AND I JUST GOT NEWS TODAY THAT THE FRIENDS GROUP OF THE LIBRARY IS GOING TO CONTRAST TO CONTRIBUTE BETWEEN 15 AND 22, I THINK THOUSAND DOLLARS TO, UM, AUGMENT THE BUDGET THAT IS SET ASIDE BY BOND.

AND SO, UM, ALSO WHAT HAS BEEN ON THE RIDE, ESPECIALLY SINCE COVID IS SUICIDE AMONG YOUNG BLACK MEN, UH, A LOT OF 'EM FEEL LIKE THEY DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO GO.
AND ONE, ONE OF THE THINGS I ALWAYS PUSH PEOPLE ON, LIKE ART INSPIRE HUMAN IS MY THING.

AND SO THAT'S THINGS THAT WE PUSH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING IN THE COMMUNITIES.
I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND A PROGRAM AT UCLA, UM, ARTS, UM, ARTS AND HEALING.
SO I HAVE A CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL EMOTIONAL ARTS.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, I WAS TALKING TO COMMISSIONER MEEKS RECENTLY ABOUT HOW DO WE CREATE A MUSEUM OF THE COMMUNITY AND NOT JUST IN IT.

I PUT THIS SLIDE UP IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE THIS IS THE GARDENS AT THE MILWAUKEE MUSEUM, WHICH ARE REALLY IMPORTANT, DESIGNED BY DAN KYLIE, WHO ACTUALLY HELPED WORK ON THE GARDENS AT THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART.
I KNEW DAN KYLIE HAD DONE SOME WORK WITH THE DALLAS COMMUNITY IN THE 1980S.
AND THIS IS THE, UH, MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.
AND I WANTED TO SHOW THIS FROM AN ARCHITECTURAL PERSPECTIVE.
THIS IS DILLER AND SC FROM 2016.
BUT WHAT'S SO IMPORTANT, IT CONTRASTS BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE, BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE THE ENTRY ON THE GROUND LEVEL, YOU KNOW, THIS IS PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT MORE WELCOME ARCHITECTURE.

YOU KNOW, MUSEUMS FOUNDED IN COLLECTIONS, BUT ULTIMATELY, IF YOU JUST KEEP CLICKING ALL THE WAY THROUGH, I BELIEVE THE 21ST CENTURY MUSEUM IS SUPPORTED BY THESE THREE PILLARS, WHICH ARE CRITICAL.
A LOT OF MUSEUMS ARE SUPPORTED, UH, OR AGAIN, FOUNDED ON COLLECTIONS.
BUT IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THAT, IT IS REALLY THE PEOPLE WHO DEFINE A MUSEUM, THEN I THINK YOU'RE AT A LOSS.
AND THE 21ST CENTURY MUSEUM NEEDS TO EMBRACE THIS IDEA AND ALSO PROGRAM AN EXHIBITION IS CRITICAL TO THE 21ST CENTURY MUSEUM.
SO AS MY TENURE UNFOLDS HERE IN THIS COMMUNITY, YOU'LL BE HEARING A LOT ABOUT THIS.
HOW ARE WE TREATING PEOPLE? HOW ARE WE WELCOMING THE COMMUNITY? HOW ARE WE BEING INCLUSIVE? BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE OBJECTS ARE IMPORTANT, BUT IT'S REALLY THE PEOPLE WHO DEFINE MUSEUMS AND THE PROGRAM.
SO THAT'S SORT OF WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT.
I ALSO WANTED TO MENTION, DMA IS THIS PLACE OF PEOPLE.
UM, WE HAD OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY AND I, I'M SORT OF AMAZED, BUT I THINK THIS IMAGE IS SPECIAL FOR ME BECAUSE I CAME HERE BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE.
AND I'VE BEEN MEETING THE FOLKS HERE AT THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART, AND IT'S REALLY REMARKABLE STORIES.

A LOT OF THE STAFF HERE AT THE MUSEUM, UM, THEY ENTERED AS YOUNG CHILDREN COMING TO THE DMA AND THEY ARE HONORED AND THRILLED TO BE PART OF THIS ORGANIZATION TO HELP GENERATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF ART ENTHUSIASTS AND BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.AND I THINK THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SHOW YOU THIS SLIDE.
WHAT'S ALSO I, CERTAINLY THE ART AND THE BUILDING AND THE INSTITUTION.
I CAME TO THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART IN 1990, NO, 2003 WHEN I CAME TO THE OPENING OF THE NATIONAL.
AND I SAW THIS IMAGE, THIS IDEA OF ART, NATURE, COMMUNITY SPACES, AND, UM, SCULPTURE ALL COMING TOGETHER.
SO, UM, THIS IS OUR SCULPTURE GARDEN, AND IT'S GONNA BE PART OF OUR FUTURE MISSION TO SORT OF MAKE IT MORE PART OF THE COMMUNITY.
WE DON'T THINK IT'S AS MUCH AS IT NEEDS TO BE.
SO WE'RE WORKING ON THAT NEXT SLIDE.
THERE'S ALSO REMARKABLE COLLECTIONS, AS YOU KNOW, THIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT PAINTINGS BY PAUL CISON, WHICH PRETTY MUCH REALLY DEFINED THE 20TH CENTURY IN ART.
AND THIS IS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE DMA AND YOU CAN'T DENY THE FACT THAT THE DMA HAS REMARKABLE WORKS FROM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
AND TO THAT POINT, AS YOU MOVE AROUND THE DMA, I WAS WALKING AROUND AND I KEPT LOOKING AT THIS PIECE.
THIS THIS IS A WORK BY THE ASMAT PEOPLES, UM, FROM THE AREA KNOWN AS NEW GUINEA.
AND THIS WORK IN PARTICULAR SPEAKS DEEPLY TO ME BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFERENT TYPE OF ART.
IT'S AN ART THAT PERHAPS NOT ALL WESTERN AUDIENCES UNDERSTAND, BUT THIS IS ABOUT, UM, A CULTURE AND A PEOPLE AND A TRIBE THAT IS THINKING ABOUT DEATH, THE AFTERLIFE, REVENGE, UM, ON PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED.
BUT IT'S A POWERFUL PIECE, AND MANY PEOPLE WALK BY THIS.
AND I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT TO MY STAFF WHEN I TALKED ABOUT THIS, UNDERSTAND THAT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SOME OF THESE WORKS.

