[00:00:01]
I'VE BEEN[Arts & Cultural Advisory Commission on June 20, 2024. ]
IN AND WE HAVE A POLL EVERYONE.ORDER, COMMISSION OF ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMISSION.
UH, SESSION 4:33 PM HELLO, EVERYBODY.
YEAH, WE ARE, WE'RE DOING GREAT.
SO AS WE, UH, APPROACH OUR SUMMER BREAK, LET'S KEEP GOING HERE.
UH, HAS EVERYONE HAD A CHANCE TO REVIEW THE MINUTES OF THE MAY 16TH, 2024 PARTS AND CULTURAL ADVISORY COMMISSION? WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND.
A, THE MINUTES OF THE MAY 16TH, 2024, ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMISSION BE APPROVED.
UH, I VERY BRIEF IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT WE ARE BLESSED TO HAVE TWO COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT, UH, PRESENTATIONS TODAY.
UM, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE AN UPDATE BY GOALS, UH, UH, AUGUSTINO, UH, PRESENT THOSE, UH, JUST, YOU KNOW, TRY THE OTHER NAMES.
HEY, YOU RIGHT WHEN WE SPEAK PERSONALLY, I GET IT ALL THE TIME, BUT, UH, IN ANY, IN ANY EVENT, WE'LL HAVE THAT.
SO LET'S GO AHEAD AND MOVE INTO OUR CULTURAL SPOT.
LET YOU INTRODUCE WHO DO WE WANT TO GO FIRST? WHO'S FIRST? UM, THREE.
BE ALL THREE OF US, RIGHT? TABLE THREE CHAIRS, RIGHT?
UH, UH, ABOUT HOW MUCH TIME DID WE HAVE? SO I KNOW.
UH, WELL, THIS IS A PERFECT TIME FOR US TO BE PRESENTED.
JUST REALLY GREAT THINGS AFTER EMERGING OUT OF WHAT MANY PEOPLE CALL FOUNDER SYNDROME WHEN OUR LAST FOUNDER DIED IN 2015.
AND OF COURSE, THE PANDEMIC AND MASSIVE CONSTRUCTION, UH, WHERE WE ARE HOUSED AT THE QUAD WRANGLE.
THAT IS FINALLY HEARING ITS, UM, COMPLETION.
AND, UH, SO AMONGST ALL THIS, WE DID HAVE A REBRANDING, WHICH INCLUDED
THAT'S
THEATER THREE IS NO LONGER THE THEATER FROM THE 1960S AND 1970S AND 1980S.
WE ARE A THEATER OF NOW, UH, AND, UH, WITH, WITH THE SAME GOAL OF SERVING OUR AUDIENCES, OUR ARTISTS, AND OUR PLAYWRIGHTS.
UH, AND SO WE'RE GONNA FOCUS ON A FEW VERY SPECIFIC THINGS THAT WE DO AND HOW WE FIT INTO THE ECOLOGY OF THE DALLAS ARTS COMMUNITY AND, AND HOW WE SERVE THAT.
SO, PLEASE, UH, GO AHEAD AND BENCH TO THE NEXT ONE.
UH, SO WE WERE FOUNDED IN 1961.
ONE MORE, UH, BY A GROUP OF PEOPLE NAMED NORMA YOUNG, JACK ALDER, UH, ROY DRAKE, AND ESTHER.
UM, NORMA YOUNG REALLY WAS THE, UH, THE, THE, UH, THE, THE LEADER OF THIS.
AND, UM, ACTUALLY, IF YOU ASKED JACK, UH, SHE CRAWLED UP TO HIM AT AN AUDITION, TAPPED HIM ON THE SHOULDER AND SAID, HEY, YOU'RE REALLY GOOD.
DO YOU WANNA FORM A THEATER ME
UH, SHE WAS VERY BIG ON PRESENTING WORKS AND REALLY PROGRESSIVE THEATER AT THE TIME.
UH, IN FACT, WE WERE ACTUALLY, WE
[00:05:01]
SAY PROGRESSIVE, UH, AT THE TIME IN 1960S, BUT WE WERE THE FIRST THEATER COMPANY IN TOWN TO PRODUCE AUGUST WILSON.UM, WE WERE IN THE ORIGINAL PREMIERE FOR HAROLD PINKER AND BECKETT.
AND WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO WHERE WE'RE, YEP.
AND HERE WE ARE IN 2024, UH, DIFFERENT COMPANY, BUT STILL SPEAKING TO NORM'S, VALUES.
UM, AND WE ARE, UH, THIS IS OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM.
TWO THIRDS WOMEN OF COLOR WHO LEAD A SMALL BUT MIGHTY BAND OF, WHAT IS IT? 9 10, 9 FULL-TIME, NINE FULL-TIME.
UH, PEOPLE WITH TWO, UM, INTERN APPRENTICES.
APPRENTICES, UH, WHO WORK WITH US ALL YEAR ROUND FOR THE SEASON.
AND SO THAT TINY STAFF, UH, HAS SO MUCH TO CONTEND WITH.
UH, THAT'S OUR, THAT'S OUR TINY BUT MIGHTY STAFF.
AND I, FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES, YEAR LONG PAID APPRENTICES, UH, AND OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, UH, OUR DOG THERE.
UH, AND THIS IS WHAT WE DO THROUGH THE YEAR.
UM, AND, OKAY, GO AHEAD AND BACK UP AND I'LL JUST COVER IT.
SO THE THINGS WE DO, UH, THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE HAVE TWO PERFORMANCE SPACES.
AND, UH, WE ALSO HAVE A LOBBY WITH AN, UH, AN ART GALLERY, A VISUAL ART GALLERY.
WE DO WITH EIGHT SHOWS, SEASON PLUS CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS.
WE HAVE MULTIPLE RENTALS COLLABORATIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
AND AMONGST ALL OF THAT, WE HAVE 16 TOILETS, 15 SINKS, 16 H BACKS,
UM, BECAUSE THE PRI THE PRIVILEGE, UH, OF HAVING YOUR OWN SPACE ALSO MEANS YOU HAVE THE BURDEN OF HAVING YOUR OWN SPACE AND KEEPING THAT, UH, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE NOT PRODUCING, YOU STILL GOTTA PAY ALL THE BILLS.
UH, AND SO WE'D LIKE TO TALK NOW ABOUT HOW WE IMPACT THE COMMUNITY ONE POINT, PLEASE.
SO EVEN WITH ALL OF THAT, I MEAN, WE HAVE IMPACTED THE COMMUNITY IN THESE QUANTIFIABLE WAYS.
UH, WE'VE HAD 62 SEASONS OF COMMUNITY IMPACT.
WE'VE EMPLOYED OVER, UH, 140 ARTISTS IN SEASON SIXTY ONE, SIX HUNDRED AND FORTY SHOWS APPROXIMATELY IN OUR ENTIRE, UH, HISTORY.
UH, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 8,900 ARTISTS IN THE HISTORY OF, OF THEATER THREE AND OVER A MILLION PATRONS.
WE THINK IT'S CLOSER TO 2 MILLION, BUT WE DIDN'T WANNA LIE, SO WE JUST SAID OVER 1 BILLION PATRONS.
THAT'S THE TYPE OF IMPACT THAT WE'VE HAD ON ARTISTS AND, AND AUDIENCES IN THE CITY.
THOSE ARE OUR CRITIQUE IS, YEAH.
OUR CRITIQUE IS, UM, SO ONE MORE, PLEASE.
WHAT'S GOING ON WITH, WITH THE, WITH WHAT WE'VE SHARED WITH YOU.
BUT, UM, ASIDE FROM PRODUCING SHOWS, UM, WE DO A LOT OF PARTNERSHIPS AND EDUCATION IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO US.
UM, CULTIVATING TALENTS AND LOCAL TALENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN, UM, AND IN OUR EFFORT TO DO THAT, UM, WE HAVE THE BOOKER T WASHINGTON ADVANCED LEARNING LAB, WHICH IS GOING INTO ITS FOURTH YEAR, UM, WITH LAURA, UH, LAUREN LEBLANC AS A TEACHER.
THAT'S ABOUT 18 KIDS, 16 TO 18 KIDS A YEAR THAT ARE LOOKING FOR COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE.
UH, SEVERAL OF THEM HAVE GONE ON TO MAJOR SCHOOLS LIKE, UH, JULLIARD ONE IS GOING TO SCHOOL IN SCOTLAND.
UM, AND THESE ARE STUDENTS THAT ARE REALLY LOOKING TO BECOME PROFESSIONALS AND DO THIS PROFESSIONALLY, BUT THAT'S AT A HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.
MOVING ON, UH, WE ARE JUST NOW STARTING A PARTNERSHIP WITH SMU.
UH, MUSICAL THEATER PROGRAM ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO BE THE SITE OF THEIR FLAGSHIP INAUGURAL PRODUCTION, UH, OF CARRIE IN THE FALL.
UM, WE WILL HAVE ONE CO-PRO A YEAR.
THEY DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE ENOUGH SPACE WHERE THEY'RE AT WITH THE AMOUNT THAT THEY PRODUCE, BUT THAT'S WHERE THAT KIND OF DEVELOPS.
UH, NOT TO MENTION, WE HAVE HIRED LOTS OF THEIR GRAD STUDENTS AS UNDERSTUDIES DESIGNERS, UM, ASSISTANT DIRECTORS EVEN, UH, THROUGHOUT THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
UM, WE'RE JUST NOW GEARING UP TO HOST FESTIVAL OF INDEPENDENT THEATERS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE, FIVE YEARS.
UM, IT'S BEEN DORMANT, BUT THAT'S A NEW PLACE FOR THESE YOUNG UP AND COMING COMPANIES TO TRY SOMETHING NEW OR MORE ESTABLISHED COMPANIES TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPERIMENTAL.
WE HAVE 28 MM-HMM,
LIKE, SO 20 WE HAD, WE HAD ABOUT 30, UH, SUBMISSIONS.
YEAH, 30 SUBMISSIONS, ABOUT 20 MADE THE CUT.
AND IT'S A FULL, UM, IT'S FULL IN BOTH SPACES.
SO WE HAVE A FULL SCHEDULE UPSTAIRS AND A
[00:10:01]
FULL SCHEDULE DOWNSTAIRS, PLUS SOME CABARETS IN THE LOBBY, PLUS SOME CABARETS IN THE LOBBY, AND A LIVE MOVING ART EXHIBIT AS WELL.UM, WE ALSO HAVE A 44-YEAR-OLD APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM.
THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT, UM, ATTRACTS, UH, LOTS OF YOUNG TALENT, FRESH OUT OF COLLEGE, LOOKING TO START THEIR CAREERS, TRACKS THEM TO THE DALLAS AREA, AND A LOT OF TIMES KEEPS THEM HERE AFTER DEVELOPING THEIR SKILLS OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR.
UM, THE LEAD ACTING TEACHER AT BOOKER T WASHINGTON, LISA CODY, IS A FORMER THREE.
SUSAN SWAN SMITH, WHO FOUNDED NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY, FORMER OF THEATER THREE.
I, MYSELF, AM A PRODUCT OF THE PROGRAM, AND NOW I RUN THE
UM, AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT, WE HAVE A, OUR MONDAY NIGHT PLAYWRIGHT PROGRAM, WHICH GIVES AFFORDABLE STATES TO PLAYWRIGHTS TO TEST OUT WORKS THAT THEY'VE BEEN, UM, WORKING ON THEMSELVES AND PUT IT ON ITS FEED IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE.
AND A REALLY AFFORDABLE HAS BEEN FOR SEVEN YEARS.
UH, WE'RE ABLE TO HOST AND HELP THEM, UM, WHICH COULD BE EACH AUDIENCE, ROUGHLY 40.
IT'S FREE TO THE COMMUNITY, 40 PEOPLE FREE.
AND THESE PLAYWRIGHT OFTEN GET PRODUCTIONS LATER OF ONE OF WHICH, UH, WOULD BE NICOLE NEELY'S, UM, STEVE BONNET, UH,
AND, UM, SHE STARTED IN, UM, A MONDAY PLAYWRIGHT.
SHE GOT A FULL PRODUCTION ON OUR STAGE COMING ON THE RACE STAGE.
UH, AND IT WAS A WILDLY SUCCESSFUL ELECTION.
SO THIS RIGHT HERE GETS TO THE HEART.
SO THIS GETS TO THE HEART OF WHY WE'RE HERE, I THINK, AND WHO WE ARE.
UM, THERE'S, THIS IS A GROUP OF, EXCEPT FOR THAT GUY, THAT OLD GUY IN THE FRONT ARE ALL VERY YOUNG, EARLY CAREER ARTISTS.
UM, UH, ADVANCE ONE MORE AND, UH, AND ONE MORE EXACT BACK.
UH, JUST BACK TO THAT PHOTO AND I'LL JUST COVER, UH, ONE MORE.
AND SO THE GUY, WAY BACK IN THE HAT IN THE HAT IS GARRETT STORMS, WHO'S NOW AN ASSOCIATE PRODUCER AT STAGE WEST.
I'M GONNA SKIP OVER THE GUY BESIDE HIM.
CHRIS RAMIREZ, WHO BECAME A DCT, UH, DT C COMPANY MEMBER AND PLAYWRIGHT AT THE GOODMAN.
NOW, UM, UH, MONET IS STILL A WORKING ACTOR THERE.
UH, THE, THE YOUNG WOMAN WITH A HAT WHOSE PARENTS AND GRANDMOTHER WERE PART OF THE THEATER THREE COMMUNITY.
UM, THE GUY IN THE FRONT THERE EARNED HIS EQUITY CARD, HAS BEEN A T THREE VETERAN FOR 30 YEARS.
UH, I DIRECTED THIS WHEN I WAS AN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE.
IT WAS WRITTEN BY DOUG RYAN, WHO LATER BECAME A, UM, UH, A PULITZER PRIZE WINNER.
STARTED AS A KID AT THEATER THREE AND MAJOR ATTAWAY, UH, THERE SMILING REAL BIG IN THE BACK.
UM, UH, UH, DOUG WRIGHT SAW HIM PERFORM AND RECOMMENDED HIM, UH, TO BECOME THE GENIE ON, ON BROADWAY AND ALADIN.
UM, THE YOUNG WOMAN WHO'S PLAYING PIANO THERE WITH A, A YOUNG JACK ALDER, UH, SHEILA WALKER, WHO STARTED AS AN EARLY CAREER MUSIC DIRECTOR, MOVED ON TO BROADWAY TOURS, CAME BACK AND MUSIC DIRECTED, AND SHARED ALL THE KNOWLEDGE THAT SHE HAD LEARNED WITH US.
THAT'S HOW WE FIT INTO THE ECOLOGY, THAT, THAT MIX OF THINGS.
OTHER GREAT EXAMPLES, UH, THERE, THERE'S A COUPLE ARROWS POINTING TO SOME PEOPLE IN THIS PHOTO.
ONE IS JUDE, UH, WHO IS IN BOOK OF T WASHINGTON'S, UH, UM, LEARNING LAB AS A VERY YOUNG CHILD, WAS IN A PLAY THAT WE PREMIERED CALLED SELF INJURIOUS BEHAVIOR.
