[Senior Affairs Commission on September 16, 2024.]
UM, NICOLE, HAVE YOU CHECKED THE ATTENDANCE ON EVERYONE? DO I NEED TO DO A ROLL CALL? OKAY.UM, PORTIA, YOU'RE BACK IN BUSINESS.
UH, VERMA, I THINK I SAW YOU WALK IN.
MAR MARILYN AND MARIAN ARE HERE.
DEBBIE AUSTIN, ARE YOU ON THE YES.
UM, OUR ILLUSTRIOUS LEADER, UH, J PETER KLEIN IS ILL TODAY.
HE WAS BABYSITTING HIS GRANDCHILD.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS? UH, YOU GET WHATEVER THEY HAD.
HE'S GOT A, SO, UM, HE WAS UP ALL NIGHT IN THE BATHROOM.
UM, AND THAT'S ALL I'LL HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT.
HE'S PROBABLY ASLEEP AT THIS POINT, ALTHOUGH HE MIGHT JOIN US.
UM, KAREN IS HERE AND MIKE IS HERE, SO I THINK WE'RE READY TO GO.
UM, ARE THERE ANY PUBLIC SPEAKERS THAT ARE JOINING? THERE'S NO ONE IN THE AUDIENCE.
UM, THE NEXT THING IS FOR US TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM OUR AUGUST 19TH MEETING.
ARE THERE SOMEONE MAKE A MOVE TO APPROVE THEM? I MOVED ACCEPTANCE OF THE MINUTES FROM THE MONDAY, AUGUST 19TH, 2024 MEETING.
IS THAT GOOD? IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION OR ANY ERRORS THAT ANYONE SAW DURING THAT TIME PERIOD OR WHEN THEY READ IT BEING NONE? I DID SEE A TYPO.
UM, I THINK THE, ON PAGE TWO, ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH, IT SAYS THE SESSION THAT PETE WENT TO SEE AT THE SENIOR SOURCE WAS CONDUCTED BY THE ADMINISTRATION OF COMMUNITY LIVING.
MAYBE ADMINISTRATION NEEDS TO BE ADMINISTRATIVE CAPITALIZED.
UM, ANYWAY, BUT THAT WAS PRETTY, UM, THAT WAS IT THAT I SAW.
SO IS THAT THE TITLE OF THE I THINK IT'S THE TITLE OF THE ORGANIZATION.
UM, ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMENTS OTHER THAN THAT? THEN WE'LL HAVE A VOTE TO APPROVE THE MINUTES, ALL SAY AYE.
AYE WA IF YOU'RE ON THE OUT THERE.
ANY DISSENTING VOTES? EXCUSE ME.
AND YOU RECOGNIZE THE SECOND, JUST THE PORT OF BOARD
AND SO THE MINUTES HAVE BEEN APPROVED? YES.
UM, SO WE, UH, I'M SUPPOSED TO REMIND YOU ABOUT THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT.
IT IS OPEN, WE DO HAVE PEOPLE ON VIDEO.
IF YOU ARE A, A COMMISSIONER, YOU SHOULD BE VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES, UM, SO THAT YOU'RE NOT MISSING THIS SESSION.
UM, SO UPDATE ON THE LISTENING SESSIONS, THE SENIOR LISTENING SESSIONS.
UM, WE HAD A FABULOUS SESSION THIS LAST WEEK.
VERNA, UM, DID A, JUST A GREAT JOB.
UH, I'M SURE YOU SPENT A LOT MORE TIME ON IT THAN I SPENT ON MINE.
HOW WAS IT? AND, UM, WHO ELSE? THERE WAS SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
AND, UH, OUR NEWEST MEMBER, I THINK THEY PUT NAME ON, UH, TARITA.
TERRACETA WAS THERE AS WELL AND BROUGHT HER GUEST WITH HER.
BUT, UH, WE HAD, HAD, UH, OUR GOAL WAS TO HAVE A 100 PARTICIPANTS THERE, AND WE PUT OUT 104 TABLES, I MEAN, I'M SORRY, 104 CHAIRS, AND ENDED UP HAVING TO PUT OUT MORE GOOD.
AND, UH, WE DID GO THROUGH THE DATA.
UH, WE HAD, UH, THE CONSTITUENTS THAT WERE THERE DISCUSS THREE PRIORITIES FOR THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT NEEDED IMPROVEMENT THE MOST.
AND, UH, THEN THEY, YOU KNOW, KIND OF TALKED OUT WITHOUT EACH GROUP TO DO THAT.
AND WE COLLECTED THE PRIORITIES THAT WE HEARD THE MOST AND HAVE FIVE GROUPS.
AND THE, UH, CONSTITUENTS WOULD SIGN UP FOR THOSE GROUPS AND THOSE WOULD BECOME WORKING GROUPS SO THAT THEY CAN BEGIN WORKING ON, UH, THOSE CONCERNS.
UH, I HAD A COUPLE OF CALLS AFTER OF THE SESSION.
UH, WE HAD TWO, TWO, UH, TEENAGE BOYS THAT WERE KILLED EACH SIDE, UH, IN THE OAK CLIFF AREA
[00:05:01]
AND ACROSS TO DISTRICT THREE.AND SO A SUGGESTION HAS MADE, BEEN MADE THAT, REGARDING SAFETY SINCE SO MANY OF US WALK DURING THE DAY AND, UM, ARE FEARFUL OF DOING THAT NOW.
IN, IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE, OF THE, OF THE DISTRICT THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO A, UM, GUN BUY BACK.
THAT'S GONNA BE OUR FIRST ACTIVITY TO, UH, DO THAT GUN, UH, BUY BACK AND TO LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW THAT WE AREN'T JUST TALKING, BUT WE'RE GONNA FOLLOW THROUGH AND DO SOME THINGS.
ANOTHER THING AROUND SAFETY, THEY WERE SAYING THAT THERE WERE SOME AREAS THAT NEED TO BE SENIOR ZONES.
AND SO WE'RE GOING, GOING GET WITH THE CITY TO SEE WHAT THEY WILL ACTUALLY ALLOW US TO POST FOR SIGNS, AREAS WHERE A LOT OF US WALK AND DO OTHER THINGS, THAT IT'S, YOU KNOW, IT'S A SENIOR ZONE.
AND, UH, WE HAD LUNCH AFTERWARDS AND MANY OF THE CONSTITUENTS REMAINED AFTERWARDS.
UH, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE FINISHED.
WE HAD A SENIOR BAND, UH, THAT WAS THERE TO PROVIDE MUSIC THROUGHOUT THE, THE MORNING.
SO I THINK THAT THE THING THAT WAS MOST IMPACTFUL FOR ME, AND I'VE DONE MINE, UM, WAS THE ACTION THAT VERNA REQUESTED OUT OF THE PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED.
AND THAT WAS, OKAY, WE'VE GOT ISSUES.
WE CAN'T JUST POINT THE FINGER.
WE GOT, WE MUST GET INVOLVED OURSELVES.
AND, UM, GETTING PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IS REALLY WHAT WE NEED, RIGHT.
IS TO GET SENIORS INVOLVED IN WHAT WE'RE DOING, UH, TO BE A STRONGER VOICE.
AND BASICALLY WHAT I SHARED WITH THEM WAS THAT IF YOU BROUGHT UP A CONCERN, I EXPECT TO SEE YOUR NAME ON A COMMITTEE LINE UP SHEET.
WERE WERE THESE BREAKOUT SESSIONS, SO IT WAS ORGANIZED INTO BREAKOUT SESSIONS WHERE NO, NO.
THAT I THINK THAT WOULD'VE TAKEN TOO LONG.
WE HAD, UH, THEY WERE, TABLES OF 10 CAME IN.
UH, THEY SAT AT THE TABLE THAT THEY CHOSE.
AND SO YOU REALLY HAD PEOPLE ACROSS NEIGHBORHOODS.
AND IN WALKING, AS I WALKED BY, THEY WERE DISCUSSING, UH, REALLY, UH, THE, SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT THEY WERE, THEY, THAT THEY HAD WERE THE SAME.
SO THEY GOT A TABLE THEN PRESENTED.
AND THAT'S WHAT THEY CAME PER TABLE.
IT WAS A 10 MINUTE DISCUSSION.
WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST, THE 10 MINUTES? AND THEN THOSE WERE DISCUSSING WITH THE BROADER TABLE.
UM, SO THAT SOUNDS LIKE A KIND OF A COMBINATION BETWEEN SOME OF YES.
THE BREAKOUT SESSIONS, DAVID'S SESSION WHERE YOU ESSENTIALLY, UH, LED THE DISCUSSION AMONG EVERYBODY.
BUT THIS WAS KIND OF A HYBRID OF THAT.
YEAH, I, I, I REALLY, AS I SHARED WITH THEM, I WENT THROUGH THE DATA QUICKLY, BUT WE WANTED TO HEAR FROM THEM VERSUS HEARING FROM ME.
AND SO WE WANTED TO ALLOW THEM TO EXPRESS ANYTHING REGARDING CONCERNS BEFORE WE EXPRESSED ANYTHING.
CAN I JUST ASK, WHAT WERE THE TOP THREE CONCERNS THAT YOU WOULD SAY THE TOP THREE? WELL, WE REALLY HAD FIVE, UH, SAFETY.
SAFETY AND SEVERAL AREAS REGARDING TRANSPORTATION.
UH, THE GUN SAFETY AS WELL AS DOGS, LOOSE DOGS.
ONE WAS, UH, DID I SAID TRANSPORTATION.
UH, THERE WAS CONCERN ABOUT SCHOOL BUSES BLOCKING ENTRANCES OF DIFFERENT APARTMENT COMPLEXES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
WHAT'S ANOTHER ONE? I SHOULD'VE BROUGHT THOSE.
SO THE COURT WILL BE PREPARED, I'M SURE.
BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE DO LIKE SHE'S DONE WITH THE OTHERS.
UM, BUT IN THE, IN THE HER TIME PURPOSES.
MARYANNE, DID YOU, DID WE, DID YOU HAVE YOURS BEFORE OUR LAST MEETING OR SINCE THEN? IT, IT WAS BEFORE.
AND COMING OF KAREN, YOUR NEXT WEEK? THIS WEEK? NO, NEXT WEEK.
AND THEN I THINK THERE'S GONNA BE A COMBINED ONE.
IT'S TWO DISTRICTS, RIGHT? IT'S THREE.
WELL, ACTUALLY IT'S THREE AND PLUS THE LGBT COMMUNITY.
AND SO WHAT DISTRICTS IS, WILL THAT BE IT'S 2 8, 9 9
AND WHEN IS THAT ONE GONNA BE? IT'S THE 27TH.
NO, IT WAS OCTOBER 12TH, ISN'T IT? OCTOBER 12TH.
OH, I'M GOING TO SOMETHING ON THIS SECOND.
SOMEBODY'S, UH, WE'RE GONNA DO IT IN THE
[00:10:01]
MORNING.UH, NINE TO 12 ON NINE UNTIL, IS THERE FLYERS BACK THERE FOR THE REST OF THEM? GREAT.
SO YOU GUYS PICK UP YOUR FLYERS SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT, IF YOU CAN.
