UM, I HAVE FORMER SERVED ON THE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD, SO I, I ROLLED OFF THAT BOARD SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR. THEY GAVE ME A COOL SIGN, HAS MY NAME ON IT, SO THAT'S PRETTY COOL. UM, I'M, UH, I'M, I'M FROM DALLAS. MY FAMILY HAS BEEN IN DALLAS SINCE BEFORE YOU COULD CALL DALLAS, DALLAS SINCE BEFORE IT WAS SAFE TO TRAVERSE THESE STREETS AS A, A FREE BLACK PERSON. UM, SO I REALLY, REALLY LOVE THIS CITY. AND A LOT OF MY FAMILY'S WORK HAS BEEN STEEPED IN SOUTH DALLAS SPECIFICALLY. UH, MY GRANDFATHER STARTED THE FIRST MLK PARADE IN DALLAS IN 1986. AND SO MY DAD, UH, REALLY HELPED GROW THAT PARADE. AND MANY OTHER PARADES FOR HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WON STATE THAT DIDN'T ALWAYS HAVE SOMEBODY WHO WOULD CELEBRATE THEM. UM, THAT'S, THAT'S KIND OF MY ETHOS. BUT THE CHAMBER HAS BEEN INVOLVED, UH, IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS. WE STARTED TO GIVE GRANTS DIRECTLY TO BUSINESSES. AND WE STARTED, UH, I THINK WE HAVE A, PROBABLY A BIGGER PORTFOLIO OF SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS. AND I LOVE THE KIDS. NOTHING AGAINST THE KIDS, BUT AS A BUSINESS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, I WANTED US TO HAVE A SIGNATURE THAT WE GIVE TO OUR COMMUNITY BECAUSE IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO GET A GRANT OR TO GET A LOAN IN OUR COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A BUSINESS AT A CERTAIN SIZE. SO WE CUT DOWN A LOT OF THE PAPERWORK. WE KEPT HIGH LEVELS OF VERIFICATION, BUT WE MOVED VERY QUICKLY TO GET $250,000 OF GRANT MONEY DIRECTLY TO BUSINESSES AND NONPROFITS. AND THESE WERE NOT JUST GIFTS BECAUSE WE'RE BENEVOLENT, BUT THESE WERE SELECTIONS OF BUSINESSES AND NONPROFITS THAT COULD TRULY SCALE. UM, I DON'T HAVE MY GLASSES ON TODAY, SO I CAN BARELY SEE. SO Y'ALL BEAR WITH ME. THE BABY HAS BEEN WREAKING HAVOC ON ME. SHE'S NEW. UM, BUT MY GLASSES COME FROM A BLACK OWNED COMPANY THAT WE'VE INVESTED OVER 15 GRAND IN. UM, AND GLITZ OPTICAL NOW HAS TWO, UM, BRICK AND MORTAR LOCATIONS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN SECTOR. MAYBE HER NEXT, YOU KNOW, LOCATION COULD BE SOMEWHERE IN SOUTH DALLAS. SHE ALSO HAS, UH, SUPPLEMENTAL VISION PLANS. BUT ALL OF THIS WAS POSSIBLE NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF OUR GRANTS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE TENACITY OF HER AS A BUSINESS OWNER, AND OUR WILLINGNESS AND OUR BOARD'S WILLINGNESS TO OPEN UP THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SMALL BUSINESSES TO PARTICIPATE WITH US AND NOT JUST GIVE STUDENTS GRANTS, BUT ACTUAL ENTREPRENEURS. SO SHE STARTED WITH ZERO BRICK AND MORTAR, AND NOW IN TWO YEARS SHE HAS TWO OF THEM. BUT THAT'S REALLY WHY I'M EXCITED TO SERVE ON THIS BOARD. UM, AND OUR FEATURE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PARTNER, UM, IS, WAS THE SOUTH DALLAS FAIR PARK, UH, INNOVATION CENTER. UM, THE EVENT WAS A PRETTY BIG SUCE SUCCESS IN MY VIEW. WE HAD ABOUT 38 PEOPLE, RSVP, AND WE HAD 36 PEOPLE SHOW UP, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A PRETTY GOOD RATE, UH, OF FOLKS ACTUALLY COMING THROUGH. AND I DO WANNA SAY THAT 36 IS A PRETTY CONSERVATIVE NUMBER. UH, A NUMBER OF PEOPLE BEGAN TO FILE IN ONCE WE STARTED. SO I THINK IT'S PROBABLY CLOSER TO LIKE 40, 41. UH, 20 OF THOSE FOLKS WERE IN PERSON, 16 OF THEM WERE ONLINE. UM, AND IF YOU CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, DELLA. AND THESE ARE SOME PICTURES FROM THE EVENT. UM, YOU KNOW, WE HAD A NUMBER OF PEOPLE SHOW UP, AND SO IT WAS A REALLY GREAT WAY TO KICK OFF A CONVERSATION ABOUT NOT ONLY WHAT THE SMALL BUSINESSES' NEEDS WERE, BUT ALSO TO TALK ABOUT HOW OUR FUND CAN ALIGN WITH THAT. AS YOU SEE, WE HAD A NUMBER OF FOLKS FROM STAFF COME TO HELP ANSWER QUESTIONS. UH, YOU KNOW, AFTER THESE EVENTS, THERE'S KIND OF LIKE A NETWORKING ASPECT TO IT. AND TYPICALLY WHAT HAPPENS IS FOLKS WHO HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS WILL FIND A STAFF PERSON AND TRY TO TEASE OUT KIND OF AN INITIAL CONVERSATION, AND THEN WE'LL MOVE THAT TO KIND OF LIKE EMAIL TO SET UP A FORMAL MEETING. AND AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE BOTTOM PHOTO, WE HAD A BIT OF A FULL HOUSE. UH, AND SO IT WAS KIND OF NICE IN A WAY THAT WE KIND OF RAN OUT OF SEATS. I THINK IT SHOWED THAT THERE WAS DEFINITELY INTEREST. UH, SO A LOT OF FOLKS FROM THE COMMUNITY SHOWED UP, UH, WITH THEIR IDEAS AND THEY KIND OF GOT ACCESS TO RESOURCES THAT THEY [00:10:01] NEEDED, WHICH WAS REALLY HELPFUL. UH, THERE WERE TWO FOLLOW-UPS. UH, THE INNOVATION CENTER HAD TWO FOLLOW-UPS AFTER THE EVENT. UH, ONE IS A PERSON WHO SHE'S EXPLORING SOME ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATION AND COACHING WITH. UM, AND THE SECOND ONE IS ACTUALLY, UH, IT'S KIND OF NICE BECAUSE I THINK IT SPEAKS TO THE WAY IN WHICH WE'RE BRINGING PARTS OF THE ECOSYSTEM TOGETHER. UH, THE SECOND PERSON THAT REACHED OUT TO DARSA AS A FOLLOW-UP, UH, SHE'D INITIALLY CAME TO US IN JANUARY TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT A PROJECT SHE WANTED TO DO AROUND HISTORIC PRESERVATION. THEY WEREN'T QUITE READY TO GO. SHE THEN ATTENDED THE MARCH 5TH INFO SESSION TO PROVIDE, TO GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT THAT PROCESS LOOKED LIKE. SHE WAS REALLY INTRIGUED BY THE, THE INFO SESSION. SHE CONNECTED WITH DARSA AT THE INFO SESSION, WHICH IS KIND OF WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN. THEY ARE NOW WORKING TOGETHER AND HAVING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HOW TO MOVE THAT PROJECT FORWARD. AND THAT PERSON ALSO SIGNED UP, UH, TO BE A PART OF BBC'S GROWTH SERIES, WHICH IS, YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW, THIS BOARD, UH, HELPED PROVIDE A GRANT TO SUPPORT BCLS PROGRAM TO HELP BUSINESSES IN SOUTH DALLAS GET READY. AND SO WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS SECOND FOLLOW UP THAT DARUSA HAS IS IT REALLY SPEAKS TO THE WAY IN WHICH THE DIFFERENT PIECES OF WHAT WE'RE DOING ARE ACTUALLY COMING TOGETHER TO HELP PEOPLE. UH, THESE INFO SESSIONS, YOU KNOW, AREN'T USUALLY THE MOST READY PROJECTS, BUT THEY'RE KIND OF THE FIRST POINT AND A LONG PROCESS TO GETTING THEIR PROJECT READY. AND SO WE'RE REALLY HAPPY THAT THE DIFFERENT PIECES, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PARTNERS ARE BANK PARTNERS, CDFIS, THEY'RE ALL KIND OF COMING TOGETHER AND THEY'RE FEELING MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE. YEAH, I FEEL LIKE THERE'S CERTAINLY, WE'RE GETTING, UH, WE'VE BEEN COMMUNICATING MORE CONSISTENTLY ABOUT WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS. SO WE'RE GETTING MORE FOLKS WHO ARE BETTER ALIGNED, WHETHER THEY'RE READY. IT REALLY, THERE'S KIND OF AN ARRAY OF FOLKS THAT SHOW UP. THERE ARE SOME FOLKS WHO ARE MUCH MORE READY THAN OTHERS. UH, AND THE KINDS OF BUSINESSES THAT PEOPLE ARE BRINGING FORWARD ARE REALLY PRETTY DIVERSE. YOU KNOW, UM, WE HAD, YOU KNOW, ONE PERSON WHO KINDA HAD AN IDEA, SHE WANTS TO CREATE LIKE A SALON, A HAIRCARE KIND OF SALON. WE HAD SOMEONE ELSE WANTS TO BUILD OUT A COFFEE SHOP. UH, THERE WAS ANOTHER PERSON WHO, UH, TALKED ABOUT OPENING LIKE A RESTAURANT. AND SO THERE REALLY, YOU KNOW, ONE PERSON WANTED TO START LIKE A, A LAUNDROMAT AND, AND WANTED KIND OF HAVING INITIAL DISCUSSIONS ABOUT LIKE, ALL RIGHT, IF I'M LOOKING FOR PROPERTY, IT'S GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT THIS SO I CAN START LOOKING AT PROPERTIES WITHIN THE SERVICE AREA. AND I FEEL LIKE THAT'S GONNA BE A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT TO PEOPLE WHEN THEY COME, IS THAT THE AREA AROUND FAIR PARK IS ALMOST COMPLETELY VOID OF ACTUAL BUSINESSES. UM, SO YEAH, WHY DIDN'T ECHO LOOK AT UTILIZING ANY OF THE VACANT, UH, COMMERCIAL SPACE AROUND FAIR PARK? YEAH, IF YOU, WE ACTUALLY HAVE, WE'VE LOOKED AT SOME OF THE VACANT SPACES THAT ARE, THAT ARE AROUND, UH, WHEN I SAY VACANT, UH, THAT THAT MEANS THEY'RE NON ACTIVE.