THERE BEING HELD BY HIS STAGE MOTHER.
UM, AND, UH, THE OTHER ONE IS ALEJANDRO SDO, WHO DIRECTED, UH, PIRATES OF PENANCE.
HE WAS IN OUR MUSIC MAN A FEW YEARS AGO AS AN EARLY CAREER RIGHT OUT OF COLLEGE.
CAME BACK AND WORKED WITH BOOKER T WASHINGTON KIDS IN THEIR SHOWCASE AND SHARED WHAT HE KNOWS.
THAT'S THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF WHAT WE DO.
LET'S SEE IF WE CAN GET, UH, AND WE HAVE GONE THROUGH A MASSIVE CONSTRUCTION.
WE LOST A LOT OF PATRONS 'CAUSE PEOPLE DIDN'T WANNA COME, BUT THEY'RE COMING BACK NOW AND THEY'RE GONNA BE, UH, UH, RECIPIENTS OF A LOT OF NEW RESTAURANTS, FREE PARKING, AND OUR BRAND NEW LOBBY.
BUT THAT'S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW.
IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN OVER TO THE QUADRANGLE, UH, AND ADVANCE.
THAT'S THE FRONT OF OUR BUILDING.
NOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ABOUT 30 YEARS, WE HAVE STREET VISIBILITY.
UH, BUT NOW YOU CAN SEE US FROM THE STREET.
I'LL LEAVE IT TO YOU, KRISTEN.
AND HERE ARE SOME OF THE, UH, SMALLER ORGANIZATIONS, UH, THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, TRAVELERS AROUND OUR COMMUNITY, UM, THAT WE HAVE IMPACTED BY OFFERING THEM SPACE.
[00:15:01]
WITH, UM, WELL, WE HAVE SOME BIG COMPANIES THAT UNDER DALLAS AND, AND WHO'S RIGHT HERE.WE'VE GOT THE BAYER BOOK CLUB.
UM, SO REP THEATER HAS PRODUCED IN OUR SPACE FESTIVAL OF INDEPENDENT THEATERS, WHICH WE'RE BRINGING BACK THIS YEAR.
UM, DFW PLAY AND INDIAN AND BENGALI MUSICAL THEATER.
UH, BEL SAGE THEATER, DRY CLEAN ONLY.
UH, CROSSROADS COMMUNITY CHURCH HAS BEEN PART OF OUR FAMILY FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, DECADES.
WE, WE HAVE PROVIDED THEM SPACE, UH, TO HOLD SERVICE ON SUNDAYS.
UM, UH, WE VIRTUAL ARTISTS, UH, TAKA CAME AND HAD AN EVENT IN OUR LOBBY AND IN OUR SPACE, UH, VISUAL ARTISTS, UH, LOCAL VISUAL ARTISTS HAVE SPACE IN OUR LOBBY TO DISPLAY THEIR ART AND, AND, AND SELL THEIR ART.
CAT
UM, WHEN WE DID UPDATE OUR MISSION STATEMENT, AGAIN, WE REALLY JUST CHANGED A LITTLE BIT, MODERNIZE IT.
THIS IS PRETTY MUCH WHAT WE'VE BEEN ABOUT.
WE CULTIVATE TALENTS, WE GIVE PEOPLE OPPORTUNITIES, WE SHARE KNOWLEDGE, WE SHARE SPACE.
UM, AND THAT'S WHERE WE'RE HEADING.
WE FIT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE AS A MID-SIZE.
WE'RE, WE'RE, WE'RE THE GOAL TO THE NEXT LORD THEATER, TO THE NATIONAL STAGE.
AND WE, UM, CULTIVATE OUR EARLY TALENT AS MUCH AS WE CAN.
THAT'S WHO WE ARE, AND THAT'S WHO WE WILL BE.
AND I'LL FINALLY THANK, UH, LINDA IS OUR COMMISSIONER FOR SEVERAL YEARS, HAS BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE OF US.
I I JUST WANNA SAY, FIRST OF ALL, HOW, UM, GRATEFUL I AM TO THEATER THREE FOR WORK YOU'VE DONE OVER YEARS.
WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE IN 80 AND BEFRIENDED JACK ALDER, OF COURSE, YOU KNOW, JACK WAS THE COMPLAINER, THE HITTING ME OF COMPLAINER.
BUT, BUT HE HAD GOOD COMPLAINTS.
UM, AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT I WAS GRATEFUL THAT JACK ALWAYS HAD AN OPEN VISION.
UM, I DID SEE THAT FIRST AUGUST WILSON PRODUCTION THAT WAS DONE IN DALLAS.
UM, AND, UM, I, I FEEL LIKE THEATER THREE FITS A NICHE THAT NOBODY ELSE REALLY DOES AS FAR AS THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT YOU'VE PRODUCED, AS WELL AS THE WAY IN WHICH YOU'VE INVESTED IN THE LOCAL ARTISTS.
'CAUSE I, I KNOW MANY, I MEAN, I, I, I THINK I SAW SHIRLEY MCPHATTER THERE FIRST.
I MEAN, HE COULD COOK FOR COLOR GIRLS.
I MEAN, IT WAS, ANYWAY, I'M VERY GRATEFUL FOR THEATER THREE'S EXISTENCE.
AND THE PLACE IS BEAUTIFUL, BY THE WAY.
I'VE GOT, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON TURNING AROUND WHAT USED TO BE A DUDY THEATER OR THEATER.
AND, UH, I'VE GOT SEASON TICKETS.
SO, SO I HATS OFF TO, AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT YOUR STUDENT FROM SMU, THIS RECENT ONE, THE RECENT, HE'S PLAYING ORINO IN 12TH NIGHT AT SHAKESPEARE DALLAS RIGHT NOW.
HE WAS, I, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ON STAGE WITH HIM IN THE SEAGULL, PLAYED MY SON.
AND HE IS JUST THE MOST INCREDIBLE YOUNG MAN.
AND I, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE, BUT WE LOVE THAT HE COMES BACK AND HE'S LIKE, I LOVE THEATER THREE
SO I ALSO THINK THAT DURING THE PANDEMIC, YOU ALL DID SOME VERY CREATIVE WORK TRYING TO DO SOME ONLINE STUFF AND TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO SEE, UM, SHOWS THAT YOU COULDN'T PRODUCE BECAUSE WE COULDN'T, WE COULDN'T COME TO THE THEATER.
BUT YOU FOUND CREATIVE WAYS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR AUDIENCES.
AND I WAS KIND OF IMPRESSED WITH THAT.
THEY HAD A TACO POPUP GRANT FOR ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTIONS ONLINE.
THINK COMMISSIONER LON HAS A WHAT, WHAT THEY SAID.
BUT I ALSO WANTED TO COMPLIMENT YOU GUYS ON YOUR PRESENTATION HERE TODAY.
I THINK YOU, IN 10 MINUTES REALLY ENCAPSULATED WHAT I'VE KNOWN THEATER THREE TO BE FOR A LONG TIME.
SO KEEP DOING THAT PRESENTATION TO EVERYONE WHO WILL LISTEN TO YOU, BECAUSE I'M GREAT.
YOU OFFER SOMETHING THAT'S INCREDIBLY UNIQUE AND IT'S HARD TO GET THAT ACROSS IN 10 MINUTES.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE FIREWORKS.
AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO LEAVE NOW.
IN FACT, IF YOU WANNA STICK AROUND, IT'D BE GREAT.
'CAUSE UH, SHAKESPEARE DALLAS IS JUST GONNA SWAP SEATS WITH YOU.
CHAIRMAN, CHAIRMAN, REAL QUICK.
COMMISSIONER ILLA, JEFFREY SCHMIDT.
[00:20:01]
IT FEELS LIKE YESTERDAY, BUT IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO AT SHAKESPEARE DALLAS.AND I JUST, I JUST WANNA TAKE AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMMEND YOUR ENTIRE STAFF WHEN WE LOST JACK, THE, THE, THE LIFE OF THEATER THREE WAS IN QUESTION FROM, FROM A LOT OF US.
AND YOU GUYS HAVE TAKEN WHAT HE AND NORMA CREATED AND MADE IT WAY MUCH BIGGER THAN WHAT IT WAS.
SO KUDOS TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM, AND THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR THE CITY OF DALLAS.
UM, THE, UH, UH, YOU KNOW, YOU LEARNED, UH, THE GOOD THINGS, THINGS YOU'D LIKE TO DO DIFFERENTLY UNDER YOUR MENTORS.
AND I, I LEARNED FROM JACK THAT WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN AFTER JACK PASSED WAS IT NEEDED TO BECOME, PEOPLE NEEDED TO KNOW THEATER THREE, NOT THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OR THE FOUNDER.
AND THAT'S BEEN ONE OF OUR GOALS, THAT IT'S AN ORGANIZATION, NOT A A PERSON.
AND SO, SHAKESPEARE DALLAS, I'LL ALSO BE ASKING YOU THE SAME QUESTION OR IF YOU CAN, UH, HAND, UH, TOUCH ON IT WHEN YOU'RE UP HERE.
HOW ARE Y'ALL DOING FUNDING WISE? BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU WERE, YOU LOST SOME PATRONS BECAUSE OF THE CONSTRUCTION, WHICH THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THAT.
UM, HOW ARE Y'ALL DOING? UM, WE'VE BEEN WAITING THROUGH A LOT.
UH, ONE OF THE TRICKY THINGS ABOUT EVERYTHING GOING, UM, WE CAN TONE, LIKE WE CAN CUT DOWN ON PRODUCTIONS, SAVE COSTS, BUT THEN WE HAVE MONTHS DARKNESS WITH NO, DON'T HAVE A VERY STRONG DEVELOPMENT TRUCTURE YET.
UM, WE'RE SORT OF BUILT THAT RIGHT NOW AND JUST STARTED A, AN ANNUAL FUNDRAISING FOR THE FIRST TIME JUST LAST YEAR.
SO GROWING, UH, IN THAT REGARD.
BUT IT HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT.
16 TOILETS ARE, WE TAKE CARE OF
YOU MIGHT HAVE TO SWITCH BACK TO MANUAL
I HAD THE PLEASURE OF, OF KNOWING JACK AND WORKING WITH THEM.
AND, UM, I, I THINK REGINA KING ALSO HAS SOME, UH, NOT REGINA KING.
UM, HAS SOME, SOME DEEP ROOTS AND SOME ACCOLADES FOR JACK AND, AND WHAT HE DID FOR HER AS WELL.
THE ONLINE WAS HER WORK, THE WORK WE DID.
AND THANK YOU FOR THAT FINE QUESTION.
WOO, MR. MR. SHAKESPEARE, DALLAS
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR HAVING US.
I'M THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT SHAKESPEARE DALLAS.
UM, I'M THE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR AT CHIEF DALLAS.
UM, SO, UH, MARIN IS, UH, NEW TO OUR TEAM.
SHE'S BEEN HERE THE DELIVERY A YEAR AND WE'RE HANGING ON TO HER.
I'VE BEEN WITH THE ORGANIZATION FOR 17 YEARS AND FOLLOWING THE RETIREMENT OF OUR LONG-TERM EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR RAFAEL PERRY, LAST YEAR IN MARCH, THE BOARD ASKED ME TO COME ABOARD AS A TRANSITIONAL LEADERSHIP TEAM.
UM, SO EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT SHAKESPEARE DALLAS.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE.
UM, SO THERE WILL BE LOTS OF NEWS FROM US COMING SOON OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS AS WE KIND OF FIND OUR FOREVER TRANSITIONAL PEOPLE.
BUT I AM SO HONORED TO BE AT THE HELM DURING THIS TIME AND, AND TRYING TO GET THE ORGANIZATION PREPPED AND READY FOR KIND OF A MAJOR TRANSITION.
AND I HOPE WE DO IT AS WELL AS THEATER.
UM, IF YOU'LL GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO WHAT DO WE DO AT SHAKESPEARE DALLAS? OUR MISSION IS USING SHAKESPEARE'S WORKS AS A CORNERSTONE.
WE BRING FUN AND ACCESSIBLE, WHICH IS THE KEY WORD, INDOOR AND OUTDOOR THEATER, INTEGRATED SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGEISM BACKGROUND.
WE TRULY SEE OURSELVES AND WE TRY TO SHARE WITH OUR COMMUNITY THAT WE ARE THE PEOPLE'S THEATER.
OFTENTIMES WE'RE THE FIRST ENTRY POINT FOR SOMEBODY SEEING LIVE THEATER FOR THE FIRST TIME.
AND WE TRY TO MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE TO ALL CITIZENS OF DALLAS AND ALSO TOURISTS COMING IN AND EVERYONE IN NORTH TEXAS TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY.
SO WHAT IS OUR WHY? UM, FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE BELIEVE THAT SHAKESPEARE IS FOR EVERYONE AND THAT THE ARTS ARE BIRTHRIGHT.
SO WHAT WE DO, UM, TO DO THAT IS MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE PROVIDING FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS.
[00:25:01]
SINCE 1972, SO WE'RE 52 YEARS OLD, JUST A LITTLE BIT BEHIND THEATER THREE.UM, BUT WE'VE BEEN, UM, DOING OUR MISSION SINCE THEN AND WE WERE BASED OFF OF THE EGALITARIAN NATURE OF THE NEW YORK SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL.
SO WE'VE BEEN GOING STEADY SINCE THEN DOING FUN OUTDOOR PERFORMANCES AS WELL AS EXPANDING OUR MISSION TO INCLUDE INDOOR PERFORMANCES AND SCHOOL PROGRAMS. SINCE THEN, IF YOU GIVE THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO SHAKESPEARE, THE PARK IS AT THE CORE OF WHAT WE DO.
WE HAVE THREE FULL SCALE PRODUCTIONS.
WE'RE IN OPENING WEEK RIGHT NOW.
WE JUST OPENED OUR FIRST PRODUCTION LAST WEEK AND TOMORROW AND I WE'RE OPENING 12 NINE.
SO WE USUALLY SERVE ABOUT 30,000 PEOPLE ANNUALLY.
AND WE'VE BEEN AT THE SAMUEL GRAND AMPHITHEATER IN EAST DALLAS SINCE 1989.
THAT IS A CITY OF DALLAS PARK AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT VENUE.
SO WE ARE ONE OF THE LUCKY FEW WHO GETS TO, UH, PARTNER WITH PARKS AND REC AND PARTNER WITH THE CITY OF DALLAS OFFICE OF ARTS AND CULTURE.
AND NORMALLY WHEN I'M IN THIS ROOM, I'M TALKING TO THE PARK BOARD, SO IT'S NICE TO SEE IT'S AROUND.
UM, SO WE DO TWO SHOWS IN ROTATING REPERTORY IN THE SUMMER.
THIS YEAR IS, UH, THE ODYSSEY BY MARY ZIMMERMAN AS WELL AS 12TH NIGHT.
AND THEN THE FALL, WE'RE DOING JULIUS SEASON.
UM, AND SO WE FEEL OUR VENUE IS THE GREAT EQUALIZER.