THEY HAVE BEEN VERY, UH, INFORMATIVE AND, UH, DEFINITELY WORTHWHILE GOING TO.
UM, SO, UM, ANYTHING ELSE, QUESTIONS ON SENIOR LISTENING THAT WANTS TO GET OUT AT THIS POINT? WELL, I, I'M JUST GONNA SAY, YOU KNOW, DISTRICT 14 IS NEXT WEEK AT EXCEL PARK, AND I DO HAVE FLYERS AND PAUL RIDLEY LOOKS A LOT BETTER THAN ME, BUT IT'S GREAT.
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, WE'D LIKE TO GO INTO NEW BUSINESS AND, UH, WE HAVE TWO FINE WOMEN HERE, ANN MCKINLEY AND JANE HUNLEY.
THEY ARE, UH, REPRESENTING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY INITIATIVE FOR DALLAS.
AND BE CAREFUL, BECAUSE I THINK JANE KNOWS KAREN, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME RELATIONSHIPS THERE.
SO WE, THE, THE TV CAMERAS CAN SEE YOU, SO IF YOU WOULD PRESENT FROM THAT PODIUM, SO, YEAH, BUT I'M IN THE WAY.
OH, YOU CAN COME SEE HERE NEXT TO ME.
WOULD THAT WORK? ME? I NOT IN THE WAY RIGHT HERE.
AND YOU CAN HEAR ME GONNA BACK INTO YOU.
DAVID, CAN YOU HEAR ME? DOWN RIGHT.
I'M ANNE AND I AM PART OF AN INITIATIVE IN DALLAS CALLED DEMENTIA FRIENDLY DALLAS.
YOU HAVE RECEIVED THE PRESENTATION, SO I'M NOT GOING TO GO THROUGH ALL THE FACTS AND FIGURES.
I SHARED THOSE WITH YOU BECAUSE MANY OF THEM ARE THE MOST RECENT FROM THE 2024 ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION.
MOST OF THESE ARE NATIONAL DATA.
THE POINT OF ALL THESE FIGURES IS THAT OUR, UH, THIS ALZHEIMER'S AND DEMENTIA IS A GROWING NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY, IN OUR NATION, AND GLOBALLY.
UM, DEMENTIA IMPACTS NOT JUST THE PERSON WHO'S RECEIVED A DIAGNOSIS, BUT IT IMPACTS CAREGIVERS.
IT IMPACTS OUR COMMUNITY, IT IMPACTS BUSINESSES.
AND SO, THEREFORE, WITH THAT, ALL OF US SHOULD HAVE AN INPUT AND A CONCERN FOR HOW WE PLAN TO HANDLE THIS NEED IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
I DO WANNA SPECIFICALLY POINT OUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS NOT JUST AN OLD DISEASE, AND IT DOESN'T JUST AFFECT IMPACT OLDER PEOPLE.
WE HAVE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE IN OUR, UM, THAT ARE WORKING, THAT ARE YOUNGER, WHO ARE IN THE CARE PARTNER ROLE.
AND THEY WILL REPORT TO YOU THAT THIS IS GREATLY IMPACTING THEIR ABILITY TO WORK, TO MAINTAIN THEIR HOURS, UM, TO MAINTAIN THEIR BENEFITS, AND IN SOME INSTANCES, EVEN MAINTAIN THEIR JOBS.
WHEN I SAY THE WORD DEMENTIA, I OFTEN ASK PEOPLE, WHAT COMES TO MIND? WHAT IS THE ONE WORD THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN WE SAY THE WORD DEMENTIA? DOES ANYBODY WANNA MEMORY, MEMORY? ANYBODY ELSE HAVE MENTAL FUNCTIONING MEN? MENTAL FUNCTIONING? ANY, ANYTHING ELSE? ANGER.
BUT WERE ANY OF THESE WORDS POSITIVE? THEY WERE NOT POSITIVE.
AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE TODAY, BECAUSE WE WANT TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE VIEW DEMENTIA AND THE WAY WE VIEW PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S.
DEMENTIA IMPACTS MEMORY COMMUNICATION, WHICH IS A BASIC HUMAN NEED.
AND THEN THE NEXT ONE, IT IMPACTS THE ABILITY, THINK AND PROBLEM SOLVE.
THE ABILITY TO SEQUENCE AND COMPLETE EVERYDAY TASK.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS, DECISION MAKING, VISION, HEARING, AS YOU SAID, IT CONTROLS, IT'S THE BRAIN AND THE BRAIN CONTROLS OUR ENTIRE BEING.
SO ALZHEIMER'S BEGINS OVER 20 YEARS BEFORE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS BEGINS.
AND I'M USING THE WORDS ALZHEIMER'S AND DEMENTIA, INTERCHANGEABLE.
AND I WANNA SAY DEMENTIA IS AN UMBRELLA TERM.
IT'S A, A GROUP OF SYMPTOMS. AND THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT DISEASES, WHICH ARE, ARE THAT CREATE A DEMENTIA, RIGHT? SO THIS IS A GROUP OF SYMPTOMS. AND FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS PRESENTATION, I'M GOING TO USE THE WORD DIMENSION AND BE USING THESE WORDS INTERCHANGEABLY.
ALZHEIMER'S IS THE MOST PREVALENT WITH ABOUT 60 TO 80% OF YOUR DIAGNOSES TODAY ARE ALZHEIMER'S.
[00:15:01]
WORDS THAT YOU MIGHT HEAR ARE VASCULAR DEMENTIA, LEWY BODY DEMENTIA, FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA.UM, AND THEN THERE'S EVEN A PARKINSON'S DEMENTIA.
BUT THE NUMBERS YOU HAVE ARE SPECIFIC TO ALZHEIMER'S.
AND THE, ACTUALLY, THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION HAS STARTED INCLUDING OTHER DEMENTIAS.
AND THOSE NUMBERS DO COME FROM, UH, ACTUAL DEATH CERTIFICATES.
SO, UH, DEMENTIA WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BRAIN NEURONS THAT OPERATES EVERY FUNCTION OF OUR BODY.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO US? WELL, WHAT WE'RE GONNA SEE IS WE'RE GONNA HAVE DALLAS RESIDENTS WHO ARE OUT SHOPPING FOR GROCERIES, WHO HAVE DEMENTIA.
THEY'RE DRIVING ON OUR STREETS.
THEY'RE WORKING, THEY'RE PAYING BILLS AND TAXES.
THEY'RE TRYING TO REPORT A UTILITY OUTAGE, RIDE THE BUS, NAVIGATE THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, AND THEY ARE OFTEN PREY TO SCAMMERS.
OUR CITY NEEDS TO BE PREPARED FOR GREATER NUMBER OF RESIDENTS WITH THESE DISEASES.
AND ONE SOLUTION WOULD BE FOR DALLAS TO BECOME DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY IS A GLOBAL INITIATIVE THAT WAS FOUNDED IN 20, IN 2004 IN JAPAN, IN THE UNITED STATES.
IT STARTED AS A GRASSROOTS EFFORT IN 2015.
AND IT'S BASED ON A STRUCTURE OF AXON ALZHEIMER'S, WHICH IS AN ALL VOLUNTEER MODEL FROM MINNESOTA IN THE UNITED STATES.
WE ROLLED IT OUT FIRST IN EIGHT MARKETS.
THOSE EIGHT MARKETS, THEN, UH, AS A TEST PILOT.
AND IT'S NOW IN 40 DIFFERENT STATES.
IN TEXAS, WE HAVE EIGHT DIFFERENT CITIES WHO ARE WORKING TO BECOME DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
AND MAY I SAY, IN OUR, IN OUR PERSPECTIVE, WE ARE ALWAYS WORKING TOWARDS, THERE'S NOT A CHECKLIST AND A C CHECK BOX.
WE'RE GOING TO SAY, WE ARE DONE BECAUSE WE'RE NOT DONE.
THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE TO HELP TOUCH REACH IN DALLAS.
SO, THE GOAL OF DEMENTIA FRIENDLY IS TO CREATE A BETTER LIFE FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA.
WE WANT OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS WITH DEMENTIA TO BE ABLE TO LIVE, AGE, AND THRIVE IN COMMUNITY.
A COMMON GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE STIGMA AND ISOLATION.
THAT IS, THAT IS WHAT WE ARE SET OUT TO DO.
WE DO THAT BY INCREASING EDUCATION AND SUPPORT.
WHEN YOU CAN INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE BASE, YOU CAN IMPACT PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS AND THE WAY THAT THEY THINK TOWARDS SOMEONE.
IN THE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY, UM, ENVIRONMENTS, WE LOOK AT, UH, ATTACKING THIS, IF YOU WILL, WITH A COMMUNITY-WIDE RESPONSE.
WE LOOK AT OUR CITY IN SECTORS, AND IT'S A STRONG BELIEF THAT EVERY SECTOR HAS A ROLE.
THESE SECTORS REPRESENT HEALTHCARE, THE FULL CARE THROUGH THE CONTINUUM, BUSINESSES, FAITH COMMUNITIES, LEGAL AND FINANCIAL PLANNING, EMERGENCY PLANNING, AND FIRST RESPONDERS, TRANSPORTATION, PUBLIC SPACES, AND NEIGHBORS EVERY DAY, RESIDENTS AND NEIGHBORS.
AND A NEW, A NEW SECTOR THAT'S NOT REPRESENTED IN OUR GRAPHIC IS AIRPORTS.
AGAIN, THIS CALLS FOR A COMMUNITY-WIDE RESPONSE, WHICH INCLUDES OUR CITY ENDORSEMENT AND SUPPORT.
DALLAS STARTED IN 2018 WHEN JULIET FOWLER COMMUNITIES CONVENED MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE REPRESENTING ALL SECTORS.
AT THAT POINT IN TIME, WE WERE ABLE TO ENGAGE KEY LEADERS TO SERVE ON AN ACTION TEAM LEADING EACH SECTOR.
WE IMPLEMENTED A SURVEY TO ANALYZE THE SERVICE GAPS IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THEN WE DEVELOPED AND ACTIVATED OUR PLAN OF ACTION BASED ON THE FEEDBACK THAT WE GOT.
AND BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MANY DIFFERENT EXPERTS THAT WORK WITH US, WE MADE A NATIONAL APPLICATION TO BEGIN THE WORK OF BECOMING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
AND JULIET FOWLER COMMUNITY SERVES AS THE, AS THE ADMINISTRATOR AND FISCAL SPONSOR.
WE DO HAVE A WEBSITE, WHICH WE JUST LAUNCHED THIS YEAR.
AND THIS WEBSITE IS PURPOSEFUL TO HAVE ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES THAT EXIST HERE IN DALLAS.
WE WANTED TO VERY MUCH MAKE OURSELVES OF AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA, FIND WAYS AND FIND THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED.
OUR WEBSITE FOCUSES ON THINGS THAT WILL REDUCE STIGMA AND ISOLATION.
OF COURSE, AS I SAID, WE STARTED IN 2018 AND WE ALL EXPERIENCED
[00:20:01]
COVID.AND THE COVID IMPACT, UH, IMPACTED US AS WELL.
