITS ROLE ANYMORE.

WE DON'T NEED THAT ANYMORE.

I THINK THAT WAS VERY MISTIMED AND MISJUDGED ON HER PART FOR AN OUTSIDER TO SAY THAT.

AND I THINK WE SHOULD ALL BE AWARE AND PROMOTE THE, THE FACT THAT BOOKS ARE NOT DEAD, NOR HAVE THEY ALL BECOME ELECTRONIC.

AND PERHAPS SHE SHOULD REACQUAINT HERSELF WITH THE DALLAS LIBRARY.

SO JILL WAS OUR CONSULTANT FROM GROUP FOUR.

UM, WE DID HAVE A MEETING WITH HER AFTER THAT RIGHT.

THAT WAY.

AND SHE DID NOT SAY THOSE WORDS AGAIN WHEN SHE DID THE PRESENTATION TO COUNCIL.

MM-HMM.

, RIGHT.

YEAH.

IT WAS YOUR POINT TAKEN SAM.

AND WE NOTED IT WHEN SHE SAID IT AS WELL.

REMEMBER YEAR AGO YOU CHIMED IN.

WE, WE HAD A MEETING WITH HER THE VERY NEXT DAY.

WELL, IT'S SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT DURING THE BOND CAMPAIGN IS IF BOOKS ARE ALL ELECTRONIC NOW, WHY DO WE STILL NEED LIBRARIES? I SAID, YOU REALLY ASKED.

WRONG PERSON.

YEAH.

THEY'RE NOT ELECTRONIC, SO.

YEAH.

AND ACTUALLY MORE PEOPLE PREFER TO READ WITH AN ACTUAL BOOK.

HONESTLY, THAT LAST PEW STUDY THAT WAS DONE OF TEENS, TEENS PREFER AN ACTUAL PHYSICAL BOOK FOR READING VERSUS, AND THEY LIKE TO LOOK THINGS UP.

THEY LIKE TO PLAY GAMES ON THEIR PHONE AND CONNECT ON THEIR PHONE, BUT WHEN THEY'RE READING, THEY WANT TO READ A BOOK.

ACTUALLY JUST DID SOME STATISTICS ON CHECKOUTS AND, AND THIS IS NOT LIKE PERCENTAGE OF CIRCULATIONS, BUT OF THE PEOPLE WHO CHECKED ANYTHING OUT SINCE JANUARY, 66% OF THEM ONLY CHECKED OUT A PHYSICAL ITEM AND 22% ONLY CHECKED OUT AN ELECTRONIC ITEM.

AND THE REST OBVIOUSLY CHECKED.

SO THERE'S STILL A LOT OF PEOPLE CHECKING OUT PHYSICAL THINGS.

THE MATERIALS.

JOAN, HAVE YOU AND THE OTHERS ALSO BEEN READING ONLINE THAT GENERATION Z AND MILLENNIALS AND TEENS AND, AND MANY OTHERS ARE NOT ONLY READING, UH, ACTUAL PHYSICAL BOOKS, BUT THEY ARE GOING BACK TO FLIP BONES AND BELIEVE IT OR LAND LANDLINES NOW.

I'LL BELIEVE THAT ONE.

I SEE.

WELL, LP, BUT THERE'S, WELL, THERE'S A, THERE SEEMS TO BE A TREND IN THAT DIRECTION.

THERE'S A TREND IN NEW YORK, WE HOPE IT COMES DOWN HERE, BUT, UM, ACTUAL 20 SOMETHINGS ARE MAKING IT COOL TO BE AT THE LIBRARY AND THEY'RE LIKE TAKING PICTURES AND POSTING WHO THEY MET AT THE LIBRARY AND THEY'RE DRESSING UP TO GO TO THE LIBRARY AS A SOCIAL EXPERIENCE.

I'LL WEAR A NECK TIE EXPERIENCE.

IT'S A, IT'S A WONDERFUL PHENOMENON THAT'S TAKING OFF.