IT'S ALL GRASS SEEDING, IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
AND ON ANY NIGHT YOU MAY FIND, UM, A YOUNG COUPLE ON THEIR VERY FIRST DATE WHO PICKED UP FREE TICKETS AT THE PARK AND RECREATION CENTER WHO ARE ENJOYING KIND OF A FAMILY FRIENDLY, LIKE ROMANTIC KIND OF CHEAP, VERY CHEAP, UH, THING TO DO.
UH, YOU'LL SEE FAMILIES WITH YOUNG KIDS, YOU'LL SEE A MOM PUSHING AROUND A STROLLER WHILE HER BABY SLEEPS.
YOU'LL SEE A CEO OF A MAJOR CORPORATION.
YOU'LL SEE A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER AND ALL OF THESE PEOPLE ARE ON THE LAWN TOGETHER ENJOYING A PICNIC UNDERNEATH THE STARS.
AND WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THAT.
AND WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THE MULTI-GENERATIONAL NATURE OF OUR WORK.
MY FAVORITE STORIES ARE WHEN I MEET PEOPLE WHO SAY MY PARENTS TOOK ME TO THE FAIR PARK BAND SHELL IN 1977 WHEN I WAS FIVE YEARS OLD, AND HERE I AM BRINGING MY CHILDREN OUT TO DO THE SAME EXPERIENCE.
SO WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THAT QUALITY AS ME
UM, AND SO YES, JUST KIND OF GOING WITH THE CROSS GENERATIONAL THEME, UM, WE DON'T ONLY DO THE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE.
SOMETIMES WE THROW IN A NON SHAKESPEARE THIS YEAR DOING THE ODYSSEY, A CONTEMPORARY, UM, INTERPRETATION OF IT.
SO WE PEPPER IN SOME NON SHAKESPEARE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT WE STILL TRY TO PRESENT CLASSICAL WORKS OR WORKS WITH CLASSICAL THEMES.
SO THAT KIND OF SETS US APART FROM THE OTHER OFFERINGS IN TOWN.
UM, SO THIS IS JUST ANOTHER SLIDE THAT KIND OF OUTLINES, UM, SOME OF THE THINGS THAT I TALKED ABOUT, ABOUT PEOPLE WHO COME OUT TO THE PARK.
OH, AND ANOTHER GREAT THING IS WE HAVE, UM, SCHOOL GROUPS COME OUT ALL THE TIME.
EVEN IN THE SUMMER, OUR OPENING NIGHT OF THE ODYSSEY, WE HAD 240 STUDENTS WHO WERE PART OF THE UNT UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM OUT THERE IN GROUP ON THE LAWN, ENJOYING A SAFE NIGHT OUT WITH THEIR PROGRAM.
WE ALSO, IN THE FALL, DO DEDICATED STUDENT MATINEES THAT BRING IN STUDENTS FROM AREA SCHOOLS, MOSTLY TITLE ONE AND MOSTLY DISD, WHICH WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF AS WELL.
UM, SO THIS IS JUST A LITTLE ADVERTISEMENT OF OUR SHOWS COMING UP RIGHT NOW.
UH, WE DID BRING SOME TICKETS FOR YOU GUYS.
SO WE HAVE TICKETS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THEM WITH YOUR CONSTITUENTS.
UH, WE BROUGHT TONS OF FREE TICKETS.
WE'RE ALWAYS HAPPY TO GIVE EVEN MORE.
SO IF THERE'S A NEED IN YOUR DISTRICT, LET US KNOW AND WE GOT THEM.
OH, THIS IS OUR SHOW PHOTOS HERE.
SO YOU CAN SEE ON THE, UH, LEFT HAND SIDE IS THE ODYSSEY.
THIS ONE HAS ORIGINAL MUSIC, PUPPETS, PROJECTIONS, MOVEMENT.
SO IT'S A VERY DIFFERENT THING THAN WE NORMALLY DO.
BUT WE'RE HAVING A GREAT TIME EXPERIMENTING WITH A LITTLE BIT OF DIFFERENT STORYTELLING THAN YOU GET IN A NORMAL SHAKESPEARE PLAY.
AND THAT'S PAIRED WITH 12 NIGHT ON THE OTHER SIDE, UM, WHICH IS JUST A FUN COMEDY WITH ROMANCE AND IT ALL ENDS UP HAPPY AT THE END.
SO WE'RE HAVING A MUSICAL SEASON THIS YEAR AND WE'RE ENJOYING IT.
AND THEN JULIUS CAESAR WILL BE COMING SHORTLY TO US IN THE FALL.
WE'RE ESPECIALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS TITLE BECAUSE JULIUS CAESAR IS A FOUNDATIONAL TEXT FOR ALL NINTH AND 10TH GRADERS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
IT'S PART OF THE TEXAS ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE, UM, TEACH.
SO WE ARE SUPER EXCITED TO FILL THAT AMPHI THEATER, NOT ONLY AT THE DEDICATED STUDENT MATS, BUT ALSO THE EVENING PERFORMANCES WITH STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO READ THIS TEXT AND HELP THEM SORT THEIR WAY THROUGH IT SO THEY CAN BE MORE SUCCESSFUL ON THEIR ACADEMIC CAREERS.
ALRIGHT, I'M GONNA LET MARIN TALK ABOUT OUR SHAKESPEARE ON THE GO PROGRAM.
SO SHAKESPEARE ON THE GO IS ONE OF OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS. SO WE HAVE BEEN SERVING THIS ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM TO SCHOOLS ACROSS NORTH TEXAS.
UM, WE'VE SERVED OVER 600,000 STUDENTS SINCE THE PROGRAMS INITIATION IN 1984, WHICH IS A VERY BIG NUMBER AND LOTS OF STUDENTS SERVED
[00:30:02]
UM, WE INCLUDE TWO AGE SPECIFIC TOURS.
UH, THE FIRST ONE WILL START FROM SECOND GRADE TO SIXTH GRADE, AND THEN THE NEXT ONE IS SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE IS HOW WE DO THAT.
UM, WE DO THE TOURS, WE HAVE MASTER CLASSES, WE HAVE SUMMER CAMPS FOR KIDS IN THE FALL TO HELP ONE BRIDGE THE LEARNING GAP THAT KIDS HAVE DURING THE SUMMERTIME WHEN THEY'RE NOT IN SCHOOL.
AND ALSO GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO DO AND SEMI GIVE PARENTS A BREAK, I'M SURE WITH ALL THE KIDS IN THE HOUSE.
UM, WE DO STUDENT MAT DAYS, LIKE JENNY SAID.
WE OFFER THREE STUDENT MAT DAYS DURING THE DAY FOR SCHOOLS TO COME AND COME SEE THE SHOW OUTSIDE OF REGULAR SHOWTIME.
THEIR TEACHERS COME, UM, AND AGAIN, IT IS ALIGNED WITH THE TEACH CURRICULUM.
SO THEY GET, UH, THEY GET, UH, SORRY, THE WORD IS ESCAPING MY BRAIN.
THEY GET STUDY GUIDES PRIOR TO THE SHOW.
THEY WATCH
AND THEN THEY GET MATERIALS AFTERWARDS THAT WE GIVE TO THE TEACHERS FOR THEM TO CONTINUE THE LEARNING PROCESS.
UM, WE FOCUS ON ETHICALLY DIVERSE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS.
AGAIN, LIKE JENNY SAID, WE TRY TO FOCUS ON TITLE ONE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA, UM, AND WORKING WITH A LOT OF LOCAL DISD SCHOOLS AND LIKE WHO'S ALREADY SAID, ALL THE PROGRAMS ARE, UM, ALIGNED WITH THE TES CURRICULUM.
THESE ARE SOME FUN PICTURES OF SHAKESPEARE ON THE GO.
SO HOW SHAKESPEARE ON THE GO WORKS IS, UM, WE HAVE ACTORS THAT COME, IT'S ABOUT A 45 MINUTES TO AN HOUR SHOW WHERE THEY WILL DO SCENES FROM SHAKESPEARE AND SOMETIMES THE EXERCISES WILL BE IN TRADITIONAL VERSE AND WE'LL HAVE ACTORS ON THE OTHER SIDE SAYING IT IN A VERY MODERN LANGUAGE SO THAT THE KIDS CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID TO THEM.
UM, WE ALSO HAVE FUN GAMES 'CAUSE SHAKESPEARE INVENTED A LOT OF WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
SO THE KIDS GET TO GO UP ON STAGE AND GET TO INTERACT AND PLAY THAT FUN GAME OF LEARNING WHAT WAS SHAKESPEARE INVENT AND, YOU KNOW, AND HOW AND WHY.
AND GETTING TO KIND OF GO DEEPER INTO THAT SET OF JUST, YOU KNOW, WATCHING A SHOW AND HAVING TO WATCH A SHOW.
THEY GET TO BE PART OF THAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
SO WE HAVE A LOT OF ADULT, UH, ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES AND NOT JUST FOR THE KIDS, FOR ADULTS AS WELL.
WE HAVE STAGE READINGS, UH, FOR PEOPLE TO COME AND SEE INTENSIVE BOOK CLUBS, EACH BOOK CLUB, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE THE ODYSSEY, UM, 12TH NIGHT, JULIE CAESAR, ALL THE SHOWS THAT WE DO WITHIN A SEASON.
WE ALSO OFFER A BOOK CLUB AS WELL.
WE DO HAVE LECTURES THAT ARE OFFERED BY ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS FOR PEOPLE TO COME AND LISTEN TO.
AND THEN SHAKESPEARE DECODED, UH, WHICH IS A FUN PODCAST THAT WE HAVE THAT GOES OVER A PLETHORA OF DIFFERENT, UM, SOCIAL TOPICS THAT WE TIE BACK IN WITH SHAKESPEARE, UM, WHICH IS PRETTY FUN.
SO POLITICS, UM, MENTAL ILLNESS EQUALITY, UH, IT JUST KIND OF RUNS THE GAMBIT.
WE TIE THAT BACK INTO SHAKESPEARE AND HAVE A FUN FACILITATING, UM, CONVERSATION.
SO OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS, UM, OUR PERFORMANCES ARE OPEN TO ALL REGARDLESS OF ABILITY TO PAY.
SO ON ANY NIGHT AT OUR PARK, YOU CAN COME IN AND REQUEST FREE ADMISSION AND YOU WILL BE GIVEN.
SO WE ALSO, UM, ALLOW KIDS 10 AND UNDER FREE OF CHARGE ALL OF THE TIME.
WE ALWAYS TRY TO BENCHMARK AGAINST, UH, THE COST OF GOING TO A MOVIE.
UM, AND THAT'S THE STEALING TICKET PRICE.
OFTEN YOU'RE SEEING, UH, PEOPLE COMING FROM MUCH LOWER OR COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE.
WE OFFER A MINIMUM OF 30% OF OUR SEATS ENTIRELY FREE.
LAST YEAR IN 2023, WE OFFERED 44% OF OUR TICKETS FREE OF CHARGE.
AND WE'RE HOPING TO INCREASE THAT NUMBER IN 2024.
WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE A AMPHITHEATER THAT SEES 1300 PEOPLE AND WE ARE LIKE, FILL IT UP EVERY SINGLE NIGHT IS OUR GOAL.
SO WE TRY TO GET THE COMMUNITY TO COME OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
WE PARTNER WITH THE CITY OF DALLAS PARK AND RECREATION CENTERS.
UH, THEY GET THOUSANDS OF FREE TICKETS EVERY YEAR THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICKUP AT THE REC CENTERS IN COMMUNITIES SO THAT PEOPLE CAN JUST STOP BY THEIR CLOSEST REC CENTER, GRAB SOME TICKETS AND COME OUT AND SEE THE SHOW.
WE PARTICIPATE IN THE TEAM ALL ACCESS PROGRAM, WHICH GIVES AWAY, UH, 10,000 CLASSES TO CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT DALLAS AS WELL.
AND WE HAVE DEDICATED STUDENT MATINEE DURING THE FALL AND OUR WINTER SEASON, WHICH WE ARE REBOOTING FACT THEATER THREE OUR HEADS.
YOU ARE SHARING THEIR BEAUTIFUL NEW THEATER WITH US IN JANUARY, WHICH WE ARE SO STOKED ABOUT, ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW WITH ALL THE STORMS. I WAS LIKE, WHAT IF WE JUST HAD WALLS ON THE CEILING? NOT BE
SO WE ARE SO GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR SHARING THEIR SPACE WITH US.
JUST ONE OF THE MORE AMAZING THINGS THEY DO IS HOUSING PEOPLE WHO NEED IT WITH THAT BEAUTIFUL BUILDING.
UM, AND THEN WE'VE GOT SUMMER CAMPS FOR KIDS TWO THROUGH 12.
AND THEN WE DO FUN EVENTS THAT AREN'T SHAKESPEARE OUT AT THE PARK.
SO WE DO MUSIC IN THE PARK AND OTHER EVENTS WITH COLLABORATORS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVEN IF SHAKESPEARE THEATER ISN'T YOUR CUP OF TEA, YOU GET TO USE THAT BEAUTIFUL GREEN SPACE OVER IN EAST DALLAS THAT'S FOUR ACRES LARGE, SO THAT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY IS ABLE TO ENGAGE EVEN IF THEY'RE LIKE, AH, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMS YET, THEY CAN COME OUT AND ENJOY SOMETHING THAT IS MORE FAMILIAR WITH THEM.
[00:35:01]
NEXT SLIDE.WE HAVE LOTS OF COLLABORATIONS.
JUNIOR PLAYERS PRESENTS AN ALL TEAM PRODUCTION OF SHAKESPEARE AT THE END OF EVERY SUMMER SEASON.
WE PARTNER WITH WOODROW WILSON, JAY LONG MIDDLE SCHOOL TO DO EVENTS OUT THERE.
AND THEN ALSO THEATERS SUCH AS INK SPARK, LAUGHTER LEAGUE, DANIEL GEORGIO DANCE GROUP THEATER, THREE AMONGST OTHERS WHO PERFORM OUT AT THE SAMUEL GRAND AMPHITHEATER.
AND YEAH, THIS IS, UH, JUST KIND OF A SUMMARY OF ALL THE THINGS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT.
WE HAVE 3000 STUDENTS WHO COME THROUGH THE STUDENT MATINEES.
THAT'S NOT EVEN INCLUSIVE OF, OF ALL THE STUDENTS WHO COME TO THE EVENING SHOWS, A MINIMUM OF 25 SCHOOLS ARE OFF OF TICKETS PRICED BETWEEN ZERO AND $10.
ALL OF OUR SUMMER CAMPS HAVE A MINIMUM SCHOLARSHIP OF 50%.
OFTEN THEY'RE COMING FOR FREE.
UM, AND WE PROVIDE OVER 150 JOBS EVERY SEASON AT SHAKESPEARE, DALLAS.
SO WE WANNA MAKE SURE WE'RE TAKING CARE OF OUR ARTISTS AND PAYING THEM A LIVING WAGE.
AND JUST TO TALK ABOUT OUR DIVERSITY, UM, WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT THERE'S EQUITABLE ACCESS TO QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION.
WE FOSTER AN INTERSECTIONAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGE AC ACQUISITION PROGRAMS. SO ALL OF OUR SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN THE SCHOOLS ARE VERTICALLY ALIGNED TO VOCABULARY, ACQUISITION AND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION.
