UM, WELL, WELL, EVERYBODY, WELCOME AND AS WE GET STARTED TODAY, UH, WE HAVE NO PUBLIC SPEAKERS, UH, BUT WE ARE GOING TO BEGIN WITH OUR COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT AND WE'RE GLAD TO WELCOME MARY PAT FROM THE DALLAS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM.

I WANTED TO SPEND JUST, I THINK, FIVE MINUTES TO KIND OF RUN THROUGH WHO WE ARE.
I'M NOT SURE IF YOU'VE ALL HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT, SO I'M GONNA GO THROUGH SOME SLIDES PRETTY QUICKLY.
UM, SO HERE'S A PICTURE OF OUR BUILDING THAT'S ON THE DARK RAIL SIDE.

BUT OUR MISSION IS TO TEACH THE HISTORY OF THE HOLOCAUST AND ADVANCE HUMAN RIGHTS THAT PREJUDICE, HATRED, AND INDIFFERENCE FORMED BACK IN 1984 AS A HOLOCAUST MUSEUM.
UM, BUT WHEN WE PLANNED THIS MUSEUM THAT WE OPENED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2019, VERY INTENTIONALLY ADDED HUMAN RIGHTS TO THE MISSION.
UM, AND OUR GOAL, EMMANUEL, CAN YOU ADVANCE, UM, IS TO TEACH AND INSPIRE AND PROMOTE UP.
UM, AND SO FOR US, UP STANDARD IS A WORD THAT IS MEANT TO BE INSPIRING.
IT IS, UM, SOMEONE WHO SEES SOMETHING WRONG, WORKS TO MAKE IT RIGHT, STANDS UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS, AND WORKS TO COMBAT INJUSTICE, INEQUALITY, OR UNFAIRNESS.
SO THAT, UM, WE HOPE THAT THE 60,000 STUDENTS THAT COME THROUGH OUR MUSEUM, 12TH GRADE, AND THE EQUAL NUMBER OF FAMILIES THAT COME THROUGH OUR MUSEUM ARE THINKING ABOUT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO STAND UP AGAINST PREJUDICE AND HATRED IN OUR COMMUNITY.
THE MAIN WAY WE TEACH IS THROUGH OUR PERMANENT EXHIBITION.
WE, THE PERMANENT EXHIBITION IS ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE MUSEUM, AND IT HAS THREE WINGS.
SO IT STARTS WITH THE HISTORY OF THE HOLOCAUST, AND I'M JUST SHOWING YOU A COUPLE OF PICTURES SO YOU CAN GET A SENSE OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO STUDENTS.
WE HAVE THIS, UH, WORLD WAR II ERA BOX CAR THAT YOU STUDENTS AND VISITORS CAN WALK THROUGH.
AND WE HAVE ARTIFACTS THAT BELONG TO LOCAL HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS.
SO ALL OF THESE THINGS, PLUS VIDEO RECORDINGS OF LOCAL SURVIVORS, HELPS PERSONALIZE THIS EXPERIENCE AND BRING IT TO LIFE.
THEN WE MOVE ON TO THE HUMAN RIGHTS WING.
THE HUMAN RIGHTS WING IN FOCUSES ON THREE EVENTS THAT HAPPEN IN RESPONSE TO THE HOLOCAUST.
SO THEY'RE RELATED, BUT THEY REALLY STARTED TO BE HELPING, BUT THEN MODERN HUMAN RIGHTS FRAMEWORK EMERGE.
SO THE FIRST EVENT WAS THROUGH THE NUREMBERG TRIALS.
IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THERE WAS REPRESENTATIONAL JUSTICE AND CONCEPTS LIKE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY AND WAR CRIMES AND CRIMES AGAINST THE PEACE.
UM, AND THEY PROVIDED EVIDENCE ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST, BUT ALSO SET, SET THE STAGE FOR HOW EVENTS LIKE THE HOLOCAUST WILL BE PROSECUTED GOING FORWARD.
THE NEXT EVENT IS THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, UM, ROOSEVELT CHAMPIONED, AND THEN THERE'S THE GENOCIDE GALLERY WHERE WE TEACH ABOUT THE PROCESS OF GENOCIDE.
UM, WE'RE NOT TRYING TO COVER EVERY GENOCIDE.
WE WANT PEOPLE TO JUST UNDERSTAND THE DEFINITION AND BE WARNING SIGNS, UM, BECAUSE WE'RE SEEING, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THESE SIGNS, UM, WELL ALWAYS WE'RE HUMANS.
SO WE ALWAYS SEE SOME OF THESE STAGES IN SO SOCIETY.
WE WANT PEOPLE TO BE ALERT AND TO STAND UP AND SPEAK ABOUT.
UM, AND THEN THE FINAL WING IS THE PIVOT TO AMERICA WING.