DALLAS HAD TO PAUSE OUR FOCUS ON, BECAUSE WE WERE ALL CARING FOR OLDER ADULTS.
DEFENSE, DEMENTIA FRIENDLY DALLAS LEADERSHIP, UH, EXPERIENCED GREAT CHANGE BECAUSE THERE WERE CHANGES IN EMPLOYMENT MOVES AND, AND RETIREMENT WITHIN OUR WORK GROUPS.
UM, THE SENIOR INDUSTRY HAS EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT WORKFORCE SHORTAGE.
I WILL SAY THAT NATIONALLY, OVER 400,000 CAREGIVERS, DIRECT CAREGIVERS LEFT THE INDUSTRY.
UM, IT IS REBOUNDED, BUT THERE ARE STILL 130,000 POSITIONS KNOWN OPEN IN THE COUNTRY.
AND OUR NUMBERS ARE NOT, ARE NOT SHRINKING.
WE ARE STILL NOT OPERATING SERVICES AT FULL CAPACITY.
AND SO THEREFORE, WITH ALL OF THAT DA VENTURE FRIENDLY, DALLAS CHOSE TO REALIGN OUR PRIORITIES AND INITIATIVES.
WE DIDN'T ABANDON THE SECTOR APPROACH.
AND SO THEREFORE, OUR CURRENT INITIATIVES ARE REALLY FOCUSED ON THE TWO PRIORITIES OF ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION.
WE HAVE A FREE SERVICE, WHICH IS CALLED DEMENTIA FRIENDS, EDUCATION, AND DEMENTIA.
FRIENDS EDUCATION IS INTENDED TO CHANGE AND IMPACT PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
MY RESPONSIBILITY, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, US AS PEOPLE AND NEIGHBORS WALKING IN OUR COMMUNITY AND IN THE GROCERY STORES AND IN OUR FAITH COMMUNITIES.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AT WORK TAKES ON AN OPPORTUNITY.
WE HAVE A A AN EDUCATION TRAINING FOR THAT.
BUT THERE, WE'RE GIVING SIMILAR INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS DEMENTIA AND COMMUNICATION TIPS AND THAT SORT OF THING.
BUT WE'RE ASKING ORGANIZATIONS AND BUSINESSES TO TAKE ON A BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND TO REFLECT ON THEIR OPPORTUNITIES TO BETTER SERVE THEIR CUSTOMERS.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY FAITH COMMUNITIES IS A SIMILAR OPPORTUNITY.
AND THEN DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ENGAGE IS WHERE WE ARE SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT, UM, OF THE RESPITE PROGRAMS, UH, MEMORY CAFES AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR CAREGIVERS.
SO THIS BRINGS US TO, YOU HAVE ADOPTED, OR THE CITY HAS ADOPTED AN AN AGE FRIENDLY PLAN.
AND WE ARE THRILLED THAT TABITHA AND IS NOW HERE ON THE GROUND.
AND, AND WE'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING WITH TABITHA.
AND, UM, AND SO SHE IS GONNA BE TASKED WITH THE FULFILLMENT OF THIS AGE-FRIENDLY PLAN.
WHAT WE WANNA SHARE IS AMONG OTHER THINGS, BUT WHAT WE WANNA SAY IS THAT NATIONALLY AGE FRIENDLY AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GO TOGETHER.
WHEN YOU ARE AGE FRIENDLY, YOU CAN JUST TAKE ONE STEP, MAYBE TWO STEPS MORE AND BECOME DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
YOUR MOST SUCCESSFUL CITIES IN THIS COUNTRY ARE, ARE LINKING THESE TWO PROGRAMS TOGETHER.
AND SO, YES, OUR CITY SHOULD BE CLEAN AND SAFE AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY SAYS, AND YES, WE NEED ENVIRONMENTS THAT ARE EASY TO N NAVIGATE WITH LANDMARKS FOR WAY FINDING.
SO YOU CAN GO ON DOWN THE FULL LIST OF THE MANY THINGS.
AND THERE ARE MANY WAYS THAT WE CAN JUST TAKE AN ADDITIONAL STEP TO MAKE, UM, OUR CITY ALSO DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
SO I'M ASKING YOU TO HELP ME HELP ALL OF US FRAME THE FUTURE OF DALLAS.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AND TO OUR NEIGHBORS THAT WE ADOPT THE INTEGRATION OF DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AND AGE FRIENDLY.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO ENCOURAGE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY EDUCATION FOR CITY EMPLOYEES, OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO MAKE DECISIONS AND OR IMPACT WITH THE PUBLIC.
WE, UM, WE HOPE THAT YOU CAN ENCOURAGE THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY TO BECOME MORE DEMENTIA AND AGE FRIENDLY.
ADOPTING AGE AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENTAL GUIDELINES.
WE HOPE THAT WE CAN INVEST IN ENGAGEMENT AND SOCIALIZATION OPPORTUNITIES SPECIFIC TO DEMENTIA.
THERE'S A LOT OF ACTIVITIES IN OUR CITY, BUT THEY ARE NOT DEMENTIA SPECIFIC.
AND A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY, UH, RESPITE PROGRAM REQUIRES A SPECIFIC TYPE OF TRAINING FOR THE PERSON THAT'S INTERACTING, LEADING, AND ENGAGING.
AND OF COURSE, WE BELIEVE TOO, IN SAFE, AFFORDABLE CARE AND HOUSING WITH THE ADDITION OF, WE ALSO NEED SAFE AND AFFORDABLE MEMORY CARE.
WE JUST RECEIVED A BOOKLET FROM DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AMERICA WHO IS, WHO IS, UH, WE ARE AFFILIATED WITH, AND THEY ARE PROVIDING US TOOLS TO DEVELOP WHAT OUR GOALS AND IMPACT CAN BE.
SO WE AS AN ORGANIZATION ARE JUST BEGINNING THOSE MEASURES.
IT WILL TAKE, UM, ADDITIONAL DATA FROM OUR CITY PARTNERS TO
[00:25:01]
BE ABLE TO DO THAT.BUT WE BELIEVE THAT WE CAN UTILIZE ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITS THAT ALREADY EXIST, THAT WE CAN DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT MEASURING TOOLS FOR BASELINE DATA, AND THEN ADDITIONAL OUTCOMES AND OUTPUTS.
WE WANNA BE ABLE TO MEASURE, AND THIS IS NOT EASY, BUT MEASURE ATTITUDE, AWARENESS, INCLUSION, EDUCATION, LONELINESS, STRESS, QUALITY OF LIFE AND HEALTH.
AND THEN WE BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD BE MEASURING THE DELIVERY OF COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES.
SO THOSE ARE OUR COMMITMENTS THAT WE FEEL LIKE WORKING WITH, UM, OUR CITY PARTNERS WE WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH.
SO, SO FAR THIS YEAR WE, UH, WE MET WITH TABITHA.
WE, UH, MET IKA AND HER TEAM IKA AND HER TEAM WHO WORK WITH TABITHA HAVE ALREADY DONE DEMENTIA FRIEND SESSIONS.
AND WE HAVE BEEN INVITED TO CITY LIBRARIES TO PRESENT.
WE ARE NOW VERY INVOLVED WITH THE CITY, UM, WITH THE CITY LIBRARY SYSTEM.
THE ADMINISTRATORS HAVE BEEN, UM, ALL HAD OUR DEMENTIA EDUCATION PROGRAM.
AND, UM, WE ARE DOING, LET'S JUST SEE JANE, JANE, YOU WANNA YES.
AND THEN, UH, SO WE'VE GOT A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT WE'VE ALREADY IMPLEMENTED WITH SO MANY MORE TO GO AND WITH YOUR SUPPORT.
AND WE JUST WANT TO BE AT THE TABLE.
WE JUST ASK FOR OUR PLACE AT THE TABLE SO THAT WE CAN SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THEM.
SO ANN, UM, YOU MENTIONED THE LIBRARIES.
WHAT ABOUT PARKS AND REC WOULD LOVE TO BE, WE ARE, WE ARE WORKING ON A CONNECTION WITH PARKS AND REC, RIGHT? YES.
SO RIGHT AFTER THIS MIRACLE SAID, LET'S GET A, LET'S GET SOMETHING ON THE CALENDAR WITH PARKS AND REC.
SO WHY AM I SURPRISED, FRANK? SO, JANE, DO YOU WANNA TALK BEFORE THE VIDEO? I DO.
I WILL JUST SPEND A FEW MINUTES.
I AM A PROUD RETIRED VOLUNTEER IN DALLAS
UH, WHEN I CAME BACK TO DALLAS THE SECOND TIME IN 1987, I JOINED THE STAFF AT PARKLAND.
AT THAT TIME, I HAD A MESSAGE ONE DAY, YOU KNOW, THE OLD PINK SLIPS, AND IT SAID J-E-R-R-Y-A-T-R-I-C-K-S CALL JERRY
I USE THAT TO EMPHASIZE HOW FAR WE'VE COME.
I'M STILL LIKE JUMPING UP AND DOWN ABOUT THE ADVOCACY THIS GROUP DID TO HAVE US HAVE NCA AND TABITHA AND THEIR TEAM HERE TODAY.
I WAS PART OF THE A A RP WORK PLAN FOR AGE FRIENDLY DALLAS, BUT WE ARE NOW MOVING IT FORWARD.
WHY AM I VOLUNTEERING WITH THIS GROUP? FOR A COUPLE REASONS.
NUMBER ONE, I'VE WORKED WITH OLDER ADULTS WITH DEMENTIA SINCE I WAS 22.
I AM NO LONGER 22, BUT I STILL HAVE A PASSION FOR THE WORK.
I ALSO THINK THAT IT IS A GROUP.
WE ARE A GROUP FULLY OF VOLUNTEERS.
WE'RE NOT COMPETING FOR FUNDS THE WAY OTHERS ARE.
SO WE ARE IN A UNIQUE POSITION REALLY TO JUST COME FORWARD AND TRY TO BUILD AND EMPHASIZE PROGRAM.
I LOVE THE CONCEPT OF A FRIEND.
WHEN WE TRAIN ONE INDIVIDUAL, THEY THEN IMPACT OTHERS.
SO WE HAVE SOMEONE IN OUR GROUP WHO CAME TO OUR FIRST, THEN JOINED MIRCA AT THE LIBRARY PROGRAM THAT SHE FIRST SPONSORED, AND WENT OFF TO ONE OF OUR OTHER LIBRARIES IN DALLAS AND STARTED A MEMORY CAFE.
A MEMORY CAFE IS A PLACE TO GO HAVE FUN.
EVERYBODY KNOWS AT SOME POINT YOU MAY NEED ASSISTANCE IN CARING FOR SOMEONE WITH DEMENTIA, BUT YOU KNOW, IN THE EARLY STAGES YOU JUST STILL WANNA HAVE FUN.
YOU WANNA CONTRIBUTE, YOU WANT TO HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO, JUST LIKE YOU AND I ENJOY.
SO SHE STARTED A, EVERY CAFE WE HAVE, ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL HAS WHO HAS BEEN RUNNING THE LONGEST STANDING DAY OUT PROGRAM IN DALLAS.