SO NOT ONLY IS IT THEATER, IT'S ENGLISH AS WELL, AND LITERACY VERY IMPORTANT TO US.
AND THEN WE PROMOTE ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR AND WOMEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MISSION.
LAST YEAR, UM, ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS WERE AT LEAST 60% BIPOC ARTISTS AND AT LEAST 65% FEMALE OR GENDER NON-CONFORMING ARTISTS.
UM, THESE IS JUST KIND OF A LIST OF SOME OF THE, UH, SHOWS THAT WE'VE PRESENTED THAT HIGHLIGHT THE EXPERIENCES OF PEOPLE, WOMEN AND PEOPLE OF COLOR, INCLUDING A HAMLET THAT CHRISTINA
IT WAS SO EXCITING AND IT WAS A REALLY GREAT PRODUCTION AND A FIRST FOR US.
SO THANKS TO CHRISTIE FOR BRINGING THAT TO US.
UM, AND THEN NEXT SEASON I'M REALLY PUMPED.
WE'RE GONNA DO OUR FIRST BILINGUAL PRODUCTION OF THE TAMING OF THE SHROOM IN THE FALL, WHICH I THINK WILL BE A GREAT OFFERING, UM, ESPECIALLY SINCE THAT'S WHERE WE'LL BRING A LOT OF STUDENTS THROUGH.
SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
AND THEN WE JUST GOT SOME, UH, PATRON FEEDBACK COMING THROUGH.
UM, SO LOTS OF THE THINGS WE HEAR IS GREAT VALUE, BRINGING YOUR FOOD AND DRINKS SO GOOD, A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE, BEST THEATER IN TOWN, FIRST TIME EVER, AFFORDABLE NIGHT OUT.
SO WE TAKE ALL THOSE KIND OF FEEDBACK SERIOUSLY.
AND THEN IF YOU GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, OUR TEACHERS OFTEN TELL US THAT HAD WE NOT PRESENTED OUR SHOWS, THAT THEIR STUDENTS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND A LIVE THEATER PERFORMANCE AT ALL.
WE TRY TO PROVIDE FREE TICKETS AND FREE TRANSPORTATION TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN COME ON BUSES THAT WE PROVIDE TO THEM TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO GET THERE, NOT JUST HAVE A FREE TICKET THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES TO USE.
SO YEAH, THAT KIND OF WRAPS UP WHAT WE PREPARED FOR YOU GUYS.
UH, IT'S LIKE FAVORITE THING TO DO IN TOWN.
AND SEEING TWO THERE, YOU EMBODY EVERYTHING THAT THE PERFORMANCES ARE ABOUT OUT OF FUN, UH, SOPHISTICATED AND CASUAL.
UH, EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS TOTALLY COOL AND I HAVE TO THROW THIS IN.
UM, I ALSO APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THE PRODUCTIONS ARE SO SEAMLESS, UH, FROM THE STAGING TO THE LIGHTING TO THE AUDIO, EVERYTHING, ALL THINGS YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH OUTSIDE
I MEAN, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU PULL IT OFF OUTSIDE THAT WELL, BUT WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, GREMLINS OR WORKING THEIR MAGIC TO HELP YOU GUYS OUT.
UH, IT'S, IT'S ALWAYS FANTASTIC.
WELL, I'M A TEACHER AND DIRECTOR OF FINE ARTS AT MY SCHOOL.
I'M A MUSIC GUY, BUT WE TAKE KIDS EVERY YEAR TO A TWO YEAR PRODUCTIONS JUST 'CAUSE THEY, THEY'LL DO SOME STUDY ON THE TEXT AND SHAKESPEARE'S NOT SUPER APPROACHABLE FOR KIDS IF THEY JUST READ IT THE WAY IT'S WRITTEN.
'CAUSE THEY'RE LIKE, WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN? SO THEY ALWAYS DO A LITTLE BIT OF WORK BEFOREHAND.
BUT THEN, UM, WE'RE A SMALL SCHOOL, SO WE DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE THE SIZE TO PUT A SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION ON WITH OUR THEATER KIDS.
SO IT'S REALLY GREAT FOR THEM TO SEE THAT IN STUDYING IT.
UM, AND SO IT'S JUST, IT'S BEEN A GREAT, GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR THEM EVERY YEAR.
AND SO I JUST APPRECIATE THE, THE PROFESSIONAL QUALITY YOU GUYS GET WHILE IT'S STILL KIND OF A RELAXED ENVIRONMENT THAT KIDS DON'T HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THEY'RE, YOU KNOW, HAVE TO SIT AND BE QUIET AND NOT SAY ANYTHING.
THEY CAN ENGAGE A LITTLE BIT DURING THE PRODUCTIONS, WHICH HAS BEEN REALLY NICE.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR THOUGHT? I JUST WANNA SAY I'M ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT USED TO GO WHEN IT WAS AT THE BANJO AND WHAT YEAR DID THEY MOVE OVER TO SAMUEL GRANT? 1989, THE ROCK VENUE MOVED IN AND
[00:40:01]
SHAKESPEARE AND ROCK MUSIC DIDN'T GET ALONG SO GOOD.SO PARKS PARK MOVED US OVER TO SAM GRANT.
SO, BUT I JUST REMEMBER GONNA THE BANDSHELL AND IT WAS, IT WAS DIFFERENT.
THE PROBLEM I THINK WAS JUST FYI, IT WAS CEMENT
IT WAS LIKE BEING IN A FRYING PAN.
ANYWAY, UM, YOU ALL ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY.
AND I MEAN, WE JUST LOVE YOUR PRODUCTIONS AND AS DAVID SAID, THEY'RE SEAMLESS.
I MEAN, EVERYTHING IS JUST QUICK AND THEY'RE SO PROFESSIONAL AND JUST LOTS OF FUN.
SO I THINK I ALLUDED TO THIS EARLIER, BUT I GOT MY START WITH SHAKESPEARE DALLAS, UH, BACK IN 1994, I BELIEVE.
UM, SO THANK YOU FOR THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
ONE THING, UM, I DO WANNA MENTION IS THAT I REPRESENT DISTRICT 12, WHICH IS FAR NORTH DALLAS, AND WE DON'T HAVE ANY DISD IN DISTRICT 12.
WE HAVE PLANO RICHARDSON, AND CARROLLTON FARMERS BRANCH.
SO WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT NEW SCHOOLS TO REACH OUT TO, I I BEG YOU PLEASE LOOK AT DISTRICT 12.
UH, WE ARE ARTS POOR, UM, IN, IN THIS AREA AND WE DON'T GET VERY MANY OPPORTUNITIES.
SO, UH, I JUST WANNA PUT THAT LITTLE NUGGET IN YOUR, IN, IN, IN YOUR BRAIN SO YOU CAN NOODLE ON THAT.
MAYBE YOU HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR US.
SO YOU HEARD MY QUESTION, UM, BUT I'M ALSO GONNA ASK YOU AN, UM, AN ADDITIONAL QUESTION THAT I SHOULD HAVE ASKED YOU ALL TOO.
THEORE THREE, UM, FUNDING, RIGHT? I'VE HEARD FROM OTHER ARTS GROUPS, IT'S A INTERESTING TIME, RIGHT? I MEAN, WE JUST HAD A WONDERFUL TONY PRODUCTION WHERE THERE'S SO MUCH GOING ON AND SO MUCH CREATIVITY AND, AND AUDIENCES ARE GOING BACK, RIGHT? SO I, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT THE FUNDING, BUT I ALSO WANNA KNOW, GIVEN YOUR TRANSITION, UM, ARE ACTORS COMING TO YOU? ARE YOU, ARE YOU HAVING TO TURN AWAY A TON OF ACTORS BECAUSE YOU'RE JUST GETTING BLOODED AT AUDITIONS? IS THAT IN A GOOD SPACE? YEAH, GREAT QUESTION.
SO AT OUR GENERAL AUDITIONS THIS YEAR, WE SAW 250 ACTORS AND WE'RE EMPLOYING 60 OF THEM WITH OUR SHOWS.
UM, SO THERE'S ALWAYS A HUGE AMOUNT OF, OF WORKING ARTISTS IN THIS COMMUNITY.
AND THOSE OF US LIKE SHAKESPEARE THOUSAND THEATER FREE, IT'S OUR CHARGE TO EMPLOY THEM, KEEP THEM SAFE AND HEALTHY AND HAPPY.
AND UH, AND YEAH, THERE THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF FOLKS OUT THERE WHO WANNA PARTICIPATE AND WHO ARE LIVING AND WORKING ARTISTS.
AND WE TRY TO EMPLOY AS MANY AS WE CAN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, UM, TO THE FUNDING QUESTION.
UM, SO BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF OUR ACCESSIBILITY, 70% OF OUR BUDGET IS CONTRIBUTED INCOME.
WE'RE ABOUT A $1.3 MILLION ORGANIZATION THIS YEAR.
SO 70% OF THAT WE'RE HITTING THE PAVEMENTS TRYING TO RAISE EVERY DAY.
THE PANDEMIC WAS HARD ON EVERYBODY, INCLUDING US, EVEN THOUGH WE'RE OUTDOORS.
AND WE TRIED TO SHARE OUR OUTDOOR VENUE WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE, INCLUDING THEATER THREE REFERENCE
AND WE HAVE LOTS OF ROOM TO SOCIAL DISTANCE, BUT EVEN STILL, WE'RE NOT SEEING AUDIENCES RETURN AT THE SAME NUMBERS OF PRE PANDEMIC AUDIENCES.
SO WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT, YOU KNOW, HOW TO GET PEOPLE BACK, STEAL THEM BACK FROM NETFLIX, COME BACK TO LIVE THEATER, UM, TO US.
UM, SO WE'RE SORTING THROUGH THOSE ISSUES.
ANOTHER ISSUE FOR US, OF COURSE, IS THE RISING TEMPERATURES.
SO, UM, THE HEAT REALLY AFFECTS US DURING THE SUMMER AS WELL AS STORMS. WE JUST HAVE A HUGE ROUND OF STORMS. JIM KNOWS THIS, UM, THAT AFFECTED POWER OUTAGES AT OUR PARK AS WELL AS, YOU KNOW, JUST FLOODING AND DAMAGE TO OUR SCENERY AND LIGHTING EQUIPMENT.
UM, SO WE'RE STRUGGLING WITH HOW TO BALANCE THE WEATHER IN THE SUMMER.
WE'VE SHORTENED OUR PRODUCTIONS RUNNING TIME, WE'RE STARTING THEM LATER AFTER THE SUN COMES, GOES DOWN.
SO WE ARE TRYING TO EXPLORE WAYS TO CONTINUE THE TRADITION OF OUTDOOR THEATER SAFELY IN NORTH TEXAS.
UM, BUT WE'RE ALSO EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES LIKE REBOOTING OUR WINTER SEASON WITH THEATER THREE.
THEY'RE NOT CLIMATE DEPENDENT, SO WE CAN KIND OF STABILIZE OUR PROGRAMMING THAT WAY.
UM, WE DID END OUR LAST FISCAL YEAR, WELL LAST TWO FISCAL YEARS WITH A SMALL DEFICIT, ABOUT 10% OF OUR ANNUAL BUDGET.
SO PART OF MY CHARGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AS THE INTERIM LEADER IS TO RETIRE THAT DEFICIT AT THE ORGANIZATION BACK IN THE BLACK RECOVER FROM PANDEMIC CLIMATE CHANGE.
WE HAD A MASSIVE WINTER STORM IN 2021
[00:45:01]
THAT WRECKED OUR FACILITIES.UM, SO STABILIZE THE ORGANIZATION SO THEN WE CAN DO A PROPER SEARCH AND BRING PEOPLE, BRING NEW LEADERSHIP INTO AN ORGANIZATION THAT'S THRIVING.
UM, BUT WE'RE ALWAYS OUT THERE LOOKING FOR NEW FUNDING PARTNERS AND WE'RE VERY GRATEFUL TO THE OAC FOR PROVIDING, UM, A GIFT TO US EACH YEAR.
AND WE'RE ALSO GRATEFUL FOR THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT WHO PROVIDE US WITH THE PARK FREE OF CHARGE.
UM, SO WE'RE ALWAYS OUT THERE RAISING PRIVATELY RAISED FUNDS TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE AND MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS AN AFFORDABLE OPTION FOR EVERYONE TO COME AND ENJOY INTEL.
WELL, THANK YOU FOR GIVING SO MANY TICKETS AWAY TO THE COMMUNITY.
AND IN FACT, UH, I I'LL SAY THIS, I'M GOING TO TAKE SOME TICKETS TO, UH, COMMISSIONER TRILLA
SO, SO WE CAN REACH THEM IF WE, AND HE'S GOT A FULL ONE RIGHT HERE AND I'M TALKING RIGHT BEHIND ME.
I HATE TO WRAP, BUT I THINK WE HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION, COMMISSIONER, I HAVE TO COMPLIMENT, UH, CHRISTIE AND SHAKESPEARE ON THE, IN THE PARK FOR DOING HAMLET.
I WAS THERE ON A SUNDAY NIGHT AND I INTENDED TO LEAVE AT INTERMISSION
YOU WANNA SEE HOW IT ENDS? SO, TO CHRIS, THANK YOU.
HAND OUT THESE TICKETS THOUGH, SO YEAH.
JENNY, I'VE GOT A DEAL, A MOSQUITO LARVA I'M GONNA BRING INTO.
EVERYTHING NORMAL HAPPENS TO US.
WELL, THANK YOU ALL WE APPRECIATE.
OKAY, AS WE MOVE, UH, NEXT ON OUR AGENDA, COMMISSIONER JUSTIN PALOMO, UPDATE US ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
AND AS YOU ALL REMEMBER, UH, IN OUR ANNUAL REPORT GOALS THAT WE ESTABLISHED, ONE OF WHICH WAS TO HAVE A STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF AI AND HOW IT WILL IMPACT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS AS IT RELATES TO FUNDING, YOU KNOW, HAS WORKED HARD ON THIS AND IS IN THE MIDDLE OF IT, OR ACTUALLY GETTING THE BALL ROLLING.
SO I WENT AHEAD AND, AND, UM, HAND IT OUT TO YOU ALL A, UH, DRAFT OF WHAT I SAID TO THE FOLKS THAT ARE IN THIS DOCUMENT.
UM, FROM DEJA BOARD TO KAHA URIEL, THANK YOU SO MUCH TO, UM, JOSHUA KING, UM, RAFAEL TEMA.
UM, SO I'VE BEEN INDIVIDUALLY TALKING TO FOLKS, UM, ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND, AND SPECIFICALLY HOW DO WE NEED TO PREPARE FOR IT, RIGHT? WHETHER THAT'S CREATE ANOTHER CATEGORY OF GRANT FUNDING, WHICH MEANS WE'D HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING AWAY, UM, OR DO A HYBRID OF THOSE ARTISTS WHO ARE USING AI, WHATEVER THAT IS, RIGHT? BUT I THINK THAT AN ORGANIC COMMUNITY DRIVEN, WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY DOING WITH AI? WHAT ARE THEIR THOUGHTS? WHAT ARE THEIR FEELINGS ABOUT AI? UM, I REALLY THINK THAT WE NEED TO TAKE OUR CUE FROM THE COMMUNITY.