YOU KNOW, I FEEL THAT AGAIN, OUR MUSEUM IS DEFINED BY THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS WHO WORK THERE.
I'M CERTAINLY LOOKING AT OUR PROJECT, OUR MAJOR INVESTMENT, AND I THINK SOME OF YOU KNOW THAT, UM, UH, OF THE VISION AND WE'RE, I'M SORT OF WRAPPING MY HEADS AROUND THAT EXHIBITIONS ARE REALLY IMPORTANT.
WE'RE WE'RE, UM, FOCUSED ON EXHIBITIONS AND THEN ALSO GETTING TO KNOW THE STAFF.
YOU KNOW, THE STAFF IS OVER 200 PEOPLE AND THEY HAVE BEEN, UM, HELPING MOVE THIS MUSEUM FORWARD IN, IN A REALLY IMPORTANT TIME.
THINK ABOUT COVID AMONG OTHERS.
I'VE BEEN SPENDING TIME TO GET TO KNOW THEM BECAUSE AGAIN, 60% OF OUR BUDGET IS OUR STAFF.
AND YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THAT IS WHO DEFINES A MUSEUM.
UM, I, I AM THRILLED AGAIN TO BE HERE.

AS AN OUTSIDER, I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT IT IS EXCEPTIONAL WHAT WE DO IN THIS CITY AND HOW YOU SPEARHEAD RESOURCES FOR CULTURAL CHILDREN, EDUCATION AND PARKS.
SO IT'S, UM, IT'S JUST AN HONOR TO BE HERE.
I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT 'CAUSE I GOT MY TEAM BEHIND ME.

AND, AND WE HEARD FROM AN ARTIST TODAY, KING IN PARTICULAR, WHOSE PRACTICE IS VERY MUCH BEYOND THE OBJECT, RIGHT? IT'S, IT'S ABOUT IDEAS, IT'S ABOUT PROGRAM, IT'S ABOUT, UM, HEALING.
IT'S ABOUT, UH, CREATING SPACES AND MOMENTS FOR PEOPLE TO ENGAGE AT ALL DIFFERENT LEVELS.
AND I, I, I THINK AS AN ARTIST, IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO EMBRACE THE IDEA THAT ART TAKES MANY DIFFERENT FORMS. AND, UM, I WOULD SAY, AGAIN, WORKING WITH COMMUNITY AND WORKING WITH DIFFERENT GENERATIONS, WE NEED TO EMBRACE THE FACT THAT ARTISTS ARE NOT REALLY SCULPTORS OR PAINTERS.
THEY'RE, THEY HAVE A PRACTICE.
THEY HAVE A PRACTICE WHICH BRIDGES MANY DIFFERENT AREAS.
IT CAN BE, UM, SOCIAL JUSTICE WORK, IT CAN BE POETRY, IT COULD BE SCULPTURE, IT CAN BE PAINTING.
AND I THINK EXPANDING THAT DEFINITION IS REALLY WHERE MUSEUMS NEED TO GO.
THAT'S WHY I PUT THE SLIDE UP THAT SAID PROGRAM AND EXHIBITIONS.
AND I BELIEVE THROUGH THAT WORK, COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS, THE, THE NEXT GENERATION WILL BE INVOLVED AND WILL BE ENGAGED.
THE WORST THING WE CAN DO IS, IS CONTINUE THIS IDEA THAT MUSEUMS ARE TEMPLES ON THE HILL, AND THAT ARTISTS ARE JUST SOLELY PAINTERS AND, UH, SCULPTORS.
AND I WOULD SAY, UM, EVEN CHEFS, MUSICIANS, THOSE ARE ALL ARTISTS.
AND WE AS AN INSTITUTION NEED TO SERVE AS A PLATFORM FOR THOSE ART PRACTICES.
AND THAT'S WHERE WE'RE GONNA BE TAKING THE DMA.
AND I DO THINK THAT'LL HELP ALLEVIATE THOSE BARRIERS AND CREATE ACCESS POINTS, WHICH IS WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, AND INCLUSIVITY FOR GENERATIONS TO REALIZE.
MAYBE THIS IS A PLACE FOR ME, COMMISSIONER BRAGGA SAID BY CALLING ON ME LAST.