SO A DAY OUT WORKS A LOT LIKE A DAYCARE OR A MOTHER'S DAY OUT, WHERE TRAINED INDIVIDUALS WILL CARE FOR SOMEONE FOR SEVERAL HOURS WHILE YOU DO WHATEVER.
SO SHE NOW IS TRAINING OTHER FAITH COMMUNITIES AND HAS LED THE WAY BY TRAINING THE STAFF WHERE SHE IS EMPLOYED.
BUT ALSO SHE STARTED TRAINING VOLUNTEERS BECAUSE WHAT WE HEARD FROM PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA IS THEY STILL WANTED TO
[00:30:01]
VOLUNTEER.THEY WANTED TO BE GO ABLE TO GO INTO OUR COMMUNITY AND DO PRODUCTIVE KINDS OF THINGS UNTIL THEY PUT, SO WHY NOW? SO FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, UM, BEING WORKING 45 YEARS WITH OLDER ADULTS, IT'S GREAT TIMING.
WE HAVE A GROWING VOLUME OF OUR HEALTH SYSTEMS IN DALLAS THAT HAVE BEEN NOW APPROVED AS A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY HEALTH SYSTEM.
SO IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THAT CONCEPT, IT FOCUSES ON FOUR THINGS, MOBILITY, UM, MEMORY OR AUGMENTATION MEDICATION, AND WHAT MATTERS.
SO MEMORY IS ALREADY A COMPONENT OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN TERMS OF AGE FRIENDLY.
SO WE HAVE A LOT OF GROWING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING UT AND PARKLAND, GERIATRICS AND OAK, UH, OAK STREET, WHO HAVE ALREADY SOUGHT THIS OUT.
WE HAVE A INCREASED NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE DIAGNOSED AT A YOUNGER AGE.
WE KNOW THAT AS OUR ACCESS IMPROVES AND INFORMATION HAS IMPROVED, PEOPLE ARE BEING DIAGNOSED YOUNGER.
AS YOU ARE BEING DIAGNOSED YOUNGER, YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY, AS ANNE SAID, WORKING, UH, DRIVING, ET CETERA, AND WANTING TO PLAN AHEAD.
SO I WAS THRILLED TO SEE THE AGE FRIENDLY, UH, LEGAL PLANNING THAT THE CITY IS, UH, PROMOTING, ET CETERA.
I ALSO WANNA SHARE, THOUGH, WE HAVE SOME REALLY INTERESTING SMALLER GROUPS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
YOU MAY KNOW THAT PLACES LIKE THE AR ARBORETUM, THE DNA, UH, MEADOWS HAVE RUN SMALL SHORT PROGRAMS FOR PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA IN THEIR CAREGIVER FOR A LONG TIME.
STOMPING GROUND, UH, UH, DALLAS WING SYMPHONY, BUT THEY COME AND GO BECAUSE OF FUNDING AND AVAILABILITY.
I KNOW OUR TIME IS GETTING SHORT.
I COULD GIVE YOU COUNTLESS OTHER EXAMPLES.
BUT THE TWO I WANNA MENTION, DEMENTIA CARE WARRIORS AND MELANIN MINDED ARE NEWER GROUPS IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO ARE REACHING POPULATIONS THAT WE KNOW WE NEED TO REACH, THAT WE ARE NOT REACHING.
WE ARE ALREADY PARTNERING WITH
I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS ALL DAY.
YOU COULD PROBABLY TELL, UM, HOWEVER, I'M GOING TO, UM, ALLOW, AIM TO SHOW, UH, THE VIDEO NOW AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ANY INPUT, SUGGESTIONS, AND ENTERTAINED QUESTIONS.
YOU DEMENTIA STRONGLY AMERICA HAS TO BE THROUGH.
EVERYONE IS TOUCHED BY DEMENTIA OR WHO MAY IN THE FUTURE BE TOUCHED BY DEMENTIA.
SO WHILE THEY'RE WORKING ON THAT, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR OH,
WELL, THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? OH, IF YOU SAW SOMEONE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA, WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS? WOULD YOU BE UNCOMFORTABLE? AVOID THEM.
WOULD YOU BE FRUSTRATED? WOULD YOU DO NOTHING? OR WOULD YOU BE A FRIEND? WOULD YOU ENGAGE THEM AND EMPOWER THEM TO GET THROUGH THEIR DAY? WOULD YOU WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THEM FEEL LIKE A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY? WOULD YOU TAKE EVEN THE SMALLEST STEP TO MAKE THEIR WORLD LESS FRIGHTENING OR CONFUSING? EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US HAVE A
[00:35:01]
UNIQUE PART TO PLAY IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA IN OUR COMMUNITY.BECOME A DEMENTIA FRIEND TODAY, AND BUILD COMMUNITIES WHERE ALL PEOPLE CAN LIVE, AGE, AND THRIVE.
FREDERICKSON IS TWO VERY GO OF THE STORE.
FIND OUT HOMER@DEMENTIAFRIENDSUSA.ORG.
I WANTED TO SHOW THAT VIDEO BECAUSE IT JUST CONNECTS ALL THE DOTS FOR ME.
IT, IT JUST CLOSES THE LOOP AND REALLY GIVES YOU VISUALS OF, OF WHAT DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CAMPAIGN.
SO, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR JANE OR MYSELF? ROB? I, I HAVE UH, A QUESTION JUST IN TERMS OF CLARIFICATION.
SO DEMENTIA FRIENDLY IS RUN COMPLETELY BY VOLUNTEERS, IS THAT CORRECT? SO AND SO THERE IS ESSENTIALLY NO FUNDING.
AND SO YOU ACT MORE AS A FACILITATION FOR DEMENTIA FRIENDLY SERVICES THROUGHOUT ALL THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT YOU WORK WITH.
ANY, ANY EXPENSES THAT ARE, UM, INCURRED? FOR THE MOST PART, JULIET LER COMMUNITIES, UM, SUPPORTS THAT.
SO YOU, YOU DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE THE SERVICES.
YOU HAVE VOLUNTEERS THAT VOLUNTEERS THAT DO THE EDUCATION.
YOU ACT AS ESSENTIALLY A, A FOCAL POINT FOR A LOT OF I GOT IT.
UM, NICOLE, HAVE YOU CHECKED THE ATTENDANCE ON EVERYONE? DO I NEED TO DO A ROLL CALL? OKAY.
UM, PORTIA, YOU'RE BACK IN BUSINESS.
UH, VERMA, I THINK I SAW YOU WALK IN PHYLLIS.
IS IT THE DOCTORS?
MAR MARILYN AND MARIAN ARE HERE.
DEBBIE AUSTIN, ARE YOU ON THE YES.
UM, OUR ILLUSTRIOUS LEADER, UH, J PETER KLEIN IS ILL TODAY.
HE WAS BABYSITTING HIS GRANDCHILD.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS? YOU GET WHATEVER THEY HAD, HE'S GOT IT.
SO, UM, HE WAS UP ALL NIGHT IN THE BATHROOM.
UM, AND THAT'S ALL I'LL HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT.
HE'S PROBABLY ASLEEP AT THIS POINT, ALTHOUGH HE MIGHT JOIN US.
UM, KAREN IS HERE AND MIKE IS HERE.
I MOVE THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE MINUTES FROM THE MONDAY, AUGUST 19TH, 2024 MEETING.
IS THAT GOOD? IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION OR ANY ERRORS THAT ANYONE SAW DURING THAT TIME PERIOD OR WHEN THEY READ IT BEING NONE? I DID SEE A TYPO.
UM, I THINK THE, ON PAGE TWO, ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH, IT SAYS, THE SESSION THAT PETE WENT TO SEE AT THE SENIOR SOURCE WAS CONDUCTED BY THE ADMINISTRATION OF COMMUNITY LIVING.
MAYBE ADMINISTRATION NEEDS TO BE ADMINISTERED, CAPITALIZED.
UM, ANYWAY, BUT THAT WAS PRETTY, UM, THAT WAS IT THAT I SAW.
SO IS THAT THE TITLE OF THE I THINK IT'S THE TITLE OF THE ORGANIZATION.
UM, ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMENTS OTHER THAN THAT? THEN WE'LL HAVE BOTH TO APPROVE THE MINUTES, ALL SAY AYE.
AYE WA IF YOU'RE ON THE OUT THERE.
ANY DISSENTING VOTES? EXCUSE ME.
AND YOU RECOGNIZE THE SECOND JUST THE PORT OF BOARD
I WILL, UH, I'VE APPROVED, I GOT THE SECOND.
AND SO THE MINUTES HAVE BEEN APPROVED? YES.
UM, SO WE, UH, I'M SUPPOSED TO REMIND YOU ABOUT THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT.
IT IS OPEN, WE DO HAVE PEOPLE ON VIDEO.
IF YOU ARE, UH, UH, COMMISSIONER, YOU SHOULD BE VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES, UM, SO THAT YOU'RE NOT MISSING THIS SESSION.
UM, SO UPDATE ON THE LISTENING SESSIONS, THE SENIOR LISTENING SESSIONS.
UM, WE HAD A FABULOUS SESSION THIS LAST WEEK.
VERNA, UM, DID A, JUST A GREAT JOB, VERNON.
UH, I'M SURE YOU SPENT A LOT MORE TIME ON IT THAN I SPENT ON MINE.
[00:40:01]
'CAUSE I THINK PETE AND I, I WASN'T THERE.AND, UM, WHO ELSE? I WAS SEVERAL.
A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE.
AND, UH, OUR NEWEST MEMBER, I THINK THEY PUT NAME ON, UH, TERRA TARACITA WAS THERE AS WELL AND BROUGHT A GUEST WITH HER.
BUT, UH, WE HAD, HAD, UH, OUR GOAL WAS TO HAVE A 100 PARTICIPANTS THERE, AND WE PUT OUT 104 TABLES, I, I'M SORRY, 104 CHAIRS, AND ENDED UP HAVING TO PUT OUT MORE.
AND, UH, WE DID GO THROUGH THE DATA.
UH, WE HAD, UH, THE CONSTITUENTS THAT WERE THERE DISCUSS THREE PRIORITIES FOR THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT NEEDED IMPROVEMENT THE MOST.
AND, UM, THEN THEY, YOU KNOW, KIND OF TALK OUT WITHOUT EACH GROUP TO DO THAT.
UH, I HAD A COUPLE OF CALLS AFTER, UH, THE SESSION.
UH, WE HAD TWO, TWO, UH, TEENAGE BOYS THAT WERE KILLED.
WE TIME, UH, IN THE OAK CLIFF AREA AND ACROSS TO DISTRICT THREE.
AND SO A SUGGESTION HAS MADE, BEEN MADE THAT, REGARDING SAFETY SINCE SO MANY OF US WALK DURING THE DAY AND, UM, ARE FEARFUL OF DOING THAT NOW.
IN, IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE, OF THE, OF THE DISTRICT THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO A, UM, GUN BUYBACK.
THAT'S GONNA BE OUR FIRST ACTIVITY TO, UH, DO THAT GUN, UH, BUYBACK AND TO LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW THAT WE AREN'T JUST TALKING, BUT WE'RE GONNA FOLLOW THROUGH AND DO SOME THINGS.