IT HAS BEEN SENT INTO A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE, AND I HAVE RECEIVED INPUT BACK.
AND SO THERE'LL BE A DRAFT TOO THAT I'M HAPPY TO SHARE WITH ANYBODY AND MAKE IT A, A LIVING DOCUMENT ON A GOOGLE SHARE DRIVE OR WHATEVER WE CAN LEGALLY DO.
UM, AND, UM, JUST TO ENCOURAGE FEEDBACK, RIGHT? UM, I WOULD LIKE TO DO A SERIES OF THESE COMMUNITY DISCUSSIONS, RIGHT? UH, FROM DISTRICT 12 TO, UH, DISTRICT 14 TO ONE, WHEREVER, UM, SO THAT WE CAN HAVE AN HONEST CONVERSATION, RIGHT? AND FIND OUT WHO'S USING IT AND, AND, AND WHAT DO WE NEED TO, HOW DO WE NEED TO PREPARE? SO THIS IS KIND OF LIKE THE INITIAL, UH, FEEDBACK FROM THE CONVERSATIONS I HAD.
AND LIKE I SAID, DRAFT TWO WILL INCORPORATE THE FEEDBACK THAT I'VE RECEIVED.
UM, AND IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEBODY THAT I NEED TO BE INCLUDING, UM, IN THESE CONVERSATIONS, PLEASE DO SO.
THANK YOU COMMISSIONER SMALL FOR, I'M SORRY, COMMISSIONER CHAIR.
THEY ARE RULES THAT WE MUST ADDRESS YOU AS COMMISSIONER CHAIR OR CHAIR COMMISSIONER, OR CHAIR.
UH, SO, UH, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AND, UM, THIS IS REALLY EXCITING BECAUSE WHEN I REACHED OUT TO SOME FOLKS, UM, AND HAD A CONVERSATION, ONE OF THE REACTIONS I GOT WAS, OH MY GOSH,
[00:50:01]
THIS TIMING IS GREAT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN HEARING SO MUCH ABOUT AI AND THE MUSIC WORLD AND, AND, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD USE IT.I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD DO IT.
YOU KNOW, I'M, I'M KIND OF TIMID.
SO, UM, YEAH, WE NEED TO, WE NEED TO REALLY BE ABLE TO, TO KIND OF CAPTURE ALL OF THE DISCUSSION.
AND, UH, WE REALLY DO WANNA ENCOURAGE THE COMMISSIONERS TO REACH OUT AND HAVE THESE DISCUSSIONS.
FOR THOSE OF US WHO ACTUALLY WORK FULL TIME IN THE, UH, IN THE BUSINESS OF ENTERTAINMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCT, UH, IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE.
SO WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY HERE TO, UH, REALLY BREAK NEW GROUND AND SET, UH, AN EXAMPLE FOR THE COUNTRY IN TERMS OF HOW WE DETERMINE WE WILL MAKE THESE RECOMMENDATIONS.
UM, IN THE BUSINESS OF MUSIC YOU GUYS MAY HAVE SEEN PROJECT AND DALLAS IS LEADING THE WAY, A COUPLE OF THE BIGGEST PROJECTS, UH, THAT HAVE GOTTEN A LOT OF NATIONAL ATTENTION COMING OUT OF DALLAS.
UH, THE RANDY TRAVIS PROJECT IS COMING OUTTA DALLAS, THE DOC PROJECT.
AND THOSE ARE PROJECTS WHERE, UH, THE, UH, THE ALGORITHMS ARE USED, UH, SINCE THEY NO LONGER HAVE THEIR VOICES, YOU, THEY CAN IMITATE, UH, THEIR VOICE, LET SOMEONE ELSE SING, AND IT'LL SOUND LIKE RANDY TRAVIS.
SO THE QUESTION IS, IS THAT A RANDY TRAVIS ALBUM? YOU KNOW, OR SAME THING WITH DOC, THEY'LL JUST THE ALGORITHMS OF HIS VOICE, SOMEBODY ELSE CAN RAP ON A PROJECT AND IT'S, IT'LL BE RELEASED AS A-A-D-O-C PROJECT.
SO, UH, AS IT RELATES TO THE VISUAL ARTS, UH, YOU COULD JUST IMAGINE IT, IT'S DIFFICULT.
SAY SOMEBODY, UH, JUST GOES AND DOES A PROMPT IN CHAT GPT AND SAYS, GIVE ME, UH, YOU KNOW, A VAN GOGH STARRY NIGHT, UH, CANVAS, UH, OF THIS PICTURE HERE.
AND IF THEY DO THE PROMPT, DID THEY CREATE THE ARTWORK OR NOT? YOU KNOW, WE NEED TO BEGIN TO ADDRESS TO WHAT EXTENT, UH, WE LOOK AT THE HUMAN INVOLVEMENT, UH, IN FUNDING OF PROJECTS.
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE, A LOT OF YOUNGER PEOPLE THAT JUST TAKE IT AS IT'S JUST A NATURAL, THE NEXT STEP AN EVOLUTION OF ART.
UM, BUT YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE PURISTS THAT ARE LIKE, YOU KNOW, IF A HUMAN DIDN'T CREATE IT, IS IT REALLY ART? UM, AND SO WE WANT TO GET FEEDBACK AND HAVE INPUT ON THESE CREATIVE ISSUES SO THAT WE CAN HELP MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS.
AND IF I COULD ADD ON THE BACK OF THIS PAGE WHERE IT SAYS, AT FIRST GLANCE, THE VERY FIRST BULLET IS THE STATE FAIR ART WINNER, THE, UM, COLORADO STATE FAIR.
THIS IS WHAT ACTUALLY GOT ME THINKING ABOUT THIS ENTIRE THING.
THAT'S, FOR ME, THAT WAS THE, THE TOUCHING STONE THAT JUST THOUGHT, YOU KNOW, IN ALL HONESTY, I THOUGHT HOW UNFAIR, RIGHT.
THAT A WINNER WOULD USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO PRE TO CREATE THIS BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART THAT LOOKS LIKE IT'S BEEN AROUND FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS.
AND THEN I ALSO INCLUDED BEETHOVEN'S 10TH SYMPHONY AND THEN THE RANDY TRAVIS PROJECT.
'CAUSE I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY INTERESTING.
YOU KNOW, AND EVERYBODY'S GOT THEIR, THEIR OPINIONS ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO FUNDING, RIGHT? AND, AND WE ARE THE KEEPERS OF THAT, THEN WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO MAKE SOME DECISIONS, TOUGH DECISIONS, I THINK.
AND THESE, I I WOULD THROW THIS OUT THERE, UH, TINO, THAT THESE TOWN HALLS, UH, OUR ANNUAL REPORT, WE SAID THAT WE WERE GONNA TRY TO COME UP WITH, UH, SOME RECOMMENDATIONS BY YEAR END AND, UH, IF WE ARE KINDA GETTING CLOSE, SO WE WANT TO STEP IT UP ON, ON THOSE.
SO WHATEVER'S, WELL, NEITHER DO WE WANNA RUSH IT.
YOU KNOW, CAN YOU SEND THIS TO US DIGITALLY? SURE.
I FEEL LIKE IT'S NOT ALREADY A PART OF YOUR EXAMINATION, WHICH I'D BE SURPRISED IF IT'S NOT THAT THERE'LL NEED TO BE SOME INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS BOILING THROUGH MY BRAIN IS THE LEGAL IMPACT.
IF WE FUND SOMETHING THAT INVOLVES AI, THAT INFRINGES ON COPYRIGHT, OR IT TYPICALLY WOULDN'T BE PATENT IN ART, BUT MAYBE, UM, BUT, BUT I FEEL LIKE WE DON'T WANT TO, UM, ISSUE A POLICY.
WE DON'T WANNA ISSUE A POLICY THAT WOULD RUN AFOUL OF THAT.
AND IT ALSO IS GONNA BE VERY IMPORTANT IN OUR FUNDING GUIDELINES TO, UM, AND I, I, I AM, I'M NOT THE PERSON TO EVEN RECOMMEND HOW WE DO THIS, BUT
[00:55:01]
SOMEBODY IN THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE WILL BE, WE PROBABLY ARE GONNA NEED SOMETHING IN OUR FUNDING GUIDELINES THAT INDICATES THAT WE, THAT PROTECT, THAT INDEMNIFIES THE CITY IN THE EVENT WE FUND AN ORGANIZATION, WE FUND AN ORGANIZATION OR AN ARTIST WHO INFRINGES UPON THE COPYRIGHT OF ANOTHER ARTIST SO THAT WE CAN'T BE PULLED IN AS A CO-DEFENDANT.YOU GOT A LOT OF WORK TO DO ON, ON THAT ONE AND RIGHT.
WELL, I, I JUST WANNA STRESS THAT IT, IT'S NOT JUST ME, RIGHT? I MEAN, I, THAT I LOOKED AT THAT IOWA STATE FAIR AND THAT, I MEAN, THE COLORADO STATE FAIR, AND THAT'S WHAT SET IT OFF FOR ME.
BUT I, I REALLY AM BEING INTENTIONAL ON REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY TO HELP ME WITH THIS, BECAUSE I DON'T WANT IT TO BE JUST ME.
OH, IN FACT, WE'RE YOU, TECHNICALLY YOU ARE CHAIRING OUR TASK FORCE ON THIS, BUT NOBODY EVER CALLED YOU TO VOLUNTEER TO JOIN
SO ANYONE THAT WANTS TO HELP, UH, TINO PLEASE.
YEAH, I'M VOLUNTEER
BECAUSE WHAT, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHATEVER POLICY, AND THIS IS PROBABLY A STAFF, UH, INQUIRY, IS WHAT DOCUMENTS, WHAT PROGRAMS DO WE HAVE WHERE WE NEED ADVICE FROM THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE ON WHATEVER INDEMNIFICATION AND PROTECT THE CITY SHORT OF LANGUAGE THAT WE NEED.
BECAUSE UNTIL YOU STARTED TALKING, I HADN'T REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT THAT.
BUT IF WE FUND SOMEBODY IN COP OR PROBABLY MORE LIKELY IN ARTS ACTIVATE ON AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT, ANOTHER ARTIST SEES IT, THEY SEE THE CITY.
UM, WE, AND WE CAN'T BE THE POLICE OF THAT, RIGHT? WE CAN'T BE THE ARBITRARY OF WHAT IS OR IS NOT.
BUT WHAT WE DO NEED IS GOOD LEGAL, LEGAL LANGUAGE THAT PROTECTS THE CITY AND THE FUNDING PROGRAMS. BECAUSE IF WE, IF WE LAND, IF WE LAND THE CITY IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAWSUIT INVOLVING FUNDING TO ARTS, THAT'S THE QUICKEST WAY I KNOW.
TO, TO GET THE, TO GET THE ARTS MONEY CUT.
AND THAT'S A DIFFERENT THING, I THINK FROM WHAT YOU'RE, THAT MAY BE A BIGGER, THAT'S REALLY A STAFF FUNCTION.
WE HAVE A DIRECTOR AND A CHECK OVER AT DBI IS LEADING THE STAFF SIDE OF, UH, THE CITY'S APPROACH TO AI.
SO THAT'S WILL BE, WILL FALL UNDER THAT UMBRELLA.
SO IT'S GOOD THAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT THIS, UM, FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE ALREADY.
AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT INFORMATION.
I WOULD, I WOULD ADD AND INVITE HER TO, TO OUR DISCUSSIONS AND OUR PLANNING.
THERE HAVE BEEN, YOU KNOW, AND I HAVE BEEN WATCHING, UH, LOOPED INTO THE BRIEFINGS.
UM, HER DIVISION HAS BEEN BRIEFING THE GPFM COMMITTEE AS THEY'RE DOING THEIR RESEARCH, UM, AND TRYING TO,
AND SO, UM, UH, TO THAT END, I WOULD SAY ONE, I'M HAPPY TO INVITE HER TO BE PART OF LATINO'S TASK FORCE AND, UH, SEPARATELY TOO, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE JUST REMAIN ALIGNED WITH THE INFORMATION THAT SHE'S PUT FORTH.
OF COURSE, Y'ALL CAN GO BACK IF YOU'RE INTERESTED AND LOOK AT HER NOTES AND HER BRIEFING PRESENTATIONS, UH, SO FAR, UH, TO THAT COMMITTEE.
UM, AND I'LL BE SURE IF SHE'S OF INTEREST, UM, TO NOT ONLY CONTINUE SHARING THAT DIRECTLY WITH, WITH COMMISSIONER MALONE, BUT WITH THE FULL COMMISSION IN CASE YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT, WHAT'S BEING BAKED.
UM, UM, BECAUSE AS FAR AS THE CITY IS CONCERNED, IT LIVES WITH HER DIVISION, UM, AS A CHARGE TO KIND OF CRAFT THE CITY'S APPROACH.
THERE ARE OTHER MUNICIPALITIES THAT ALREADY HAVE FORMAL APPROACH TO, UH, THE WAY, UH, THEY'RE USING AI, THE WAY THEY'RE ACKNOWLEDGING IT.
AND OF COURSE, UM, FOR MUNICIPALITIES THAT HAVE, UH, A CULTURAL AFFAIRS DIVISION OR AN ARTS AND CULTURE DIVISION, WHAT THEY FIND ACCEPTABLE, THE CULTURAL ARTS SECTOR.
SO, UM, I'D SAY, UH, FOR ME IT'S BEEN INTERESTING TO READ SOME OF THAT NEW YORK AND SOME OTHER CITIES.
UM, BUT WE ARE, UH, CERTAINLY NOT THERE, BUT THIS IS WHAT'S GONNA GET US THERE.
UH, I WAS GONNA, UM, MENTION SOMETHING, BUT I SAW, SAW THAT COMMISSIONER AL HAD HER HAND UP.
AMITHA IS YOUR HAND UP? YES, IT IS.
I, UH, I WAS TRYING TO TRANSITION TO MY CAR.
UM, I JUST WANNA SAY, AND MAYBE IT IS ON THIS TINY, UH, PRINT THAT I CAN'T SEE RIGHT NOW,
UM, BUT I'M REALLY INTERESTED IN THE WAY, UM, AI, UM, CAN HELP FOLKS WHO HAVE, UH, DISABILITIES, UH, ENGAGE IN THE CREATIVE ASPECTS OF THEIR LIFE THAT THEY, THAT HAS LIMITED, AND OBVIOUSLY YOU BROUGHT UP BRANDY TRAVIS, YOU KNOW, BEFORE, BUT I'M THINKING ABOUT THE MANY WAYS
[01:00:01]
IT, UH, COULD, UH, AFFECT, YOU KNOW, DIFFERENT POPULATIONS OF FOLKS.AND SO, UH, AND I'M ONLY SAYING THIS HERE, SO THAT IF YOU HEAR SOMETHING, IF YOU READ SOMETHING, IF IT'S AN ARTICLE, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT ON THE TASK FORCE, I WOULD LOVE TO JUST FOR YOU TO SEND IT TO ME, UM, BECAUSE I'M, I'M GOING TO SEMINARS, UM, AS IT RELATES TO EDUCATION.