IT'S ABOUT AN INCREDIBLE PARTNERSHIP OF
IN BETWEEN 1912 AND 1932 THROUGH THEIR WORK, ALMOST 5,000 SCHOOLS WERE BUILT FOR BLACK CHILDREN ACROSS THE SOUTH AND SOUTHWEST.
AND SO BY 1932 AT THE YEAR THAT ROSENWALD DIED, THERE WERE 35% OF THE STUDENTS, BLACK STUDENTS IN THE SOUTH, THE SOUTHWEST, GOING TO THESE STUDENTS.
AND PEOPLE LIKE MY ANGEL AND JOHN LEWIS, UM, AND ME EVERS, YOU KNOW, MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN THE PEOPLE THEY WERE HAD THEY NOT BEEN ABLE TO GO TO THOSE SCHOOLS.
SO IT'S A REALLY GREAT STORY OF PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP.
THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES INVESTED AS WELL AS JULIUS ROSENWALD.
UM, AND WE THINK IT'S A VERY UPLIFTING, INSPIRING STORY FOR OUR TIME.
UM, WE ALSO HAVE PUBLIC PROGRAMS, UM, AND LET'S SEE, OUR NEXT EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS.
I DID WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT, UM, WE ARE SEEING ABOUT 60,000 STUDENTS A YEAR COME TO THE MUSEUM, BUT WE'RE WORKING WITH, UM, ALL WITH DISD WITH THREE OF THEIR FIVE REGIONS.
AND WE ARE EXPANDING NEXT YEAR TO REGION FOUR YEAR AFTER THAT TO THE FINAL REGION IN A PROGRAM WE CALL THE UPSTANDER PARTNERSHIP.
AND THAT IS A PROGRAM WHERE WE PROVIDE CONTENT FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE WITH LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES, UM, THAT ARE AGE APPROPRIATE AND ALIGNED TO THE TEACH.
SO WE'RE GIVING THE TEACHERS LESSONS THAT THEY CAN PLUG AND PLAY, AND THEN OVER FOUR DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS, THE STUDENTS ARE EITHER COMING TO THE MUSEUM FOR A FIELD TRIP OR WE ARE GOING TO THEM.
WE'VE, WE'VE HIRED EDUCATORS THAT CAN GO TO THEIR CLASSROOM AND TEACH.
AND SO IT STARTS WITH THE LITTLE ONES LEARNING ABOUT KINDNESS AND, UM, DIFFERENCE, VALUING DIFFERENCE.
SO THEN IT GETS MORE SOPHISTICATED IF THEY GET OLDER.
UM, BUT THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, CURRENTLY WE'RE REACHING A 50,000 STUDENTS AND NEXT YEAR WHEN WE ADD ANOTHER REGION TUBE, UM, OF DALLAS, AND I THINK WE'RE ADDING FORT WORTH, ISD, THAT WILL BE ABOUT 250,000 STUDENTS.
WE'VE GOT GREAT PUBLIC PROGRAMS, BUT I THINK I'M CLOSE ON MY TIME.

IF I'M JUST GONNA FOCUS ON THE MUSEUM, I'LL SAY, UM, I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT THE GROWTH IN THE SCHOOL PROGRAMS. UM, YOU KNOW, HAVING AND, AND THIS K THROUGH 12 PROGRAM WILL HAVE A FAR GREATER IMPACT THAN STUDENTS JUST COMING ON ONE FIELD TRIP.
YOU KNOW, THAT'S CONCEPT OF UPSTANDING BEHAVIOR,
UM, WE'VE BEEN WITH POP HEALTH FOR FOUR YEARS AND DISD AND
AND I THINK THE GOAL IS FOR THOSE KIDS TO GET THIS CONTENT MULTIPLE TIMES EVERY YEAR.
SO IT REALLY BECOMES PART OF THEIR DA.
SO I'M MOST EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
YOU KNOW, I WORRY ABOUT PUBLIC ATTENDANCE.
UM, IT, YOU KNOW, WE OPENED SIX MONTHS BEFORE COVID AND THEN HAD TO CLOSE.
AND SO WE DON'T REALLY HAVE A BASELINE FOR WHAT A FULL YEAR OF ATTENDANCE WOULD'VE BE, WOULD BE, BUT, UM, WE'RE ABOUT HALF WHAT WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.
UM, AND SO THAT MEANS INSTEAD OF EARNING 40% OF OUR BUDGET, WE'RE EARNING 20%.
SO IT'S JUST A HEAVY LIFT FOR FUNDRAISING EVERY YEAR.
UM, WELL, ONE THING YOU SHOULD KNOW IS THAT WE, BECAUSE OF THAT, WE'VE LAUNCHED AN ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN, UM, BECAUSE THAT'S, YOU KNOW, WE JUST HAVE TO BE A LITTLE BIT, WE HAVE TO HAVE A MORE STABLE BASE LONG TERM.
UM, AND THE GOAL IS 30 MILLION.
AND, UM, I'M HAPPY TO TELL YOU THAT COMMITMENTS 1.5, UM, THAT WILL COME IN OVER THREE TO TIME.
BUT THE GOAL IS TO GET FROM 7% OF OUR BUDGET BEING FUNDED FROM BY THE ENDOWMENT UP TO ABOUT 20%.

SO WE REALLOCATE THOSE FUNDS TO THOSE ARTISTS WHO NEED MORE.
UH, WE DON'T USUALLY TAKE ALL OF THE FUNDING FROM THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SPENT IT.
WE STILL LEAVE THEM ENOUGH SO THAT THEY CAN FINISH OUT THE YEAR, BUT WE KEEP LOOKING AT IT THROUGHOUT THE END OF THE YEAR SO THAT AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF ARTISTS WITH A LOT OF FUNDING WHERE WE COULD HAVE SPENT IT ELSEWHERE.
SO THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE, UH, MADE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLEAR.
UH, THE EVALUATION FORM WAS SOMETHING THAT SOME OF OUR ARTISTS WERE A LITTLE CONFUSED ABOUT.
SO WE MADE AN, UH, ANOTHER CLARIFYING POINT AS TO WHAT THAT IS FOR.
AND SO JUST IN CASE, SO YOU, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS, THE EVALUATION FORM, UH, CAP ARTISTS HAVE TO SUBMIT THAT EVERY TIME THEY DO A SERVICE, EVERY TIME THEY EITHER PERFORM SOMEWHERE OR DO A WORKSHOP, THEY HAVE TO SUBMIT AN EVALUATION FORM, WHICH IS, WOULD BE THE EQUIVALENT OF A FINAL REPORT.