ANOTHER THING AROUND SAFETY, THEY WERE SAYING THAT THERE WERE SOME AREAS THAT NEED TO BE SENIOR ZONES.
AND SO WE'RE GOING GO AGAIN WITH THE CITY TO SEE WHAT THEY WILL ACTUALLY ALLOW US TO POST THE SIGNS, AREAS WHERE A LOT OF US WALK AND DO OTHER THINGS.
THAT IT'S, YOU KNOW, IT'S A SENIOR ZONE.
AND, UH, WE HAD LUNCH AFTERWARDS AND MANY OF THE REMAIN AFTERWARDS, UH, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE FINISHED, WE HAD A SENIOR BAND, UH, THAT WAS THERE TO PROVIDE MUSIC THROUGHOUT THE, THE MORNING.
AND, UM, GETTING PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IS REALLY WHAT WE NEED.
IS TO GET SENIORS INVOLVED IN WHAT WE'RE DOING, UH, TO BE A STRONGER VOICE.
AND BASICALLY WHAT I SHARED WITH THEM WAS THAT IF YOU BROUGHT UP A CONCERN, I EXPECT TO SEE YOUR NAME ON A COMMITTEE SIGN UP SHEET.
WERE THESE BREAKOUT SESSIONS, SO IT WAS ORGANIZED INTO BREAKOUT SESSIONS? WERE NO, NO.
THAT I THINK THAT WOULD'VE TAKEN TOO LONG.
WE HAD, UH, THEY WERE, TABLES OF 10, EXCUSE ME, CAME IN, UH, THEY SAT AT THE TABLE THAT THEY CHOSE.
AND SO YOU REALLY HAD PEOPLE ACROSS NEIGHBORHOODS.
AND IN WALKING AS I WALKED BY, THEY WERE DISCUSSING, UH, REALLY, UH, THE, SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT THEY WERE, THAT THEY HAD WERE THE SAME.
SO THEY GOT A TABLE THEN PRESENTED.
BUT THAT'S WHAT I MEAN, THAT'S WHAT THEY CAME PER TABLE, THE TABLE WOULD TALK, HEARD THE TABLE.
IT WAS A 10 MINUTE DISCUSSION.
A WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST 10 ISSUES? AND THEN THOSE WERE DISCUSSED WITH THE BROADER LEVEL.
CAN I ASK, WHAT WERE THE TOP THREE CONCERNS THAT YOU WOULD SAY THE TOP THREE? WELL, WE REALLY HAD FIVE, UH, SAFETY, SAFETY IN SEVERAL AREAS REGARDING TRANSPORTATION.
UH, THE GUN SAFETY AS WELL AS DOGS, LOOSE DOGS.
ONE WAS, UH, I SAID TRANSPORTATION.
UH, THERE WAS CONCERN ABOUT SCHOOL BUSES BLOCKING ENTRANCES OF DIFFERENT APARTMENT COMPLEXES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
[00:45:01]
WITH SENIORS RENT AND, OR, WELL, I GUESS IT'S RENT GOING UP SO QUICKLY AND SO MUCH.UM, AND THE LACK OF SENIOR HOUSING AVAILABILITY IN OUR DISTRICT.
OH, WHAT'S ANOTHER ONE? I SHOULD'VE BROUGHT THOSE.
SO THE COURT WILL BE PREPARED, I'M SURE.
BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE DO THAT LIKE SHE'S DONE WITH THE OTHERS.
UM, BUT IN THE, IN THE, FOR TIME PURPOSES.
MARYANNE, DID YOU, DID WE, DID YOU HAVE YOURS BEFORE OUR LAST MEETING OR SINCE THEN? IT WAS, IT WAS BEFORE.
AND COMING UP, KAREN, YOU'RE NEXT WEEK OR THIS WEEK? NO, NEXT WEEK.
AND THEN THERE'S GONNA BE A COMBINED ONE PORSCHE.
IT'S TWO DISTRICTS, RIGHT? IT'S THREE.
WELL, ACTUALLY IT'S THREE AND PLUS THE LGBT COMMUNITY.
AND SO WHAT DISTRICTS IS, WILL THAT BE IT'S 2 8, 9 9
AND WHEN IS THAT ONE GONNA BE? IT'S THE 27TH.
NO, IT'S OCTOBER 12TH, ISN'T IT? OCTOBER 12TH.
OH, I'M GOING TO SOMETHING ON THE 10TH.
SOMEBODY'S, UH, WE'RE GONNA DO IT IN THE MORNING.
UH, NINE TO 12 ON NINE UNTIL, IS THERE FLYERS BACK THERE FOR THE REST OF THEM? GREAT.
SO YOU GUYS PICK UP YOUR FLYERS SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT, IF YOU CAN.
THEY HAVE BEEN VERY, UH, INFORMATIVE AND, UH, DEFINITELY WORTHWHILE GOING TO.
UM, SO, UM, ANYTHING ELSE, QUESTIONS ON SENIOR LISTENING THAT WANTS TO GET OUT OF THE, THIS POINT? WELL, I, I'M JUST GONNA SAY, YOU KNOW, DISTRICT 14 IS NEXT WEEK AT EXCEL, CLARK AND I DO HAVE FLYERS AND PAUL REALLY LOOKS A LOT BETTER THAN ME, BUT, OKAY.
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, WE'D LIKE TO GO ONTO NEW BUSINESS AND, UH, WE HAVE TWO FINE WOMEN HERE, ANN MCKINLEY AND JANE HUNTLEY.
THEY ARE, UH, REPRESENTING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY INITIATIVE FAR DALLAS.
AND BE CAREFUL, BECAUSE I THINK JANE KNOWS KAREN.
SO YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME RELATIONSHIPS THERE.
SO WE, THE, THE TV CAMERAS CAN SEE YOU, SO IF YOU WOULD PRESENT FROM THAT PODIUM, SO YEAH, BUT I'M IN THE WAY PODIUM.
OH, YOU CAN COME SIT HERE NEXT TO ME.
WOULD THAT WORK?
YOU CAN HEAR ME BACK INTO YOU.
DAVID, CAN YOU HEAR ME DOWN RIGHT, AL.
AND SO THEREFORE, WITH THAT, ALL OF US SHOULD HAVE AN INPUT AND A CONCERN FOR HOW WE PLAN TO HANDLE THIS NEED IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
I DO WANNA SPECIFICALLY POINT OUT THE FACT THAT THIS IS NOT JUST AN OLD DISEASE, AND IT DOESN'T JUST IN FACT IMPACT OLDER PEOPLE.
[00:50:01]
THEY WERE NOT POSITIVE.AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE TODAY, BECAUSE WE WANT TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE VIEW DEMENTIA AND THE WAY WE VIEW PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S.
DEMENTIA IMPACTS MEMORY COMMUNICATION, WHICH IS A BASIC HUMAN NEED.
AND THEN THE NEXT ONE, IT IMPACTS THE ABILITY TO THINK AND PROBLEM SOLVE.
THE ABILITY TO SEQUENCE AND COMPLETE EVERYDAY TASK EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS, DECISION MAKING, VISION, HEARING, AS YOU SAID, IT CONTROLS, IT'S THE BRAIN AND THE BRAIN CONTROLS OUR ENTIRE BEING.
AND THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT DISEASES, WHICH ARE, ARE THAT CREATED DEMENTIA, RIGHT? SO THIS IS A GROUP OF SYMPTOMS. AND FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS PRESENTATION, I'M GOING TO USE THE WORD DEMENTIA, AND I'LL BE USING THESE WORDS INTERCHANGEABLY.
ALZHEIMER'S IS THE MOST PREVALENT WITH ABOUT 60 TO 80% OF YOUR DIAGNOSES TODAY ARE ALZHEIMER'S.
OTHER WORDS THAT YOU MIGHT HEAR ARE VASCULAR DEMENTIA, LEWY BODY DEMENTIA, FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA.
UM, AND THEN THERE'S EVEN A PARKINSON'S DEMENTIA.
THEY'RE TRYING TO REPORT A UTILITY OUTAGE, RIDE THE BUS, NAVIGATE THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM, AND THEY ARE OFTEN AFRAID TO SCAMMERS.
THIS NEED IS GROWING AND OUR CITY NEEDS TO BE PREPARED FOR GREATER NUMBER OF RESIDENTS WITH THESE DISEASES.
AND MAY I SAY, IN OUR, IN OUR PERSPECTIVE, WE ARE ALWAYS WORKING TOWARDS, THERE'S NOT A CHECKLIST AND A CHECKBOX.
WE'RE GONNA SAY WE'RE DONE BECAUSE WE'RE NOT DONE.
THESE SECTORS REPRESENT HEALTHCARE, THE FULL CARE THROUGH THE CONTINUUM, BUSINESSES, FAITH COMMUNITIES, LEGAL AND FINANCIAL PLANNING, EMERGENCY PLANNING AND FIRST RESPONDERS, TRANSPORTATION, PUBLIC SPACES AND NEIGHBORS EVERY DAY, RESIDENTS AND NEIGHBORS.
AND A NEW, A NEW SECTOR THAT'S NOT REPRESENTED
[00:55:01]
IN OUR GRAPHIC IS AIRPORTS.AGAIN, THIS CALLS FOR A COMMUNITY-WIDE RESPONSE, WHICH INCLUDES OUR CITY ENDORSEMENT AND SUPPORT.
AND BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MANY DIFFERENT EXPERTS THAT WORKED WITH US, WE MADE A NATIONAL APPLICATION TO BEGIN THE WORK OF BECOMING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
WE WANTED TO VERY MUCH MAKE OURSELVES, UM, AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE THAT ARE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA, FIND WAYS AND FIND THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED.
OUR WEBSITE FOCUSES ON THINGS THAT WILL REDUCE STIGMA AND ISOLATION.
OF COURSE, AS I SAID, WE STARTED IN 2018 AND WE ALL EXPERIENCED COVID.
AND THE COVID IMPACT, UH, IMPACTED US AS WELL.
DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY DALLAS HAD TO PAUSE OUR FOCUS ON BECAUSE WE WERE ALL CARING FOR OLDER ADULTS.
AND OUR NUMBERS ARE NOT GROW, ARE NOT SHRINKING.
AND THEN DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ENGAGE IS WHERE WE ARE SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT, UM, OF RESPITE PROGRAMS, UH, MEMORY CAFES AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR CAREGIVERS.
SO THIS BRINGS US TO, YOU HAVE ADOPTED, OR THE CITY HAS ADOPTED AN AN AGE-FRIENDLY PLAN.
AND WE ARE THRILLED THAT TABITHA AND IS NOW HERE ON THE GROUND AND WOOHOO.
AND WE'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING WITH TABITHA.
AND, UM, AND SO SHE IS GONNA BE TASKED WITH THE FULFILLMENT OF THIS AGE-FRIENDLY PLAN.
WHAT WE WANNA SHARE IS AMONG OTHER THINGS, BUT WHAT WE WANNA SAY IS THAT NATIONALLY AGE-FRIENDLY AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GO TOGETHER.
WHEN YOU ARE AGE FRIENDLY, YOU CAN JUST TAKE ONE STEP, MAYBE TWO STEPS MORE AND BECOME DEMENTIA FRIENDLY.