BUT I THINK THAT MY, I, WHEN, WHEREVER I FIND THE OVERLAP, I THINK, UM, IT COULD BE HELPFUL.
SO I WAS JUST GONNA SHARE, UM, NEXT THURSDAY, THE TEXAS FOR THE ARTS IS HAVING A, AN ARTS ADVOCACY IN WACO.
AND, UH, THREE 30, I BELIEVE IS A WORKSHOP ON AI.
SO I'M STILL ON THE FENCE IF I'M GONNA EVEN GO TO THE WHOLE DAY.
UM, BUT I DEFINITELY AM CONSIDERING GOING TO THAT.
THEY HADN'T ANNOUNCED THAT AT THE BEGINNING, UH, BUT IT, I JUST SAW IT RECENTLY ON THE REVISED AGENDA.
AND SO, UM, YEAH, TO COMMISSIONER AL'S POINT, IF, IF Y'ALL HEAR OF THINGS AND WE CAN DO IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE AND GO, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
UH, ANYTHING FURTHER ON THE AI? OKAY.
SO THE EQUITY, OUR EQUITY TASK FORCE, YOU'LL SEE THAT I PUT IN HERE.
UM, YOU KNOW, IF WE DO X, Y, AND Z, RIGHT? I, I ALSO WANNA BE MINDFUL OF HOW ACCESSIBLE AI IS IF WE SHOULD DECIDE TO DO SOMETHING, UM, THAT, YOU KNOW, 'CAUSE NOT EVERYBODY HAS EVEN INTERNET ACCESS, RIGHT? UM, SO THESE OPEN SOFTWARE PROGRAMS, THESE AI PROGRAMS TO, THERE'S NO COMPUTER, THERE'S NO INTERNET, YOU KNOW, I JUST, I WANNA BE MINDFUL ABOUT THAT AS WELL.
SO JUST, YOU'LL SEE THAT IN HERE.
WELL, UH, LET'S MOVE THE AGENDA, UH, TO THE CULTURAL PLAN AND EQUITY COMMITTEE REPORT.
UM, SO I'M GOING TO SORT OF SUMMARIZE THE, UM, WORK THAT WE HIRED YOLANDA AL TO DO.
BUT I DO WANNA TALK MORE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE RECOMMENDATIONS PART OF HER REPORT.
SHE GAVE A VERY THOROUGH REPORT TO OUR COMMITTEES.
UM, SHE HAS DONE EXTENSIVE SURVEYING THE NATION FOR, UM, UM, BEST PRACTICES, UH, IN THIS AREA OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS.
AND, AND SO SHE WAS ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, TELL US, YOU KNOW, WHAT HER SOURCES WERE, WHAT SHE LOOKED AT.
SHE'S DONE A, A SURVEY OF OUR OWN OF ARTS ORGANIZATIONS TO ASSESS WHAT IT WAS THAT THEY FEEL THEY NEED.
AND THEN, UM, SHE'S MADE SOME, UM, SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS HOW WE MIGHT PROCEED WITH THE PROGRAM, A PILOT PROGRAM THAT WE ARE LOOKING TO DO.
LET ME GO THROUGH THE, UM, RECOMMENDATIONS.
AND SHE BROKE THIS NICELY DOWN INTO WHAT SHE SEES AS IMMEDIATE THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE, AND THEN WHAT LONG-TERM THINGS MIGHT WE MIGHT WANNA LOOK AT.
UM, SHE, SHE ALIGNED EVERYTHING THAT SHE LOOKED AT WITH OUR ACTUAL CULTURAL PLAN AND THE STRATEGIES THAT WERE, UH, ACKNOWLEDGED IN THAT PLAN AND THE CITY'S EQUITY PLAN, SO THAT THE THINGS THAT SHE'S RECOMMENDING FIT INTO THIS, THE GOALS THAT WE HAVE SAID WE WANT TO MEET REGARDING EQUITY, UM, UH, THROUGH OUR CULTURAL, UH, DALLAS CULTURAL PLAN AND THE CITY'S EQUITY PLAN.
SO, SO HER RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE, UM, ARE TWOFOLD.
SHE'S LOOKING AT BOTH SMALL ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE UNDER, UH, A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS, UH, IN, IN BUDGET, UM, AND ARTISTS AS WELL.
SO IT'S NOT JUST ORGANIZATIONS.
AS WE HAD SAID, WE WANTED HER TO TRY TO LOOK AT THE WAY IN WHICH WE COULD ASSIST ARTISTS AS WELL AS THE ORGANIZATIONS AND ADDRESS THE NEED FOR ACCESS TO SPACE BUILDING ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY, AND THEN AMPLIFYING ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE.
SO FROM THE SPACE STANDPOINT, SHE SAID FROM AN IN, IN THE IMMEDIATE RENTAL ASSISTANCE FOR EXISTING LOCAL PERFORMANCE EXHIBIT AND INCUBATOR SPACES, WHICH WOULD BE, UM, AT ABOUT ONE, A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THE COST FOR SET AMOUNT ACTIVATE SELECT LOCATIONS BASED ON GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OR A CAPACITY TO PROVIDE SPACE.
EXAMPLES WOULD BE DALLAS BLACK DANCE HAS SPACE MISSION, OAK CLIFF HAS SPACE, BISHOP NER HAS SPACE, AS WELL AS NON-TRADITIONAL SPACES LIKE, UH, STOREFRONTS AND OTHER PLACES IN THE CITY THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS TO UTILIZE THAT DO NOT HAVE SPACES.
AND THEN TO IMPLEMENT AN ARTS RESOURCE CENTER STATION OR STATIONS
[01:05:01]
AT SELECT LOCATIONS BASED ON GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OR CAPACITY TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO SERVICES LIKE BUSINESS EQUIPMENT AND BASIC SUPPLIES.AN EXAMPLE WILL BE TO CONSIDER A COWORKING SPACE, LIBRARIES OR CULTURAL CENTER THAT COULD BE USED BY ARTISTS OR SMALL ORGANIZATIONS, LONG TERM REVIVE THE SPACE FINDER.
YOU KNOW, MAKE IT REALLY SOMETHING THAT IS USABLE AND, AND USEFUL.
UM, CREATE SHORT TERM, MAYBE SIX MONTH OR ONE YEAR ARTIST RESIDENCIES, EITHER COLLECTIVES OR INDIVIDUAL OR ANY DISCIPLINE TO BE IMPLEMENTED AT CULTURAL CENTERS OR NON EXTERNAL PLACE.
IMPLEMENT RESIDENT THEATER COMPANIES AT ALL THE CULTURAL CENTERS AND, AND EXPLORE THE OPTION AT OTHER CITY OWNED VENUES LIKE THE MOODY, THE MAJESTIC, ET CETERA.
UM, ACTIVATE BLACK BOXES THROUGH RENTAL REIMBURSEMENT TO COVER THE COST OF STAFFING AND SECURITY, AND EXAMINE RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESIDENT COMPANIES TO OPERATE OUTTA THESE BLACK BOXES THROUGH A CITY AGREEMENT WITH NEIGHBORHOOD BASED ORGANIZATIONS.
UH, HER THINKING THERE WAS THAT, SINCE WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT IN THE CULTURAL PLAN, THAT WE WANT TO HAVE A MORE EGALITARIAN APPROACH TO DEALING WITH THE ARTS AND COMMUNITY, THAT THESE ARE PLACES THAT WE'VE INVESTED IN FROM THE CITY STANDPOINT OF BUILDING THESE BLACK BOXES AND WHAT HAVE YOU.
BUT THEY ARE NOT NECESSARILY ACTIVATED IN THAT WAY.
SO THAT WAS WHAT HER THOUGHT WAS THERE.
CREATE A PATHWAY FOR FACILITY OWNERSHIP FOR ORGANIZATIONS.
EXAMPLE, UH, THE DC COMMISSION ON THE ARTS HAS A CAPITAL GRANT PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES THOSE KINDS OF FUNDS.
LOCAL ARTS AGENCIES PROVIDE FUNDING TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT OWN OR RENT FACILITIES, THOSE THAT INTEND TO OWN FACILITIES, AND THOSE SEEKING TO SUPPORT PERMANENT PER, UH, PROPERTY EQUIPMENT OR DIGITAL ASSETS.
AND THE AWARD RANGE WOULD BE BETWEEN 18,000 AND 250,000, 240,000.
THAT WOULD, THAT WOULD BE THE, THE WAY THAT WE WOULD LOOK AT THAT.
UM, AND THEN THERE SHE GAVE SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF OTHER, UH, CITY ENTITIES IN THE UNITED STATES THAT HAVE DONE SIMILAR TYPES OF THINGS.
ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY, SKILLS BUILDING FOR CONDUCTING BUSINESS AS AN ARTIST OR ARTS ORGANIZATION.
IN THE IMMEDIATE, WE COULD BE TALKING ABOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PEER-TO-PEER MENTORING, PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL, REGIONAL, OR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BUILDING ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY THROUGH INDIVIDUAL MENTORSHIPS, CONSULTATIONS WITH PROFESSIONALS AND EXPERIENCED ARTS ADMINISTRATORS TO PROVIDE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE, POLICY AND PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT, LEGAL ADVISORS, FINANCIAL CONSULTANTS, AND, AND MARKETING CONSULTANTS, PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS AND MEMBERSHIPS, PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL, REGIONAL, OR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BUILDING ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITY THROUGH NETWORKING SYSTEMS AND PEER-TO-PEER LEARNING GROUPS, WORKSHOPS, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, FUNDRAISING, LEGAL, THOSE KINDS OF WORKSHOPS THAT, YOU KNOW, COULD BE SET UP LONG TERM.
AN ONLINE RESEARCH RESOURCE CENTER CREATED A CENTRALIZED ONLINE RESOURCE HUB WHERE PARTICIPANTS CAN ACT, UH, ACCESS, UM, TEMPLATES, TOOLKITS GUIDES, AND OTHER MATERIALS RELATED TO MANAGEMENT AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THEIR WORK INCLUDE LINKS TO FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES, RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS AND INDUSTRY REPORTS.
ADDITIONAL A RC RESOURCE CENTER STATIONS, OR DEDICATED A RC HUB, 'CAUSE THAT WAS ACTUALLY MENTIONED IN THE CULTURAL PLAN THAT WE WOULD HAVE SUCH A CENTER OR CENTERS FOR, UH, THE ARTS COMMUNITY.
THEN UNDER THE ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE, UM, HEADING SUPPORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARTISTIC CAPACITY AND CREATIVITY AS AN ARTIST OR ORGANIZATION IN THE IMMEDIATE, LIKE THE OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PEER-TO-PEER MENTORING, UM, CONSULTATION WITH PROFESSIONALS AND EXPERIENCED ARTISTS WHO ENGAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARTISTIC CRITIQUE, PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT, LIGHTING AND MUSIC, RECORDING, PUBLISH IT, ET CETERA.
UM, WE OF COURSE KNOW IN DALLAS WE HAVE ALL OF THE PEOPLE WE NEED TO GET THIS TO HAPPEN.
PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS AND MEMBERSHIPS, PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL, REGIONAL, OR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON BUILDING ARTISTIC CAPACITY THROUGH NETWORKING SYSTEMS AND PEER-TO-PEER LEARNING GROUPS.
AND THEN ONCE AGAIN, WORKSHOPS SPECIFICALLY GEARED TOWARDS THE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES THAT WOULD BE USEFUL LONG TERM.
ONCE AGAIN, THE ONLINE RESOURCE CENTER WOULD ALSO BE AVAILABLE TO PROVIDE THE TOOLKITS AND WHAT HAVE YOU FOR THE INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS AND, AND, AND WHO ARE DOING THE ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT.
UM, AND THEN CRITERIA CONSIDERATIONS, SHE SAID TO BE ESTABLISHED BY THE CITY OF DALLAS OFFICE OF ARTS AND CULTURE.
UH, AND, AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL MANDATES.
HOWEVER, SOME SUGGESTIONS INCLUDE THAT FOR INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED, HAVE APPLIED OR RECEIVED FUNDING FROM OAC OR HAVE EXHIBITED OR PRESENTED AT A CITY, DALLAS CULTURAL CENTER ORGANIZATIONS, COP ORGANIZATION WITH A BUDGET UNDER $150,000.
ORGANIZATIONS THAT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR COP, BUT HAVE NOT APPLIED ORGANIZATIONS THAT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR COP BUT
[01:10:01]
HAVE BUDGET UNDER A HUNDRED THOUSAND.AND THEN WE WOULD HAVE, SHE HAS A WHOLE THING OF FUNDING PROGRAM POSSIBILITIES, HOW WE WOULD CONSIDER FUNDING THESE THINGS.
SO THAT, THAT WAS THE WORK THAT WAS DONE ON THE, UM, UH, PILOT FOR AS, UH, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE.
THE OTHER CONVERSATION THAT WE HAD THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT REVOLVED AROUND US RE-LOOKING AT THE CAP, UM, UH, PRESENTER REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO AVOID HAVING ANY PROBLEMS WITH ARTISTS BEING BASICALLY DISRESPECTED BY PRESENTERS.
AND THE IDEA IS THAT WE WOULD HAVE, MY, MY FEELING WAS, AND THEN THE COMMITTEE DISCUSSED THIS, IS THAT CAP SHOULD NOT BE A TALENT AGENCY FOR THE CITY OF DALLAS.
THAT IS WHERE WE HAVE HAD OUR MOST EGREGIOUS PROBLEMS WITH ARTISTS PERFORMING AND, YOU KNOW, NOT BEING RESPECTED.
AND IN MY VIEW, IT WAS NOT SET UP TO DO THAT.
IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE THAT IT WAS INTENDED TO BE A SERVICE TO THE, THE COMMUNITY FOR PEOPLE, FOR ARTISTS TO BE GOING OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY COURSE.
THEY GET A DEEPER REACH INTO THE COMMUNITY.
IT WAS NOT SET UP TO MAKE ARTISTS PERFORM FOR CITY OF DALLAS DEPARTMENTS.
SO I FELT LIKE WE NEEDED TO HAVE A, A MORE, UM, DEFINED RESTRICTION OF WHERE THIS FUNDING GOES AND WHO GETS TO USE IT.
UM, AND THEN THERE NEEDS TO BE AN EVEN MORE CLEAR, UH, CONSEQUENCE IF ARTISTS ARE DISRESPECTED.
YOU KNOW, YOU NEVER GET TO GET ANOTHER CAP ARTIST.
IT'S NOT LIKE YOU GET THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT.
YOU JUST, IF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THESE RULES, THEN YOU DON'T GET ANOTHER CAP ARTIST.
BECAUSE IF WE'RE TALKING ABOUT EQUITY, AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, THE WAY IN WHICH WE ARE SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS, WE CANNOT HAVE THEM GOING OUT IN A PROGRAM WE ARE SPONSORING AND BEING DISRESPECTED BY THE PRESENTER.