AND I HOPE IT COMES TO DALLAS FOR HANGING OUT AT LIBRARY.

A FIRE UNDER THERE.

WE NEED TO, WE NEED TO THINK WE'RE, I KNOW A COUPLE OF INFLUENCERS.

YEAH.

THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE READING TYPES .

IT DIDN'T SAY THEY WERE READING IT.

JUST THAT THEY'RE YEAH, THAT'S, IT MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY BE EXPOSED TO, BUT I THINK THAT WAS FUN.

YEAH.

I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION BASED ON YOUR RESEARCH POINT.

SO ONE THING I HAVEN'T HEARD TALK ABOUT IS TECH SHARE.

MM-HMM.

HOW, LIKE WHAT ARE YOUR STATISTICS ON THAT IN TERMS OF RESEARCH? YOU TEND TO USE IT.

HOW IS IT PUSHED? SO, AND DOES EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT TECH SHARE IS? WE, WE TALK ABOUT RESEARCH THAT'S PART OF IT.

SO THERE'S, THERE'S SORT OF TWO PARTS OF TECH SHARE.

YEAH.

SO THE MAIN PART IS ALSO OVER COLLECTIONS.

UM, SO THE MAIN PART IS, UM, UH, THE STATE HAS A SORT OF CONSORTIUM AGREEMENT WITH DATABASE PROVIDERS AND THEY RECENTLY CHANGED TO GALE, THE VENDOR.

SO HAS THIS ACCESS TO REAL RESEARCH ARTICLES THAT YOU KNOW, ARE, UM, HAVE A PAYWALL IF YOU'RE NOT USING YOUR LIBRARY.

AND, AND THEY ARE NOT THINGS THAT WE COULD AFFORD.

[00:40:01]

UM, DATABASE USE HAS DECLINED.

I MEAN, PRETTY STEADILY OVER TIME.

THERE'S NOT, WE DO NOT PAY FOR THAT MANY ADDITIONAL DATABASES ON TOP OF WHAT TECH SHARE PROVIDES.

BUT I THINK THAT'S WHAT MAKES TECH SHARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT NOW IS THAT IT PROVIDES A FOR, UM, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE TO FIND OUT INFORMATION ABOUT, YOU KNOW, I WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES, BUT I WANT TO FIND OUT RELIABLE HEALTH INFORMATION AND I DON'T WANNA GO TO WEBMD.

YOU KNOW, SO IT, IT HELPS PEOPLE GET CONNECTED WITH REAL RELIABLE, DEEP INFORMATION.

UM, THE OTHER PART OF TEXT SHARE IS THAT IT, IT IS ALSO A PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE A TEXAS LIBRARY CARD.

YOU CAN GO, YOU CAN GO TO YOUR LIBRARY CARD AND ASK FOR A TEXT SHARE CARD, UM, AND GET THAT.

AND THAT MEANS YOU CAN GO TO OTHER LIBRARY SYSTEMS AND CHECK ITEMS OUT FROM THERE.

EACH LIBRARY SYSTEM KIND OF PUTS THE PARAMETERS AROUND FOR THAT FOR PEOPLE COMING TO THEIR LIBRARY.

BUT IT'S A GREAT WAY THAT TEXAS LIBRARIES CAN SHARE.

AND YOU JUST TO, JUST TO EMPHASIZE, YOU'RE SAYING TEX SHARE X, NOT TEC? NO, NO, NO TEXT.

TEXT TECH THAT CLARIFY THINGS.

EVERYONE.

THE TEXAS STATE LIBRARY COMMISSION.

YEAH.

AND THEY USED TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE PAPER CARD THAT YOU CARRY.

THEY DO YOUR WALLET STILL, STILL, YEAH.

STILL DO NUMBER ABLE TO TRACK.

NO, I MEAN WE KEEP VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ON, I MEAN, I COULD TELL YOU HOW MANY PEOPLE, BUT WE KEEP VERY LITTLE DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION.