YOUR MOST SUCCESSFUL CITIES IN THIS COUNTRY ARE, ARE LINKING THESE TWO PROGRAMS TOGETHER.
AND SO, YES, OUR CITIES SHOULD BE CLEAN AND SAFE AND DEMENTIA FRIENDLY SAYS, AND YES, WE NEED ENVIRONMENTS THAT ARE EASY TO N NAVIGATE WITH LANDMARKS FOR WAY FINDING.
[01:00:01]
IT'S IMPORTANT TO DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AND TO OUR NEIGHBORS THAT WE ADOPT THE INTEGRATION OF DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AND AGE FRIENDLY.IT'S IMPORTANT TO ENCOURAGE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY EDUCATION FOR CITY EMPLOYEES, OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO MAKE DECISIONS AND OR IMPACT WITH THE PUBLIC.
WE JUST RECEIVED A BOOKLET FROM DEMENTIA FRIENDLY AMERICA WHO IS, WHO IS, UH, WE ARE AFFILIATED WITH AND THEY ARE PROVIDING US TOOLS TO DEVELOP WHAT OUR GOALS AND IMPACT CAN BE.
SO WE AS AN ORGANIZATION ARE JUST BEGINNING THOSE MEASURES.
IT WILL TAKE, UM, ADDITIONAL DATA FROM OUR CITY PARTNERS TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT.
BUT WE BELIEVE THAT WE CAN UTILIZE ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITS THAT ALREADY EXIST, THAT WE CAN DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT MEASURING TOOLS FOR BASELINE DATA AND THEN ADDITIONAL OUTCOMES AND OUTPUTS.
SO, SO FAR THIS YEAR WE UH, WE MET WITH TABITHA.
WE, UH, MET MIKA AND HER TEAM MIKA AND HER TEAM WHO WORK WITH TABITHA HAVE ALREADY DONE DEMENTIA FRIEND SESSIONS.
AND UM, WE ARE DOING, LET'S JUST SEE JANE, JANE, YOU WANT? YES.
WHAT ABOUT PARKS AND REC WOULD LOVE TO BE WE ARE, WE ARE WORKING ON A CONNECTION WITH PARKS AND REC.
SO RIGHT AFTER THIS MIRACLE SAID, LET'S GET A, LET'S GET SOMETHING ON THE CALENDAR WITH PARKS AND REC.
SO WHY AM I SURPRISED? RIGHT? SO, JANE, DO YOU WANNA TALK BEFORE THE VIDEO? I DO.
I WILL JUST SPEND A FEW MINUTES.
I AM A PROUD RETIRED VOLUNTEER IN DALLAS
UH, WHEN I CAME BACK TO DALLAS THE SECOND TIME IN 1987, I JOINED THE STAFF AT PARKLAND.
AT THAT TIME, I HAD A PARKLAND MESSAGE ONE DAY, YOU KNOW, THE OLD PINK SLIPS AND IT SAID J-E-R-R-Y-A-T-R-I-C-K-S CALLED GERIATRICS
AND I RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER, I RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER.
I USE THAT TO EMPHASIZE HOW FAR WE'VE COME.
I'M STILL LIKE JUMPING UP AND DOWN ABOUT THE ADVOCACY THIS GROUP DID TO HAVE US HAVE NCA AND TABITHA AND THEIR TEAM HERE TODAY.
I WAS PART OF THE A A RP WORK PLAN FOR AGE FRIENDLY DALLAS.
BUT WE ARE NOW MOVING IT FORWARD.
[01:05:01]
ARE IN A UNIQUE POSITION REALLY TO JUST COME FORWARD AND TRY TO BUILD AN EMPHASIZE PROGRAM.I LOVE THE CONCEPT OF A FRIEND.
WHEN WE TRAIN ONE INDIVIDUAL, THEY THEN IMPACT OTHERS.
SO WE HAVE SOMEONE IN OUR GROUP WHO CAME TO OUR FIRST TRAINING, THEN JOINED MIRCA AT THE LIBRARY PROGRAM THAT SHE FIRST SPONSORED, AND WENT OFF TO ONE OF OUR OTHER LIBRARIES IN DALLAS AND STARTED A MEMORY CAFE.
SO A DAY OUT WORKS A LOT LIKE A DAYCARE OR A MOTHER'S DAY OUT WHERE TRAINED INDIVIDUALS WILL CARE FOR SOMEONE FOR SEVERAL HOURS WHILE YOU DO WHATEVER.
SO SHE NOW IS TRAINING OTHER FAITH COMMUNITIES AND HAS LED THE WAY BY TRAINING THE STAFF WHERE SHE IS EMPLOYED.
BUT ALSO SHE STARTED TRAINING VOLUNTEERS BECAUSE WHAT WE HEARD FROM PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA IS THEY STILL WANTED TO VOLUNTEER.
THEY WANTED TO BE GO ABLE TO GO INTO OUR COMMUNITY AND DO PRODUCTIVE KINDS OF THINGS UNTIL THEY PUT, SO WHY NOW? SO FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, UM, BEING WORKING 45 YEARS WITH OLDER ADULTS, IT'S GREAT TIMING.
WE HAVE A GROWING VOLUME OF OUR HEALTH SYSTEMS IN DALLAS THAT HAVE BEEN NOW APPROVED AS A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY HEALTH SYSTEM.
SO IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THAT CONCEPT, IT FOCUSES ON FOUR THINGS, MOBILITY, UM, MEMORY AUGMENTATION, MEDICATION, AND WHAT MATTERS.
AS YOU ARE BEING DIAGNOSED YOUNGER, YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY, AS ANN SAID, WORKING, UH, DRIVING, ET CETERA AND WANTING TO PLAN AHEAD.
STOMPING GROUND, UH, UH, DALLAS WIND SYMPHONY, BUT THEY COME AND GO BECAUSE OF FUNDING AND AVAILABILITY.
I KNOW OUR TIME IS GETTING SHORT.
I COULD GIVE YOU COUNTLESS OTHER EXAMPLES, BUT THE TWO I WANNA MENTION, DEMENTIA CARE WARRIORS AND MELANIN MINDED ARE NEWER GROUPS IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO ARE REACHING POPULATIONS THAT WE KNOW WE NEED TO REACH, THAT WE ARE NOT REACHING.
SO WE WANT TO PARTNER, WE ARE ALREADY PARTNERING WITH MIRKA AND HER GROUP WITH TABITHA, BUT TO PROMOTE WHAT WE BELIEVE WILL HELP US IN THIS ARENA.
I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS ALL DAY.
YOU COULD PROBABLY TELL, UM, HOWEVER, I'M GOING TO, UM, ALLOW, AIM TO SHOW, UH, THE VIDEO NOW AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ANY INPUT, SUGGESTIONS, AND ENTERTAIN QUESTIONS.
AND THAT STRONGLY, AMERICA HAS TO BE FOR EVERYONE IS TOUCHED BY DEMENTIA OR WHO MAY IN A FUTURE BE TOUCHED BY DEMENTIA? ANY COMMUNITY THAT MAKES IT APOLOGIES.
[01:10:02]
SO WHILE THEY'RE WORKING ON THAT, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR, OH, THERE SOUNDS GOOD.WELL, THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO,
IT'S, IF YOU SAW SOMEONE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA, WOULD YOU RECOGNIZE THE SCIENCE?
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US HAVE A UNIQUE PART TO PLAY IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA IN OUR COMMUNITY TO COME THE DEMENTIA FRIEND TODAY AND BUILD COMMUNITIES WHERE ALL PEOPLE CAN LIVE, AGE, AND THRIVE.
FREDRICKSON IS TWO THERE IN THE STORE.
YOU FIND OUT HOMEWORK@DEMENTIAFRIENDSUSA.ORG.
I WANTED TO SHOW THAT VIDEO BECAUSE IT JUST CONNECTS ALL THE DOTS FOR ME.
IT, IT JUST CLOSES THE LOOP AND REALLY GIVES YOU VISUALS OF WHAT DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CAN BE.
SO, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR JANE OR MYSELF? I, I HAVE, UH, A QUESTION JUST IN TERMS OF CLARIFICATION.
SO DEMENTIA FRIENDLY IS RUN COMPLETELY BY VOLUNTEERS.
IS THAT CORRECT? AND SO THERE IS ESSENTIALLY NO FUNDING.
AND SO YOU ACT MORE AS A FACILITATION FOR DEMENTIA FRIENDLY SERVICES THROUGHOUT ALL THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT YOU WORK WITH.
ANY, ANY EXPENSES THAT ARE, UM, INCURRED? FOR THE MOST PART, JULIET KELLER COMMUNITIES, UM, SUPPORTS THAT.
SO YOU, YOU DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE THE SERVICES.
YOU HAVE VOLUNTEERS THAT VOLUNTEERS THAT DO THE EDUCATION.
SO YOU ACT AS ESSENTIALLY A, A FOCAL POINT FOR A LOT OF OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND ENCOURAGING THOSE ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY SERVICES.
SO WE'RE WORKING WITH THE SENIOR SOURCE NOW.
THEY'RE AN ORGANIZATION THAT HAS DECIDED TO BECOME A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY WORKPLACE.
AND WE'RE GONNA BE WORKING WITH THEM WHEN WE ALREADY PARTNERED WITH THEM ON AN EDUCATION COMPONENT.
SO YES, SOME OF IT IS PLANTING A SEED.
WHEN WE SPEAK TO PEOPLE, IT JUST, IT'S AMAZING TO ME THE IDEAS THEY HAVE THAT I WOULD NEVER HAVE GERMINATED ON ONLINE.
SO IN SOME CITIES, THERE ARE MOVIE THEATERS THAT OFFER AN EVERY THURSDAY AT 11 O'CLOCK LIGHTS ON MOVIE.
THEY DON'T CARE IF SOMEBODY COMES AND YELLS OR WALKS OR IN FORT WORTH.
THEY'RE OUR AGE FRIENDLY FACE SERVICES THAT DO THE SAME THING, DIFFERENT TIME.
BUT I COULD TAKE MY LOVED ONE AND NOT BE CONCERNED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BEHAVE IN THE WAY THAT'S TYPICAL OF A CONVERSATION.
YOU KNOW, A CONGREGATION, SOME RESTAURANTS PURPLE TABLECLOTH.
SO YOU KNOW THAT THE STAFF ARE TRAINED TO ASSIST SOMEBODY AND TO UNDERSTAND IF THEY MISS, UM, SOME OF THE CUES.
WE'RE REALLY FORTUNATE THAT JULIA POWER HAS SUPPORTED THAT PIECE BECAUSE WE DO HAVE BROCHURES YOU CAN GO TRY TO FILL OUT AND PLANT THE CITY WITH CENTRAL AMERICA.
UM, THEY, WHEN I SAID THEIR CHECKLIST, IT'S BECAUSE THEY RECOGNIZE THAT EVERY CITY, EVERY COMMUNITY, EVERY ORGANIZATION.
SO IT'S REALLY UP TO US TO EVALUATE WHAT OUR NEEDS ARE AND WHERE AND WHERE WE CAN BEST.