UM, THAT'S, AS AN ARTIST, I'M FEELING, YOU KNOW, LIKE REALLY STRONGLY ABOUT THAT.
UM, SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT IS HOW TO TIGHTEN UP THOSE GUIDELINES, HOW TO MAKE SURE THAT THE WAY IN WHICH THE CAP PROGRAM IS UTILIZED IS TO THE SPIRIT OF THAT PROGRAM, WHICH AS I SAID WAS TO BE, IT CAME OUT OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD TOURING PROGRAM, THE NE A'S NEIGHBORHOOD TOURING PROGRAM.
AND IT THEN MORPHED INTO, UH, THE CAP PROGRAM, WHICH, YOU KNOW, WAS, YOU KNOW, THE IDEA OF, YOU KNOW, GETTING MORE ARTISTS INTO THE COMMUNITY.
SO THOSE ARE THE, THOSE ARE THE DISCUSSIONS THAT WE HAD.
AND, AND RHONDA IS GOING TO BE WORKING ON TIGHTENING UP THAT, THAT LANGUAGE SO THAT WE WON'T HAVE ANY FURTHER, UH, SITUATIONS WHERE ARTISTS ARE DISRESPECTED.
VICKY, ANY QUESTIONS? UH, I'M JUST WONDERING, COULD WE GET THAT IS CAN THAT REPORT BE SHARED? YES.
I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS, I THINK IT WAS ONLY SENT OUT TO THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS, BUT WE COULD SEND IT OUT TO THE ENTIRE COMMITTEE, TO THE ENTIRE COMMISSION.
I'VE ASKED THIS BEFORE, I ATTEMPT TO ASK IT BEFORE, AND THIS IS A MARTIN QUESTION, BUT OUR, FOR YOUR STAFF, I WOULD LOVE TO GET INVITATIONS TO ALL OF THE COMMITTEE MEETING MEETINGS RELATED TO THE COMMISSION.
LIKE, I KNOW THEY'RE HAPPENING, BUT, BUT THAT GENERALLY, THAT GOES OUT TO LIKE ALL ON YOUR COMMITTEE WITH THE LINK.
I'M NOT SAYING I WOULD COME EVERY TIME, BUT AS PART OF MY WORK AS A COMMISSIONER, IF I GOT THAT, IF I GOT THAT LINK WHERE I COULD DIAL IN, AND THEN I, I ALSO THINK WE ALREADY HAD THAT DISCUSSION.
YEAH, AND I'M THINK SHE, IT WOULD ALSO HELP US WITH THE LENGTH OF OUR MEETINGS, BECAUSE THOSE OF US WHO HAVE A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN AI OR EQUITY OR FUNDING OR WHATEVER IT IS, IF YOU REALLY WANNA SEE THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF EVERYTHING, YOU KNOW, TRY TO ATTEND THE MEETING THAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE COMMISSION MEETING.
SO, UM, I KNOW THAT, I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE JUST NOW GETTING STAFFED UP, SO THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT THAT IT HASN'T HAPPENED, BUT I HAVE TO PUT THAT BACK ON THE TO-DO LIST, AND I THINK COMMISSIONERS COULD THEN OPT OUT.
IF YOU'RE GETTING AN INVITATION THAT YOU DON'T WANT, YOU COULD OPT OUT AND SEND IT BACK TO WHOEVER'S IN CHARGE AND SAY, DON'T SEND THIS TO ME.
BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT.
WHAT A GREAT AND THOROUGH REPORT.
WE'VE GOT TWO HANDS RAISED ON THE VIRTUAL SCREEN HERE.
I JUST WANTED TO APPLAUD THE WORK, UM, UH, RHONDA AND VICKY AND THE COMMITTEE.
UM, I LOVE THE IDEA OF RESTRICTING HOW THESE FUNDS ARE USED AND WHERE ARTISTS CAN SHOW UP.
I WAS UNFORTUNATELY PRIVY STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO AN ARTIST WHEN THEY WERE DISRESPECTED.
UM, AND THE IMPACT THAT IT HAD ON THIS ARTIST IS SIGNIFICANT, RIGHT? TO THE POINT THAT I GENUINELY DON'T KNOW IF THEY'LL EVER DO ANYTHING WITH US AGAIN AFTER THEIR CYCLE IS OVER, RIGHT AFTER THIS YEAR IS OVER.
AND SO I THINK THAT OUR JOB, IN AS MUCH AS IT IS TO GET THE ART OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY, TO THE POINTS THAT, UH, CHAIRMAN MIKA SAID, I THINK IT'S ALSO OUR JOB TO PROTECT THESE ARTISTS THAT HAVE ENTRUSTED US
[01:15:01]
WITH THEIR CRAFT.THEY HAVE ENTRUSTED US, UM, WITH THEIR SENSITIVITIES AND THEIR BEARING OF THEMSELVES TO THE, TO, TO THE WORLD THAT WE GIVE THEM ACCESS TO.
SO I DO WANNA SAY THAT I, WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS IS HOW IT FEELS AS IF WE ARE STRIVING TO PROTECT THE ARTIST.
BECAUSE THE EXPERIENCE THAT I WAS A PART OF, OR THAT I WAS A WITNESS OF, WE DID NOT, NOT BECAUSE WE DIDN'T TRY, BUT BECAUSE WE WEREN'T GIVEN, WE DIDN'T HAVE THE TOOLS THAT WE NEEDED TO PROTECT THESE SWEET ARTISTS WHO HAD THEIR WORLDS ROCKED AND HONESTLY, FOR NOTHING THAT THEY HAD DONE WRONG.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR, FOR THE WORK ON THIS.
LET ME KNOW WHAT ROOFTOP YOU NEED ME TO SHOUT ABOUT IT FROM, BECAUSE I'M HAPPY TO, BECAUSE THIS, THIS, I MEAN, IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
IT IT, IF WHAT I SAW IS, IF WHAT I SAW WAS THE ONLY EXPERIENCE OF AN ARTIST BEING MISTREATED, IT'S ENOUGH FOR THIS TO MOVE FORWARD.
BUT I WOULD BET THAT IT'S NOT.
AND SO THE FACT THAT THERE IS COLLECTIVE WORK BEING DONE, UM, IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
THERE'S NOTHING TO VOTE FOR, BUT YAY AND
UH, ME, UH, UH, UH, COMMISSIONER OMO AND, UH, COMMISSIONER BLAZE AND I ATTENDED A MEETING AT THE BISHOP ARTS THEATER, AND THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT, UH, FACILITIES.
AND HER FACILITY IN PARTICULAR IS USED BY MULTIPLE ARTISTS, UH, FOR GETTING SUPPORT ON INFRASTRUCTURE, UH, AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.
BUT THESE, THESE FACILITIES ARE OWNED BY, UH, THE ENTITIES, UH, UH, THAT, SO THEY, THEY WERE LOOKING FOR CITY SUPPORT ON, UH, THOSE TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS.
I WAS WONDERING IF YOUR COMMITTEE LOOKED INTO, UH, THAT SORT SORT OF THING.
NO, I SAID THAT, YEAH, THAT WAS SAID.
YEAH, I SAID THAT, THAT, THAT THEY, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS RECOMMENDED WAS A, UM, RENTAL REIMBURSEMENT.
WE USED TO DO THIS, BY THE WAY, SOME YEARS BACK.
UM, BUT A RENTAL REIMBURSEMENT TO THOSE ENTITIES THAT ARE NOT CITY FACILITIES, UM, SO THAT PEOPLE COULD USE THEIR FACILITIES AND THEY COULD GET PAID BY, YOU KNOW, A CONTRACT, YOU KNOW, FROM, FROM US.
SO YES, THAT'S, THAT'S IN ONE OF HER RECOMMENDATIONS IS THAT WE LOOK AT THE WAY IN WHICH WE USE OTHER ARTS FACILITIES THAT ARE NOT CITY OWNED AND, AND REIMBURSE THEM FOR THAT.
SO THE PEOPLE, I DON'T, I DON'T KNOW IF YOUR HEAD IS STILL UP FROM LAST TIME OR IF, UH, IT'S UP ACCIDENTALLY
AND I'M ON MY PHONE SO DISREGARDED.
I KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF RIGHT NOW.
BUT, UH, COMMISSIONER DANIEL HAD HIS HAND UP, THEN IT WENT BACK DOWN.
WAS THAT AN ACCIDENT TOO? UH, IT WAS, BUT I'LL JUST STICK, BUT NO, SORT OF, I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE BLACK BOX THING.
I WAS ACTUALLY IN CONVERSATION WITH COUNCILMAN NVAS AND HE SAID THE EXACT SAME THING.
UM, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE DRINKING FROM THE SAME CITY HALL WATER, BUT, UH, COUNCILMAN NVA DID MENTION THE IDEA OF BEING, OF LOVING, BEING ABLE TO ACTIVATE SPACES THAT AREN'T OURS, TO GIVE PEOPLE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO PERFORM, RIGHT? NOT JUST BLACK BOX, BUT OTHER THEATERS.
BECAUSE LIKE IN WEST DALLAS, WE HAVE SOME, BUT WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH NECESSARILY TO WARRANT THE BURIED TYPES OF PERFORMANCES THAT WE HAVE.
AND SO I ALSO WAS JUST SAYING I LOVE THAT IDEA.
UM, I JUST WANTED TO, UM, UH, ADDRESS WHAT COMMISSIONER DEMANI SAID.
I JUST WANTED TO PUT YOUR MIND AT EASE.
AFTER THE SITUATION HAPPENED, I DID REACH OUT TO THE ARTIST, UH, HAD A ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATION WITH THAT PERSON.
NOW THEY'RE, AND, UH, UNDER PANEL REVIEW RIGHT NOW.
SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN, BUT AT LEAST THEY DID REAPPLY.
'CAUSE I WAS GENUINELY, HE SAID I'M NOT COMING BACK, SO I'M GLAD THAT HE, I THANK YOU.
BASICALLY, THANK YOU FOR RHONDA BEING RHONDA AND, YOU KNOW, CONTINUING TO, CONTINUING TO RHONDA.
UM, WE'RE GONNA TAKE A COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS AND CAN I DO SOMETHING NOW, EVEN THOUGH I DON'T KNOW IF MY HAND IS STILL UP OR NOT? UH, IN JUST A MINUTE, WE'RE OKAY.
WE'RE TRYING TO GO IN ORDER HERE, SO, OKAY, THANKS.
[01:20:01]
SEVERAL YEARS AGO, RYAN FLORES AT THE LCC AND I, UH, AND DAVID FISHER WENT AROUND TO EACH ONE OF THOSE BLACK BOXES AND WE WROTE UP A, OH, I KNOW, A BIG REPORT ON WHAT EACH ONE NEEDED, WHAT WE THOUGHT.COULD BE HOW THOSE COULD BE USED.
HAVE YOU SEEN THAT REPORT? I CERTAINLY HAVE.
I MEAN, THAT, THAT'S WHY I'M SAYING WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED TO DO.
IN ORDER TO MOVE THE AGENDA AFTER TINO, WE'RE GONNA TAKE COMMISSIONER RIO'S QUESTION AND WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO MOVE ON, TINO.
SO MY QUESTION IS RELATED TO GETTING A COPY OF THIS.
UM, CAN, CAN YOU ALSO PROVIDE SOME MORE INFORMATION ON THE METHODOLOGY? 'CAUSE I WAS UNCLEAR, UM, YOU MENTIONED SMALL GROUPS UNDER A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS AN ARTIST.
BUT DID YOLANDA, YOU KNOW, I'D LIKE TO KNOW LIKE WHAT WAS THE SIZE, RIGHT? WHAT, WHO WERE THE ARTISTS? HOW MANY I DON'T HAVE THAT IN THIS REPORT.
SHE GAVE, SHE DID THE REPORT, BUT I DIDN'T ASK FOR A BREAKDOWN OF EVERYBODY SHE TALKED TO.
YOU WANT THAT? WE CAN ASK HER.
CAN YOU, UH, COMMISSIONER URIEL? OKAY, I DON'T HAVE A QUESTION, BUT I, I WAS, UM, MY DISTRICT, MY COMMISSIONER, UH, CITY COUNCIL PERSON ACTUALLY REACHED OUT TO ME AND, UH, THEY WERE ASKING ABOUT, UM, LIBRARY.
THEY WERE ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LIBRARY IN GENERAL.
AND I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S HAPPENING IN EVERY DISTRICT
AND SO IF YOU HAVE, YOU KNOW, UM, IF YOU ARE ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LIBRARY, UM, AND YOU DON'T HAVE A BLACK BOX, IF YOU DON'T MIND MENTIONING THE FOLKS THAT DO HAVE THEM WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO USE THEM IN THE EVENING, UH, ON THE WEEKENDS.
UH, THAT'S GONNA CONCLUDE, UH, THE CULTURAL PLAN AND EQUITY COMMITTEE REPORT.
UM, MARTINE, UH, GOOD EVENING.
NOW I'M GONNA, UM, TAKE ONE ITEM OUT OF QUARTER OF MY STAFF UPDATE.
SO WE HAVE NEW STAFF TO INTRODUCE TODAY AND I WANNA RELIEVE THEM AS THEY'VE BEEN SITTING SO PATIENTLY
SO IF Y'ALL CAN JOIN US AT THE, UH, UH, TABLES, UH, SO WE CAN INTRODUCE THE THREE WHO ARE PRESENT.
UM, THIS IS OBVIOUSLY RELATED TO WHAT I'VE SHARED TIME AND TIME AGAIN, TELL YOU WE'VE BEEN TAKING CARE OF OUR VACANCIES, FILLING THEM ACTIVELY ENGAGED OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS IN ROUNDS OF SELECTION PROCESSES.
I WANT TO THANK MY LEADERSHIP TEAM AS THEY'RE TAKING A SEAT FOR MAKING SURE WE GET THESE SEATS FILLED WITH THE BEST OF US.
SO I HAVE THREE, UH, TO INTRODUCE AND I'LL START TO MY LEFT WITH EXCEL.
QUIN, WHO IS A MEMBER OF GLEN'S TEAM ON OUR FUNDING PROGRAMS TEAM.
UH, SECONDLY, KAYLA JORDAN, ALSO ANOTHER MEMBER OF OUR FUNDING PROGRAMS TEAM IN BLENDS DIVISION.
AND THIRDLY, AND MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU
WE HAVE OUR BOARD AND COMMISSIONS COORDINATOR, EMMANUEL CAST LINEUP.
WE ARE THE NEWEST OF THE BUNCH.
I'LL GIVE YOU EACH A MOMENT TO SHARE A BIT, WHATEVER YOU WOULD, YOU KNOW, BRIEF AND THEN GET OUT.
BUT WE THANK, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO COME AND BE PRESENT.
I'M CEL I USED TO WORK IN COMMUNICATIONS AND NONPROFIT AND I GRADUATED SMU AND CAME STRAIGHT HERE.
I AM FRESHLY OR I STILL CONSIDER MYSELF FAIRLY NEW TO DALLAS.
I MOVED HERE ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS AGO.
UM, AND JUMPED RIGHT INTO THIS.
UM, SUPER EXCITED AND HAPPY TO BE HERE.