WE COULD PROBABLY TELL YOU WHAT LIBRARY, WHAT IS THEIR HOME LIBRARY.

RIGHT, RIGHT.

SO WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM.

SO IT'S, OTHER THAN THAT, IT'S MORE LIKE A POINT OF NEED REFERENCE MATERIAL.

MM-HMM, .

YEAH.

YEAH.

GO TO, YOU CAN GO TO UNIVERSITIES, PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM TOO.

I MEAN, IT REALLY IS A WAY TO GET ACCESS TO MORE MATERIAL.

AND A LOT OF THE SMALLER CITIES AROUND HERE WILL DO THAT WITH US.

JUST TO HAVE, COULD WE HAVE MORE, A LARGER COLLECTION TO CHOOSE FROM? LIKE FLU FOR INSTANCE, LIKE FLU TEXAS HAVE LIBRARY.

I DIDN'T SEE IT.

WE CAN ACCESS THIS THROUGH THE DPL WEBSITE OR YEAH.

HAVE YOU HAVE TO GO TO YOUR LIBRARY AND ASK FOR IT AND WE WILL OUR, YOU KNOW, OUR STAFF WILL GIVE YOU A LITTLE PAPER, TEXT CARD AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT JUST CIRCULATION.

JUST YEAH.

PERHAPS KIRSTEN IS THE ONE TO SPEAK TO THIS, BUT HAS SOMETHING GREAT GOING ON.

WE HAVE A, A BOXING GYM ON FLORENCE LINE AND THEY'RE GOING, THEY'RE DOING A RENOVATION.

HELP ME OUT.

THEY'RE GOING TO OPEN A LIBRARY THERE, RIGHT? UH, NO, THEY'RE NOT OPENING A LIBRARY THERE.

THEY'RE GONNA LIBRARY LIKE WHAT WE HAVE IN REC CENTER NOW WHERE YOU CAN TAKE A BOOK, NOT EVEN A STORE, WE WILL JUST, IT'S A LITTLE FREE LIBRARY.

NOT ALLOWED TO SAY THAT.

IT'S A, IT'S A MINI DPL MINI DPL.

THAT'S WHAT WE CALL FREE LIBRARIES.

COPYRIGHT.

THEY'RE TAKING, THEY'VE TAKEN OVER THE SHOPPING CENTER AT FOREST AND ELIA AND THE POLICE SUBSTATION IS THERE.

THEY HAVE A STOREFRONT AND THEN THE POLICE BOXING GYM IS THERE.

UM, THEY'VE ALREADY PUT IN, UM, BASKETBALL COURTS WHERE IT USED TO BE PARKING LOT.

THEY'RE GONNA DO A HUGE PARK.

I'VE SEEN THE PLANS.

I SAT WITH COUNCIL MEMBER STEWART AND WE FLESHED OUT WHAT WOULD BE WORK FOR US AS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT TO ENHANCE THIS BUILDING.

SO THEY'RE PUTTING IN SHELVES FOR US SO WE CAN BRING OVER MATERIALS AND IT'LL BE THE TAKE A BOOK, LEAVE A BOOK SITUATION HONOR.

AND SO THE OTHER ROAD LIBRARY, JULIE, THE MANAGER THERE, WILL BE IN CHARGE OF MAKING SURE THAT THOSE BOOKS STAY STOCK LIKE WE DO IN ALL OF OUR MINI DPLS.

WITHDRAWN.

THEY'RE ALL WITHDRAWN.

BOOKS ARE DONATED BOOKS.

SO WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING THEM OUT OR CHECKING THEM OUT.

UM, THEY'RE ALSO GOING TO HAVE, I THINK THREE CLASSROOMS. DID SHE TELL YOU TWO OR THREE? TWO, TWO CLASSROOMS. BIG MULTIPURPOSE OR THEY'RE LOOKING AT DESIGNING THE CLASSROOMS AND HAVING LAPTOPS THERE AND SUCH THAT WE COULD PARTNER WITH THEM, UM, TO DO SOME GED CLASSES, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING CLASSES AND THE SUCH.

WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH STAFF TO GO AND TEACH THOSE CLASSES.

BUT COUNCIL MEMBER STEWART ASSURED US THAT THERE WOULD BE VOLUNTEERS OF PLENTY GOOD AT THE CURRICULUM.

WE CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO DO IT, BUT WE'RE GONNA NEED THE PEOPLE TO HELP US DO IT.

SO, AND IT'S, IT'S, THEY'RE REALLY, UM, TAKING BACK THAT CORNER AND IT'S GOING TO BE FANTASTIC WHEN IT'S ALL DONE.

SO IT WAS A LONG TIME TRIP.

YEAH.

SO MANY.

YEAH, IT WAS PRETTY MUCH A EMPTY SHOPPING CENTER.

IT WAS VERY BLIGHTED.

IT'S REINVIGORATING IT AND MAKING IT

[00:45:01]

REALLY NICE SPOT FOR ALSO IT'S GONNA BE BEAUTIFUL WHEN IT'S DONE.

SO.

SO IT'S PARK AND REC STAFF THAT OPENS UP EVERY DAY? YES.

YEAH.

IT IS A PARK AND RECREATIONAL FACILITY AND LAND.

NOW THE MINI DPLS.

HOW MANY DO WE HAVE? KIRSTEN? WE HAVE ABOUT 20.

AND THAT'S FROM RUNNING FROM 10 BRANCHES.

UM, AND THEY CAN BE PLUS AS SMALL AS, PLUS THE ONE AT UP FIELD.

YEAH.

SO WE HAVE THE, UM, IN THE LITTLE LOVE LOUNGE THAT THE MAVERICKS HAS REDONE, WE HAVE BOOKSHELF THERE THAT WE KEEP STOCK WITH BOOKS TO GRAB AND TAKE ON THINGS WITH THEIR KIDS AT LAUNDRY AND REC CENTERS ALREADY.

THAT'S WHY WE ALREADY HAVE THIS PRESIDENT WITH REC CENTERS VERY POPULAR AT THE REC CENTERS THAT WE'RE AT.

THESE WERE ALL IN THESE, UM, THE PLACES THAT THEY WERE AT WERE ALL, AS YOU REMEMBER, WHEN WE OPENED OUR 15 LOCATIONS, WE DID IT BY EQUITY AND EQUITY MEASURES, OUR DEMOGRAPHICS.

AND SO WE TOOK FIRST 10 DOWN THAT LIST.

AND THOSE ARE, THEY'RE IN THOSE BRANCHES AS WE, WE USE THAT SAME DATA TO PAY FOR TO THOSE WHERE THEY WOULD GO.

BUT LITTLE THEY'RE IN THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS.

NOT IN THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS.

YES.

UM, AND EXCEPT LITTLE LOVE FIELD, UM, LITTLE LOVE LOUNGE WAS ALREADY IN EXISTENCE BEFORE THEN, SO IT'S, IT'S A BONUS.

YEAH.

GREAT JOB.

OKAY.

ALRIGHT.

WELL ANY OTHER NEW BUSINESS? TELL US WHAT, UH, DISTRICT HAS A VACANCY.

SURE CAN.

RIGHT HERE.

UM, DISTRICT THREE, THAT'S ERIN GRACIE'S.

SO DISTRICT THREE HAS A VACANCY AND DISTRICT SIX WITH OMAR VALEZ.

AND THAT WILL BE IT.

WHERE? DISTRICT THREE? UM, MOUNTAIN CREEK IS THE BRANCH LIBRARY.

OH YEAH.

ED HAMPTON, ILLINOIS.

IT'S A LONG, WEIRD DISTRICT.

WELL, SHALL WE ADJOURN? AURN .

GREAT TO HAVE EVERYBODY HERE.

RAFAEL, PATRICK, WE MISSED YOU.

GOOD TO SEE YOU GUYS.

.

COME ON DOWN.