UM, HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED WITH VOLUNTEERING? PEOPLE JUST CAUGHT.
WE WOULD WE WELCOME YOUR VOLUNTEERING.
USUALLY ONE OF THE FIRST STEPS IS TO DO A DEMENTIA FRIEND SESSION.
AND THEN A SECOND SESSION WOULD BE FOR SOMEONE TO SAY, I'D
[01:15:01]
LIKE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AND INFLUENCE IN MY AREA.I CAN'T BE IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD NOR CAN JANE.
AND SO WE ARE JUST TRICKLING OUT THROUGH THAT WAY.
WE GIVE THAT PERSON THE MATERIALS AND WHAT THAT MEANS TO BE A CHAMPION.
AND THEY GO OUT AND THEY START DOING 'EM TOO.
ALL NUMBERS ARE REPORTED BACK TO JANE, WHO THEN REPORTS TO THE STATE LEVEL WHO REPORTS TO THE NATIONAL LEVEL.
AND DO YOU KNOW OFFHAND WHEN YOUR NEXT SESSION IS? WELL, WE CAN, WE CAN BRING A SESSION DIRECTLY TO A GROUP.
IF YOU SAY, I'D LIKE TO HOLD A SESSION AND GET FIVE OR 10 PEOPLE WITH ME, WE ALSO DO THEM VIRTUALLY ON THE SECOND TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH.
AND JANE FACILITATES THOSE FROM 12 NOON TO 1:00 PM I'VE DONE VOLUNTEER GROUPS, I'VE DONE FAMILIES.
UM, WE JUST GO TO WHERE WE ARE INVITED TO BE, AND THEN WE ALSO JUST HOLD THEM AT FOWLER OR OTHER LOCATIONS.
SO, SO YOU NOTICE, I NOTICED THAT FAITH-BASED COMMUNITIES WAS ON, UM, AND I'M A MEMBER OF PENNSYLVANIA.
UM, AND DO, YEAH, THEY HAVE A I DON'T, I HAVEN'T SEEN IT ON THE SCHEDULE YET THIS YEAR.
SO AS YOU SAY, SOMETIMES THE PROGRAMS COME AND GO.
UM, BUT DO YOU HAVE A, LIKE A WHOLE GROUP THAT ENGAGES JUST WITH THE FAITH-BASED COMMUNITIES OR, BECAUSE THAT'S AN EASY COMMUNITY TO ACCESS.
SO WE, UH, DID HAVE A SECTOR LEADER FOR THAT AREA AND WE, UM, NEED ANOTHER SECTOR LEADER, UM, TO TAKE ON THAT RESPONSIBILITY.
BUT REALLY THE, THE COMMUNITIES ARE CONTACTING US.
WE'VE GOT ANOTHER QUESTION REMOTELY.
UH, DEBBIE, WE CAN'T HEAR YOU.
I MET YOU AT THE DAG SUMMIT LAST FALL AT THE JULIET FOWLER VENDOR BOOTH.
AND YOU CAME TO OUR MELANIN MINDED MEETING, THE FIRST ONE THAT WE HAD EARLIER THIS YEAR.
I TEXT HIM WHILE I WAS, WHILE YOU ALL WERE PRESENTING TO LET HIM KNOW THAT YOU ALL MENTIONED HIS ORGANIZATION.
SO I WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT WE REALLY APPRECIATE BEING MENTIONED BECAUSE HE IS A, A VERY DEDICATED COMMUNITY PARTNER.
UH, AND TO ADD A LITTLE PROMO AFTER THE ALZHEIMER'S WALK LATER THIS YEAR, THAT EVENING, HE WILL HAVE HIS GALA, THE ANNUAL GALA.
AND SO IT, IT'S, IT'S DATED TO COINCIDE WITH THE ALZHEIMER'S WALK SO WE CAN DRAW MORE ATTENTION TO HIS ORGANIZATION.
BUT IT IS A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ORGANIZATION AND IT OFFERS SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT, PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF DEMENTIA THAT DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO CERTAIN PLACES BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF THEM OR DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM.
HE HAS TRAINED PEOPLE IN HIS ORGANIZATION THAT WILL DO TRANSPORTATION, UM, UH, RIDE, NOT RIDE SHARE, BUT UH, HELP PEOPLE TO GET GROCERIES, GO TO THE DOCTOR AND THINGS LIKE THAT WHEN FAMILY MEMBERS CAN'T DO THAT.
AND SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU MENTIONING US.
AND I WANNA MAKE ONE MORE COMMENT.
IN MY CENTER IN WEST DALLAS, WHAT THE PURPOSE CENTER, WE HAVE A THING GOING ON FOR SENIORS TO, UH, FUNCTION.
SO THEY GAVE 'EM ALL COMPUTERS.
SO ON A WEDNESDAY, I, I LEFT MY PAPERWORK ON A WEDNESDAY.
ALL SENIORS GO IN THERE, LEARN HOW TO DO THEY, BECAUSE A LOT OF 'EM IS REAL OLD AND THEY DON'T REMEMBER.
SO THEY TEACHING THEM HOW TO USE THE COMPUTER, HOW TO PUT THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS ON IT, HOW TO KNOW MEDICINE THEY TAKING.
'CAUSE SOME OF 'EM DON'T KNOW.
SO AFTER SIX WEEKS THEY GIVE THEM THE COMPUTER, THE LAPTOP, YOU KNOW.
SO ALL THIS IN THERE ARE SENIORS I GO IN ON THE NEXT BATCH, BUT UH, THEY DOING THAT AND I CALL IT FRIENDLY.
AND THEY GET THEM COMPUTERS AND THEY, THEM LADIES DON'T REMEMBER NOTHING.
BUT THEN THEY GET IN THAT COMPUTER ROOM AND THEY TEACHING THEM, THEY KNOW HOW TO BRING UP EVERYTHING.
THEY JUST WAY, SO I SAID, NOW I NEED TO GET IN THAT CLASS.
SO I BELIEVE IT CAME FROM Y'ALL A FRIENDLY TO COME TO THAT ORGANIZATION AND, AND DO A DEMENTIA FRIEND SESSION.
I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU COME THERE.
UM, YOU KNOW WHAT, I THINK RNA KNOWS HOW TO GET US AND SIR, DID YOU HAVE, I JUST HAVE ONE LAST QUESTION ON, YOU MENTIONED EARLIER THAT CERTAIN CITIES, OR THERE'S A LOT OF CITIES THAT HAVE THE DEMENTIA FRIENDLY INITIATIVE AND MESHING THOSE.
IS THERE ONE OR TWO CITIES THAT HAVE BEEN REALLY EFFECTIVE AT DOING THAT? WELL, I KNOW THEY LIFT UP BOSTON ALL THE TIME.
BOSTON MUST KNOW STATE THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM.
[01:20:01]
I WANT TO JUST FINISH BY KIND OF A DIFFERENT PATH, BUT ANOTHER VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY I DO.I LOOK AT THESE AS A FOOT IN THE DOOR BECAUSE ONE OF THE HUGE CHANGES OVER MY 40 YEARS IN GERIATRICS OR 45 IS THAT WE NOW HAVE EVIDENCE-BASED, UH, WELL-DOCUMENTED APPROACHES THAT YOU AND I CAN USE TODAY OR AT A 25-YEAR-OLD CAN DO TO REDUCE RISK OF NEUROCOGNITIVE DECLINE.
AND THAT REALLY BROUGHT YOUNG PEOPLE.
AND WHEN I SAY TO YOUNGER PEOPLE IN ANOTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY I GIVE, THERE ARE EVIDENCE-BASED WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK.
I THINK THAT IT'S ALL PART AND PARCEL THE SAME.
WE THANK FOR YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND FOR HER LEADERSHIP AND THE CITY GO GETTER.
SO NICK, CAN YOU MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE THEIR TELEPHONE NUMBERS? 'CAUSE I KNOW THEY WEREN'T ON THE PRESENTATION.
UM, SO MOVING ON, IF WE CAN, UH, PETE SENT OUT.
I CAN'T HEAR YOU CAN'T HEAR ANYONE.
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? HELLO? YES.
DEBBIE, CAN YOU HEAR? ALL RIGHT, GOOD.
SO EVERYONE SHOULD I DIDN'T, I DIDN'T FIND THE SCHEDULE ON MY, UM, SO IS THERE A WAY MACAU'S PUTTING THE SCHEDULE, MACAL, DO YOU HAVE COPIES OF THE IT WAS LIKE THE FOURTH ATTACHMENT I THINK.
THE ONE RIGHT BEFORE THE, RIGHT BEFORE DEMENTIA? YEAH.
YEAH, I WAS GONNA SAY SHE CAN USE MINE, RIGHT? YEAH.
UM, THAT'S WHY I WAS JUST ASKING DAVID, IT NOT MY BIRTHDAY.
SO I COULDN'T FIND, I WOULD LIKE TO, UH, GET A MOTION TO APPROVE THIS CALENDAR FOR 2025.
I'LL MAKE THE MOTION TO APPROVE.
IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION ON ANY OF THE DATES PRESENTED ON THE CALENDAR IN THAT CASE? WE HAVE A CALENDAR FOR 2025 IF WE CAN VOTE ON IT.
SO EVERYONE IN FAVOR OF IT SAY AYE OR RAISE YOUR HAND A AYE AYE.
UH, ARE THERE ANY NAYS? SO WE HAVE IN YOUR CALENDAR, I WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE HALF OF THEM, BUT THAT'S OKAY.
SO, UM, PORSCHE, YOU WANNA START ON YOUR END OF START WHAT VOTING THAT? YES.
YOU AGREE WITH THE DATES? YES, I AGREE WITH THE DATES.
I AGREE WITH THE 2025, THE MEETINGS.
UH,
KELLY, ARE YOU GOOD, LISA? LISA? AGREE.
UH, DEBBIE, AUSTIN, ARE YOU OKAY? I AGREE.
[01:25:01]
MARCO, IS THAT OKAY? THANK YOU VERY MUCH.UM, THE SECOND ITEM THAT PETE WANTED TO TALK ABOUT TODAY WAS TOPIC IDEAS FOR FUTURE SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION MEETINGS.
UM, SINCE THIS IS KIND OF JUST BEING BROUGHT UP, I DON'T KNOW IF ANYONE'S GOT ANY IDEAS, BUT IF THEY DO, UH, I'LL TAKE THEM AND WE CAN TALK ABOUT IT.
SO, SO THE QUESTION WHICH SURROUNDS THAT, UM, ARE WE MANDATED THAT WE MEET EVERY MONTH? YES.
IT'S, SO I'M TRYING TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
SO YES, WHO SAYS YES, IT'S PART OF WHAT'S OUTLINED FOR BOARDS AND COMMISSION, 15 MEMBER BOARD COMMISSIONS.
IT'S OUTLINED IN OUR, SO, SO I'VE UNDERSTOOD FROM SOME OF THE COMMISSIONS THAT THEY DON'T DO THAT.
SO THAT'S WHY I'M ASKING THE QUESTION.
I CAN'T ANSWER FOR OTHER IONS.
SO IT'S MANDATED THAT, THAT, THAT IT MUST BE MET MONTH MUST MEET MONTHLY.