UM, IN MY PREVIOUS ROLE I WAS A, UM, PRODUCTION DESIGNER FOR A FEW, UM, FILM AND TV PROJECTS AND WHATNOT.
SO HAPPY TO MAKE THE TRANSITION OVER TO THIS SIDE OF ARTS AND HAPPY TO HELP ARTS.
I GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS YOGA GRANDE VALLEY.
UH, I AM FROM THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY, SO IT'S, UH, MOSTLY MEXICAN CULTURE.
I LIVE IN THE MEXICAN TEXAS BORDER.
UH, I DO COME FROM DEVELOPMENT SERVICES.
I HAVE BEEN WITH THE CITY OF DALLAS FOR TWO YEARS.
I WAS AN ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST TOO BEFORE I GOT HERE AND WORKED FOR THE, WITH THE CITY PLANT COMMISSION FOR THOSE ION.
HAS LOUIS SHOWED YOU THE ROACH
WHO'S LOUIS WHO WE ENSURED THAT THERE WAS A PHONE PASS.
[01:25:01]
IS ALWAYS PHONE CALL AWAY, BUT EMMANUEL'S GONNA DO HIS OWN THING, INCLUDING YES, INCLUDING CALENDAR, THE CALENDAR APPLICATION.SO WILL PLEASE, UM, WE'LL SENDING AN INTRODUCTION IF YOU SO CHOOSE, UH, YOU KNOW, TO MEET AND GREET WITH EMMANUEL ON YOUR OWN TIME, PLEASE DO.
UM, WE WANNA MAKE SURE YOU ARE WELCOME TO HERE, ALL THREE OF YOU.
UM, AND THEN TO ROUND OUT MY STAFF UPDATES, WE HAVE AN EXTERNAL SEARCH THAT IS LIVE FOR AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR ROLE IN OUR OFFICE.
WE WILL EMAIL THAT EXTERNAL SEARCH FIRM POLLY HIRE, WHO DOES QUITE A BIT OF BUSINESS WITH, WITH THE CITY, UH, WHEN WE'RE WORKING EXECUTIVE SEARCH.
UM, UH, SEND IT TO YOU IF YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE THAT POST WITH YOUR NETWORK.
UM, AS, UH, TO SUMMARIZE THE ROLE IN A NUTSHELL, UM, THIS CANDIDATE WOULD HAVE SOME OVERSIGHT OF, UH, THE BUSINESS OPERATIONS, DATA ANALYTICS, UM, SOME OF OUR PROCUREMENT WORK AND CONTRACTING AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE.
IT'S A MISSED, UH, HAD BEEN A MISSED OPPORTUNITY FOR THE OFFICE, BUT NOW WE HAVE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO, UM, STRENGTHEN THAT, UH, MUSCLE THAT WE WORK EVERY DAY.
SO I WILL BE SURE TO SEND THAT WITH YOU SO THAT YOU CAN SHARE EXTERNALLY WITH YOUR NETWORK, NOT TO RECRUIT ON OUR BEHALF, BUT SIMPLY TO SHARE THE INFORMATION ON OUR BEHALF.
WHAT'S THE DEADLINE? IT'S, THE RECRUITMENT WAS OPEN ONE WEEK AGO.
MY UNDERSTANDING IS IT WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR 60 DAYS.
SO I'LL SEND IT TO YOU, UH, AGAIN, UH, BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.
UM, WE WOULD ENCOURAGE YOUR NETWORK TO JUST PLUS WEEKLY.
UM, SO THAT, THAT'S THE CLOSE OF MY STAFF UPDATES OUT OF ORDER.
UM, BACK IN ORDER AS IT RELATES, OH, SORRY.
IF YOU HAD ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GALLERY.
UM, MARTI PARK HISTORICAL MARKER, DEDICATION THIS, AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ATTENDED OUR PUBLIC ART DEDICATION FOR SHADOW LINES AT MARR PARK, UH, YOU MAY RECALL, UH, THAT THERE WAS MENTION, UH, BY MR. ED GRAY, THAT THE HISTORICAL MARKERS, UH, ALIGNED WITH THAT SITE WERE NOT QUITE READY, UM, UH, THE DAY AND WEEK OR TIME THAT WE HELD THAT MARKET DE UH, THE PUBLIC ART DEDICATION.
SO NOW, UH, THE HISTORICAL MARKERS ARE READY AND THE PARKS DEPARTMENT IS HOSTING, UH, THIS DEDICATION ON SATURDAY, THIS MONTH, UPCOMING SATURDAY.
THIS IS NOT AN OAC EVENT PER SE, AT, WE'RE NOT COLLABORATING ANY, UM, MORE OR LESS, HOWEVER WE WANNA BRING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION IN THE EVENT.
10:00 AM ON SATURDAY MORNING AT MARS PARK.
UM, UH, OPENED BY PARK BOARD CHAIR AND, UH, THE MAYOR WILL BE PRESENT AS WELL AS, UM, THIS INTERIM CITY MANAGER.
SO IF YOU SO CHOOSE, PLEASE, UH, MAKE YOUR, YOUR PRESENCE, UH, FELT THERE.
UH, IF YOU NEED A CALENDAR HOLD, WE'RE HAPPY TO PROBABLY PUT THAT ON YOUR CALENDAR IF YOU REQUIRE ONE.
BUT AGAIN, IT'S, WE JUST WANNA ENSURE WE CLOSE THAT LOOP, AS IT WAS MENTIONED AT OUR PUBLIC ART DEDICATION.
UM, SECONDLY, I WANTED TO SHARE A BIT ABOUT A FREEDOM TRAIL APP, UH, THAT WE ARE, UH, ABOUT TO CROSS THE FINISH LINE IN LAUNCHING.
UM, THE FREEDOM TRAIL APP WAS BIRTHED AS AN IDEA LAST YEAR, TEENTH.
UM, SO WE'RE WORKING WITH REMEMBERING BLACK DALLAS AND, UM, THE VERY POPULAR HISTORIAN, UH, MS. DIA, WHO HAVE CRAFTED, UH, MS. FREEDOM TRAIL APP IS A DIGITIZED, UH, OWED TO, UH, AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY HERE IN THIS, IN DALLAS.
THE APP WILL BE LAUNCHED IN PHASES, UM, ANNUALLY UNTIL, UH, THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE.
THE FIRST PHASE HAS A FOCUS ON ANTEBELLUM, UM, AND FAIR PARK AND A FEW OTHER SITES IN SOUTH DALLAS, YOU WILL RECEIVE AN OPTIONAL INVITATION TO TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE APP BEFORE THE HARD LAUNCH.
UM, IT'S, UH, LIVE ONLY FOR A FEW STAKEHOLDERS WHO JUST NEED TO KIND OF TEST IT.
UM, AND THEN WE ARE THIS, AT THIS POINT, UM, FINALIZING THE HOSTING SO THAT IT CAN GO LIVE FOR THE PUBLIC AT LARGE.
UM, AND AGAIN, IT'S, UH, VERY MUCH RELATED TO WHAT THE RACIAL EQUITY PLAN CHARGES US TO DO.
UM, WHICH IS ONE BEING, UM, MET THE GOAL BEING MET BY THE ORAL HISTORIES PROJECT.
AND SEPARATELY, THIS FREEDOM TRAIL APP, UM, DIGITIZING, PRESERVING BLACK HISTORY HERE IN DALLAS, UM, AND ENSURING THAT FOR STORIES UNTOLD, OR STORIES THAT MAY JUST BE RARELY TOLD THAT WE'RE MAKING THAT INFORMATION ACCESSIBLE.
[01:30:01]
SO I'M EXCITED IF YOU SEE THE INVITATION AND YOU'RE AVAILABLE.UH, WHEN, UH, THE EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS, UH, INVITE COMMISSIONERS TO TAKE THE VIRTUAL TOUR, I HOPE YOU'LL, UH, MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE OR HOPEFULLY BE ABLE TO CO COLLABORATE WITH THEM SO THAT YOU CAN, IT'S REALLY, REALLY COOL IF YOU'RE AN APP PERSON.
I'M, YOU KNOW, I'M NOT TECH, I'M TECH GIRL, BUT IT'S VERY, VERY COOL.
UM, AND I'M PROUD THAT WE CAN, UM, USE TECHNOLOGY TO CONTINUE TO SHARE, UH, WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT DALLAS.
UH, THAT'S, THAT, THAT'S THE CLOSE OF MY UPDATES.
UH, BEFORE WE ADJOURN, I SEE THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS HIGHLIGHTED HERE.
I WANNA CALL OUT THE UPCOMING, UH, QUALITY OF LIFE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMITTEE MEETING.
IT WAS POSTPONED FROM, UH, JUNE 17TH TO JUNE 25TH, WHICH IS THIS UPCOMING TUESDAY.
UH, THE CHAIR POSTPONED IT BECAUSE HE WAS IN THE TOWN.
MANY DEPARTMENTS ARE BRIEFING A DEPARTMENT BUDGET OVERVIEW, WHICH, UH, IS REALLY JUST THAT IT'S QUITE, UM, BASIC, IF YOU WILL.
MOST DEPARTMENTS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO THIS DATE, TO BRIEF THEIR COMMITTEE OF OVERSIGHT BY WAY OF A PRESENTATION.
UH, THE CHAIR AS OF TODAY HAS CHANGED HIS, HAS REQUESTED THAT THE
SO WE'LL BE PRESENT TO TAKE QUESTIONS IN THAT SETTING.
UM, AND THE OTHER DEPARTMENTS ARE SANITATION ANIMAL SERVICES,
BUT JUST FOR YOUR ATTENTION, YOU KNOW, WHEN THEY PUBLISH THE MATERIALS, IT'LL BE THERE IN THE MEMO.
I, I'D BE SURPRISED IF YOU HAD ANY PARTICULAR QUESTIONS, BUT IT'S REALLY JUST AN OVERVIEW.
MY QUESTION IS JUST AROUND THE, MOST OF US ARE PROBABLY AWARE THAT MOST DEPARTMENTS ARE BEING ASKED TO CUT 6%.
SO THIS IS NOT, THIS IS NOT THAT.
THIS, YEAH, THIS IS A BUDGET OVERVIEW.
I THINK YOU'RE REFERENCING WHAT HAPPENS, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE CITY MANAGER, RIGHT.
WELL, GIVEN THAT WE'RE WORKING OVER THE SUMMER AND ALLOCATIONS ANYWAY TO DO SOME OF THE GRANT PROGRAMS, AND IF WE NEED TO GO DO ANY TALKING TO OUR COUNCIL PEOPLE, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO HAVE SOME TALKING POINTS ABOUT THAT BEFORE AUGUST.
'CAUSE IN AUGUST THEY'RE LIKE DEEP IN THEIR TOWN HALLS AND THEY'RE GETTING, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE GETTING PEOPLE FROM ALL DIRECTIONS ALL OVER THE PLACE.
SO AS YOU KIND OF HAVE THOSE DISCUSSIONS, IT WOULD BE SURE.
WELL, YOU KNOW, I, UM, SURE, SURE.
I JUST WANTED TO, UH, REASSURE YOU SINCE I CHAIR THAT COMMITTEE THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH GLEN ABOUT IT.
UM, AND I, AND, UH, WHAT THE, WHAT THE STEPS ARE.
AND SO WE'RE GONNA MAKE SURE THAT WHENEVER THEY'RE NOT AT THAT STAGE YET, BUT AS SOON AS WE'RE AT THAT STAGE, I'VE ALREADY REQUESTED THAT ON BEHALF OF THE ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE SINCE WE DO WORK IN JULY.
I WAS RIGHT THERE, BUT I DID NOT, I DID NOT KNOW IF YOU, IF YOU KNEW THAT I HAD ALREADY JUMPED IN AND DONE THAT.
SO IT WAS QUITE HELPFUL BECAUSE, UH, SOME OF THE, RIGHT.
AND THEN OF COURSE, AS USUAL, WE'LL BE BRIEFING Y'ALL IN AUGUST.
'CAUSE THAT'S GENERALLY UPCOMING BUDGET NEXT STAFF.
BEFORE WE ADJOURN, UH, DOES ANY COMMISSIONER HAVE ANY PARTICULAR EVENT YOU WANT? YOU JUST ACTUALLY GOT IT GLEN, ON IT.
UH, YOU JUST ACTUALLY GOT IN YOUR EMAIL, THE INVITATION.
UM, I AM COMING TO THE END OF MY PHASE ONE MASTER PROJECT.
UM, WE BE UNVEILING THE MARKET.
WE JUST STARTED THROUGH JULY 6TH.
UM, THE, UM, COLLABORATION WITH KINFOLK, WITH THE AR EXPERIENCE, IT'S ALL DONE.
AND SO WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE DOING IS HAVING A NINE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING ON THE, UH, JULY 6TH.
WE'LL BE UNVEILING THE MARKERS AT NW HARLEY AND, AND WHEN PEOPLE WILL HAVE A MAP 'CAUSE KNOW WHERE ALL THE OTHERS ARE.
AND THEN THREE O'CLOCK THAT AFTERNOON, WE'LL SCREEN THE FINAL MINI DOCUMENTARY THAT CHRISTIAN VAZQUEZ DID ON THIS PROJECT.
AND THEN THROUGH, UM, THE BEGINNING OF THE FALL, I'LL BEGIN TO DO TOURS FOR VARIOUS PEOPLE.
I'D LIKE TO BE ABLE TO DO ONE FOR THE COMMISSION, UM, TO, YOU KNOW, LET YOU ALL SEE WHERE ALL THESE MARKERS ARE AND WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THAT.
AS WE ANNOUNCED THE SECOND PHASE, WHICH IS THE MEXICAN AMERICAN PHASE, WHEN I WILL TURN OVER LEAD ARTISTS TO FAZ, AND THEN I'LL JUST BE A COHORT ARTIST IN THE, IN THE MIX.
UM, AND FAZ WILL LEAD THAT DEAL WITH MICHAEL SOTO AND, UM, DR.
SO I HANDED OUT THE PRIDE BLOCK PARTY, WHICH IS THE LARGEST PRIDE EVENT IN DALLAS, UH, NORTH TEXAS, TENS AND TENS OF THOUSANDS
[01:35:01]
AND GREAT LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT OUTDOORS.AND THEN I ALSO WANT TO SAY YES, UH, THAT, UH, I DID A REMEMBERING BLACK DALLAS, UM, TOUR THIS PAST WEEKEND, THE BUS TOUR, WHICH WAS AN ARTS ACTIVATE RECIPIENT.
SO IT WAS REALLY, REALLY, LIKE, IT BLEW MY MIND.
LIKE I'M REALLY BUMMED, I HADN'T DONE THE OTHERS BEFORE, BUT THERE'S ONE, UH, ONE OR TWO MORE COMING UP.
AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO DO IT TO SEE HOW, UM, THESE DOLLARS REALLY JUST, IT WAS MADE AN IMPACT REALLY.
ANY OTHER LIMITATIONS TO ANYTHING? IF NOT, UH, I, IF NOT, UH, WE CALL THIS MEETING AURN AT SIX OH EIGHT.
YOU TURN SO YOU CAN WAVE BY TO THEM.