IT'S ARTICULATED THAT THAT'S EXPECTATION IN THE CODE.
I'LL LOOK IT UP REAL QUICK WHILE WE'RE THANK YOU.
BECAUSE I WAS SITTING AT A LARGER MEETING AND THEY SAID, WE DON'T MEET EVERY MONTH.
SO WHAT NOW? AT, AT A, A COMMISSIONER'S FROM MY DISTRICT, DISTRICT 11.
AND WE WERE SITTING THERE AND OUR COUNCIL PERSON BRINGS ALL OF THE PEOPLE TOGETHER THAT SIT ON COMMISSIONS.
UM, AND I'M TRYING TO REMEMBER WHICH ONE IT WAS THAT SAID, WE DON'T MEET MONTHLY.
AND SO I THOUGHT, HMM, I WONDER WHY WE DO OR ARE WE SUPPOSED TO, OR, SO IT'S JUST A QUESTION.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARDS MAY NOT LIKE, BUT THIS IS AN ADVISORY BOARD.
SO THERE, THERE'S LANGUAGE AND CITY CODE THAT JUST, IT'S CHAPTER EIGHT IS ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.
AND THAT WE'RE, THAT'S WHERE IT KIND OF OUTLINES THOSE EXPECTATIONS.
CAN YOU DO A QUICK, YOU CLARIFY THAT FOR US? OH, LUCY.
LUCY FROM CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE WAS ACTUALLY ONLINE.
SHE COULD, CAN YOU, ARE YOU ABLE TO SPEAK TO THAT FURTHER? LUCY, THAT'S GREAT.
SO WHAT WE CAN FOLLOW UP WITH LUCY, THANK YOU.
SHE SAID SHE'S HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY.
SO DEB, I HAVE ANOTHER, I HAVE A TOPIC.
UH, AND MS. PETE, I TALKED ABOUT THIS WOULD BE A PHONE, UH, BECAUSE OF AN INCIDENT THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED AT MY HOUSE.
OR WITH, WITH, WE MAKE A CALL TO GET A RESPONSE, IDENTIFY OURSELVES AS SENIOR CITIZENS.
HOW LONG IS IT GONNA TAKE THEM TO GET OUT TO RESPOND? IN MY CASE, IT TOOK THREE HOURS.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR, WHAT WAS THE INFRACTION TO YOU? I MEAN, TO REPORT.
OH, OH, I REPORTED, WE REPORTED IT THREE TIMES.
WE, WE HAD A STOLEN CAR THAT PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY, WHICH BLOCKED OUR, BLOCKED OUR DRIVEWAY.
BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART WAS THAT IT WAS A STOLEN CAR AND WE SAW THE, WE SAW THE, THE GUYS ON CAMERA JUST DRIVE UP AND GET OUT OF THE CAR AND, UH, STOLEN JEEP.
SOMEONE CAME, WE CALLED IT AGAIN, 9 1 1.
JIM, BELIEVE THAT I GET TO YOU JUST A MINUTE.
AND THEN THE THIRD TIME WE CALLED AND SOMEONE CALLED, FINALLY SHOWED UP ABOUT THREE, THREE HOURS LATER.
BUT IN THE MEANTIME, I CALLED, UH, KEVIN STEWART'S OFFICE TO GET SOME ASSISTANCE THERE.
AND, UH, WE, NOTHING, NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED.
IF I MIGHT INTERRUPT DAVID, I THINK THAT HAVING THE POLICE DO A PRESENTATION IS A GREAT IDEA.
BECAUSE THEY DEFINITELY HAVE CHANGED THEIR PRIORITIES OF HOW THEY'RE REPORTING TO DIFFERENT THINGS AND HOW THEY WANT SENIORS TO REPORT AND VERSUS THE REST OF THE WORLD OR WHATEVER, YOU KNOW, SO.
I THINK THAT'S AN EXCELLENT IDEA.
AND I THINK IT'S OVER, UM, CHARISE.
I THINK THAT'S AN EXCELLENT IDEA AS WELL.
WE, WE KNOW, WE KNOW EVERYBODY AND CALLING THEM MY WIFE IS A VIP.
I'M ONLY SAYING THAT BECAUSE IF I CALL MY PRECINCT, I GET IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FROM THE DIDN'T DIDN WORK.
DID YOU HAVE A TALK TO VI FOR FUTURE MEETINGS AS WELL? NO, I'M SORRY.
I SUPPORT DID YOU HAVE A TOPIC FOR FUTURE MEETINGS?
[01:30:01]
NO, NO.I, THAT WAS JUST A RESPONSE TO THAT.
UH, IF WE CAN GO TO DEBBIE, DO YOU HAVE, UH, A TOPIC FOR FUTURE MEETINGS? NO, I JUST WANTED TO TELL HIM THAT I CAN SEND HIM THE, UH, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR DAVID CLAYTON, WHO IS, UH, THE CITIZEN, HEAD OF THE CITIZEN, UH, ADVISORY BOARD TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
HE'S VERY HELPFUL AND, UH, HE'D BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO LOOK INTO YOUR SITUATION AND HELP YOU AS MUCH AS HE COULD.
UH, KAREN, WELL, I WAS THINKING, I KNOW I'VE THOUGHT OF SUBJECTS BEFORE AND NOW I CAN'T THINK OF ANY OF THEM, BUT I WAS, I THINK WE OUGHT TO LOOK AT WHAT COMES OUT OF THE LISTENING SESSIONS.
AND THEN THIS, THIS PRESENTATION TODAY JUST FASCINATED ME, ESPECIALLY THE WAY THEY'RE TRYING TO BUILD TOGETHER MM-HMM.
SO I DEFINITELY WANT UPDATES AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND, I MEAN, I WAS KIND OF OVERWHELMED.
THERE'S, SO, IT SOUNDS AMAZING.
SO I'D LIKE TO UNDERSTAND THAT BETTER SO WE CAN SHARE THAT MORE WITH OUR OKAY.
ROB, BEING SOMEWHAT NEW TO THE COMMISSION, UM, PROBABLY THE SECOND NEWEST MEMBER AFTER TERRA CITA.
UM, YEAH, I, I'VE LEARNED A TON IN THE SIX OR SEVEN SESSIONS THAT I'VE BEEN IN, JUST LISTENING TO ALL THE VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS THAT COME TO THE MEETINGS TO SPEAK.
I'VE BEEN TO SOME OF THE LISTENING SESSIONS AND AGAIN, LEARNED A LOT.
I THINK IF THERE'S ONE OR, OR, OR A COUPLE OF COMMON ELEMENTS THAT WE SEEM TO TALK ABOUT A LOT.
IT'S THE FACT THAT THERE'S ALL OF THESE SILOS DOING ALL OF THEIR GREAT EFFORTS, BUT THERE'S VERY LITTLE COORDINATION AMONG ALL OF THESE VARIOUS SILOS, BOTH FROM A FACILITATION OF WHO'S DOING WHAT, AND ALSO FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF HOW DO YOU COMMUNICATE ALL OF THESE TREMENDOUS INITIATIVES TO PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY NEED THEM.
AND THERE'S THIS, THIS, THAT'S THE SECOND ELEMENT IS THERE JUST SEEMS TO BE A GENERAL LACK OF AWARENESS ABOUT ALL THE VARIOUS SERVICES THAT EXIST FROM THE CITY, FROM THE COUNTY, FROM THE STATE, FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, FROM ALL THESE TREMENDOUS NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
AND SO WHAT I THOUGHT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN THIS SESSION IS MAYBE RATHER THAN HAVING, UM, YOU KNOW, SOME OUTSIDE GUEST SPEAKERS THAT, UH, CONVERSATION AMONG ALL OF US AS TO WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED AND WHAT ARE SOME IDEAS TOGETHER WITH THE, THE TEAM FROM THE CITY.
HOW CAN WE PROVIDE THAT PLATFORM OR HELP PROVIDE THAT PLATFORM OR ENCOURAGE THAT PLATFORM HAPPEN MORE QUICKLY? BECAUSE THAT'S WHY I WAS REALLY EXCITED, AGAIN BY THE PRESENTATION DAY.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO IS COLLECTIVELY CORRAL ALL THESE ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE ALL THESE TREMENDOUS SERVICES, BUT THAT EXIST IN SILOS AND PIECES AND PARTS AND BRING 'EM ALL TOGETHER.
AND SO HOW DO WE PLAY A ROLE IN, IN HELPING TO FACILITATE THAT TOO? COULD I RESPOND TO THAT? PLEASE? UM, PLEASE.
IN THE PAST, I'VE BEEN A SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
AND IN THE BEGINNING AND BEFORE I BECAME A COMMISSIONER, THE CITY OF DALLAS SPONSORED SOMETHING CALLED MAYFAIR IN THE MONTH OF MAY, WHICH IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH.
AND THEY BROUGHT TOGETHER, UH, NONPROFITS, UH, RESOURCES PROGRAMS, UH, BUSINESSES.
THEY BROUGHT THEM ALL INTO A, A COMMON AREA.
AND YOU ARE ABLE TO VISIT WITH THOSE PEOPLE, GET INFORMATION FROM THEM THAT YOU, THAT WOULD APPLY TO YOU AND THAT WOULD HELP YOU.
AND YOU COULD USE THAT IN WHAT I USE THAT INFORMATION.
I STILL, I STILL GO TO A LOT OF SENIOR EVENTS.
I'M GOING TO ONE THIS WEEK AT THE ARBORETUM, AND I GET INFORMATION.
THEY GIVE ME FLYERS AND BROCHURES.
I SHARE THEM WITH THE SENIORS IN MY COMMUNITY BECAUSE MY COUNCILMAN IS VERY PRO SENIOR.
I SHARE THEM IN EMAIL CHAINS TO THE SENIORS IN MY COMMUNITY.
BUT LIKE I SAID, IN THE PAST, THE CITY OF DALLAS ALLOWED US AS SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSIONERS TO DO THAT FOR THE SENIORS OF DALLAS.
AND THE SENIORS CAME IN FROM, UH, SENIOR CENTERS.
THEY CAME IN FROM, UH, THE DALLAS COUNTY, UH, MILL PROGRAMS. AND IT HAS BEEN ARGUED THAT YOU ARE NOT REACHING ALL THE SENIORS.
YOU'RE NOT GONNA REACH ALL THE SENIORS, BUT YOU CAN REACH A NUMBER OF SENIORS AND BY WORD OF MOUTH, THEY SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH EACH OTHER.
SO THE CITY OF DALLAS DROPPED THAT BALL.
I'VE HAD A MEETING WITH OUR, OUR DEPUTY CITY MANAGER ABOUT IT BECAUSE THIS COMMISSION DID NOT WANT TO EVEN DO AGE FRIENDLY DALLAS ANYMORE.
AND I HAD A MEETING WITH HER THAT WAS, UH, UH, I WAS INVITED BY MY MA TAKE, LET ME TAKE THAT BACK.
LET ME, I GET UPSET AND I GET, BUT ANYHOW, COUNCILMAN ATKINS ARRANGED FOR ME TO HAVE A MEETING WITH HER.
[01:35:01]
WERE NOT FULFILLING OUR.
